    Found the same thing when I popped my case open for the SYE. That large snap ring was just floating around in there, but some of the pieces it held in had fallen off and stuck to the filter magnet. That was an interesting find first time around.

    Great video man, one thing I have found while torquing pinion nuts/yokes for crush sleeves is to use a long pipe wrench on the outer side of the yoke and a breaker bar on the nut and put the pipe wrench at your chest and pull the breaker bar/torque wrench toward you. Works good for 14 bolt gear swaps and would have made this super easy for you. Looking forward to a review of what you think of this setup, getting back into the jeep life and have been considering keeping it mild and doing this kit.

    What I did for my yoke nuts was take the case and hold it down (like you did) but then take a huge pipe wrench, and use that to hold the yoke in place. It worked pretty well.

    Matt & all who are watching: use a pipe wrench to hold the T-case yoke while torquing the nut...much easier than straps & vises, etc. Also, you don't have to guess when installing/clocking speed sensor...on the side of the sensor there will be a range for tooth count (e.g. 38-45 teeth, etc.). Count the Speedo gear teeth, then align with the slot on the hold-down piece (see Advanced Adapters' ATE install instructions).

      I used to have a copper blade with a bunch of electrical tape and a portion of a shop towel for the handle. I don't remember where I got it...or where it went, now I think about it. It wasn't an actual nife (TO HELL WITH THE SILENT "K" IN NIFE!) blade made out of copper, it was something like 1.5" X 6" X .1" copper rectangle shaped to desired dimensions via stone wheel and typical shop use.

    If you don’t have snap ring pliers, a couple of flat blade screwdrivers, ranging from glasses to standard size, can be used to carefully phanagle snap rings.

    Matt, next time you need to tighten any type of pinion nut get yourself a big pipe wrench and use it to hold the side of the yoke. For the t-case it's pretty easy. Rear pinion you'll need to do a few 50lb curls to warm up, but it still works great.

    At 30:35 when you turn the yoke and it makes that clunk clunk sound is that normal? I get that sound out on the trail whenever I'm in 4wd and make any sudden stops, as it will rock back and forth and produce that sound. I've pinpointed the sound to exactly what you did by removing my front driveshaft and putting it in 4wd and rocking the front yoke like you just did. Just wondering as I don't want to destroy my transfer case. Its a 2004 Jeep Wrangler rubicon with a 5 speed.

I know that the NP231 in the Durango is a little different, mainly the back half of the housing, the output shaft seems longer, and it doesn't have the speedometer gear on it. Do you know why they say not to spread the RTV sealant?

    • @nolanhickson6730
      @nolanhickson6730 8 років тому

      +ttwilightzzone I've heard a few things: to run a continuous bead, and let the pressure of the bolted piece do the spreading; to spread RTV on one side of the mating surfaces, to ensure that there is RTV across the entire gasket area; or to spread RTV on both sides of the gasket area, to ensure that there are no gaps in the seal, or air pockets that could rupture under pressure, shock, vibration, etc.As far as I'm concerned, I've tried all three, and haven't noticed much difference in any of them. The latter two I mentioned would need some extra care, since air pockets could occur if there was a major void of RTV, or an area where it was much thinner than other areas and the surrounding RTV didn't squish to fill that gap. I have noticed that the latter two do use more RTV, (at least compared to the solid bead method) which could be good or bad, depending on what you're working on.But I think it all comes down to principle more than practice. A clean gasket mating surface and evenly applied RTV (applied in any shape, form, or fashion) should do any job just fine.

    Hi Matt. Nice work, quick question. Can't you accomplish a similar result by gearing your diffs deeper? I geared my XJ with 4.88 revolution gears, and run 35" tires. In 4-low it seems to crawl at a nice pace? Thanks for your input. Really enjoy your videos.

    • @bleepinjeep
      @bleepinjeep  8 років тому +1

      +Brian Waters Yes but 5.13 is about the lowest you can go on the ring and pinion so what happens if you want to go even lower than that? Some people double up T-cases, some people buy an Atlas, or some people install the Tera 4:1 kit. In my crawler I will be running this 4:1 with 5:13''s and 40" tires.

    • @charlesvilleneuve4052
      @charlesvilleneuve4052 8 років тому +1

      Adding a 4:1 t-case also allows you to retain functional high range while having good crawling ability

    • @briana5444
      @briana5444 8 років тому

      Problem with deep gears in your diffs is you're constantly in said low range, with a 4:1 transfer case you can have that 1:1 when you want to cruise on the freeway or drive around town then you can gear down when you'd like to for crawling. Another option is a Klune underdrive although I'm not sure how the prices compare to the Teraflex kit.

      +papa54321 A 3:21 Gear would equal to a 0.143:1 so every 1/7 of a turn the drive shaft turns once. a 3.21 gear would be every 3.21 turns the drive shaft (or wheel[s]) turns once.

      @briana5444 8 років тому

      +BleepinJeep you should check out those Klune underdrives. This Tera low kit runs around 1200 and the Klunes are 1400-1600, you can get another 2.72:1 or 4:1 ratios. Then you have the added benefit of having a variety of low ranges to go with, sorta like stacking transfer cases but it adds minimal length to your drivetrain. You could have 2.72:1, 4:1, or 10.88:1 gear ratios just in the transfer case. Multiply on the diffs, and transmission ratios and you could easily be around 150:1 in your lowest range. Epic stuff.

      If anyone is interested, I called Teraflex today. They are offering an upgrade program for anyone who had a tera low and had issues with it. Send them back the kit, (has to be less than 5 years old) and they will upgrade your TC to an Atlas for $1900. Still alot, but less than the $2500 it is retailing for. And you have to do something, who wants to go back to a stock 231?

      You will only find one in the trash. They were a great idea, but they could not get them to keep from coming apart. Though I'm sure somebody has one that has never given them a bit of trouble.

    So I got a cherokee a couple of months ago and I haven't been able to shift it into 4low. It goes into 4hi and neutral fine but it just won't go into 4low. Do you have any idea what the deal is?

    • @andrewskorupski7003
      @andrewskorupski7003 8 років тому

      It is most likely the shift linkage that needs to be adjusted. Look it up it takes about 10 minutes to do.

    • @henrydillard6217
      @henrydillard6217 8 років тому

      because dex/merc 3 is what is best for the aw4 transmission so he probably had it on hand. my xj had
      fresh atf+4 in the trans when I got it, didn't shift right and slipped some, put dex/merc in it and it fixed it, BTW advance auto and the like tell you to put atf+4 in them but there wrong oe spec is dex/merc.

    If the t-case has never been apart or re-assembled properly, the black 10 mm 12 pt bolts will be where the pry points are. As far as I know their only purpose is to show where it is safe to pry

    • @bleepinjeep

    would I just be better off to but a t-case from a rubicon

    • @CopeManMTNDEW
      @CopeManMTNDEW 7 років тому +4

      sean peterson I was thinking about that too. By the time you get done ordering all parts like the 4:1 kit, sye, and maybe a tera 2 low... you could get a used rubicon tcase out of a tj or jk for a lot cheaper than this 4:1 kit. If you can locate one lol. I can locate a few where im from for around 800 bucks. The tera low kit is like 1200 or something like that. By the time you get done building it.. your stuck with a rebuilt 231 tcase with only 4:1 low range. so its not really worth it in my opinion. Id rather save up for an atlas 4 speed and have more gearing options and independently control the front and rear axles. But thats just me... ill get there one day. The tera low kit would be worth it if it wasnt so costly. Plus it makes you reuse old bearing or have to buy new lol. I dont like that. If you pay that much for one... shouldnt it come with everything to rebuild it? I love how the scorpion crawler turned out... but its screaming for an atlas tcase.

    Great video, but why not just buy a rock-trac, or save just a bit more money and get an atlas? With that kit and the sye , bearings, maybe that detent you are damn near if not over the price for a base atlas.

    No longer available. I grenaded mine... over speed. However it was one of the prototypes. Lasted almost 15 years.
    The rubicon t case slowly killed the demand.
    Had to put in an atlas. (Not upset...just $$$ more than I wanted.)
