How to use the Wagner Fence & Decking Sprayer with Craig Phillips

- See how to setup, use, clean and maintain the WAGNER Fence & Decking Sprayer with Craig Phillips.
We all know it is important to maintain, fences, decking, sheds and garden furniture to make them last and to keep them looking good but painting with a brush is both time consuming and difficult.
However, painting them can be completed quickly and easily with a WAGNER electric Fence and Decking sprayer.
Craig shows what is included with the Fence and Decking sprayer, how to detach the handle to quickly change paint, refill or clean the gun. He also explains about water and solvent-based paints with how to dilute them and carry out a test spray onto an old scrap of cardboard. The importance of the feed tube is explained if you are spraying downwards or spraying above you as well as how to change the spray pattern.
Craig covers clean up when you’ve finished your project, you simply empty the contents of the container back into the original paint pot. Then spray it through until clear with water or solvent depending on the type of paint which was used. You will see how to dismantle the gun to clean the components, dry, lubricate and re-assemble the machine.

Just got one of these today. Painted 12 6x6 panels in about 40 minutes, including machine set up, and refilling. God bless the people who invented this. Was dreading doing this job with a brush. Easy to use and clean. Brilliant finish also. Definitely recommend it. 👍🇬🇧🤓

Mine kept on getting clogged, paint is 2 years old though even when thinned with water.

Just got mine today as well. Diagonal wooden slats with gaps between each piece of wood. Wasn't looking forward to painting this fence, but the Wagner made it so simple. Think it took longer to mask up and clean the sprayer than actuall paint the fence. So easy to use and i've never used a paint sprayer before.

I picked up this sprayer over a year ago to do the masses of lap fencing I have but never got motivated to do it. This year we hand painted the first coat which took 2 weeks of stints. today I got out the sprayer and have done the whole second coat in a few hours. I can believe how quick it was and the coverage was great as well, fence looks like new.

Hi how did u find the sprayer?
@@Whoshotmyrifle - I would say that my experience with it was overall a good one. However I think I probably used more paint on the fence than I would have done if I had just brushed it on. It did make what would have been a boring job a lot more fun though. Also I found that if I did not dilute the paint that the hose would pop off due to the air pressure. It was easy to remedy by adding a splash of water to each paint tin though.

With over 90sq/m of fencing to paint I was dreading it. I bought the sprayer hoping to make life a little easier. I will NEVER paint a fence with a brush again! It was so simple and fast. I did 2 coats this morning and will do the other 1/2 of the fencing tomorrow. The coverage is perfect, no lines or streaks and the job done in 2.5 hrs including a break for lunch.
One tip would be to thin the paint (if you are going to thin it) in the paint container it came in and not the small sprayer container. Do it that way you will have it well mixed and its easy to refill the sprayer and you only thin the main paint once.

Hi Wayne, the performance of this machine is designed for thinner materials like fence stain etc - unfortunately that means it is not really up to spraying emulsions and wall paints etc. Please see one of our more powerful machines such as the W590.

Hello Wayne If you're looking for a consumer sprayer for doing work on your own home for spraying exterior walls this would not be suitable. question need to know please...used this for a fence and was brilliant! I have newly plastered walls in a house.. floorboards are all off so not bothered about mess. Can I use this spray gun for emulsion water based paint? It's to spray a mist coat onto newly plastered walls which is 50/50 emulsion and water. Any help would be appreciated! Aidan.
Hello We are very pleased to hear that the fence and decking sprayer worked very well for you. This however would not be a suitable machine for spraying emulsion paint even if it was watered down. It is designed specifically for wood and metal paints. For spraying emulsion paint you would need to look at one of our universal sprayers like the W590 or the W 690 machine or an airless sprayer. I’ve used mine for 6 weeks now nothing comes out I’ve put some water in it to just test it I pull the trigger nothing comes out it’s like it’s blocked I’ve tried to unblock everything but how do you unblock the tiny nozzle at the front ?
Paint dilution: 'if your paint has to be diluted?' - how do we know that in advance? For instance does WAGNER recommend paints to use? And for instance the 2 main brands of fence pain Cuprinol and Ronseal - do you have recommendations - if to dilute and how much by?
Hello Steve, you make a good point. There are many factors that affect the thickness of the paint not just the different makes of paint but also if it's new or old, the temperature of the paint and conditions you are spraying in. The best starting point is to mix the paint in the original tin and see if it runs like this section of the video ua-cam.com/video/fNTviUyKleU/v-deo.html if the paint leaves trails on the surface and doesn't dissolve instantly it is too thick and you need to dilute. This is either with water or whatever the paint manufacturer recommends for diluting their product. Once you have the paint setup is always advisable to do a test spray onto a scrap of cardboard to check the spray pattern before actually starting your project. I have noticed the air is continuous once switching on the machine, any idea how to control it and just have it when pressing the trigger because I have used a lacquer and because of the power of the continuous air I have ended with uneven finish and not levelled at all and ended with a missy finish even I have bought extra gravity extension part Where the pot at the top and 😢costed me extra £34 ☹️ is there any pressure valve gauge extension to set it it to a certain recommended psi pressure can be connected please and how to clean the sprayer from the lacquer at the end , your advice is really appreciated thank you.
Hello Zain With the Fence and Decking sprayer you can’t control the air pressure. If you need more controls for the volume of paint and air a suitable sprayer is the W590 Flexio Sprayer. This will also work with the Gravity accessory that you have. This is a Universal sprayer which means it is for spraying both wood and metal paint and also can be used for emulsion if you’re doing work on interior walls and ceilings. Does this unit blow air out of the nozzle but then spray the paint when you press the trigger? I’m just checking mine is working correctly

Can you use this to spray other projects ie indoor furniture or cabinets?
Yes, but you'll need to do a serious amount of masking up and cover ALL the surrounding area. The fine paint mist will travel!! Hope this helps.

Hello James thank you for the question. Some people have used Ducksback successfully with the Fence and Decking sprayer however others have had to clean the machine frequently during use. Can you tell me what way the blue valve should be inserted? Mine seemed to be inserted the wrong way compared to the diagram on the side. I noticed this when inspecting it before first use. I was a bit disappointed with the performance of it at first. Its quite a noisy thing and I could only get a good spray once I watered the paint down. (Cuprinol Ducksback)

However, Cuprinol Ducksback is a wax-enriched, water-based paint with a thick consistency, which can clog the sprayer. To avoid this, use the paint at a warm temperature and strain it before use. Hi. I have one of these and air passes through with out the trigger pressed so when you press the trigger no addition pressure seems to spray the paint. Has anyone had this or know what is wrong? Any help would be really appreciated
Hello Glen, it sounds like there may be an issue with the nozzle or trigger mechanism. Check the nozzle and ensure it is not clogged or damaged if any dried paint gets on the needle or nozzle it prevents it sealing. Also Inspect the trigger to make sure it’s functioning properly. There’s a little blue gromit that’s comes out of somewhere… where’s it from ??
Just bought one, worked really well for half an hour then no paint would come through. I've cleaned it multiple times but still nothing. Unless I water the paint down to around a 50/50 mix.

What paint are you using? Cuprinol ducksbacks works a treat in the gun, 2:1 ratio is a perfect mix I've found out

@@markdobbie2968 that seems very strange that you have to do a 50/50 mix, are you pre mixing it in another container first? Or straight into the guns reservoir? I use a 2litre bucket and pre mix my material First then pour that into the guns reservoir after.
Hello Mark most fence paint don’t need any dilution provided it is at room temperature when you use it. Hello Lennie Most Ronseal fence paints do not require dilution when used with the Wagner Fence and Decking sprayer, provided they are at room temperature. However, if the paint is particularly thick or the sprayer is having trouble, you might need to dilute it slightly. It’s always best to check the manufacturer's recommendations on the paint tin. Can this system be used for creosote?
Hello Wyn, As a product I don't think creosote is available anymore. However if there are substitute products these certainly would be sprayable using the fence and decking sprayer. How do you know if your paint needs diluting or not??
He said that if you dip something in the paint and lift it out that the paint should drop back into the container without it staying on top of the paint that is already in the tin. 2:49

Hello John, Car sprayers often use specialist paints and processes and air compressors which generate very fine material droplets this Fence and Decking sprayer is not design for spraying cars. I know this spray gun says for fence and decking and there is other models for likes of cabinets. Do you think I would get away with using this gun for also spraying laminated cabinets or is it not as fine of a finish?

Hello Mark, it sounds like you have diluted far too much, the consistency of the paint should be no less than single cream. It sounds like something needs to be corrected on the attachment, we would suggest going through the process of cleaning it and make sure all the components are there and tighten correctly. Sky. I think your right, you should go elsewhere and buy a really cheap weak sprayer that will be awful to use. It will be much quieter. Or spend 50p on foam ear plugs if your too delicate and get a proper job done with this, but your probably better off paying a man to do the job for you.

My choice of fence preserver is Ronseal one coat. which has the consistency of double cream , will the 460 watt unit cope please. and please please turn off that hideous soundtrack.
Hello Peter you should be able to spray no problem, you might need to dilute it. Water based paints are easier to dilute and also easier to clean the machine afterwards. Kind Regards the WAGNER DIY Team
