- You'd be forgiven if you thought McIntosh audio was the same brand as computers sold by Apple. But they’re two distinctly different companies. In this video I explore the history of the audio brand and reveal an interesting story about Steve Jobs confronting the company.
Topics and timestamps covered in the video:
0:00 Introduction
0:07 McIntosh’s old fashioned look

0:45 The early days of hi-fi
0:55 McIntosh: Expensive, but worth it?

1:48 McIntosh’s timeless styling
2:30 The Porsche of audio brands?
2:49 Macintosh vs McIntosh, an interesting story

There was also an issue with Apple computers and the Beatles "Apple" record label. At the time it was decided that the were not competing industries. However with the development of multimedia in the coming years it became somewhat blurred.
Thanks for adding to the discussion.
I used to work for a McIntosh dealer. If you were to bring those to their factory in Binghamton at some point, there is a very good chance they would bring them up to spec at no charge. They used to have clinics where they would do that back in the 80's.
Looking forward too this series. Thanks
My pleasure. Thanks for tuning in.
Very glad to have you back! 😀I wonder how things would have gone if Apple had owned their brand first.
It reminds me that I still want to do video about my 1960's Trio-Kenwood equipment. And this one shows me first, how much work needs to be put into it. Oh well, one day...
Thanks so much, Phonatic! I like playing "what-if" historical scenarios in my head, too. I really love the "For All Mankind" series, for example which posits, "What would happen if the Russians got to the moon first?" On Apple TV, by the way. Please do make a video about your Trio equipment. And let us know when it's complete. Starting a UA-cam project seems daunting at first, but you have to start somewhere and I think you'll find it's a rewarding experience. If not, just turn the comments off ;-) Good luck!
...and both could be repaired by Louis Rossmann, since he did studio gear and audio electronics repairs before he moved on to fixing these Apple products.
Congrats on all the gear! Definitely a thing of beauty and a joy for ever.
X-Y scope correlation indicators are mighty cool :)
Thanks!
I had no idea Louis Rossman was into that. Never heard him mention it, but it would seem logical that I'm sure you are not going to make a living just repairing audio gear. He has been on a crusade as of late with right to repair, and had it with the high cost of New York City. Bravo!!
I was able to rebuild my MC2505 after watching the MC2105 video. Not the same amps but importantly it gave me the courage and enough information to safely do the rebuild.
Looking forward to the C22 rebuild. When it comes out I hope to tackle my MX110Z preamp.
Many thanks!
Fantastic. Thank you.
Nice to see you back agin Flux
Thank you!
Nice content as usual. Much love from Kenya
Thank you, my friend!
Great video. Do you repair work.
Thank you! Yes, I do repairs, but only for myself as a hobby. I don’t take in work for a business.
@@FluxCondenser Thank you I appreciate that keep up the amazing work and the videos. I’m trying to find someone that will look at my pioneer sx1250
I would mortgage my eye-teeth for a aesthetically intact C-22.
Hm, well the divorce lawyers may insist it goes on the auction block, so stay tuned ;-)
it's funny you mention not competing with Japanese companies, technically speaking, McIntosh WAS a Japanese company for the better part of 20 years (they were bought by Japanese car audio company Clarion in 1990 till an Italian firm bought them around 2012) and their biggest segment of loyal customers are in fact Japanese customers.
Made and designed in US, recently acquired by a Texas firm.
But yes, thanks for pointing out that detail, which is certainly an interesting part of the story I neglected to mention.
I’ve noticed a lot of minty quality old Mcintoshes on eBay tend to come out of Japan. They know how to care for equipment versus us Americans who stick them in a dusty garage for 40 years!
You speak very strangely with an inflection at the end of most sentences but great content regardless, love the quality old bits of kit
Ha! And your grammar ain’t much better ;-)
