Barbarian is actually a pretty good fit for The Doom Slayer, what with the rage fueled ripping and tearing, but with his specific hatred for demons and proficiency with more than melee weapons tells me he multiclassed with paladin, and took levels into ranger.
All perfect 20's or above, of course.

This is one of those times where you just have to call up Asmodius and tell him to clean up his mess. This is the sort of lore and character creation I wish the Tarasque had instead of just being mostly a big tough lizard.
I planning on have a cult dedicated to Zargon as the main threat in my upcoming campaign, so perfect timing.
I am as well, a question on preparation for you to quickly compare notes as a DM: What do the cultists get out of service to Zargon? I consider Zargon to be a nearly uncontrollable destructive force of nature, not in need of anything but freedom. Now that he has freedom, why would Zargon not simply eat or destroy those who worshipped him?
@@bsilvey3782 Well power of course also I'm have a cult of Graz'zt in the same city as they are. Zargon is going to be seen as a god on the world the pcs are playing in. He is consider a god of gluttony, immortality, and slime. His favored animals are oozes so the cult keeps them as pets in dedication to their "god". They are battling with other churches and cults in the city so they can assume total control. The cult of Graz'zt is the main enemy of the campaign though.
Always nice to see the ancient evils that thump around because they can.
Honestly, Asmodeus is possibly the most intriguing character in the d&d universe. On the surface, he's an analog for Satan, yet on the other hand, he occasionally steps in to save the world when even the gods can't.
Asmodeus was being pragmatic here. Zargon was the former ruler of Hell, it makes sense Asmodeus wouldn't want him around.
Yeah Asmodeus character is insanely perfect.
He gets the job done, on time, to the exact specifications of the contract and he is always willing to lend a hand, an ear, an army of devils, powerful artefact, or eldritch secret. Whatever you need - for a reasonable fee! He's a great guy! Just the friendlies salesman ever, it'll feel like you've been good friends for years after just a few minutes together.
Just make damn sure you read and fully undestand the contract before you sign, even if that means consulting an expensive business lawyer. It'll be a once in a lifetime deal! So make very, very, very, sure you get what you intended. After all, Asmodeus will get you exactly what you agreed upon. :)
Devils do the dirty work that the Gods are afraid to.
Elder Evils want to annihilate creation. Asmodeus just wants to rule it all. Nothing to rule if its all gone. In short, they annoy Asmodeus.
That scroll is so cool. Mini Zargon! I want to team Zargon up with Obox-ob. Horrid beings cast out of their rightful place as rulers of their respective planes. :D
The big problem is, both of them aren't as appealing to mortals as they'd like to be; not many are eager to worship gods representing slime or parasites.

Awesome video. Lore you can really sink your teeth into, its not just a big brute, but a big brute that hints at whole cosmological differences in the past that really gets you thinking, I love it.

For record, in Mystara, Cynicidea is located in sands of Ylaruam, one of the first Arabic-inspired places in D&D (making Al-Qadim a viable alternative for Forgotten Realms if you want to insert it!). The three deities Gorm, Usamigaras and Madarua are, in Mystara, Immortals (and as such, once-accended mortals) and not unique to Cynicidea, though some practices are very disctinct - most notably, most priesthoods of Madarua are not as militant. Zargon's connection to Baator was created for the Elder Evils book and is thus absent in original module, logically since Mystara featured a wholy distinct cosmology from the Great Wheel of AD&D.
In many ways, I prefer the Immortals of Mystara, but then, back when I played Basic, I never even thought much about D&D taking place in "a world".
@@AJPickett yes to no single world ! Actually I prefer the cosmology of Mystara (which my autocorrect treats as a misspelling of "mustard") but the FR are great as far as complexity and layering. When I was a kid we used to play in a mix of FR, Dragonlance and Mystara. And some stuff from the Marvel universe.

Asmodeus knows how to do things without the divine spark. Most gods seem to lean on their ability to shape reality as they see fit to the point it has become a crutch. I can see Asmodeus pimp slapping Zargon for eternity simply because he is not fool enough to make that mistake.
Reminds me of the second Conan the Barbarian movie, where an ancient evil god named Ahriman is summoned into the material plane by a diamond encrusted horn.

Let's put this in perspective. The 5th Ed. Player's Handbook says common sledgehammer costs 2 gp, and 10 gp equals 1 pp.
In 21st Century America, the cheapest sledgehammer bought at the Home Depot costs $30 (the most expensive $700, but we'll go with the cheapest here). That means a single platinum coin is equal to $150 in modern currency, meaning Zargon's horde is worth the equivalent of $1.35 million!
And keep in mind, it would likely have gotten bigger if he stayed around for longer. Not that your typical eldritch abomination truly needs money for any reason other than bragging rights, I might add.

I wonder if deep imaskar or high imaskar would have interest in the Cynidiceans? since they were imaskari ones and underground civilizations and also oddly enough have too deal with an elder evil too. Man the imaskari just can't seem to get a break.🤔
The Imaskari came a little bit after I think, by the time they rose to power, the Cynidiceans were just a legend.
Why are most elder evils and eldritch horrors always oozy and slimy in their composition? Perhaps it has something to do with their primordial nature and the lack of (or necessity) for singular solid or ascertainable forms?

Pretty much yeah, they are beings that rose up from the primordial chaos and had no fixed rules for what form they would take... fluid, aggressive and highly adaptable fit the random, maelstrom of conditions and the subsequent eons of harsh existence.

I get the feeling that turning up at the Caldera after a seriously gnarly fight with Zargon, only to be attacked by lake monsters, and the island of undead and then a pack of Flame Salamanders and Efreet at the volcano.... IT'S A TRAP!
Most Elder Evils are impaired in some way, usually a result of whatever prison they've been trapped in.

Perhaps Asmo is actually keeping him around as a last ditch trump card to play should the Gods ever try to cross him.
@@Im-Not-a-Dog This is why the lore that Zargon can be destroyed by having his horn tossed into some lava is probably not true... and all that will happen is the horn ends up being encased in rock again... exactly how Asmodeus did it the first time.

Damn it! Now I'm going to have to work out how to kill the unkillable.
Probably would have to reduce him to just the horn, and then have a God destroy him while he's unable to block their power....unless he can still do this as just a horn.
Hmmmm....his existence could he tied to that of Baator itself, which would make things a lot more complicated because, well, it would require ending the blood war and then destroying Baator and the Abyss. In which case I'd try finding a way to force Baator back through the Abyss to the heart, somehow binding the layers to the Hells as they pass through, folding the Abyss in on itself and hopefully causing it to eat itself and the Hells in a strange form of planar self-cannibalization.
In any case, its more easily said than done. But given the fact that this thing may have actually survived the destruction of a reality or two, its probably a lot more complicated like a series of specific events have to happen across the multiverse for him to become vulnerable to death, or something so simple that its been overlooked as absurd, like just eating the horn.
He’s a pre devil fiend not a demon nor obyrith. Lawful evil. I love this monster. Worthy of only the mightiest of adventurers. ❤
I’m thinking that Zargon is actually the horn, and its regenerating body is more like a construct it creates. Given that the regeneration of the body is time based , I’d plane shift that horn deep in the Astral Sea. Let the Gith drop it on a mind flayer planet

I'd probably look to Gate that horn into the negative energy plane, to ruin his regeneration and keep him in a constant dormant state until he drifts into some massive sphere of annihilation and stays there until the end of the universe. I'd rather just not have him anywhere with living things to infect. Seems worth having to fight a Nightwalker to get him stuck somewhere he'd have a very, very difficult time getting out of once the Nightwalker is dead.

@@epiccthulu Well, the Gate goes exactly where I want it... so the most existense annihilating area is where I'd intend for the horn to emerge. Somewhere so bad not even immunity to necrotic damage will prevent annihilation and not allow anything in or out... tricky to achieve. I think I need to read up on Negative Energy plane lore and rewatch AJ's info about it tomorrow (sleepy time now).
I guess there's always "Dump it as far out into the Far Realm as it can possibly go!". Let the eldritch horrors play with each other. :P
Based on the intro alone, I can tell you put a lot into this.
(And that you probably have a love for elder evils like you do for demons and devils.)

@@LurkerDaBerzerker My Gnome folk Hero managed to one shot, one kill this powerful giant in the first round of combat against it.. rolled a Nat 20 and lopped it's head clean off it's shoulders. He put hours of work into planning that encounter and he had to resurrect the bad guy at the very start of the fight, rather than much later on. I thought it was the funniest thing ever!

So awhile back I made a race of Humans for the Monster Mash called the Yaaz, that worship "The Ruby Wingged God", who is really just Asmodeus pretending to be, or possibly actually acting as, a Lawful Good God. I think I just figured out who their Devil figure should be; "The Unkillable Evil", "The Horn of The Darkness", "The Bane of Gods", Zargon the Returned!!!
I'm a little surprised that Zargon has not attempted to escape over the centuries. One would think that Asmodeus has been keeping an eye on "it" but as a deity his power to keep Zargon down may have diminished. There in lies a great adventure hook; a group of good players working on behalf of Asmodeus to keep an even larger evil force down. The irony is almost too much :)
Corey Easton the awesome thing about it is that Asmodeus knows the good guys are less likely to betray or manipulate the situation than his own devil underlyings. His chosen, Farideh, maintained her Neutral Good alignment despite it all
Also, Asmodeus isn't really a deity. Its why he could suppress Zargon. But you'll notice...even Asmodeus couldn't defeat Zargon completely. He IS the only one that defeated him in battle tho.
I would think Asmodeus would always be a threat to Zargon, as why would he lose the abilities he had before he became divine himself? But it would require the same level of effort that was put forth for that first win. I can see a treacherous underling trying to use a resurgence of Zargon as a good chance to stage a coup. And Asmodeus keeping some adventurers as champions for just such an inevitability.

I've been researching Zargon and the ancient baatorians for weeks now, trying to find any little reference to shed more light on what they were like. See, I was running Keep on the Borderlands and decided to throw in the Tower of Zenopus as a filler dungeon beneath the bandit's camp. In one of the empty rooms, I filled it with mirrors and a door that would lock after a single person entered. Upon being trapped, they would start hearing the sounds of cicadas, see a cave filled with fire reflecting off the mirrors, and then Z-daddy would show up. If the person had this special rod in hand, Zargon would behave and they could talk to him. Unfortunately, we left the rod back in the bank because we had no idea what it was, so the one PC that went in got pulled by Zargon into his lair in the Lost City, flayed alive, and almost eaten. The PC wriggled free and got dropped back into the mirror room. The rest of the party broke their way through the wall, rescued him, and ran. Those who were looking into the room saw Zargon, had to make a sanity check, and some now have PTSD just from seeing him.

i have a adventure for 5th edition called "the lost city" that is by Original Adventures Revised. Zargon is the main villain of a cult in this city. this is a very fun adventure. though the group i ran it for all died once they got through the pyramid and actually reached the lost city

So much so I had the google it. I did find an article that said Lovecraft and Howard were fans of each other.
On another note a good bit of Mystara adventures can be put into the FR setting fairly easy. A lot of the adventures were made before there was a firm world setting.
The lore surrounding Zargon gives me heavy Conan The Destroyer vibes.
Funny that Zargon has the same name as the main villain of the boardgame Heroquest (US version). Classic high-fantasy villain name.
Funnily enough the adventure that introduces him is partially inspired by the Conan story Red Nails.

As evil as Asmodeus is, I can't help but always root for him and feel hyped like a fanboy when he shows up in lore. I guess that's why I'm a DM and not a player.

It is because, despite how you know he means you no good fortune, he is seemingly far more competent than most gods. Which is preferable? A benign god that you suspect will just screw up or a malicious devil you know will refuse to fail?

Asmodeus stepped right out of Nessus and onto the prime material and Mphistopheles didn't do a dang thing?
If he had the means to do so he would have. Asmodeus is just that powerful and clever. Only the arrogant and foolish take on Asmodeus without being absolutely sure they can win.
Mephistoph Realize that it was something he wanted no part of and thus stayed out of. For all of his power, even he understands that. What is going on between asmo. And zargon is something that is far beyond. Any petty battle between the fiends. The very existence of Zargon in and of himself is a threat to every single fiend. No matter what part of the lower planes, they inhabit. So wisely he made the decision to stay out of it. Also it meant that even if Asmo wins, It would give him a possible chance to take him out when he was weakened after the fight. Which is essentially 101 policy For fiends in general when it comes to wanting to rise in the rank
I was really into dungeons and dragons back in middle school. Unfortunately due to real world stuff I wasn’t able to stay in the game. And I had all but forgotten about it. But thanks to your videos I’ve been able to jump back into it and the best part is, my wife who had never heard of dungeons and dragons before now she’s really into it now. And that’s all thanks to your videos. So thank you very much. And keep up the videos they’re awesome.

I know that every setting except for forgettable realms is basically dead now but I still hate how the realms absorb steal from every other setting. Zargon belongs to Mystara damn it.
Zargon is an awesome npc to spice up games as are all dnds...memorable characters and require masterful weaving to fold into your stories thank God for demi.plane spells. Whoops not available in New version of the game. Lol.
Would you rather Zargon just molders in old books that only a few people play, or would you want him enjoyed by all the new players to the game, to share in the experience which made you love the hobby?

To be fair, there is a sort of conspiracy in the Forgotten Realms between the Good and Evil powers, that intends to keep things like zargon, tharisdune, and the demons from taking over the world.

Zargon is akin to the "Plane of Madness" campaign I home-brew ran. I ran that in the 90s, so forgive how I transgress with this story.
A big bad evil mage cast a level 10 spell (different rules you covered, homebrew rules). Exile, cast by said evil mage with his avatar and two other casters.
The planet was sucked in and had insane reasons its nature did not die out and also the needs for how it would survive. Back then, it was insane. Now, it's like an online or video game quest.
I had an entire planet sucked into that plane of madness where everyone was a combat role, talking out of combat was easy experience points if they consider most of the session role-playing and not rolling dice with combat declarations.
So, now, this Zargon is a big planar BBE... one that dwarfs my smallest cosmic BBE. I mean, my smallest BBE is a mortal Loom Dragon hatchling that is as big as a major city when coiled up, speaks and understands all languages, has pregognative abilities that are so massively revealing that they don't care about anything for the most part, they can shapechange instantly as a free action into any from (even to do a strike, do it, and shapechange out of it), do any kind of Dragon Breath, etc.
Zargon is cool, totally cool. In Loom of Magus, he'd be a tiny immoral "mortal" Loom Dragon or some other immortal. He'd be an awesome character with my divinity level campaigns.

Absolutely, I was aware of the Tomb Tappers from way back, but the Magen were a new thing for me and I thing they are great!

Wonderful I was already starting a new LOST CITY campaign and this could not be better timed! Thank you
I’m busy creating my own home brew version of LOST CITY. I’m cutting out a lot of the lower levels though as I feel the monsters down there are a bit of a random selection and I worry that any party will spend about a year playing through the whole city. I want it to be part of a wider ranging campaign. So for me, I’ve de-buffed Zaragon to CR5 as the party will be level 4 when they meet him. Maybe the creature they meet is a kind of avatar of Zargon.
When Milton Bradley brought HeroQuest over to the U.S. from Games Workshop in the early 90's, they changed the big baddie's name from Morcar to Zargon. Probably to avoid copyright issues with the name Morcar, who was tied to the GW background. I think I'm going to incorporate the D&D Zargon into this canon, and have Morcar be the same guy, who is possessed by the Elder Evil. Continuities merged!

Really sounds like demmogorgon has the best shot of taking him down now out of anyone other than maybe another Elder evil.
Zargon has just as good a chance of destroying Demogorgon. That is the problem. Gods lose power in his presence, others evil powers fear him. He may not have the direct might to win against all comers but he can, seemingly, regenerate from all fates inflicted on him. And thus outlast even the most powerful of the elder evils.
@@jacobfreeman5444 Zargon may be tough, but we are talking about the prince of demons here. There is nothing Zargon can really do to Demogorgon. I mean Demogorgon really does just have every possible tool he would need to deal with Zargon who has almost no special resistances to anything Demogorgon has. And Demogorgon is no diety so Zargon’s best feature is out. And that’s before we start looking at raw stats. I mean it’s sad but there really is no contest between the two. .
come to think of it, I think Demogorgon is more likely to seek out an alliance with Zargon if anything. You know, because of the blood war.
Demo would slap him silly but might lack the intelligence to figure out how to destroy him forever
Grazzt and Pazuzu stand the best chances of figuring that one out

Wouldn't you think that after so many years there would be a level of inbreeding? Add in the ghastly leeching of contained evil and I'd think their mutations would be parallel to Zargon. Special cases would see them revered if they have the single eye, horn or freaky whip arms.
There is also a lot of human sacrifice, so those with "The touch of Zargon" get eaten.

@@st4ne4rmthevill63 Well my brother, his wife and a mutual friend of ours are the players with a Rogue Bard Half Elf gor my brothers wife, A Ranger Druid firblog for my brother, and a Paladin Barbarian Fighter for our friend. They are gonna be on a large island with warring races but have together to be able to stop the ones summoning zargon on the island. So they just went through a Labrynthian style Temple for about 3 sessions. It was to late though for this world, A sect of cultists has already summoned the avatar, but the resounding magical energy forced them to an alternate dimension, the start of my world. They are currently making friends with the Wild Dwarves of the southern jungles, trying to help tame a herd of mammoths.
You know you're badass when you thrash a host of divine avatars and it takes Asmodeus himself to stepping in to deal with you and even that is only temporary...
