Yeah its a huge different in reception between CN beta for Lingyang and the global release for Lycaon.
Lingyang got really tarnished way before the game is released
Lingyang and lycaon are probably on the opposite sides of the spectrum on how a furry is implemented
I mean, if you do it right, no one cares that much. Plus, characters specifically like Von are usually more accepted since bipedal canine/ wolf characters are more commonly seen in media as a whole than characters like LingYang.

Have you actually looked at the designs of the two characters? Furry or not, Lycaeon is 1000x cooler and more interesting looking than Lingyang's old design.
at least Lycaon managed to break the cycle of mediocre-to-bad ice type character as a starting 5* in a 3d gacha game by being the best unit you can get yourself in the standard banner for ZZZ

Lycaon was the first 5-star I got in that game and, at the time, I wasn't a fan because he felt clunky and awkward. Then I paired him with Soukaku (the blue oni girl) and Corrin (the maid with the chainsaw who can't stop crying) and _holy moly!_
If nothing else, that extra Stun damage is no joke.
@gag8763 at least you have a stronger Ellen. I've lost 1 to Koleda and the 2nd was guaranteed to be Ellen. The worst part is from the standard banner, I got Nekomata, The Restrained(Lycaon's W engine) and Fusion Compiler(Grace's W engine). I cry myself to sleep every night knowing I am missing so much. I mean, the W engine for Lycaon means I would be able to get his max potential when I get him but I'm still sad that I got Grace's W engine since I don't use anomaly characters.
@@SageRuffin his "clunkiness" is kindda a blessing in disguise, since the end of every one of his charged basics are considered heavy attacks, doing chain attacks after daze is very easy on him and you don't need to wait until the end of the combo to do so

I like how there was a big backlash for his old design only for people praising the full release design to not even play him

There is a huge difference between kit and design.
To be fair the backlash was extremely biased. I believe a larger number of players during the closed beta were from the CN server region.
Ngl I would've chose him as my 5* if he still had his old design. Anthro characters go hard, especially since big companies are so afraid to add diversity even though it would make their game explode in popularity e.g. ZZZ.
The old design mogged the new one so hard it's not even funny. We went from interesting anthro lion to generic twjnk#2837483923884

To clarify I had friend who had researched the game. they told me to pick verina. I ignored them because I am the one true Lingyang supporter I did end up getting verina but i don't use her much honestly, I prefer master Jianxin

Ayyyyyy! Fellow Lingyang main! I pulled him twice in my first 100 pulls so it was fate for me. I will say this forever about any of these gacha games: don’t listen to tier lists. If you invest properly in a character, they will be amazing.

One thing that I feel could've made him way more usable, imagine if his skill was instead a parry / block or got upgraded to one while in the air, and make it not interrupt his current combo. It'd be an interesting way for him to avoid getting juggled himself.

Listen, if theres only one lingyang main in this world then that's me and if there's none left then I've passed. But honestly, it's much more satisfying to not play the meta but just the characters that you like. I love this silly little lion boy and to me his plaustyle is fun and rewarding, especially because it is challenging. I don't want to trivialise the game with overpowered units, i wanna struggle against enemies, i wanna try over and over to succeed. (Maybe i should just go and play a rouge like--)
The Moment I saw Lingyang when I started WuWa, He instantly became one of my favorite characters. He’s just so cute and so cool.

Von Lycaon from ZZZ broke the Ice curse. He's the best standard 5 star with the Ice element in that game.

Despite all the problems, he was my first 5 star and still play him cause Im actually someone who likes his design and unsure if we’ll get a character like him in the future…
It feels like they intended several characters to be played with the gameplan of "break the boss's toughness bar with the rest of your team and then unload character X's full combo while they're stunned." The problem is any DPS can do that, so a DPS that only does that is substandard.

If he could summon larger lion spirit paws for some extra distance with those mid-air punches, he'll be less taxing to play. Also, if his liberation can fill his forte to 100%, his rotations would be more seamless.
i like his design.... i tend to prefer more cutesy characters, but not ones that go so overboard that they're literally children. (example: hu tao, koleda) so i like him
At least he isn't like Clacharo, who can't do damage because his kit was designed for enemies that stay still and don't attack.
Trying to use Calcharo against Jue is so incredibly painful. I mean, tons of characters are painful against him, but Calcharo is just so incredibly frustrating.

Lingyang's character designs is absolutely one of my favorite top 5 (it's because of him and Jinhsi why I installed the game), the only reason why I don't use him is because I don't know how to use him. His kits are too hard for me to understand. Maybe, once I got Zhezhi, I'll definitely try to build him
Wait, people don’t like his current design? Everyone I’ve talked to thinks Ling Yang is adorable, and I agree. He’s like a mix of Gaming and Bennett in my eyes. I thought he well went into waifu over meta, even if he wasn’t the most popular. Makes me sad that he isn’t loved as much as he deserves.
Its too bad too. His JP voice actor's probably my favorite in the entire cast, so I really wanted to use him.

@@RaffoPhantom Lycaon with 175 stun stats can groggy a basic mob with 6 basic charge attack, he's nutty.
Lingyang could probably use the Glacio Dreadmane as the main Echo because it can be used mid-air, but it does put you back on the ground once it's finished. Ideally to be used right after Lingyang's Forte finisher kicks.
Unfortunately, for some reason it has 20s cooldown despite being just an Elite echo.

Because he is tthe only Hoyo ice permanent character who's not from a region inspired by China.
He broke the curse.
The thing about Lingyang against other DPS is that Lingyang is very dependent on his combo and is greedy in on-field time. He's also uncomfortable because he can't quickswap but this is not much of a problem for me. This is what I noticed as a Lingyang main. The only reason why he's pretty mid is because of his damage multipliers but otherwise, he's very fun to play and pretty easy to learn. I also noticed that he's very comfortable to use in mobile and his outro skill damage is crazy. If you're only interested in Meta, then by all means don't pull nor use him unless he gets a significant buff.
Appearance isn’t that big of a deal, Lycaon is also a furry but he is very likable.
The problem is his role in beta is to steal your kill, and when you go up and chat to him, he is like “why are you still here?”
I think Lingyang will get stronger as time goes on, but he won’t be meta ever. I think his biggest weakness is that there isn’t a shielder aside from Jianxin, who is anti synergistic with him because she takes his much needed field time away. If we get a Zhongli type shielder, I’d imagine him to feel much better to play.
Taoqi is also a shielder.
Encore does everything he does but better, simple as that.
Lingyang is better for players who don't have skill issues 😅

While Kuro is more open in buffing their units, like how in PGR they buff existing units via leaps. In wuwa, they might take a more traditional gacha approach of fixing existing units by releasing another unit that might buff the character indirectly or straight up replace him/her with a new unit of similar playstyle. I actually think that wuwa is already embracing the latter approach of fixing units as we've seen with Xiangli Yao literally being Calcharo 2.0(I have a feeling that after Taoqi, Cal will be next in "Why no one plays" xD), because it is more financially beneficial. So with all that said above, there's a fat chance that Lingyang himself will get a buff to his kit, either kuro will release a support or sub-dps that synergizes with him well or straight up release an ice dps unit that replaces the jingle "deez nuts" beast, and we all know the latter will most likely happen xDD

-requires a sizable amount of investment
-difficulty of balancing energy regen and damage

Zhezhi is probably the most dedicated support for lingyang currently, being able to buff ice damage, skill damage and apparently give energy regen
I get that Lingyang's not among the best but I still find him fun to play as especially when exploring and echo farming.

CONVINCING REASON: every 50 i lost it was him he is RS1 rn
Oh yeah, further explanation on why mech abomination and the lingering tunes set is considered the current best set for him currently; Due to the way damage calc works, it’s better to have a good mix of high attack and ele dmg and Lingyang’s ultimate provides additional ele dmg for a duration, meaning gaining additional atk helps him more than additional stacking of ele dmg for him damage wise.
But lingering set just isn't enough or as instant. Especially because if I build a glacial set. I'm building 3 cost atk echoes instead of farming for a specific DMG set
Seeing the title of this video made me stop and laugh because I felt so called out.
I feel a little bad that I haven’t built him, but his play style just isn’t enough for me to stop building my main team (now teams)
They really got to add more echoes, echo set effects, characters, and weapons, which synergize more with his playstyle. Currently the only echo which really synergizes with his midair playstyle is the glacio dreadmane, but even then it lacks the damage and buffs of 4-cost echoes.
OOOF! Poor guy! He was my first 5*, I tried to make him work... His kit is so clunky and not fun at all.
I do feel that Lingyang could fill the role of a "rusher" if that ever becomes a thing. I feel that Jinhsi, while sharing the "enchanced normals" feature, hers is more a buffer for her nuke, so she can't dump her forte immediately, as she is likely to die before she could pull it off. This is worsened by the fact she isn't that mobile in the air. As you had mentioned, anti-interruption should be baked into his kit, providing himself as a sticky DPS which can fight through things apart from hard CC, not necessarily a tank but can take chip damage and heal while in the reserve when your burst or support are doing their things. Effectively, they selling point is their ease of use and existing outside of the DPS rotation system.
This brings into comparison you made with Rover and Danjin, as they focus on being on the field for longer and focusing on their basic attack chains. Rover and Danjin have means to restore their HP on the field, so when given forms of anti interruption (bell turtle or chadwu, etc) they can go ham. Lingyang does have skills which help him shorten his B. Attack chain, but he lacks the same ability to reliably sustain himself on the field that his kit builds him up to be.
I play with Lingyang. He's cute and cool, and once I got used to the combat I was able to carve out a niche for him on my team. ^_^

It sucks because I’m someone who plays and adores Lingyang. I love his design, I love his personality, I love his lore, and I love his play style (in theory), but it downright a struggle to play him most of the time. I want to keep playing him but I feel like I can’t, not optimally at least, and that’s discouraging.
The same thing happened to me with Yangqing too. I have the worst luck possible it seems.
If he was a limited character, not only would his S1 be in his base kit
But I think he'd have an enhanced vibration depletion on his basics, it would allow him to reduce the risks of needing to chase the ennemies.
Additionally a longer uptime on his forte would have been a given

Calcharo number is not terrible but his gameplay is cuz of his BS forte mechanic so people don't play him anymore while Lingyang base number is a joke, he is much weaker than any other DPS on top of being meh to play.
At least Calc look hella badass and when played properly feels pretty good

Actually the only standard character I don't own, and I'm pretty fine with that. Aside from basically breakdance fighting, there's nothing all that cool about him. Fun overworld pick perhaps, but not meta.
Comparing the others:
Verina, #1 character in the game, universal support fits on any team.
Jianxin, worse Verina. Provides shields, which is arguably better than healing, and comes with crowd control, but feels slower and less reliable overall.
Calcharo: Diluc in a Sephiroth cosplay, with Cyno burst. That's basically the whole kit. It's not strictly bad, even post nerf, but it can be incredibly difficult to get the maximum value from him.
Encore: Annoying little kid, who happens to be everything we wanted Klee to be. Arguably competitive with limited 5 stars, but I personally am not a fan of her.

Do you have a document or something for all the places you get your info for? I typically build/play every character in the gacha games I play, and with so many characters/games to look at, most of my "research" is surface level. As you said Lingyang is particularly difficult to find info on and pretty much any of you WNOP's videos I'd love to see what you were to look at. Especially since you've been doing these video's for so long, I'm sure you have better access to these things since you know where to look and know who to ask, at least much more than me.
Ice is an Debuff theme element, yet they can't lend into that theme too much. So the underperform have to find another identity, and evidently, they fail.
But like, yanqing isn't necessarily BAD, his kit just has a ridiculous flaw that, even at launch, was ridiculous to require (can't get hit at all) when the main method of damage was aoe and thus required a second unit (gepard) to even make him kinda playable. And it's not like they couldn't have leaned into it more, aventurine pretty much proved than yanqing just needed a more consistent shielder to support him and now he's nowhere NEAR as bad as launch.

Yanqing not "bad", he are design to be "underperform".
Compare Yanqing with Jingliu, both their kit both have 0 tied to the ice element. You can replace their element and the core mechanic still stay the same. But Jingliu, as a limited SSR, have a much more consistent kit than Yanqing.
@@Koscacio To say a character was designed to "underperform" implies that they were intentionally made bad for no reason. Yanqing is bad for a very specific reason only.
This isn't genshin, where element matters due to reactions. The path is the thing that matters, and his path is Hunt, the single target dps path. His kit has basically just the one flaw of needed to stay untouched.
That said, comparing Yanqing to Jingliu is like comparing Arlan to Acheron in terms of scaling, it's not even kinda close cause they fill different purposes AND acheron is their "herrscher/archon patch" character, who are always head and shoulders above their niche.

I started playing this game with him being one of the first reasons, i even chose his copy over verina, i love him so much an i wish he could be decent, but... it is what it is, at least he is playable and fun to play, and also adorable

I like Lingyang design, like thats my optimistic artistic dancing son, with a sad furry backstory. Like you said he has no good equipment/support. At least in the early game, he was fun to jump around and explore. I did end up getting Jhinsi, so now he's benched till further notice.
I love his design and personality and wish he was just stronger. I got him during the last banner but it will be ages before I can build him, because unfortunately materials are just better invested in stronger characters right now.

I have a Fully Built E2 Lvl80 lingyang on BP weap and as a (or maybe the only main) i love and adore his character and gameplay cause im not all about meta

We dont play lingyang because he is the cursed character in terms of pulling on limited banners

They chickened out of too many things in this game
His design is a reminder of that to me, and due to the lack of ql in his kit and stilted voice lines, I just dislike him.
I hope they'll revisit this concept in the future it sucks that he turned out like this.
Maybe the next T5 Gauntlet weapon will give some of the pump that Lingyang need.

If you ever make ep2, you should make it for calcharo. Specially when xingli yao releases. He's very clunky and nerf before the game releases. Also yinlin can't save him that's why she leaving him soon.

I don't think it is generally an ice character that is bad... In terms of genshin the cryo characters are probably the best dps characters or they where the best dps characters at some point in the game. Ganyu was a nuke, ayaka with her ult was a close to 20k per tick if built right, senhe is the ultimate cryo buffer. So i don't think it's the element that necessarily bad.. Maybe in future we will see better cryo characters
