KAMUI, released in 1999 by Siter Skain, even now still holds its place as one of the best doujin shmups ever made.
Siter Skain eventually went on to make the Tale of ALLTYNEX trilogy but I still think that Kamui is the best of the three if only because of its simple but elegant scoring system.
As you might be able to tell the game draws a lot of inspiration from Rayforce in both the mechanics as well as bosses/backgrounds and thus all the enemies are either in the foreground or in the background. In the foreground you can shoot them with your shot and the powerful laser which also cancels bullets. Enemies in the background you can lock with screen-wide homing lightning.
For scoring you want to kill as many enemies as possible in the background since you get a multiplier for doing that unlike killing them normally. How high this multiplier is depends on how charged up your lightning meter is when you release the locks with a maximum of x16 when the meter is fully charged. You can accelerate the rate of recharge by holding the lock button.
Another important trick in this game is something I like to call "deathlocking". Some enemies when they are killed drop to the background for a few frames before they explode and in that short instant you can lock them with homing lasers.

Imagine if CAVE and Siter Skain teamed up to make a shoot 'em up...
Also, the destruction of Xaffiquel at 33:32... that has to be the most epic final boss explosion in _any_ shmup.
A lot of this game reminds me of Thunder Force 5. The boss designs, the stages, the music, the score multipliers you can get on enemies...hell, even your straightforward lightning attack. At first I thought it was like "what if the Guardian had defeated Vambrace"
It's actually a Rayforce clone more than anything. Sprite scaling for depth, scoring by aiming for enemies below you, fighting through tunnels and a giant, white underground city and so on. Even the ship's design. Makes me wish there was a modern Ray inspired game just like Devil Engine for TF.

Yup love all three of these games as soon as I saw them on Icarusfw twitch channel. Alltyanx second, ReFleX and Kamui are all amazing games.
SiterSkain the three man company that made these games are a tight nit group who make games as a hobby. They all have day jobs. NYU Media did a fantastic job porting all three games and showed such respect to the source material.
SiterSkain are working on another game and have been for years. It's a mech kinda game is all I know.
Support this game, game Devs (SiterSkain) and publishers ( NYUMedia) please. They diserve your money for releasing these masterpieces in North America and translated.
Good job. One of my all-time favorite games.
