PASTA GRAMMAR NEWS ALERT! My mom just dropped a bomb on me: a side of the family we knew very little about is actually Italian. She tracked down the info of my ancestor who emigrated from Naples, which is where Eva and I happen to be heading. Time to find my roots!
The only problem is that we need to finish our Christmas shopping first, and Naples during the holidays can be... a little intense.
    🎄 Buon Natale, guys! 🎄

We hope you all have wonderful holidays, we're certainly looking forward to enjoying Christmas in Dasà. A guy I worked with recently showed up with some hot peppers. They didn’t look like jalapeños or Asian chilies 🌶️ so I asked him. He said they were Italian hot peppers that he grew himself.
So I surprised him with my knowledge of Italian hot peppers by telling him they were Calabrian. He said “I’m Calabrian! How’d you know that?”
So I told him about your channel 😂

Dr. Florida Man I've had the same sort of experience. I had a customer one time with slightly different Italian-sounding accent. I asked him where he was from. Kinda from the northwest of Italy. Liguria? "Not quite -- that's next door. How do you know about that?" Pasta Grammar.
You know, that's what makes this channel so great. All the other channels that deal with Italian food or "Italian" food treat Italian cuisine as all the same. I find it really helpful to know about the regional differences. The only problem is that, when I hear Americans talking about "Italian" food, I'm often confused. Then I realize they don't know what they're talking about, and I keep my mouth shut. That way, everybody is happy.

I did the DNA test last year and found out my Great Grandfather was Italian from Molise. I enjoyed your video about the area, the best! In fact I saw a video on Calabrian-Greek culture. Very fascinating.
By the way , if you noticed , there were bagpipers toward the end.

I did a DNA test through Ancestry and it showed I had DNA across the Mediterranean... until I found no records south of France. Most of the records show my ancestors were displaced Vikings living in Scotland, and England, with a smattering of German. When the records didn't match my DNA... suddenly the swath around the Mediterranean disappeared from their records.
I was heartbroken. My dad had an olive complexion, huge nose, chocolate brown eyes, and curly black hair. Towards the end of his life, he began to suspect that the woman who raised him, was NOT his mother, but his grandmother. His oldest sister was 16 years older than him. He visited this sister in hospice and told her his suspicsions and she neither confirmed, nor denied them. She was okay if he wanted to think that. I lost my dad almost 30 years ago, and the DNA was supposed to give me more info on him.
I later did a DNA test through CRI Genetics; the man who created this, won a Nobel prize for his work. CRI found my dad's lineage. Most likely his family immigrated to the US after the Civil War... from Italy. I'm 1/4th Italian. Since we have no clue the name of my dad's father, I can't trace any records. CRI filled in the swath of DNA across the Mediterranean all the way to India, Southern China and Japan. My historic and romantic side likes to think I had an Italian ancestor who was an explorer or trader, because they found South American DNA, also.

The fact that your great, great grandfather came from Italy in 1899 isn’t that strange and wasn’t that long ago - when talking about family history. My paternal grandfather came to USA from Sicily in 1897 (dob 1873). I remember him well. I’m a young 68. I’ve been to Sicily and visited the house he was raised in and have met extended family. And yes, the welcome has always been warm and caring.

My DNA shows that I am 45% Italian, but my wife after 10 yrs still gives me a hard time. You’re right about Italian hospitality, they can’t do enough for you. So my little bit of Italy here was my aunt Louisa, the first war bride in our city who hailed from Rome. She was my Italian connection and I miss her so much. But through Eva, I’ve recaptured that great feeling of being a proud Italian and learning the best way to prepare Italian meals. I’ve made my own ricotta and pasta for raviolis, Italian bread and antipasto. Fritters with anchovies are next along with pizzelles and pignoli cookies. Thank God I’m Italian. Buon Natale!!

I found out that I have an Italian ancestor a few years back. Obviously an Italian for some reason ended up in the north of Norway and became one of my ancestors. I was told by my late uncle who researched and found this, but he couldn’t remember the details and had given the papers to my cousin. I should ask him for a copy… It’s quite exciting, because I know that at least one Italian boat went down by the coast up north, with survivors where some settled there - which has had me wondering if one of them may be my ancestor… My uncle researched it because my grandfather spent quite a long time in German prison suspected of maybe being of Jewish origin and this scared my uncle and he wanted to know for sure if it was the case or not. Finally he found that the reason for the olive skin, black hair etc amongst many in my family, must be because of the Italian. ☺️🤗 💓🎄💓

This is a great video because it taps into a really interesting idea of what nationality and heritage really mean. I am the son of a Sicilian immigrant and grandson of Calabrian ones. I grew up in Massachusetts and for all intents and purposes, it was as close to growing up Italian as you can get without being in Italy. I never truly felt American there. Now I live in Italy after traveling here dozens of times since the 80s and guess what... It turns out I was never Italian anyway even though I have Italian citizenship. Eva was jokingly dismissive of your claim to be Italian now but really they feel this way here. I realize now that since I only shared some superficial Italian cultural norms and habits, without growing up here you aren't able to live in a shared cultural experience and be a real Italian. However, it doesn't really matter at the end of the day how we define ourselves. Just live the way that makes you happy and call yourself whatever you want to!

I wouldn't worry about what they think. Europeans are dismissive and rather snobbish about DNA. Many of them have no clue about their ancestry nor do they want to know the truth. I was born in Napoli, all my recent ancestor are from southern Italy, so to my family in Italy, we are Italian. End of discussion. However, I recently took two DNA tests. Yes, I am from Italy, but I also have significant Greek and Middle Eastern ancestry too. Also some Spanish and Portuguese along with a small amount of East Asian. The East Asian is a head scratcher. Where in the heck did that come from??? Probably will never know. I have another friend from Germany who took one. Turns out 95% of his ancestry is not German but is from Slavic Eastern European countries. He never knew that. Growing up, he was born in Germany, his parents were born in Germany. He thought he was 100% German. I will agree from a social experience, you need to have grown up in a culture to truly understand it. Even in the U.S. there are so many regional cultures that are different from each other. Ethnic too. I am sure that with you growing up in an Italian-American culture you have American friends that simply cannot fully understand that culture because they are not Italian-Americans. Like you said, just live the way that makes you the happiest. 🙂
