The journey continues. I will be taking a look at EVERY official Pokémon video game release in exact North American order. All 66+ games. Sixth is one I'm all too familiar with. It's not a challenge video this time, but we do still have to look at the Pokémon Trading Card Game.

TCG and TCG2 are games that I could go on and on about. Even playing it as a retrospective years later, the game is still so much fun.
It sucks that TCG2 was never given a proper localization for the overseas market. TCG and TCG2 are certainly the best spin-off Pokemon game in the Gen 1/2 era.
TCG2 should’ve definitely been an overseas release. Although maybe… MAYBE the kidnapping in the game was a reason not to 😅

I recently got into collecting the cards and battling. It's actually a really fun game. I grew up in the country so didn't have the luxury of getting them growing up .
It is very well made. Simplistic to learn, but still needs strategy to win
@@Paraspectre absolutely! My brother is a big magic fan and I actually had a hard time getting into it cause I found there so much to memorize, but after learning pokemon magic made a lot of sense.
I enjoyed the trip trough your childhood memories very much. Wouldn't mind being that long every time. Given there is enough to tell.

I got this for my Nintendo New 2DS since I can't find a physical copy. I love collecting the cards and customizing my decks but the only negative thing I can find on this game is that my opponents always use the same decks and strategies. I kinda wished they had alternating strategies to make the game more challenging.

Why thank you! Yeah it really was a great time to be a kid and a fan then. I remember going to a big card trading event at Burger King when the toys were there and it was just packed. Good times
I remeber getting my hand on a Japanesse rom of Pokemon Gold (before it realease in english), I still beat it by talking to every npc twice or more at different times and "noticing" a different patern in their response, using attacks was a trial and error thing, so yeah basic reading skill does make it a whole lot easier to enjoy the game, but not needed if you aree stubborn enough xD

Back when the cards were limited to the original 151, I only encountered base set booster packs in the wild, so I felt right at home when I played TCG 1. I thought the rocket and gym leader Pokemon sets were the coolest, but I only encountered them because the ice cream truck guy back in those days sold some cards individually. My parents would give me money from time-to-time when the ice cream truck went by and on at least one occasion I put off having ice cream so that I could get something like the Shining Magikarp card (technically that was a gen 2 set apparently, but that's one the card I paid for that sticks out most in my memory). Looking at the price Shining Magikarp cards are apparently going for nowadays, I think that might have been one of the most sound investments I ever made.

Never played the Pokemon TCG or the Gameboy version of the TCG. Your first Parasect only challenge somehow slipped into my recomendations and I could not have been happier to find your channel. Not sure if you have the photoshop skills to do this or not but it would be hilarious if your could slip Matthew's head into that photograph you show of you and your friends playing video games back in the day.

Man, the sequel to this is honestly one of my favorite games of all time. This one's so good too

I was born in the 2000s, so i don't know about the fad from back in the day. I firet started playing the game around the time the XY sets came out. I vaguely remember that time, but I do remember somethings.
I drew a Full Art Mega Rayquaza (the one with Emerald Break) but my parents took it and I haven't seen it since.
My cousin Winston and I learned to play the game using the videos online.
A "friend" gave me a box of cards since he wasn't a fan of Pokemon anymore. I still own that box.
Unfortunately, that's all I remember for the most part. I've effectively erased that time period for a variety of reasons.

Oh man, the TCG. The card game was actually my introduction to Pokemon as a kid. I went over to a friend's house one day, and he and his older brother were watching the anime while looking at and trading the cards with each other. I asked them what was going on, and they proceeded to explain everything to me. The older brother even gave me some of his cards for free. Granted, they were cards like Rattata and Caterpie, but I was still happy to get them, and that experience changed so much for me. I began getting the cards and watching the anime anytime I could, while playing some of the N64 games when I went to my cousin's house. Eventually, around the middle of gen 3, I figured I was getting too old for the series, and sold everything off on eBay with the help of my mom. I'm not gonna say what all my cards ended up going for, but let's just say I would've been happier with $50 for them all. After gen 6 came out, I decided to get back into the series, and with it my card collecting habits returned. As for the Game Boy game, I didn't play it until years later, sometime around 2018-19 I think. I was honestly surprised at how fun it was. It's not a masterpiece or anything, but it's fun to do a quick playthrough of from time to time. I even ended up finding a used copy of it for a good price recently, so now I actually own it.
I know that feeling of the enjoyment of even getting some standard commons. My Spearow story was memorable to me because I was excited to get one

I always found it really amusing how early TCG starter decks really furthered the belief that a good deck needed two types, at minimum, to help cover your weaknesses, or something like that (like adding Water Pokemon to a deck with a focus on a Grass attacker to snipe at potential Fire Pokemon). Then as the game goes on and we grow up and understand card game strategy better, we realize that it's actually better to focus your deck entirely on your one type, to ensure peak consistency rather than being stranded with a hand full of Water energy when all you have out are Grass Pokemon. I think starter decks still do that, but it's very clear which type is the focus and which one you're supposed to kind of slowly weed out of the deck once you get better cards.
I for sure agree with this. Using multiple energies and limited Pokémon can make for more difficult challenges too
One of the forgotten games of the time
A tutorial skip glitch exists and is easy for anyone to do. I can do it with phone touch controls. Technically it skips any duel, making it easy to farm packs.
It's executed by going to the overall check screen (the screen that shows the whole play area including deck size and discard pile), moving the cursor to the bottom card (either you active pokemon or your bench) and pressing 'Down' and 'A' on the same frame. If done correctly the duels ends as a victory or you get stuck in the party screen. You can redo the glitch from the party screen if you get stuck be pressing 'B' then 'A' in quick succession.

I remember bringing my game boy and this game to my grandma’s house for some holiday get together or something and my younger cousin kept bugging me to check it out. I didn’t want him to because he was too young to understand it and I just knew he would mess something up like delete my save or something. However, his mom asked me to let him see it. So I did. And when I got it back like literally 5 minutes later my save was deleted.

@@Paraspectre The thing that got me was that his mom kept insisting I let him play it because she thought I was just being mean by not letting him. It was expected but wasn’t my younger cousin’s fault, really. It was all hers lolol
any chance of getting a Pokemon Card GB2 specific* retrospective? love the series so far!
It won’t be part of the series since it was never in North America, BUT I did sort of review it start to finish in the first challenge I did for it! Check out my Paras/Parasect only video for it ☺️
I wonder, if the Play it pc game could be easily modified to for example add more cards to it. It also has cool sounding cries for all the pokemon in the game.

Of all of the Pokémon games I've ever purchased, the only one I still own Pokémon Stadium 2. Anybody who has any inkling of Pokémon can fucking rock it with you on that game in any respect.
Stadium 2 is awesome. I still have original Pokémon from 2000 in those boxes
my collection started like urs but in around 2014 i just bought packs no idea what to do but they looked nice and had pokemon on them then like 3 yrs ago i learnt how to play and made a custom set of rules which i use a lot

Where do you find a list of the pokemon available in each packs? Im struggling to find an Alakazam and id like to make a deck based on it.
Gamefaqs has some lists.
Alakazam is a Rare in the Mystery pack.

The moden TCG is gross to me. All the power creep, mega this, vstar that, turn one or turn two wins, it really turns me off on the game. I strictly am interested in a style I came across called Gym Leader Challenge where your deck is mono-type, you can only have 1 copy of each card except energy, and no rule box Pokemon or ace spec. It's cleaner, more strategic to me and you have more decisions you need to consider. I also printed off proxys of all the original cards through Gym Challenge (all Gen1 cards) and play with those. I'm super excited for Scarlet & Violet 151 set which takes all the 151 Pokes and gives them new art, stats, moves etc. so that will be fun.

I was a bit too old for Pokémon when it first appeared in the 90's, though my younger Cousin was heavily into collecting and trading the cards at the time.
I've never really been a fan of Pokémon Video Games, but i've dabbled into Pokémon Emerald on the GBA, though never got that far into the Game to be honest.
Lately i've been somewhat of a retro Game playing entheusiast, mostly through Emulation if i'm honest, but i find the history and impact that these Games had fascinating.
I'm currently working my way through some GB and GBC games that interest me, which brings me to this video on the Pokémon TCG which i'll try out to see if it captures my interest or not.
Either way, this was a cool video, well worth a watch even for a non Pokémon fan like myself.

At least you got 50 bucks for your collection. I straight up gifted almost all of my cards to a kid I didn't even know because I didn't care about them anymore.
I only kept my favourites.
I got my version of the game still - I remember always looking for someone to card pop with. As a completionist, later in life I bought another copy so I could do it with myself haha

Fun fact: the pokemon tcg speedrun starts after the tutorial duel and so the beginning timer is set to just over 8 minutes. Almost the exact same time as the end of your tutorial.

The Glitchless run does. Any% ACE "completes" the tutorial dual.

I didn't play back then because I thought I needed Colorless Energy cards for the attacks and believed the Starter Decks were worthless because they had none. MtG taught me I was wrong... 20 years later. (And thought the Prize Cards were an Ante system)
But I moved to Yugioh when that first dropped (I was a sucker for Ancient Egyptian stuff).
I still played the video games though (Yellow was my first) because I am a sucker for creature collecting (now I play Shin Megami Tensei, thanks to Pokemon).
Do you think the club members get job benefits or do they just not have jobs and only play a trading card game all day

Card pop....an interesting idea, but *awful* execution. You can card pop with another person/game *once* ever. You have to either find a third person/game, or the second person has to reset their save file if you want to card pop again. And there were 2 cards that were *only* available from card pop too...
Really sucks that none of the sequels got an english release
I had a fair amount of pokemon cards when I was younger and did battle some, but eventually lost interest or something and put them away. I didn't sell or throw them away though (thankfully), so they're still around in my closet. I played the GBC cartridge version tons as a kid and played the digital version on 3DS a lot as well when that came out. I still enjoy playing from time to time
I actually forgot to explain what Card Pop even was haha. I never did it so I didn’t even know it was a one time thing
@@Paraspectre something else to note about it is since it used the GBC infrared reader (or whatever it was called) for it, it doesn't actually function on the digital release. So it's entirely useless there, on top of being functionally useless even when it originally came out and was more popular. It's a shame because the phantom mew and phantom venusaur cards looked pretty cool and a post game deck builder machine had a deck that needed them
Really wish I had taken better care of my Charizard foil, it was a first edition and everything 😭 in the end still managed to get like $200 for it.

I have a binder for each type, sub-divided into basic/stage 1/stage 2 and a binder for trainer cards....also sub-divided into item/supporter/stadium/tool lol it took forever to get them so organized, but it's so much easier to make a deck that way

I played in the leagues at toys r us back in the late 90s an early 2000s legit still have my badges they gave out. Pokemon cards were life. Them an goosebumps books are the reason I love to read.
That’s amazing. There wasn’t a Toys R Us where I lived (hence the hour drive we made back then) so I didn’t even know badges were a thing there.
@@Paraspectre yeah hour drives a bit a way for a toys r us. Mine was In Omaha Nebraska. It was an entire league set up an loads of people playing in the afternoon. I'm talking hundreds of kids an adults. They would give you a booklet an then you'd have a judge stamp it for wins an losses an if you had a gym badge battle you had to play against one of the organizers an then their would be some stipulation you had to pass an then you had to beat them. It was dope. Like you had to use only fighting Pokemon vs this guy's deck an if you won he would give you a badge. An the badges looked exactly like the ones they were giving out in the game an anime. Kids would have them pinned to their jacket or on their hats. . If I find the stuff il send you a link. It was great.

@@Paraspectre I definitely feel blessed by being able to participate. Young me was very lucky to be able to have that in my life. An big thanks to my dad an aunt who would drive me an hook me up with some spare cash to by boosters haha. They went the extra mile for my goofy Pokemon obsessed ass.
I still kick myself, owned every US and JPN full card collections up to 2010, including all foils and event exclusives. Had to sell them dirty cheap because of an emergency. Should have just suffered through held on to them. Great dumb decisions that define us. 🤣
I actually just started Re-buying the base set, jungle and fossil ones from childhood. Like, just a few days ago haha
I love the game but the soundtrack is boring compared to the main Pokémon games
so THAT'S where those hideous 3d modes come from...
