    We head to Oklahoma to do some calf sorting and working! I do my best to hold the camera steady while running around sorting cows and calves, trying not to get run over. I split this up into two parts. Be on the lookout for Part 2 of the calf working.
    Black baldies and Charolais bulls.

    Nice to see there are some Americans who can handle cattle quietly and without too much screaming and abuse of the animals, good looking stock well done.

      one pup thanks. Yes, always try to handle them as easily as possible. Less stress on both ends.

    Working cattle almost never runs perfect or according to plan. The best advice would be to take smaller bites moving smaller groups will encourage constant flow of cattle sepically when moving them to and through a tub.

    You’ll always have a couple of calves that will give you trouble. Makes it easier to pick them out during sale time lol

    A dog can get you in trouble with cows that have calves, my mother in law stepped out of her truck to check on a new born calf when her lap dog jump out and the cow ran over her and the dog broke her ribs and punctured her lungs.

    Why don’t you leave a couple of gates open and let the cows eat down the corrals and alleys ?

    • @TheFarmGuy
      @TheFarmGuy  4 роки тому

      Caleb Thacker we keep them locked up year round until it’s time to use them. It’s pretty much all Johnson grass as well which can be poisonous when under stress so we don’t really take a chance with it.

    I know in the short-term you have to make do with the setup you have, but I've seen two people sort calves a LOT faster and easier with the right gate & fence setup.

    • @TheFarmGuy
      @TheFarmGuy  5 років тому

      aCycloneSteve it really didn’t take a whole lot of time. Which system are you referring to?

    • @aCycloneSteve
      @aCycloneSteve 5 років тому +1

      @@TheFarmGuy You have one person gently push the cattle down an alley. At the end of the alley there is a turn with the new alley split in half. They are both plenty big enough for a cow to confidently enter. At the turn there is also a steel bar (or two) high enough that a calf can duck through (or a panicked cow could push through) but low enough that a cow under light pressure won't try to get through. You have the second person stand at the inside elbow of the turn and let the cows go down the open half size alley. When a calf tries to follow the person leans toward them giving a little pressure. The calf instinctively ducks under the bar and follows mom but now on the other side of the fence. Mom doesn't panic because her calf is right there. The calf doesn't for the same reason.
      If done right you run the cow-calf pairs past you once at a calm pace and your done.

    • @TheFarmGuy
      @TheFarmGuy  5 років тому +1

      aCycloneSteve I figured that’s kinda what you were going to say. It’s pretty rare to see that kind of setup here in this part of Texas. I mean I wouldn’t doubt a few have something like that but most don’t. Our cattle usually aren’t gentle enough for something of that sort so we just kind of do it the old fashioned way.

    • @aCycloneSteve
      @aCycloneSteve 5 років тому

      @@TheFarmGuy I can see that you use traditional techniques, I just wonder how much gain is delayed/reduced by those stressful days.
      If you only have a few head it's not a big deal. Loosing 2% on a 100 head herd is real money! :-)

    • @TheFarmGuy
      @TheFarmGuy  5 років тому

      @@aCycloneSteve I really don't think it's much loss at all. I mean it's much better than losing them to black leg or some other virus! When they are turned back out they go straight back to their normal routine.

    I noticed your cows don't have big hip bones sticking out like other cows I see. Is due to the breed? Are these beef cows? Can this kind of cow be dairy cows? Thanks.

    • @TheFarmGuy
      @TheFarmGuy  5 років тому

      ed krumm mainly the breed and part being fat from all the green grass right now! But yes these cows are made to produce beef calves and aren’t ideal for a dairy cow.

    • @TheFarmGuy
      @TheFarmGuy  5 років тому

      keith weedt yeah, you not see the alley in the video? Just in the beginning it’s usually easier because the cows like to come out first so the more cows we get out of the way in the beginning the easier it is sorting in the alley.

    Just my opinion: 1. You have horses already, put them in there a week before working with the cattle to eat the grass down 2. Maybe use the horses so you won't get ran over 3. You need the help to work with you instead of against you. 4. Your dog wasn't helping to much. Again just my opinion!
