Tonight, we are checking out the Fender Takashi Kato Stratocaster. This is a signature guitar that has ZERO signature markings on it anywhere. It has a really cool dark blue finish with a "thin" nitro giving it an interesting textured feel that is supposed to help the guitar feel, sound and play more like a vintage strat. This is based off his 1965 Fender Stratocaster named "Driftwood." It is kind of like the American Vintage II series guitars that Fender just released in trying to create a vintage spec'd guitar, but keep it as a non-custom shop. However, this one still has some modern enhancements!
Whether you know of his work or not... this is a pretty cool strat!

5:06, It is a 5-Way Blade Switch (it is NOT a toggle switch).
In 1965 the Fender Stratocaster would have used a 3-Way Selector Switch.
Fender did not introduce the 5-Way Selector Switch until 1977.

Yeah but all the players back then would put the blade switch in-between 1-2 and 2-3 to get those tones. so why not use a 5 way instead? Some time tradition isn't as good as modern. Someone should tell Gibson this lol. I have a feeling in 10-15 years there wont be anyone left who really cares about the vintage guitars. They will be too expensive and play like shit compared to what we have today. To each their own. But i would put my mim players plus again this and other vintage spec guitars any day.

I like this one a lot; the blue and creamy colors pair well together, and most of the tones I thought were very awesome classic Strat sounds. And lastly, the unique finish makes it more special, so yeah, this is a big win in my book

  • @hkguitar1984

The texture of the body finish is due in part to both the metallic flake in the paint and the very thin top coat.
Normally a couple of layers of clear lacquer top-coat would be built and wet-sanded/polished back, this is a thin skin finish which omits some of the final finishing process steps.

Nitro finishes are thin by nature, orange peeling is an error, not a feature. Also orange peeling like this implies a few, very thick, coats were sprayed.

They got a few '65 specs spot on- transitional decal, small headstock but thicker than earlier '60's headstocks, about the same thickness as CBS strats. Body contour looks right as well- I think they did a really good job on this one- bridge pickup sounds really good in my opinion.

MIJ baby!! This is lovely - sounds boss too!. I'm more of a tele kind of guy but man...I wish I had one of these. As for the finish, I suspect that nitro is deliberately done. It looks fire! A thinner coat can showcase the grain, possibly allow more resonance and..well...it's a little cheaper to apply. MIJs are always impeccably crafted IMO. Thanks for sharing, bubba!

I love everything about this guitar. The color, the finish, the sound, and the specs. I think the orange peel finish will age really nicely and have a wonderful relic that will make each one look even better with age.

  • @pedromaldonado4803
    @pedromaldonado4803 Рік тому +1

Fender has several different lacquer finishes they use for specific models and production runs. High gloss, flash coat, thin skin, and even relic ready for custom shop guitars.
The orange peel on this guitar is most likely intentionally applied, which by the way is quite challenging to apply as evenly as it is on this guitar.
It looks beautiful and well done.
I’m surprised nothing was mentioned about the beautiful dark rosewood board, cleanliness of the inner cavities, and the absolute overall quality of the craftsmanship.
This guitar captures the true looks and sound of a vintage guitar.
    Outstanding…!

Beautiful looking Strat! Love the color and rosewood fretboard. Really diggin how this one sounds too, quite surprised at that neck pickup too. Even though it's basically like a standard Stratocaster as far as the total options and pick up selections go they are still pretty versatile guitars for what they are, very nice! 👍

Bought one of these a few weeks ago. Build quality is solid, feels very high quality. I was skeptical about the pickups at first but they are actually really nice. Some low output strat pickups sound muddy with too much gain, this one really cut through and stay very defined. Even the bridge pickup is voiced great for rock and metal. The bridge pickup is a bit too twangy and low output at first so I put a fralin baseplate and now its perfect.

I heard you channeling some SRV Trogly, well played. The pups sounded vintage but maybe a little overwound like Texas Specials? Great video, thanks!

My Classiv Vibe 50s has all the aged hardware. Beautiful vintage style strat. It was rather affordable too being a Squire. Although mine does have a humbucker size cutout for SSH, except I would have to drill new holes if I want to get a prewired SSH pickguard, so it's not a drop in upgrade like 60s and 70s (if they had the cutout). So strange seeing mine would be easier to upgrade, even with having to drill new holes, it's easier than routing a new cavity.

If you ever get a chance to or haven't as of yet you've got to check out Baby Saster. She was masked before it was required but it was for privacy. But she can rock a guitar like nobody's business.

Austin, as a future Curator of a Guitar Museum I feel you need to expand your knowledge concerning guitar manufacturing.
The thin-skin finish is just one example of not clearly understanding what you are seeing/feeling.

I just bought a 2004 crafted in Japan 62 reissue on Sunday at the Philadelphia guitar show. It is BETTER than any USA model I have owned. I am not a fan of the truss rod at the bottom of the neck and I am hoping when I need to adjust it I can access it by taking off the pickguard. Otherwise aside from low output pickups (vintage style) I love everything about it

Lovely guitar though, that metallic blue is *chefs kiss* and it sounds pretty damn nice as well. This reminds me of an 80's Elite Strat that I once had with a 3 push button pickup selector, knobs that pushed in I think and some new type of noiseless wafer pickups with no pickup poles in a beautiful blue burst. I didn't like them radius. I preferred a flat fingerboard.

Some folks cant stand MiM Fenders even though they are only 186 miles from the Fullerton plant. Japan is thousands across the ocean but they are putting in what seems like true parts and specs.

That finish looks exactly like a bicycle I spray painted when I was 12. Nice colour, but really not digging the orange peel effect... Lol

Japan strikes again...nice! At least they finally got the 12th fret inlay spacing correct.

If I didn't just get a 2007 FCS '65 Strat, this would definitely be a contender for going after an excellent high end Strat!

Nitro loves to orange peel - only way to properly get rid of it is sand it out. But then you have to build up thicker coats to safely remove the paint. There's ways to mix it and apply it to get far less without leveling it; but you still get _some._ Could be they didn't level it at all, even the clearcoat. Could be they didn't do a clear coat. Could be they didn't level sand the color, so could knock the clear down a bit but not much. A billion options and no way to be sure without getting hands on time with it!

(Should say there's also a billion things that influence orange peel or no orange peel - air pressure, air volume, temperature of air and paint, types of thinners and additives, amount of paint, painting distance, and more. However, if you do it right something like polyurethane will flow out then cure. Nitro is solvent based, so as that evaporates there's just less stuff left over, so it shrinks. The first stage is orange peel, but over decades it becomes sinking into the grain in spite of fillers. And checking. So with other finishes you can avoid or minimize it a lot, nitro it's more a question of how it looks and what you do about it. There's a reason guitar companies tried to move away from it! Well, that and ecological and permits and worker safety. Nitro is a pain, but I still love it.

You always say these guitar should provide vintage specs without being a custom shop. In my eyes they are just reissues. The Fender custom shop is not known for making guitars with a 7.25" radius fretboard and vintage frets.

Great review. I did miss some commentary dealing with the quality of the Rosewood fretboard. It’s probably not Brazilian, but has a fantastic vintage look. I’m sure the tone is affected by the fretboard in a good way. I’d buy the guitar just for the neck!

Fender North America needs to make some of these in various colors. Idc if its usa made or mexico made. Give us choices between poly or nitro for less than $2k.
