Yeah, I just returned (again) after a few years. First played when Ruins of Kunark launched way back when. Really appreciating the content, keep it coming.
"Back in the day" (Paladin in full raid gear till PoP or 1 or so expansions later) my best liked combo was my pally plus a enchanter = tank + dps (against undead) + heal (from 59 on he got his first HoT) + haste + slow + cc = perfect in spaces where the healing from the pally was enough - remember this is coming from a pally with raid equipment (NToV, Luclin, PoP, etc.) = large hp pool, lots of ac, hp + mana regen, etc.
The more I play a Paladin atm, I feel like they are S+ tier. In harder content, the paladin really shines more than I expected. ST Heals/Group Heals, Heal over Times, 3 different oh shit heals. 3 defensive abilities. Progression with a paladin has been trivial, easier than my last SK run. My deaths have been purely user error, harder content is easy. VS Undead my DPS is higher than dps classes and if I want I can perma stun lock anything and take little damage. Definitely going to reevaluate these rankings in 2024.
@@hammackj I did pally/necro around 80....but it was on mischief were getting BIS gear is easy. Beastlord Pet Tank + 2H Shadowknight / Fighter + Healer Mercs is an insane combo for later expansions. I am currently running this combo on Ragefire. I also did Pally for Undead seeing as there is often a lot of undead. having the extra DPS is very noticeable. A ranger, raid geared and well played could easily be S tier. I also had a mage (raid geared) before the Pally and it was the same situation, the pets could easily tank, mercs heal pet but it was more DPS overall, but Pally could kill bigger mods and tank multi mobs without almost any attention as a Box, the mage took a lot of work with pets to offtank. My ranger could slow fast on any Named with Epic and the spam proc AA. You also have to consider the buffs and how they stack with pally. Instant group invizo, undead invizo, SoE, snare root, AE root are great. Ranger could pull 15 mobs easily, AE root and pluck them out 1 by one for chain pulls that sit 20 feet away from the Duo.

I agree with you on shaman duo superiority when paired with any of the melee/physical classes (sk, monk, ranger, etc), but if your "main" is any of the caster/priest classes, then I think the bard is clearly the best duo. Especially if you're factoring in mercs, so you don't need shamans healing, the bard does much more to amplify a caster class. Warrior/shaman is great. Raid gear makes everything outside of raids trivial. I am certain tho with T3 group gear everything group is trivial as its pretty trivial to me with a paladin in t1 group gear. I ran War/Shaman on TLP from 1 to 60 and it was great until the shaman couldn't keep up with heals. That's not a problem on live, as later expansions give Shamans the tools the need. Anything + shaman makes a great duo, there is just extra value things I consider like FD when placing the rankings. Everyone has their own opinions of how this would go.
Buh, enchanter druid, double charm, mez , clarity, druids get baby full heal, damage shield, spirit of the wolf, teleports. huge dmg with the double charm plus mez when the charm breaks. i can duo without any help or mercs. This sounds like a PEBKAC or gear problem. I have four Shaman at 85 (different servers cuz I love me some Shaman) and my current one is at 90, only one being raid geared (such as it is), and I've never had mana issues outside of the late 20s (Greater Healing is MURDER on a mana bar when you first get it). In the days of the Kunark Express, I've main healed groups in OT and the Dreadlands with a Shaman and even underleveled in Howling Stones when the cleric went down against the Crypt Feaster. We kept pulling until she ran back. Load up on HM gear, with AC if you melee your shaman. +regen is great as well.
@@hammackj sweet thanks for the advice. I have never played past pop usually my friend group stops playing. However this time around I started really late and don’t have anyone playing so I was just curious on the duo that would be easy to group with but also not against just playing one of the toons here and there if the party only needs one or the other. Will definitely have to try sk/sham at some point since that combo seems more fun even if only controlling one of them. Where clr/ench I almost never want to pilot only the clr
I always find Slow to be overrated personally. While Shamans are nice, they lack critical utility I find necessary. Druid is my ideal box class. Snare+Dmg Shield+Regen+Ports just can't be beaten.
Shm has same regen as Dru, Shm has Root, and Shm has haste(about equals dmg shield). I'd consider the 2 the S Tier of Box Classes. The only more versatile than those 2 is a Bard, but it lacks 'excelling' at anything, so it's probably A Tier.
You can get 20k+ in damage shields, slowing mobs just makes that take longer to work. I only slow named Slowing isn't needed at all on live for the most part.
What would be a non-traditional but still viable duo that would provide sought after classes at end game? There are lots of necros, mages, sks and shamans at the high end for the very reasons you've talked about. Also interested in your experience with various trios, excluding sk, shm, bard since that's mine =)
@@hammackj how do you think a war/dru/ranger would do? No slow - difficult cc and lots of redundancy with dru and ranger, but I figure once the ranger can autofire and headshot, it would be very simple to box - but I worry about the cons.
TLP or live this should do well. I’d run 2 dps mercs and a healer merc. Then only heal with druid if you have too. War + Dru is fun, I’ve done that. Ranger are really good too

Hard to decide between enc/clr and sk/Shm for tlp
I’d say enc clr till omens is solid then sk / sham till 125. But sk/sham is good till 125 just slow in classic.
I dont see how damage shield is relevant after luclin ...
Slow is 99% necessary from classic and in any group.
You can get 20k+ in damage shields, slowing mobs just makes that take longer to work. I only slow named Slowing isn't needed at all on live for the most part.
Yeah, slowing isn't as needed as people say. I only slow the named mobs, Druid DS is insane at 100+
What would be a non-traditional but still viable duo that would provide sought after classes at end game? There are lots of necros, mages, sks and shamans at the high end for the very reasons you've talked about. Also interested in your experience with various trios, excluding sk, shm, bard since that's mine =)
Nec + mag + dru is fun. Honestly any 3 is probably going to be able to do most content.
Ranger are really good too
Druids and rangers get roots with punts you can use in a pinch.
Slow+Haste+Heals=Gawd Tier
Yes. =)
That’s pretty much BST right?
Classic: Monk/Shaman
Yeah great duo on TLP, not so great at 120 on live.
So as a returning player would you say Sk and shaman for 120 on live? I have returned to the game after a 10+ year break. I have an 85 SK/Shaman/Monk/Bard and only want to two box.@@hammackj
Magician pet tanks. Use wizard to nuke mobs die fast because wizard nukes was better than mage.
Ill have to try it out. THanks for the input
Those are grind duos, but sooner or later you want to get augs and gear, then what do you do?¨Not many combos can handle a boss without slow...
hence the shaman
trio vid!
On the list.
Miss you bro, you doing the new tlp? ….heretick
You play on Project Quarm any?
No. I only play retail at the moment. EMU have like zero content I haven’t done a billion times.
@hammackj Quarm has original Freeport from 1999. It also has around 1,900 simultaneous players on the server during peak hours. It also doesn't have an in-game microtransaction window or anything to buy. I've done it all a billion times too. I do enjoy doing it better than a TLP (no in-game store) and less rushed.
@hammackj oh.... and true box is enforced. Waaaaay better than Yelinak.
IMHO should have been one tile per class combo. Interesting opinions nonetheless.
Like SK + SHAM as one? Thanks for the feedback.
@@hammackj Right, like one tile is half SK and half shaman, another is half paladin half druid, etc. Basically 120 tiles to rate. 😉 Would be a long but fun process I think.
Anyone on bristlebane wanna group 120 shaman
I have a lfg room on discord that might help.
First!
Welcome!
you know it’s funny watching your videos i remember you saying shaman and shadow nights were both overrated then in this video you basically say they’re the strongest🤣🤣
I know right. =\
Sooo go sk and shammy 😅 i actually run that with a wizzy in the back for dropping mobs fast when need be or evac if need be
Sk shaman is pretty strong. Shamans are so good. I prefer bard as my 3rd with bst/mag/mag to fill.
@@hammackj I was thinking of a bard but never played one plus my brother played a wizzy, I also enjoy throwing out a nuke and watching the mobs health just get decimated, plus it's in a sk/shammy group so it's just icing on the top really
Back back when i first played eq my brother and a few of his buddies was helping me with my clerics epic well his buddy was on his sk and this dude was damn near pulling the whole zone and pretty much soloed em was for the pearl drop, either way after seeing the sk's power not long after i made a sk never looked back, side not funny story the sk was taking alot of dmg so i healed and died he goes just sit on top of this rock and dont worry well he got crazy with a pull and he was dying and i let him 😅 after that he was like well heal me if I get too low 😅 ... now i moved on to wow and honestly the sk is still my favorite class in any mmorpg ive played i still play from time to time tho just play wow more take care much love
SK is a powerful class even after all the needs over the years. It is crazy how good they are.
@@hammackj Not to mention a fun class to play! I go troll for slam and regen.
