    I’d buy a SRW 3500 SO Cummins/68 RFE based on my experience with my current 2500 Cummins. But I think the SO is kind of a waste in the Dually. It’s gonna have a lot lower towing capacity. I guess the upside to getting this package would be you would never over stress the chassis. Ram needs to retune the Aisin to be smoother and quicker when not in tow/haul mode and just get rid of the controversial 68, not that is a really bad trans but just to streamline the choices. Ford didn’t create another trans for their 6.7 HO. But then again the 2500 Maga cab would have like 1200# payload if they did that lol

    Great review! I picked up the exact same truck (+dual alternators and aux switches) couple months ago at 11% under MSRP. Had a ‘24 w/ HO/Aisin on order but based on my needs (towing 15-16,000 5er 6-7 times a year across mainly flatland), the SO/68RFE more than checks all boxes. It will also be my daily and SO, from my experience driving both on multiple occasions, just has better manners unloaded.

    The Powerstroke, Duramax & Cummins are all great engines with their own pros & cons. I personally think 370 hp/850 tq is more than sufficient to tow most any travel trailer or 5th wheel down the road w/ no issues. This is just my opinion, but I like the fact that the 6.7 Cummins still uses a cast iron cylinder head. It just makes sense that it would be more durable than aluminum, especially w/all the compression of a diesel. (19:1 on the SO motor). The I-6 configuration is vastly more popular in commercial trucking vs the V8. Finally, you cant forget the Ol' Reliable Bosch CP3 fuel pump. The newest iteration of the 68RFE is a great tranny for it's intended purpose. It shifts smooth & fast. I also feel its characteristics promote good fuel mileage. It's not "commercial grade" like an Aisin or Allison 1000 6-speed, but is very dependable if properly maintained. However, it's a dinosaur compared to the competition & Ram needs to upgrade to hold their share of the truck market. ZF Powerline, or the rumored 9-speed Allison would both be great choices.

  • @DavidBrown-jt7yi
    @DavidBrown-jt7yi Рік тому +4

    That set up is absolutely great. The only thing I hear about the 68RFE is if you tune your truck, the transmission will fail. If you are just towing and running around town stock, it’s the best Cummins set without a doubt.

    • @supporterofsanity
      @supporterofsanity Рік тому +2

      Nothing is set in stone. My 2017 68 has been deleted and tuned since 2018 with no issues. Closing in on 100k miles. But I have maintained it and don’t mistreat it either. It pulls my trailers and that’s it, no burn outs, drag racing etc. i keep it at a modest power level on my tuner. If I do want to play on a high tune I just roll into the throttle but that just burns through fuel so me being an old fart, cheapo, that has happened a handful of times in 6 years. I realize it’s potentially a weak link and I drive it accordingly. For example I go ahead and downshift when I know I’m coming to a transition in grade to save a shift under heavy throttle, etc. So yeah in stock form this combo should be great!

    • @DavidBrown-jt7yi
      @DavidBrown-jt7yi Рік тому

      @@JB_WhoWork It can definitely be an issue. Most guy with the Aisin I see on UA-cam have a simple 40Hp tow tune especially of they have increased the tire size on the truck. The guy that have the 68RFE seem to like the 150hp tunes and they have ripped the tranny apart inside of 6 months. I think if you take care of a tuned truck and don't race it with stock parts you'll be fine..

    I still don't know why the Lo-Cummins get so much hate. Sure, the power "numbers" may appear to be unimpressive in light of the H.O.s 1075, but I would caution anybody on thinking it is not highly capable. One of the misconceptions on the low-output Cummins is the perceived low-reliability of the 68RFE. However, in 2019 the entire transmission was overhauled, with a completely new valve body design and ring gear set. There is definitely a difference in overall quality. One other issue guys love to tune their Cummins for crazy amounts of torque but fail to upgrade the trans, and the 68 is not suitable for much beyond the 850 it handles.

    • @MonsterTruckingCo.
      @MonsterTruckingCo. Рік тому +1

      The high output is meant for heavy hauling use. The standard is not meant for this and is a light duty usage combination. It is not geared to tow heavy which is why it’s towing numbers, are unimpressive. The standard Cummins/transmission is for someone who want alittle more towing capability with their rv, but not for someone looking to run a trucking company hauling day in and out. The H.O can easily handle 30k daily where as the standard is I believe in the low 20’s.

    • @hellkitty1014
      @hellkitty1014 Рік тому

      @@MonsterTruckingCo. yes. The Aisin is literally a medium-duty transmission, which is nearly bulletproof and is best used in heavy towing/hauling. Most of the complaints are from individuals that only use their HDs for pavement princesses. I own a '20 3500 SRW and it is a beast while under towing. But I can appreciate the more daily-use friendliness of the 850 Cummins.

      @@hellkitty1014 yeah I notice that too. I’ve driven the AISIN and it’s drives no better or worse than any other HD truck… it drives like a truck lol, not an SUV. A lot of people get these and think they drive terrible, when in reality, the truck drives great and they are the ones not accustomed to driving such a vehicle. Whenever I hear complaints about the transmission being cluncky or not smooth, I can’t but automatically feel this person never drove an HD before, because anyone used to driving these vehicles, knows they are not SUV smooth.

      Rather deal with emissions than try to fight low tow figures that come with the Hemi. Plus the Hemi resale value is awful as it’s not a desired combo for people who do more than daily drive them and weekend RV towing. My dealership here won’t even take Hemi duallys. They take Hemi SRW trucks, because most people buying the Hemi in SRW aren’t towing and typically lift or modify them. The commercial side of the dealer doesn’t deal with the gassers unless it’s a special order from a buyer.

It is SO HARD to find gas dually models from any of the Big 3 for the last 5-6 model years, let alone one that isn't an absolute stripped down base unit. On top of that, in some cases the gas 1-ton SRW tows slightly more than the gas 1-ton dually because the extra wheels and flares add weight to a truck that is otherwise identical on gearing and suspension. if someone wants a dually and a tow rating near or just over 20k, they are heavily steered towards diesel.
