Several years ago when I was in my late 50’s I wore a pair of gray canvas Vans to a family barbecue. The shoes were (I thought) very understated and minimal. A cousin in her twenties looks at me, looks at my sneakers and says, “Well, they’re not TOO young for you.” So now whenever I wear them, I make a point of how youthful I’m feeling that day.

Good choices. If you don’t mind a few extra comments, I live in St. Louis, where the weather is notoriously extreme, so, a comfort tip for your American viewers. Leather passes heat. If you wear leather soles on a hot summer sidewalk your feet will be slowly broiled, and correspondingly, on a winter sidewalk they’ll turn into icicles. In addition ice or slush in leather soles can send you into the emergency room with broken bones.
I plan on buying chukkas in a few weeks from Thursday boots, in dark olive. Just the thing for khakis or jeans.

It was a real day for sneakers today. I went into a nearby town for essentials and popped into a charity shop. There was a pair of brown calf leather sneakers from Oliver Sweeney for £12 and a pair of navy blue suede Zegna Sport trainers for £9. Both pairs have minimal branding, with the only logos being underneath the sole. They are perfect for day to day use when walking around, smart enough to not bring an outfit down but casual enough to not draw too much attention. It's good living near posh people with too much money!

Lots of mens style sources will recommend loafers and boat shoes for summer. But like you I prefer a more conservatively constructed shoe, even if made of canvas!

    Great stuff, Ash, as usual.
As mentioned here, I like a deck shoe for some informal occasions, but also have a blue suede wingtip brogue and tan desert Chukka boot that are emerging in the warmer weather.
BUT, you are now responsible for me desiring another 3 or 4 pairs of summer foot apparel.
Mrs markywellsboy is not going to be pleased!

Sir, I just *roared* with laughter. Life is too short to see men's feet.... I am inclined to agree haha. Many thanks, good day.
Oh actually one other thing... I don't know if you know the old emoticon they call oh-seven but it represents a head and arm, and is a tidy analogue for salute over text.

Excellent and informative as always! But the glaring omission for me was the classic boat shoe. I recommend Sebago dockside’s or Sperry topsider gold cup…both great quality shoes.

My thoughts on summer gentlemen's shoes:
    Formal
    - A brown suede shoe, as Ash mentioned.
    - White bucks. Great, casual summer shoes.
    - Spectators in brown and white, or black and white.
    Casual
    - Loafers are good casual shoes, as they have less material.
    - Rather than trainers for casual shoes, consider boat shoes, moccasins, or Espadrilles.
I don't fully agree on dress boots for summer shoes. The extra material means more layering, and more heat. It probably won't make a huge difference, but personally, I'd stick with dress shoes.

Black and white spectators or correspondents can be rather tricky to work with, either as brogues or loafers. My favourite spectators are brown but with a cream or light coloured canvas, or brown and navy suede. Cheaney make some very nice models called their "Edwin", some are even partly woven

I live in either Clark’s desert boots, in suede across various colours (original & best imho) and/or white trainers (Adidas Stan smiths) I also have the Vans skater shoe as you show but at almost 40 myself I’d say, honestly, they are best left to the younger fellas 👍 Loafers/driver shoes plus a sporty/running trainer also good additions I’d say.

  • @davejw1950

Ah the white leather shoe. I bought my first pair of Adidas Stan Smiths way back in the early 1970's when I was playing tennis. Loved those shoes because they were leather instead of canvas so they were very cool and classy. So last year I was browsing thru an Adidas outlet store and lo and behold, there was a real leather Stan Smith in my size. Needless to say I grabbed the box and payed the extravagant price of $40 and took them to my vehicle and put them on immediately. They still are cool and classy and real leather not the vegan leather.

Clark's desert boots were really cheap for years then skyrocketed in price. Clark's went from shoes you wore for school (and got mocked for) to a high end brand. Not sure what happened. 🤔

I purchased a pair of suede full brogues in light beige/yellow but my favorite are my Grey leather woven Carminas. With a summer suite/jacket attire an eye catcher.
I always wanted spectators but the difficulty of polishing them kept me away from buying some.

Ash, I must agree the boat shoe is a very good choice I would say in leather or in canvas. Chukka Boots of course are my go to as well as loafers. I personally am not a fan of the leather trainers but if taken care of can give a sharp look. Just don't like seeing guys with dirty trainers with blue jeans pooling around at the bottom of their shoe. I recently got a pair of suede brogues and love them. By the way I really like the pocket square in the waistcoat it's a sharp look very stylish. Cheers Ron

I have a near identical pair of suede brogues with red laces - they wear great with a summer shirt. I've also got chukka boots and some canvas shoes which I wear sparingly and try to keep prestine.
The only other item in my arsenal is a pair of blue suede loafers, though I only wear them on a few days of the year; in the UK climate I'm not sure they're worth the investment.
I've not yet bought leather trainers, but they are definitely a fashion trend and some of the premium minimalist designs look versatile.

Another excellent and timely video, Ash. Instead of Vans I have a plain black pair of inexpensive canvas deck shoes ('Vty') and a pair of navy Sperry's both very comfortable but casual. I can upgrade the casual level with leather Sperry's. I haven't plucked up the courage to get a pair of plain white canvas shoes or as we would have called them 'gutties' (I'm sure you're familiar with the term as we are of a similar age and background) but being a big Steve McQueen fan they would have to be the 'Superga' brand. Final option a pair of 'Loake' desert boots. I did find what I felt was as near to the colour of desert boots worn by McQueen in the movie Bullitt made by 'Kebo' (colour 'whiskey') but alas cannot find them again in my size (42). I really liked the colour of the 'Jadd' desert boots (tobacco) that you featured in a previous video and the brogues are a classic. Thanks again. I hope you had a good break away.

I have to admit, in summer when not working I am generally in chinos and a pair of walking shoes, but that's a side effect of my lifestyle.
I've managed to get the linen suits out now, so pressing leather loafers into service and leather soled shoes. As winter comes back I'll transition into dainite.

A great selection Ash! My four summer choices would have to be a pair each of dark brown suede penny loafers, black calf tassel loafers, colour 8 cordovan full strap loafers and white minimal sneakers. Obviously loafer heavy, but summer is a long season here in Sydney… Keep up the great content, and I’m looking forward to the full shoe collection video!

I would also include BRAIDED shoes and BOAT shoes, as they are lightweight enough but include an air of formality sneakers do not possess.
And as for desert boots I would recommend a company called JADD shoes - for the simple reason that they are made in the UK and not in India like Clarks.

I think suede derbies are quite versitile as you can dress them up or down. I'm not keen on all white leather trainers, as they look a bt too youthfull for me. I find the retro runner type of trainer is more comfortable than the tennis shoe type. I'm not really sure about the smart trainer thing, to my mind trainers are casual. I have noticed though that if you look at the marks and spencer chino pictures they are mostley wearing white minimal trainers. I think off white suede looks a bit more stylish. Espadrilles in canvas are quite comfy for those odd days when it gets hot in the uk. I've got two leather soled chukkas in tan and navy from loake and the soles do keep your feet cool in the summer. I also have a pair of Clarks craftsmen goodyear welted brouges in beige suede. I have too much really.

Excellent selections Ash! My personal favorites are loafers and Canvas shoes. Not really a Boat shoe fan but it's personal preference. I could also wear my San born Cap Toe oxfords as well which do feature some broguing. I'm looking to add a suede derby and a Wingtip in the future. Looking forward to the next video thanks again.

I would add one more kind of shoes, namely espadrilles, but not ordinary ones which look too informal but espadrilles with two eyelets and made of neutral coloured canvas or suede. They look great with chinos or shorts but they are very light and easy in maintenance. To some extend you can consider them as the lightweight version of desert boots :-)

    Here we disagree.
    Look at all those recommendations...
    Little narrow effeminate shoes.
A man's foot needs to be strong, and strong for our lifetime.
That's not going to be the case by binding the foot, to deform it's growth and shape.
The toes are meant to be the widest part of the foot.
Anything else and you are disabling the foots movement and mobility.
Do it long enough and you deform the shape of the foot.
