I am really really short, like 4'11", if I was like 5'5" , my weight would be fine. Cause I'm so short, it's really hard to maintain my weight. I feel so gross and not confident about my body unless when I get my hair colored then I feel like a queen. I lost 20 pounds when my father died , not by choice, just from depression and grieving and I'm still grieving now. I have been diagnosed with binge eating disorder cause it made me feel so much better after words, then I felt so horrible for even eating. I was really bullied in school from mainly middle school to high school. I was called a dwarf sometimes too... I am having such a hard time feeling confident body wise because I feel super gross and not looking good. I stopped growing when I was 14. Not everyone has that problem, but I did want to tell my story to hopefully put a different outlook on life for anyone who has lost weight and gained it right back and have it just keep fluctuating without trying but it's due to severe anxiety / depression and stress and can be grieving too.

Yeah, I feel like I may have an eating disorder even though I haven't been tested. Eating in front of others terrifies me and I don't like to eat a lot since I feel overweight or 'too fat' even though I am underweight by quite a bit which sucks :/

I'm a personal trainer, and some of my most motivated, strong-willed clients are fat people. The people least likely to stick with training, regardless of body type, are those with strictly aesthetic goals, because that's an incredibly discouraging place to approach from as visible changes take time. They should be a side-effect, not a central goal. All this to say, I wouldn't be surprised if in instances where fat people are "less motivated", it's because they've been shamed into taking action by a culture of fatphobia (might make a video about this, tbh.)
As always, thank you for your insight and kindness within it.

@Dale Im pretty sure he implied that but in words not as crude as you put it. Being obese is bad of course but what is considered "fat" a lot of the time doesn't neccicarily mean you are not healthy. So on the very lower end of what society considers fat isnt a bad thing, you can be "fat" and still have a moderate diet and be healthy.

    • @That80sGuy1972
      @That80sGuy1972 3 роки тому

@Dale The toxic side of the USA's obesity epidemic, like them, is oft-ignored (or demonized) because it can be spun by its opposition as hate-mongering. If you address obesity as a bad health issue without being really careful about it, you can get flamed, hated, even banned. But if you post anything with the word "acceptance", you are treated with kid gloves and given literally every benefit of the doubt before you are even reviewed for an offense. Here, in the USA, two of the biggest catalysts inflaming our obesity epidemic are mobility scooters and fat-acceptance culture bypassing every health anything on everything relative to health on top of the wave of perceived privilege on every issue.

One of my mom's favorite things to do growing up was call me into her room, hold up a pair of my jeans, and tell me things like, " this is unacceptable. No one's going to love you unless you lose weight". Important to note, I wasn't even what one could consider fat. I had a tiny bit of pudge. But, since I wasn't skinny as she thought I should be, she thought it was okay to do that. Led to me having a serious eating disorder that I'm still fighting, that almost killed me at one point because I lost so much. These things have consequences. Glad report that I'm back at a healthy weight, now, married to a wonderful man who's constantly telling me how gorgeous I am and offering to fight my brain when those thoughts come up. No matter what anybody else tells you, you're beautiful no matter what you look like, how much you weigh. You're gorgeous, just the way you are. Whether they're fat and healthy or fat and unhealthy, they are human beings and deserve basic human decency. Also, someone else's health is none of your damn business! (not directed at you op!) Like imagine if you had a broken leg and random strangers were not only giving you unsolicited advice on how to fix it, but also calling you stupid for breaking it, lazy for using crutches and a burden on society for going to the hospital. That would be immediately recognized as completely insane and extremely rude, but somehow it's generally considered "acceptable" to treat people that way because of their weight.

Those are the people who can have a little bit of extra fat on the outside while still being healthy. For obese people, they all have visceral fat as well, lowering their lifespan and also putting stress on their joints. But if someone is just slightly chubby, it's hard to say from the outside whether someone has a lot of visceral fat or not (and therefore if the person is healthy). One more reason why it's stupid to hate on people for their body weight. I also gained some weight within my last relationship and after the breakup, when I was at the bottom of my depression. Slowly working my way out of this by dieting and working out a lot and I can just say: It's fucking worth it! I feel happier than ever before! But this is everyone's own decision. For years, lots of people have tried to get me to do sports... It always failed, because I had no intrinsic motivation. As a kid, my family bullied and abused me for being overweight. Even when I was in sports, not fat, and just a more muscular build. They'd literally come up to me and tell me to "suck it in, everyone can see how fat you are." Because of this, I, at first, comfort ate because my mental health was so bad. But as I gained weight, I started having flashbacks of the abuse which lead to me not eating for a while. It became an obsession and I was diagnosed with anorexia. I lost about 50 lbs in about 2 months because I never ate or even drank much and would burn calories whenever I had the chance. I was hospitalized because I didn't eat for so long that my heart nearly gave out.
Once I was underweight, the same family that abused me for being overweight then tried to abuse me for being underweight. That shows me that at least some of the people who treat others like this do so out of jealousy and insecurity. They're insecure of their own bodies and get jealous of those who aren't insecure, despite being perceived by that person as "overweight, less desirable, ugly, etc."
I'm in recovery now and am no longer underweight, but the effects of my eating disorder on my mind and body are most likely permanent, or at least long lasting.
Please never feel like you have to do what I and many others have done. All I want for anyone is for them to do their best to be as healthy as they can manage. Forget about how you look and just focus on taking care of yourself. Everyone has limitations and I don't want anyone to force themselves past those limits for the sake of pleasing others and conforming to unrealistic standards.

And like you said, even if it IS related to their weight (supposedly, but this is where health promoting behavior comes in as opposed to focusing on weight loss), it doesn't matter, they still deserve help. Our healthcare system is trash. Doctors prescribe diets to people in larger bodies, but they would treat someone who lives in a thinner body for an eating disorder if they did that same thing. Are you worried someone will think it's healthy to be 419lb if you don't remind them it isn't? People know being fat is not great for your health. Most people don't choose to be fat, there are circumstances often beyond their control, like trauma or health issues or environmental or financial factors. There may be a small percent of people who do want to get fat but that's.. negligible. The point is, most of these people they were harassing WEREN'T EVEN FAT. I’m not sure what the old textbook says but it’s for my physical activity and health course so there’s probably some messed up stuff from 2003 in there

I’m also really tall and I grew tall at a young age so when people would be talking about weight my height and muscle mass made me almost twice the weight of my friends. I was healthy. I wish I could go back to that. Now I’m unhealthy and underweight. And yet anyone I mention it to tells me their jealous and they ‘wish they were as skinny’ as me. It hurts.

I have experienced weight discrimination multiple times throughout my life, that eventually even led to me developing a severe eating disorder. Both situations I'm going to mention are related to a chronic illness I have and how people don't take me seriously purely based on my weight. The first one was very traumatic in regards to my self-esteem as a teenager..
When I was 13 years old I was only just diagnosed with my thyroid disease, I likely had it since I was around 11 years old, in those 2 years I had gained a lot of weight because of it and was overweight. This disease in combination with another disease I was suffering from at the time made it that I wasn't able to attend school on a regular basis. On top of that came all the bullying, my instable home life and the fact that I have ADHD though this wasn't known at the time.
In my country there are consequences for kids that miss school, there is a local civil servant that is assigned to make sure kids go to school. This woman judged me and my family from the start, she refused to believe that I wasn't able to go to school due to disease and eventually send me to court (so I could be punished for not attending school). My parents brought all my medical files and the judge read her report on me. In her report she stated: "She is too fat and lazy to go to school" and never made mention of my illnesses. The case thankfully got thrown out and the judge gave her a slap on the wrist. But that little line in her report stayed with me for years.
The second time happened when I was just turning 18 and was applying for disability benefits, I had dropped out of school because of physical and mental illness and found I was unable to work like normal. The person handling my case told me I seemed like a 'lovely capable young lady' and mentioned that 'being too fat to work' is not a reason to be on disability, he didn't look over my medical files and dismissed my request instantly. This man judged my level of disability and (in)ability to work solely on my appearance and character rather than my medical history.
Obviously all of this greatly affected how I've been functioning up until now, I'm still unable to work and I'm on benefits now with at least an exemption due to my illness (something not recognized by the other department).
I suffered from severe bulimia starting at around age 20 and have been recovering since about 3 years ago (I'm turning 28).
People don't realize how much weight stigma and discrimination ACTUALLY can affect your life.

I don't know if you've seen the new torture device that was used for "research" and approved, in New Zealand. Also tw, for anyone that searches it. When I saw it, I had a panic attack. So yeah, all of those thoughts of "it's literally better to be sick, have an ED, destroy your mental health and body health, than to simply have fat" is very alive and thriving in medical communities. I always dread going to the doctor for anything because I know whatever I have, whether it's a cold or a broken finger, they will blame it on my weight, they will form their opinion the moment they set eyes on me and never investigate any further. It's funny how no doctor just assumes a skinny person has an ED or takes dangerous medicine to look like that without even talking to them, but all of them assume you have ED and are lazy and out of control and so on, before you even introduce yourself if you are fat. Also there are things that are even more horrendous, like literal entire countries that still reject immigrants and punish your health insurance based on BMI (which has already been largely disproved as measure of health anyway). Also to anyone still reading, I'd tell you to go watch Maddie Dragsbaek here on YT, if you want to learn more about fatphobia, and how to love yourself, among other things.

I was diagnosed with diabetes more than a year ago but only began to receive proper care because it was assumed that I was a type 2 diabetic. Turns out I’m a type 1 diabetic and I legit almost died before I finally sought help. The doctors kept telling me to eat better and then my diabetes would get better but I legit could only keep my sugars low by having an EXTREME low carb diet. I thought it was my fault and I have mental issues, okay. When I was initially diagnosed I was in the hospital for mental issues. I felt like it was something wrong with me. Eventually I became depressed, for other reasons but my perceived failure with my diet did contribute, and ended up eating how I wanted. Some days not at all, other days- a lot. And when I went to a different doctor cause it felt like I was on my death bed- she ordered a test which showed that I am a type 1 diabetic. It pisses me off that I didn’t receive proper care for a YEAR because the doctors that initially diagnosed me made assumptions on my diagnosis because of my weight. Cause literally, whenever I would talk about my diet with the doctors before my current one- they didn’t believe me when I told them my diet and had a general air of like- looking down on me for not doing better. It was a horrible experience.

When I was in *5th Grade* a guy walked up to me and said “How do you become your weight? Do you just eat Taco Bell everyday?” Mind you, I was in *5th Grade*, after that people started to slowly make fun of me, with the insults mostly being about me “only eating McDonald’s” or about how I was “unhealthy” and that I had diabetes. At that time I was a child, I didn’t know that they were wrong, so eventually I started eating less, luckily I never developed an eating disorder (mostly because my parents would make me eat and I was a child) but that doesn’t mean it’s ok. Thank you, Samantha.
I went through puberty at 9-10 years old. I was a 10 year old kid who was 5'2" and wearing a bra, wandering about with hips and getting told "nice legs" by ADULT MEN. I got my first job at 15 and was harassed by co-workers and hit on by ADULT MALE customers. And then I was groomed and abused by a 28-year-old man. So at 16--these were the geocities days--I had the thought: nobody pays attention to fat women. Nobody likes fat women. So I started to put on weight.
The problem is, I have PCOS. So I could put the weight on really easily, but I couldn't get rid of it just by trying to eat more veggies and fewer cookies and get some exercise in. This eventually lead me to *starving myself*. I finally lost weight. I was being praised for it, of course, including by doctors, and they didn't really pay attention to the fact that at best I was eating 500 calories a day. I was losing weight; that's what mattered.
Throughout my 20s, I starved myself and abused laxatives. Any time I would lose weight, people treated me better. But I was still carrying 20 extra pounds, and any time I would see a doctor, they would blame my problems on my weight, including *all the symptoms of PCOS that I had*.
At 32, I found a new doctor. I cried in his office about the PCOS symptoms. He ran zero tests, not even an ultrasound. He just started treating me it, which helped. But by then, the damage done by a decade of eating disorders.
Anyhow, I'm gonna end on this: by treating me like shit for being overweight, you're not gonna make me magically skinny. You're just gonna make me bake and eat more cookies. No matter how much you hate me for taking up a little bit of extra space in the world--trust me, I hate me even more. I will never not hate myself for having a big butt and flabby arms and a round tummy. I know it makes me grotesque and unlovable and horrible. *I know.* I know you hate me. *I hate me more than you ever possibly could.*
(I do not, however, hate any other overweight people, and if you're happy, you should be happy, and nobody should treat you like garbage. I wish I could just make it so everyone treated me like some sort of monster and left the rest of y'all the heck alone.)
