- First run that managed to no-miss, no-bomb all the way to the 2-6 boss and no-miss to Hachi/Hibachi.
The scoring consists of about three major factors. Chaining, the maximum bomb bonus and bees.
Chaining is enemy chaining, the meter in the top-left indicates the time remaining to kill the next enemy before the combo runs out. Killing things with shot gives more meter than laser. Lasering big enemies keeps the chain meter fixed at a very low point. In the 2nd loop the chaining is more lenient. The meter drains slower and killing any enemy with shot gives you full meter.
The other major part to the scoring is the maximum bomb bonus. This is a bonus that continually gives you score per frame during stages. You activate if by picking up a bomb item after your bomb stock is already full. You'll keep the bonus so long as you don't die or bomb. The bonus keeps increasing the more bomb items you pick up. You don't gain any more score from it once you reach the 2-6 boss. Here's a graph of the total score increase: pastebin.com/r...
Around the stages are hidden bee items. You uncover them by lasering them. Each bee picked up increases in value over the previous one. Picking up all the bees in a stage makes the values be x2 for the next stage. Dying resets the bees for the stage.
This is less known, but bullet cancels actually give score in this game. This is mostly seen at the stage 3 cancel ships and when you destroy the wings on Hibachi. Beside that there's also no-miss bonuses for the stages, there's a 10 million reward for every remaining life at the end of the game and there's boss hits. There's one scoring bomb on the 2-6 boss when his health turns red. Doing this gives you many, many hits on it.
In order to get to the 2nd loop you need to meet any of the following requirements:
- 2-miss or less.
- Get a certain maximum hit count, this is different for every ship.
Type A: 270 hits
Type B: 300 hits
Type C: 330 hits
- Get 50 million or more score at the end of the 1st loop.
- Collect all bees in four of the six stages.
Full maximum bomb bonus, but unfortunately chaining wasn't super hot. Could easily have been over 600 million.

CerealKiller that game was pretty crazy but there were more popcorn enemies trying to kamikaze you than actual bullets most of the time
This was the game that introduced me to Cave. As soon as I started playing I knew it was a cut above everything before. Been a big fan ever since. Saidaioujou on Steam when??

Hibachi is just ridiculously hard. I don't blame him for losing a few lives and spamming bombs there.

One question, if you get a game over in loop 1, does the game deny you any chance of entering loop 2, even if you already fulfilled one of the other requirements?

Did not know you could cheese the stage 4 boss like that. Minute its lasers were destroyed it sat there like a lemming & just took it raw-dog.
That final boss... arrowheads spinning bullets... and a blood red background that scrolls up... was alice inspired by ALSO this guy?? (If this game came before those touhou games, that is, if thatLs not the case is that a reference?)

I checked the lore of this series, and alice was totally inspired by this.
Both for the horror and gore and the doll motif as humans/robots and stuff present in this.
Fannintendociccio1 Dodonpachi came out before Touhou 2 (the first Touhou bullet hell game) but the element doll stuff was introduced in Dodonpachi Daioujou, which came out in 2002, long after Mystic Square.
Shepardus yeah, i saw the dates too, but i think it may have played a part into pcb and dolls in pseudo paradise alice, mystic square alice actually didn't have anything doll related at that time, just alice in wonderland themes (except those familiars in her battle, but i'm sure those were supposed to be just fairies before alice got updated later in windows)
I think pcb and dipp were after or at the same time as this game. (Maybe, i don't remember the dates)
Do you play on a cab and if so, what joysticks do you use - or is it mame on a PC with keyboard...?
Is there anything remotely close to this in Touhou? I remember trying out Embodiment of Scarlet Devil way back and thinking it was boring and slow compared to games like this and RFJ.
