Speaking of things you can get cheap at second hand shops: *scarves.* Thin silk scarves can make really luxurious gift wrappings, and if the recipient isn't the kind of person who wears scarves they can either re-use it as wrappings for another gift or hand it in to their nearest second hand store.
Love that idea, two gifts in one
that is a great idea!
what a terrific idea! and then it's useful after as a gift in itself or just to repurpose as another wrap!
Helena Nilsson thank you so much! I was just thinking about reusable wrappings yesterday and couldn't come up with something visually pleasing and earth friendly...I LOVE THIS IDEA! one more small change I can make to help 👍
thats a really smart idea
Ann is not only a baker, she represents the little known actual content creators who are being crushed by content farms who keep pumping out fake recipes.

The whole video sounds just ASMR to me.
No one died during the making of Anne's videos...... Dave may disagree, but he's still here!
One of the most memorable gifts I ever received was from a friend who had recently moved back to town right before Christmas and was very short on money. It was a delicate teacup from the charity shop filled with chocolates. This was more than 20 years ago but I still remember it, still have the cup.
That's adorable!
Aww that's so wholesome. I love that sh!t, aye
🥰🥰🥰
That's such a great idea! That's actually something I could afford to give as a gift, thanks for the idea :)

“The first one is chocolate because chocolate is yummy” yes this is the wisdom we all come to Ann for ❤️
Also Ann if you see this for some reason this was a great video

@@HowToCookThat You're awesome Ann! Love your videos ❤️
Chocolate 4 ever
Ann u are awesome
we love ann
I love how Ann realises a lot of us aren't made of money and suggests cheaper ways of doing things. A lot of cooking channels recommend such expensive products. Edit: plus it's nice seeing people complimenting the Aussie accent when we are forever being told, normally by the English, that it's the worst accent on Earth. Ann has the same accent I do as were both from Perth in Western Australia.
I know! Some cooking channels are like "here's how you make grilled cheese!" And then pulls out $30 of ingredients.
That is obviously a valid style of video but it is nice to see videos show the opposite.
I know I sometimes watch Babish, and he'll mention preferred ingredients that they definitely don't sell at the local grocery.
@@DrPluton haha, yeah. That's one reason I like Adam Ragusea, he seems to focus on dishes that normal people can afford and find the ingredients for.
@@DrPluton he's receipts are very expensive a complicated slot of times.
"You can buy this $40 ingredient online" (shipping not included) (you found it at an Aldi's for way cheaper)
ngl if someone gave me a big glass jar full of meringues i would literally never shut up about what a great gift it was
The best way to eat meringues like those is to sandwich them with some whipped cream. You will feel like you died and went to heaven after eating one. My other favorite way to eat meringues is the dessert Eton Mess. Smashed up meringue, whipped cream and strawberries (or whatever fruit you like) all mixed together. Both of those recipes are quintessentially British, and absolutely wonderful.🇬🇧❤
@@spanglelime you can even use it as a dessert sandwich, by toasting sweet cake bread, and smashing the meringue into a patty shape, and add the meringue in between the cake bread, along with ice cream or sweetened whipped cream
@@alternatecheems8145 soooooo that sounds good. I had Eton mess on Easter actually. Bloody delicious!
I made a gift like these for my grandma and she didn't care for it. She even threw away the fancy tin box I put it all in. She told me she got a bunch of stuff in it and didn't need the box. I guess she forgot I gave it to her lol.
Agreed. Gifts of meringue would immediately move someone up into the speed dial section of the phone and honored with "best friend" status.
I feel like Ann's voice would be great for a nature documentary, or for narrating a children's book. I mean both of those in a good way. In other words, I just find her voice soothing and calming

If you want to recycle and have fun with an easy craft -look in the recycle bin for plastic containers with *#6 in the recycle logo.* This is polystyrene and it can be turned into *ShrinkyDinks!!*
The most common plastic polystyrene items are disposable cups (Red solo cups in particular).
My cousin and I lived near a huge University and we actually had a pretty sweet lil business as kids (I guess we were “too cool” for lemonade stands ... except we definitely weren’t “cool” lol).
There were a few of the “campus party houses” that were so nice, they would collect, rinse and save most of the red solo cups for us to collect once a week. Then we used the cups (sanitized them of course) to make charms, keychains, beads, jewelry, school supplies (basically if it was a thing 2 ten year old girls in the 90’s liked, we made it.😆) and we sold them around school and at little local art fairs.
Sorry for the long comment, but I though maybe this info might help someone out with boredom or possibly even get them to start a little business of their own! ❤️
(Oh and obviously if you are messing with shrinkydinks, you will be using an oven/toaster oven... so if you are younger, please get an adult to help you out!)
Wow! That’s pretty neat! I have a whole bunch of shrink plastic, but I didn’t know you could just use #6 plastic. Thanks!
@@aruemon78 yay my long comment actually helped someone! 😁❤️
You are very welcome-Happy crafting!!
Cool! How do you do it? Cut it up and draw on it with markers and bake it? Does it release any fumes? I want to try it
I honestly find gifts like these so much more thoughtful and personal than just store bought gifts. But the problem is that people's busy lifestyles make it hard for them to devote time for gift making and they just gift whatever they find in they store. That's why recently I've started gifting people plants seeds/ saplings, handwritten letters with chocolate cookies, glass jars filled with fresh flowers and fruits! It doesn't take much time but is so much more sustainable!
A large part of the problem is worrying that people will think you've "cheaped out" on them. But cheap homemade gifts are perfect for people you are obligated to give gifts to, but otherwise wouldn't - like coworkers or distant family members. Especially when you come up with one that SEEMS like it's worth a lot more time and effort and supply cost than it took.
@@adde9506 yes exactly! Gifting your friends or coworkers has become so much more a competition than an act of appreciation!
Weird that one of the most pleasant sounds ever is an australian accent saying "tempered chocolate."
I think she's actually from New Zealand if I'm not mistaken??
But she's living in Australia.
Trust me, I don't say tempered chocolate like that at all, and I'm Aussie, haha.
@@BakaTaco pretty sure she said she was in australia. Probably a regional dialect thing. Like how southerners where I live would sound very different saying "tempered chocolate" than the yanks up north.
@@squirleyspitmonkey3926 You could be right, I'm not 100 percent sure, but I can say she has a Kiwi accent, from what I can hear. it's not that strong, but it's there.
I could be wrong though, and I'm happy to be corrected.
@@BakaTaco I'll be honest, being from the American South, New Zealand and Australia sound near identical to me, like how anybody not from the US would hear all of our accents as identical, but someone from here would be able to distinguish where the person is from.
She could very well be a Kiwi transplant living in australia. May tweet her and ask because now I'm curious.
@@squirleyspitmonkey3926 Hey now, not everyone in the US sounds the same haha. Just like us Aussies over here in upside-down land.
Prime example is that I wish my Aussie accent was thicker like it tends to be further up north.
I just did a Google search and I can't find anything about her being Kiwi at all. I might have been wrong after all!
She now lives in Sydney (New South Wales) but was originally from Western Australia.
Could POSSIBLY have Kiwi in her yet, but I'm now not nearly as confident!

Not only can you make food with the trays, you can also use it for art supplies, example; water color water dish, organizer for little decals, paper clip binder clip holder, etc. the possibilities are endless
Yes!!! I do the same thing! It keeps everything organized and it's cheap
@@happyfrenchtoast420 especially when you’re an broke artist because supplies are expensive
Just a note:
Many food container plastics are known endocrine disruptors and have a tendency to leach into liquids. This is not normally much of an issue if such plastics are used to hold dry solid food. However, using such plastics to hold, store, or set, warm or even room temperature liquid foods may be not be advisable. Always do your own research and familiarize yourself with how to identify which plastics are which.
Safe sustainability everybody!
Came here to make the same point! I love the idea of reusing the plastic trays to make chocolate bars, but there's a reason chocolate is made in special food-grade moulds!
@@enricajossi8096 precisely :)
Yeah, I cringed when I saw that part. Those plastics are most likely not meant to heat things in, and will likely melt or just put things we don't want into the food. I typically love her videos so I'm hoping that was just an oversight.
@@elishevaadlerzirkind9070 agreed, point for point. Kind of ironic that she, _of all people,_ is offering a potentially bad cooking lifehack lol oh well, happens to the best of us.
Those trays are probably polystyrene, which definitely falls into that category of plastics. However, one person getting one large candy bar probably isn’t going to suffer health problems. It’s the cumulative effect of all the plastics with such compounds, which are everywhere, that cause problems.

Dear Ann,
I think you should consider doing a full series where you give us a course on basic food science.
Thank you.
If you think about it, Ann makes some of the same types of videos that the content farm channels do: cooking videos/hacks, recycling videos and how-to videos. The difference? She has REAL and ORIGINAL content that MAKES SENSE and she actually explains the science behind it. She doesn’t re-use content and works really hard to give us new content.

Ann is a UA-cam gem. I'm so glad I found her.
The whole "reduce reuse recycle" thing is honestly a bit of a scam by big businesses to shift blame. Household waste pales in comparison to the waste produced by businesses, and much of that household waste is only produced because manufacturers and supermarkets insist on using large amounts of unnecessary disposable plastic packaging (and the packaging within a product is still small compared to the packaging required to ship it). Like its not the end customer's fault when Woolworths wraps a bunch of bananas in plastic, for example. The onus is on them to stop doing that in the first place, or more realistically, on the government to *force* them to stop because they're not going to stop of their own volition. Large companies produce most of the waste, not individuals. We can and should still reduce our own waste on an individual basis, but we need to stop being fooled into thinking that will solve the problem in its entirety.
EXACTLY!
Strongly agreed.
Someone said it!!!!!👏👏👏👏
Absolutely agree but as normal consumer I want to feel responsible and that I am doing my part. Even tho it's kinda insignificant I want to be eco minded. Not supporting fast fashion, be vegan, recycling and reusing is kinda demonstrative in a way. I know it can be annoying to talk about it but I think it can change a lot of people's mind. Then it makes more people to push onto these big companies. It's all connected and a big cycle. So we shouldn't beat ourselves down but also don't give up on eco lifestyle completely
Thank you! Honestly we all have a part, but manufacturers create things absolutely made to fall apart and so how can we even repair them? I have a car that's 27 years old and still chugging on, utensils and gadgets that are 20+ years old and repairable. But stuff I buy now doesn't seem to last! And pointlessly plastic! I wouldn't mind paying more for something metal sometimes, especially talking kitchen stuff!

Can you do dairy free recipes? My sister became lactose intolerant about 2 years ago and it’s really sucked because now she can’t eat the things she used to love, and it’s harder to bake for her. You’re really creative, so I wanted to see if you had any ideas!
When I bake or cook for my nieces who are allergic to milk protein I use the same old recipes, just substitute any dairy with a plant based equivalent (ie. butter with margarine, milk with soy milk or oat milk). And if she's "just" lactose intolerant (it's a hassle I know, not disrespecting) depending on where you live there should be a plethora of lactose free products to use. (I live in Sweden where all grocery stores have a fridge just for lactose free milk, cream, yogurt, butter etc.)
@Sevriyenna Thank you for responding! We do use substitutes like lactaid and such, but it has been harder to find replacements for butter and buttermilk especially with covid causing empty shelves. But, I will try more recipes with your suggestions. And she isn't voluntarily intolerant, she has an allergy to lactose(everytime she ingests lactose she has horrible stomach pains for a long while) but we just call it lactose intolerance rather than an allergy. Again, thank you!
You can try coconut milk
@@indecizive.v3A no problem! So what she actually has is lactose intolerance, the symptoms you describe is what happens when an lactose intolerant person ingest lactose. I've got a couple of friends who are legit lactose intolerant and they have such a hard time in restaurants and such because of all of those f*ckers who just say they are intolerant, but really aren't. Those who say they are lactose intolerant when in fact they just don't want to eat dairy are the real problem. 🤬🤬🤬 (Sorry, my SO's family is just riddled with allergies, so one of my pet peeves are people who say they are allergic when they really aren't. It lowers the tolerance in the general population towards those who actually gets sick if they eat/drink/touch xyz.)
But anyway, in my personal taste oat based dairy substitutes are the best for baking. The others (almond milk, soymilk etc) have a quite distinctive flavour and that can sometimes push through and change the taste of what you are trying to achieve tastewise. And as long as you can get rolled oats you can always make your own oat milk by just mixing it up with water and a pinch of salt. (Lots of recipes on the interwebs)
Good luck! ❤
@@Sevriyenna yes I completely feel you its annoying to me too when people refuse to have any form of lactose just because they dont like it or think they're intolerant when they arent(same thing for people who actually cant ingest gluten vs people who just dont deal with it even if they dont like it), especially since I've seen how much unnecessary pain my sister has to go through just because she had some of her favorite ice cream (she used to love pumpkin ice cream but we havent found a lactose free alternate to that). I dont like hard boiled eggs very much, but it's not the end of the world if I have one i just deal with it. Thank you for your time!
Aesthetically I’d prefer the fruit and nut one, but to eat I’d prefer the M&M one 😋

This is something that I learnt about you and its really amazing.
I live in Pakistan, and in our area there are many places which are filled with garbage and other things that can be recycled!
But our people always blame this on government saying that they do not hire sweepers to clean the area. And I get annoyed by these type of people because a person should know that the area covered by him should also be cleaned by him but sadly we never take these type of things upon ourselves.
I made a mind set that if every individual realises and start cleaning their own areas and not to throw garbage and wrappers on street thinking if I throw it in a trashcan what difference is it gonna make!?
But it does make a difference. You tried to change something and some people might follow your actions!

A huge huge huge round of applause for her 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Not only did she give us DIY tips she also gave use a cooking tutorial.
“What if you have no clue about baking and you are looking at my marshmallow and honey comb and saying that’s to hard for me”
It’s like she can read my mind
As a cook with a lot of interest for pastry, your videos are great !
I love that you take time to explain and debunk things .
Thanks for your amazing work !
You know time flies, when it feels like Ann uploads every 6 hours
Definitely been 2 weeks 😀
I was feeling like she was uploading every hour for some reason
@@HowToCookThat sure it has! love your videos! ❤❤
The mushroom tray bar reminds me of Tony's Chocolonely bars, where there are no two pieces the same size to represent the inequalities in the Chocolate business (They are a fairtrade Company who fight for that). I think it is a Dutch Company, I dont know of they are available everywhere?
I gave their chocolate bars to my family for Christmas. The chocolate is really good!
While I know of their mission, I had no idea that's why those bars were shaped that way. I just figured it was an aesthetic choice.
Ann: 'Reuse plastic containers to reduce plastic waste'
Also Ann: proceeds to cover everything in plastic sheets.
I'm sorry, i didn't see which trash has been turned into anything edible as the title says...?
I just noticed that :(
@@AbelleveMe its more of like reusing things that are supposed to go to waste like for example a plastic cookie tray has been used to mold a chocolate or an empty jar which been used to store sweets
@@avalanche7810 yes, and therefore it seems like the title could be changed to maybe "(re)using trash to make edible gifts" bc the trash itself isn't turned into anything edible at all
It'll still gonna be a waste in the end...it's not reducing the waste it's delaying it
Some of these tricks are so simple, yet so presentable as gifts! Thanks Ann
I love this video miss reardon!! I work for a greenhouse and sometimes we throw away things that catch my eye that can be used for a project, like those plug trays to start seeds in and netting from bulb bags that I took to sprout beans and seeds on. Resourcefulness is something I've been trying to get better at and I love the ideas you are showing to inspire others. My favorite is also that cool design you made with the mushroom plastic package.
It sort of feels like a fun treasure hunt when you have your eye out for secondhand items or trash that could be given a second life. it feels so good when you go "aha!" when you envision a new way you can use something that most people throw out. Thats why I love going to the thrift store and just looking through the knick-knacks people used to have. So interesting seeing that variety. Anyways love you and hope you're doing well xoxo
Brilliant idea Ann. Who wouldn't love something home made.🥰😊
I saw the title and immediately thought, oh no what’s Dave going to be fed today?!
😆
Hi Ann, I love your work but I am a bit nervous about using plastic packaging as food moulds, since they aren't intended for that. Chemicals in plastic are very complex and I'm concerned about the heat leaching some of them out. I know you specify tempered chocolate but the less heat applied to the plastic the better, if it is to be used. Could you maybe throw in a big idiot-proof note at the start about temperatures or even plastic types in the future? Some people really are lacking in attention spans and will absolutely melt and/or eat their packaging. Love the reuse idea though. :)
Really excited about the book by the way! Congratulations!
another idea for the glass jars: search for some rocks, sticks, moss and other plants to make a mini terrarium! there are a lot of tutorials on youtube on how to make them, and they require minimal maintenance, so they're a great gift:)
I love these ideas! it’s so awesome to show people how simple things can be reused! i’m currently trying to reduce my waste and have been reusing so much stuff that i already had! my favorite is making bar soap into liquid soap and reusing my plastic hand soap bottles i already had instead of buying new ones! saves so much money and kept the plastic ones from sitting in a landfill!
Her handwriting is SO satisfying
I love these (as always), though I can't help but think that it's better to just not buy cookies etc in plastic containers. Plus wrapping the finished gifts in foil and plastic is, well... I like the jar from the secondhand store idea, though! Also, reusing plastic trays might not be the healthiest choice. If you want to reuse plastic packaging, please look for markings such as HDPE, LDPE, PP, "food safe", the wine glass and fork symbol, etc. The kind of plastic you should avoid the most is probably PS - polystyrene.
Just a tip: When showing a second image/video (like the one you showed for the crystallized sugar for the honeycomb), place them on the top left/right. In case anyone is using captions, the video/image is blocked by text.
And my family questions why I save everything down to the plastic Mayo jars. I ain't made of money! I ALWAYS find some sort of use out of obscure stuff you would regularly think of throwing away. I even save the TP rolls, they make great craft items for kids, or I use the biodegradable ones for planting seeds indoors before spring comes
Thank you so much Ann for producing content such as this video. It's so important to show people how to recycle instead of just buying and adding to the problem. You're an inspiration! x
These are great ideas and very practical 💜
thanks Kamakshi
Wait is it only me or I am seeing that you have commented 15 HOURS ago is UA-cam drunk?
@@Zikadiddat I can see that too
@@Zikadiddat patreons get early access
@@Zikadiddat no it's not. I think the person who commented this is a patron of Ann's channel and patrons have 24 hours earlier access.
I love these! Seeing how badly the waste humans produce affects the environment, it really breaks me. Been trying to do as many environment friendly things as possible, though in my situation I can't do much. These really are great ideas though, thank you!
Ann: if you wanna save money give people gifts that take a lot of space and has lots of air in it.
All the people she's ever given marshmallows or marangues to: 👀👀
I have been watching Ann bake for a long time and I just love watching her videos. Thank you
I love going through second hand stores, especially the glass section, you never know what you can find.
Thank you so much for your videos Ann
let’s just hope you don’t give someone something from the second hand/ thrift store that was once theirs.
Would be funny though
I've gotten something like that before. Lmao
