So instead of simply letting deshaun go cause he ain't gonna play for you and you're still paying him you let go of a coach who did what he could with what was given to him. Honestly he did better then I expected him to.
Because they’re using Deshaun as leverage. They can still get picks or a very good trade for Deshaun. You can’t trade coaches back they just went ahead and fired him. Texans didn’t want him in the first place, they just wanted to satisfy Deshaun.
Remember two things can be true. David Culley was set up to fail. However he was never going to get a head coaching job. He was in the league for 40+ years, and never sniffed a head coaching job. I am actually happy for him. If you look from Culley perspective he actually won this situation. Nobody blames him in anyway, which is fair. He got a 17 million dollar golden parachute for retirement. This situation is crazy. Houston as an organization sucks. Its starts with ownership then management. But i am glad he got his gold parachute if he chooses to ride out into the sunset
Yeah he’s sounds dumb. If Watson was available he would make sense but he can’t play for any team right now. So how is this mostly his fault when the GM chose to use Cully as a scapegoat
As a Texans fan and someone that lives in Houston and is close to the madness going on here with the team I have to say that Wiley is wrong on his take. I know you all have researchers but they may have fed you some misguided info
Tell me what the best coach ever could have done with that roster? Maybe won two more games? Should have never hired him if that was the case... they set him up to fail...
The coach that should get fired is that disaster in San Diego. Going to waste at least 2 to 3 more years of Herbert's career with that coach at the helm.
But look how long it took Cal McNair to fire Bill O Brien... actually Cal made him GM and OC. Bob McNair is spining in his grave. Cal has no interest in a football team but to fill the stands. And listening to Easterby. He should just sell the team.
Not really. The initial reaction was being upset about the firing due to what resources he had to work with. But then when they assessed the reasoning for the hiring, it wasn’t based on his coaching ability but because they thought it would make Watson happy. Outside of making Watson happy the Texans wouldn’t have hired him so that means it wasn’t a quality hiring in the first place.
That's my guess. Remember, it took 3 more days after Flores was fired by Miami for the Texans to fire Culley. I don't think they fire Culley if Flores wasn't available right now.
This is like that saying goes... "gotta do twice as good to get half as much". Culley did a good job with tough circumstances but didn't do AMAZING therefore he is gone. Same thing with Brian Flores in Miami. Very small margin for error for black coaches in the league.
This segment was well discussed; this is a great example of how two intelligent adults can disagree and still have a productive discussion. That being said, I believe that focusing on the skin color of the coach as a leading point of contention is very short sighted ( Wiley pointed this out) and does not allow the listener to get full context. The NFL as an organization employs players at a minimum salary level of 660k (per google) and 78 percent of them are black. The Texans were most successful during the tenure of Rick Smith as GM and took their drop to the cellar when he had to leave. Ozzie Newsome was a tremendous GM in Baltimore for a long time. We need to use these forums to allow all listeners to benefit from them and not alienate any one in the discussion. I believe Wiley did a great job on this topic, although this topic should include the broader context as I discussed above. In the end, there are several considerations that go into decisions like this; if Wiley is correct, then the Texans should not have placated to Watson in that manner ( I am a Texans fan and live in Houston). Unfortunately, the one that has the gold makes the rules and hopefully after the Bill Obrien debacle as a GM, the organization will take a step back, examine themselves and move forward in a positive way. I for one believe the Texans are and have been 'diverse' for some time; the Dolphins actually fired a head coach with pedigree over obvious politics (idiots). Culley is not a victim, he was paid to do a job (like most of us in the US) and will collect the remainder of the guarantee on his contract (unlike most working people because we do not work under contract). If the goal is to reach the Super Bowl, then Culley is NOT your man; he is respectable and did his job to the best of his ability which is all he can control.
Very good statement you wrote here brother. I too appreciate the open conversation these two were able to have, if we could get this a lot more then we’d be better off.
Normally these guys are spot on but they have no idea what went on in Houston at all. You can tell that they've never seen a Culley press conference or his awful game management. Plus he's got 22 million retirement package.
Deshaun wanted out before we ever even knew who the coach was gonna be. He requested the trade after the GM hire. He was promised some input on the coaching hire as well as the GM hire.. They even hired a search firm that they paid 500k and when the firm came back with 3 qualified candidates (two of them minorities) they were just like oh wait that New England guy is available? Yeah let’s go with him 🤦🏾♂️which is just another in a long sad history of this franchise hiring Patriot castoffs hence the “Some things never change” tweet from Watson. NOBODY wanted Caserio. As a Texans fan it’s extremely frustrating that it appears as if somehow our front office thinks the whole “Patriots South” nickname people sometime use to describe our organization is a compliment. It’s a meme they’re literally insulting our organization yet we keep signing former patriot players, hiring former Bill Belichick assistants, and now even GMs that were formerly apart of their organization. The crying out loud Ryan Mallet and Brian Hoyer used to quarterback this team.. both former Brady backups 😩🤦🏾♂️ and this has been going on for about the last decade now and we’ve only been around for 20 years… literally half of your existence you’ve been employing this strategy and the most you’ve gotten to show for it is a few 2nd round playoff exits. Definition of Insanity man.
Culley was always meant to be a placeholder hire. He was never meant to be the long term solution for us and everyone here knew it. They either want McDaniels or Flores.
Wiley always seems to be the voice of reason. Question for Acho…why don’t they draft more white players? Why is race only brought up for the coaches? Is it no racist for Watson to want a black coach?
Maybe more black former players would want to be head coaches if they didn't see black coaches getting unfairly fired year after year. There's also the nepotism that clearly exists in the league where head coaches hire their friends in prominent positions, who then get the opportunity to go on and be head coaches.
It is reported that the Texans owe him 17 million over the next 3 yrs. One season as head coach for the Texans has earned Culley 22 MILLION. I would not call that a failure. Mr. Culley understood the deal and walked away a winner. Do not feel bad for the guy. Most humans could only dream to make this kind of money.
You keep talking about what Watson wanted. and he caused collateral damage. You have to keep in mind that yes he may have wanted a black coach but not just any black coach. He had someone in the pool not Culley and they said NO, so then when he decided not to play they went out and hired Culley. To me that was a spit in the face. It was obvious they just did it to get Watson to play. So the bottom line he still didn't have a say in the hiring process ,
No QB picks the head coach. Watson's entitlement is a joke. Guy signed a big money extension AFTER the team dumped Hopkins, regretted it after a bad season, and tried to force his way out. Everything else is for show. If you dont want to be there, dont sign the contract.
David Culley was just sacrificial lamb he wins 4 games with this roster with no franchise QB and you fire him this showed me that they wanted him to fail because when you don’t have a first, second, or third round pick how can you build a roster like come on Houston it’s a dumpster fire franchise
Lets not forget the timeline with deshaun wiley they hired a consultancy firm to look for the gm n head coach and they ignored all the options given to them then when they went out n hired caserio deshaun made it out as failures n then he requested the trade so this is alllllll on the trxans stupid ownership keep him out of it
As much as I want a black head coach to succeed, but there certainly is something more than just race that simplifies this decision. The GM and owner may have seen a better coach to hire this year than what they have in Culley., maybe Flores since Caserio is a former Pat as well.
Place blame in it's proper place, there were multiple coaches available that would have satisfied both the requirements of providing the QB with input into the team that he plays for thus creating a sense of ownership, "you work harder for yours than you do for someone else's". The second thing is that the Texans passed over all the best candidates like Leftwich, Solis, Bieniemy and others were virtually passed over and a crony system was further entrenched by the hiring of Nick Cesario into the Texans organization thus ignoring the results of the consulting group of Tony Dungy, Jimmy Johnson, Ron Graves, R.C. Buford and our own Andre Johnson for the single opinion of you know who "Jack the Easter-bunny Easterby". Until the Texans rid themselves of this non-football influenced crony they will be the worst destination for top players, coaches and results.
Tuff being a head coach now today, guys like Brian Flores, Caldwell and others shouldn't been let off . Too much pressure and bad for the owner going from coach to coach changes if things don't work out. Some of these owners/gms don't know nothing about football, if you get the right guy, have to work with him and let him do his thing to turn the franchise around. All about trust and respect between a head coach and the owner 💯
What If Big Ben said he wants to play for a white coach, would that be racist? Or what if what if Luka said he wants to play for a white coach would that be racist. Deshaun is literally saying I don't care who Is the best coach , I only care if their black.. wow 2022..
Wiley: Let's go all the way to the deep in. Acho: Don't let me drown. Translation: Let's talk about something that can be controversial without losing our jobs or at least mine. LOL
I like Acho, but he talks too much sometimes. Culley was definitely qualified for this job and he should've been hired. He was fired bc he was black. Next Caller.

That's a dumb argument. It's always the players. You just take chances on coaches that happen to be running or calling the plays at that time. You don't see them hiring OC's or DC's off of losing teams.
Any black coach that would think about going there needs to have their head checked
Deshaun didn’t want Culley, he wanted the chiefs offensive coordinator Whiley, they hired Culley because it was what the advisor who used to work for the patriots wanted. I remember the stories all off season last year. He completely mischaracterized the situation. In fact Watson demanded a trade after they hired Culley, come on bruh….
Big facts . These guys didn’t do their research
Facts and they lost on those facts
Another great topic handled by the best on TV to me facts 👏
Culley turned lemons into lemonade. Everyone thought they were going 0-17.
With the third string quarterback!!! Culley should get an award for that alone.
right. he coached up a crapy roster
Love the analysis by Wiley and Acho...you 2 guys make this show great
Culley has been coaching for a minute. He was on Andy Reid’s staff as WR coach in the early 2000s.
He should not have fired, i thought he did a wonderful job with he had to work with. I also feel they set DeShawn Watson up.
Please.. not this again
You guys are fighting with one more duo for the top spot on TV, it can go either way every week, you guys are always on your A game and we thank you for making great content. You guys are the pinnacle of your genre. Thanks for giving me spring to watch when football won't do it for me no more...
I'm a Ravens fan 😆 🤣
So instead of simply letting deshaun go cause he ain't gonna play for you and you're still paying him you let go of a coach who did what he could with what was given to him. Honestly he did better then I expected him to.
Because they’re using Deshaun as leverage. They can still get picks or a very good trade for Deshaun. You can’t trade coaches back they just went ahead and fired him. Texans didn’t want him in the first place, they just wanted to satisfy Deshaun.
@@EdgarGomez-nx2dr except they had a whole season to trade him and nobody wanted to trade for him for what they were asking.
Watson to Pittsburgh…if I was Pittsburgh I’d give away 3 first rounds and 2 second round picks.. I’d be all in on deshaun
@@geraldcolvin8668 I think Broncos should be all in on Watson.
Shoot I would of taken that job if I knew I was going to get fired after 1 year but still get 17M 😂
Acho was cooking in his opening arguments 🔥🔥🔥🤫
"Everywhere you go, there you are"
Soul talk
Marcellus Wiley loves toeing the line of bootlicking. Trying to throw blame at D Wat is weak no matter how you tried to package it.
Excellent breakdown gentleman. Thank you
Tell me what the best coach ever could have done with that roster? Maybe won two more games? Should have never hired him if that was the case... they set him up to fail...
At most Belichick would've gotten 1 more win out of that team on football knowledge alone. No other coach would've gotten more done.
The coach that should get fired is that disaster in San Diego. Going to waste at least 2 to 3 more years of Herbert's career with that coach at the helm.
No longer a Texans fan. This the only coach we ever had that I liked.
We got room on the Cowboys Bandwagon bro
Good riddance, bye Felicia🤣🤣
@@37wester that's a good one 😂
Obrien got yalll to the playoffs..lol. and the media made yall turn against him lol
Nice to see Acho having a realization that equity is disingenuous.
But look how long it took Cal McNair to fire Bill O Brien... actually Cal made him GM and OC. Bob McNair is spining in his grave. Cal has no interest in a football team but to fill the stands. And listening to Easterby. He should just sell the team.
"I wouldn't have hired him" ... "I'm mad they fired him" in the same segment. . . Yall Wilding.
Great perspective by Marcellus.
Black coaches gotta stop taking bs coaching jobs.
Thank you for this segment
22 million I'd say bye Felicia too
Culley is better off with a payout and not working for Texans, life is all good y’all
The fact that the Texan’s gm is still there, just baffles me.. sorry to the Texans fans
🗣️THEY JUST GIVE THE WORLD REAL LIFE FACTS OVER FEELINGS😤
You forgot Freddie Kitchens as a one and done coach.
The main reason why Culley was hired in the first place is because NO ONE wanted to coach the Texans!
These two boys keep it real and that is why they are the best all-around sports debate show.
Culley walks off with $22 million in his 70s. That's a pretty good retirement package. 🤷🏿♀️
Could the Texans be trying to hire Brian flores to potentially get deshaun back on the field?
That's my guess. Remember, it took 3 more days after Flores was fired by Miami for the Texans to fire Culley. I don't think they fire Culley if Flores wasn't available right now.
I'm thinking the same. Last year Watson input for coach wasn't heard so maybe they making up for it tis around? 🤔 hope he stays tho. Go Texans
The owner is White the GM is white .. Deshawn is done in Houston ..
@@cB-pu5dn Quick, name an NFL owner that's not white. I'll wait.
@@gavinsgamingworld5979 lol....just a garbage franchise.
As an Atlanta Braves fan and Deshaun Watson fan, I can understand how the city of Houston probably feel’s 🤷🏾♂️
Culley was living in his dream in Houston, and still get paid $4mil for the next 4 years.Culley didn’t feel sorry for himself.
Brian Flores to the Texans. Watson reworks contract. All those women get paid. Watson stays put.
And fire Easterby
The quagmire now for the Texans, is whoever they hire next has to go 10-7 or be one and done. The optics will be atrocious if they do anything else.
Normally these guys are spot on but they have no idea what went on in Houston at all. You can tell that they've never seen a Culley press conference or his awful game management. Plus he's got 22 million retirement package.
Great, fair discussion on this topic. Good job guys!
There’s only one Latino coach
The league needs more coaches from La Raza
Acho be throwing intellectual bars
Culley has 20+ years of experience. He was more than qualified. Acho didn't do his research on this.
Qualifications don't matter as much as he thinks it does. Mike Tomlin wasn't qualified.
Culley was always meant to be a placeholder hire. He was never meant to be the long term solution for us and everyone here knew it. They either want McDaniels or Flores.
DeShawn Watson asked for Eric bienemy..he never said I want any old black coach..he asked for a specific one
I agree but there is another point here. The Texans owner is racist
So the bottom line he still didn't have a say in the hiring process ,
So why did Houston want Culley and not Bienimy?
No QB picks the head coach. Watson's entitlement is a joke.
Guy signed a big money extension AFTER the team dumped Hopkins, regretted it after a bad season, and tried to force his way out. Everything else is for show.
If you dont want to be there, dont sign the contract.
Says to remove race from the conversation while simultaneously pushing race into the conversation 😂
this my new favorite duo
Wiley is awesome and knowledgeable with the shuck and jive!
David Culley was just sacrificial lamb he wins 4 games with this roster with no franchise QB and you fire him this showed me that they wanted him to fail because when you don’t have a first, second, or third round pick how can you build a roster like come on Houston it’s a dumpster fire franchise
jets jaquaurs lions giants those are dumpster fires at least the Texans and dolphins are competitive
@@Drg1304 that’s true they were competitive they won 4 game
Lets not forget the timeline with deshaun wiley they hired a consultancy firm to look for the gm n head coach and they ignored all the options given to them then when they went out n hired caserio deshaun made it out as failures n then he requested the trade so this is alllllll on the trxans stupid ownership keep him out of it
Deshsun could have played for Culley and his teammates
DeShaun Watson did not want it David Culley. He wanted offensive coordinator from the Kansas City Chiefs black and he's a coordinator
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Wiley and Acho be on point!!!
He shouldn’t have taken the job, plain and simple.
As much as I want a black head coach to succeed, but there certainly is something more than just race that simplifies this decision. The GM and owner may have seen a better coach to hire this year than what they have in Culley., maybe Flores since Caserio is a former Pat as well.
Mane ✋ please they are hiring a white coach
Teams aren’t even going to want to give black coaches a chance because of the outcry there could be if they have to fire them
None of this has to do with his race
Lmao Acho said I want my paycheck so let me temper this down
Yeah two walking minstrel shows
Great show
Stay focused Acho .. don’t be the messenger, be the change , you’ll are amazingly gifted! Where’s Joy ? Lol
Black coaches don’t get hired on to promising franchises with good pieces in place they inherit stuff that is dysfunctional and in chaos
What If Big Ben said he wants to play for a white coach, would that be racist? Or what if what if Luka said he wants to play for a white coach would that be racist. Deshaun is literally saying I don't care who Is the best coach , I only care if their black.. wow 2022..
Texans did him a favor. He can retire with that money. Texans franchise is a disaster either way.
💯🔥💯🔥💯
These 2 men are great representatives for males. Uber intelligent
I already knew not to watch this when they brought race into this
No QB. No skill position players. No elite defensive players. I thought 4 wins was 3 games more than what this roster was worth. Let’s just talk-straight. This is a race issue of some sort.
Two grown me talking real issues. Can’t find that on espn.
Did you ever think that the Texans just didn't like his coaching philosophy.
It is possible
How you bring up race and then say leave race out of it 🤦♂️
Race was always a part of it. Deshaun wanted a black HC
