I would submit that the effect of a cloak of displacement can be dispelled, because while a displacer beast's displacement is not magical, necromantic magic is required for the dead beast's hide to keep the effect functioning. This is why the cloak is considered a magic item.
I'm glad you showed and explained the part about Displacer Beast as mounts. I always ranked them among the harder beasts to ride, or create a saddle for along with Phase Spiders. I feel like you have to have a magical saddle for these types of "mounts" because of their shifty nature and abilities.
Finally, a cat that my wife doesn't want! I love these things, I like to have a variant of these cats that turn invisible every other round. When in groups THEY ARE DEADLY!

I had a multi stage Encounter planned where my Players would be preyed upon by a Displacer Beast (they are just three Level 2 beginners so it seemed like just about the right Level of Challenging ) One of my Players imidietly attempted to feed it a Dead Crow (which he had for some reason still in his pockets from the past day) Together with a Cast of Animal Friendship which worked because i homebrewed the Beasts Int Stat before the Game...(serves me right) With ridiculous Animal handling Checks, my Player is on the best way to turn "Cleo" into his Familiar for the Pact of the Chain at Level 3. Thanks for the Lore :D i will use it while i am trying to balance this...
Personally id house rule something similar the exception being you have to keep a displacer beast from when its still a baby. Otherwise your food. Beyond that i think you should let them have fun with "cleo" lmao

She leaves these bodies by her water dish. I take em and throw em in the bathroom bin or flush the bugs. I think she assumes I consume them in there.
I thought I had read somewhere that housecats bring the dead bodies back as a genuine gift to their owners. Something about how they think you're a crappy hunter. Could be wrong. But yea, housecats do hunt for sport. I think it's because they still have the hunter instinct and don't need to consume what they hunt.
I used to group the displacer beast, the aurumvorax and basilisk (any creatures with 8 limbs) as coming from the same world or plane where evolution favored 8 limbs over 4. By the way. I listened to the entire monster ecology playlist (while at work) and it took almost 3 weeks. Time well spent.

The displacer beast reminds me of the moorcats of Shannara series by Terry Brooks. Walker Bow character had a moorcat companion. They have a tendency to shift through shadows, large as cheetahs, and a form of limited empathy to communicate. They are smarter than animals also. Great video. The thought of using a beast's coat to make a cloak is disappointing.
Wow AJ, now I see why you displaced your presentation of this beast from Rhexx's! One thing I'd conjecture: If the displacer's ability is innate, maybe the cloak of displacement is based on some necromantic way of keeping the pelt alive?
I read somewhere the cloak was a way to replicate the abilities of a Displacer Beasts innate abilities. Also, one source (sorry, can't remember where I read e either of these) says to make a cloak of displacement you need the hide of a Displacer Beast.
I always think of both my first time playing table top because the dungeon was full of goblins and bugbears with the occasional displacer beast and i also think of baldurs gate for the playstation because theres some cool displacer beast encounters in that game( 1 ot 2 i can't remember lol)
When I use these creatures in wooded areas, they are to be feared as a group. I fully use not only their natural capabilities but also their far-above-animal intelligence. I have them as omega-skilled climbers because they figure out how to use their tentacles as climbing boosters. Also, at least one speaks and understands the common tongue... so I pay attention when the party is making plans within earshot of these beasts. They don't understand everything but they do get the gist of what the party is planning. I also have them seemingly flee "for good", to come and attack as a 2nd wave after the party survives and is hurt by a different combat situation. "But your way makes them too smart." No. It does not. Imagine beasts with the brilliance of adult special education high school graduates. Don't look at me like that, they are a lot brighter than you think they are... and they are about the Displacer Beast IQ to Int conversion. Now, imagine these beasts having that level intellect their whole life as cunning, hunting, pack monsters. They won't be planning seige combat or weapon use but they will be an effective ambushing combat unit. I guess I had the advantage to have gamed with some "special" gamers in my time. To me, average people are just a little faster and a little brighter than them. And the "special" gamers, being self-aware, are far less cronically stupid because of ego and assumptions. Off on a tangent, want a giggle? New player: "You are playing a Cleric? How can you..." Me (interrupting): "You are playing a Conjurer with a 19 INT. Are you personally over two standard deviations above average intelligence, far into genius range, with exceptional adventuring talent? No. He's liked and he plays his character well. I'm the ^sshole here... and I am really good at roasting judgemental people." Everyone BUT Cleric player and new player: **laughter** Cleric Player (to me, not the new player): That was mean. **silence** Me: Sorry. I was just... What wordplay? Blink Dog or Displacer Beast isn't really a play on words. I think I know what you mean but we have Pond Skaters and Roadrunners for example, so it's not that much of a "strange sphere of wonderland" is it.

it'd be amazing if the Cloak of Displacement & the Blink spell caused interference on each other! I know double disadvantage doesn't exist in 5E, but I'd surely give it to an adult Displacer Beast if ut was in a situation that already gave Adventurers disadvantage, as fighting in the dark.
Just have the displacement ability end until the blink spell ends. The wearer of the cloak probably wouldn't feel the same discomfort as an actual displacer beast, because the cloak is just a worn item, not the wearer's own skin.
@@IalporVpaahi or the plater rolls a d2 (or a coin) if 1, the spell isn't casted, but the slot is used; if 2 the displacement ends 1 turn after the spell.

Hey AJ, while I'm watching the video, here's an idea that might be fun for a special Halloween video: I'd love to see your take on the Deadites from the Evil Dead franchise for D&D! Some ideas off the top of my head: superficially similar to zombies, but possessed by a demonic spirit. Dexterity is on the high end of the human scale, Strength is comparable to a strong human being (somewhere in the 13-15 range). Deadites can use a momentary super-strength attack that sends full-grown men flying 10-30'. Spiderclimb at will, sometimes have acrobatic abilities that border on comical, can occasionally use illusion and charming magic to fool people into thinking they're still alive. Some can use a short range teleport to escape losing battles, but only when no one is looking. Will frequently pause in combat to mock, laugh at, and berate their foes. Also known to use Animate Plant magic to entangle and assault victims in forests, as well as Telekinesis magic to slam and lock doors. Anyone killed by a Deadite can potentially become a Deadite. Deadites are foreshadowed by a rush of nameless fear that races head-first over the forests, swamps, and desolate places they inhabit. This fear is never exactly seen, but forces anyone in its path to make a saving throw or flee in panic. Deadites are absolutely Chaotic Evil and probably hail from a layer of the Abyss, and the rituals for summoning them are, of course, found in the Necronomicon and other evil tomes of similar ilk. Thought of it because I'm binge-watching Ash vs. Evil Dead on Netflix, noticed its made in New Zealand, and thought of you. Enjoy!

It depends on how the hide you carved from a dead creature is retaining the powers of the creature. Now if the corpse of a displacer beast still displaced... that would be different
The effect and the hide themselves may not be, but there may be magic used in it's curing to preserve the effect? Maybe the cloak would still work but will start to rapidly fall appart? Maybe it could be fixed if the right spells were re-cast on it?
A highly dangerous ambush predator which would be extremely dangerous in a natural environment. The mind of the author married a squid with a jaguar... surprised if one would not marry their hunting strategies... Hell, I'd be tempted to give their skin a suite of chromatophores so they could be actually invisible until striking distance
Why am I getting "the Ghost and the Darkness" vibes from this video. Watch the film or just read it and you will see why I say this. Ok for a one shot or a short campaign. 2 displacers working together. Eather because of cubs/kittens ..... offspring??? And/or gateway to the feywild. And the local village is expanding into their hunting lands. Some villagers have came up missing. Some remains have been found. Not eaten just killed/murdered. Reports have been made day and at night people hearing a womans screaming deep in the woods. When they go looking theirs no trace of a woman. If theyake it back at all. Heroes wanted. Thought about giving the wee beasties not exactly speak common but a way to lure people out into the open for ambush hits. One of the biggest things I’ve noticed from these videos is how incorrectly, or incomplete, these monsters are designed in 5e. Yet another bad issue with that edition compared to pre-4e. Trust me folks, just play 1e-3.5e and forget the rest LOL
I get where you're coming from but if you're the DM you can make it whatever you want. I like to stick to the 3.5 dragonborn lore because it's cooler. So in my game it is so.

AJ had a displacer beast video planned at least a week before MrRhexx put out his, and AJ even mentioned that he would hold off for a couple weeks on doing his own out of courtesy for MrRhexx. Their videos may often touch on the same topics in D&D lore, but they almost always use at least slightly different information, and the ways they each present their information is very different. I think it's bad form to make petty accusations without doing your due diligence, but what do I know?

What wordplay? Blink Dog or Displacer Beast isn't really a play on words. I think I know what you mean but we have Pond Skaters and Roadrunners for example, so it's not that much of a "strange sphere of wonderland" is it.

I know double disadvantage doesn't exist in 5E, but I'd surely give it to an adult Displacer Beast if ut was in a situation that already gave Adventurers disadvantage, as fighting in the dark.
Just have the displacement ability end until the blink spell ends. The wearer of the cloak probably wouldn't feel the same discomfort as an actual displacer beast, because the cloak is just a worn item, not the wearer's own skin.
@@IalporVpaahi or the plater rolls a d2 (or a coin) if 1, the spell isn't casted, but the slot is used; if 2 the displacement ends 1 turn after the spell.
Some people say that some simics hybrids have Displacer tales as appendages.
I didn't know they have fur. I always thought they were smooth skinned like a cephalopod.

Hey AJ, while I'm watching the video, here's an idea that might be fun for a special Halloween video: I'd love to see your take on the Deadites from the Evil Dead franchise for D&D!
Some ideas off the top of my head: superficially similar to zombies, but possessed by a demonic spirit. Dexterity is on the high end of the human scale, Strength is comparable to a strong human being (somewhere in the 13-15 range). Deadites can use a momentary super-strength attack that sends full-grown men flying 10-30'. Spiderclimb at will, sometimes have acrobatic abilities that border on comical, can occasionally use illusion and charming magic to fool people into thinking they're still alive. Some can use a short range teleport to escape losing battles, but only when no one is looking. Will frequently pause in combat to mock, laugh at, and berate their foes. Also known to use Animate Plant magic to entangle and assault victims in forests, as well as Telekinesis magic to slam and lock doors. Anyone killed by a Deadite can potentially become a Deadite.
Deadites are foreshadowed by a rush of nameless fear that races head-first over the forests, swamps, and desolate places they inhabit. This fear is never exactly seen, but forces anyone in its path to make a saving throw or flee in panic. Deadites are absolutely Chaotic Evil and probably hail from a layer of the Abyss, and the rituals for summoning them are, of course, found in the Necronomicon and other evil tomes of similar ilk.

I would think displacer beasts would hate giant spiders seeing them as competition for prey. But I do agree they can both be found in the same area
Only when the Giant Spiders are in cahoots with the Ettercaps and therefore, don't treat the Displacer Beasts as prey.

I feel that the displacer hide should not be affected by dispell magic (or be considered a magic item) as the displacer's ability isn't magic
it shouldn't dispel magic does not cancel supernatural and extraordireny effects unless spefied otherwise
It depends on how the hide you carved from a dead creature is retaining the powers of the creature. Now if the corpse of a displacer beast still displaced... that would be different
The effect and the hide themselves may not be, but there may be magic used in it's curing to preserve the effect? Maybe the cloak would still work but will start to rapidly fall appart? Maybe it could be fixed if the right spells were re-cast on it?

A highly dangerous ambush predator which would be extremely dangerous in a natural environment. The mind of the author married a squid with a jaguar... surprised if one would not marry their hunting strategies... Hell, I'd be tempted to give their skin a suite of chromatophores so they could be actually invisible until striking distance

And the local village is expanding into their hunting lands. Some villagers have came up missing. Some remains have been found. Not eaten just killed/murdered.
Reports have been made day and at night people hearing a womans screaming deep in the woods. When they go looking theirs no trace of a woman. If theyake it back at all.

One of the biggest things I’ve noticed from these videos is how incorrectly, or incomplete, these monsters are designed in 5e. Yet another bad issue with that edition compared to pre-4e. Trust me folks, just play 1e-3.5e and forget the rest LOL

AJ had a displacer beast video planned at least a week before MrRhexx put out his, and AJ even mentioned that he would hold off for a couple weeks on doing his own out of courtesy for MrRhexx. Their videos may often touch on the same topics in D&D lore, but they almost always use at least slightly different information, and the ways they each present their information is very different. I think it's bad form to make petty accusations without doing your due diligence, but what do I know?
