Adam's latest machining project is a return to his Mercury spacesuit replica, his very first spacesuit replica project that keeps on getting improvements. Adam just upgraded the gloves on this suit with an amazing custom sewn pair, and turns to machining the distinct wrist coupler rings that connect them to the main suit. It's a painstaking process of turning a large round aluminum bar into hardware that looks right out of NASA's spacesuit shop.

If you went with tubing you would probably have resident freq. going on during your 60deg cuts on the press. It would've been super loud if you went that way. Patience was taught at Covid University. :) This is why our technology is so advance, over-engineering a glove that will never see space.

The camera movement from 29:21on is just marvelous. The first angle feels intimate, immersive, playful, framed by the mill itself. The smooth transition to the slitting saw is like getting to the point and then "BAM!" moving out into the open for the conclusion, with more room, more light. Beautiful long take.

I honestly love Adam's solution to his milling problem. Him modifying an existing tool to do a job it previously couldn't, is in my mind what it means to be a maker. It's the origin of what making is, and it's why I love being a maker and I love watching makers do what it is they do best. Solving problems only they could run into.

What people do not understand is the amount of set-up time it takes for a job like that. Set up includes making hold downs where needed, layout of piece, modifying tools and cutters to do the job. many times after 4 plus hours of set-up time I will make 2 just so I do not have to ever do that set-up again. Some days you work your butt off and never get to the first cut of the work piece. Everyone goes thru that and have the feeling of failure or not getting the job done because we never think that the hard time consuming part is now done since there are no pieces to show yet. You are doing a great job, much better then I could do.

The large number of comments about the music would indicate to some that the music is a distraction from the video. I found it extremely distracting and muted the sound during those periods. The question may be, Is this a video about Adam and his work, or is it about the editor's choice of music? Do people watch because of or despite the music?

We had two ground pins that fitted into the bottom of the vice so that it would lock into the tracks on mill bed. This made it really quick for taking the vice on and off really quick. We also had some other pins that allowed for big plates to squares up against the back rail of the mill bed. Might be something to look at 🤷‍♂️

Adam, a tip for this kind of work. Think to yourself "This is what I do for my own pleasure / enjoyment. This is a process not a race. What I'm doing now is part of the story. Part of the journey. Not something that is slowing me down."
There is no client or prop master tapping their foot for this kind of work, this is for you. Learn to take joy from slowing down, doing things precisely. If it starts to get a bit overwhelming, go watch a Clickspring video. Enjoy the time taken with every stroke of his file to achieve perfection. Then in a calm state of mind, return to the workpiece and enjoy yourself.

"I'm an impatient monkey wearing shoes." This is going into my sig file.
Aslo the get-it-done-itis syndrome of procrastinating because I don't want to start something if I don't THINK have time to make a major accomplishment by the end of the day or chunk of time plages me. Trying to turn on my brain and hold all the things in it like balancing cups and saucers I will need to get into the head space of just before making the first cut - worrying that I will get started, interrupted and all the plates and saucers come crashing down and I have to start stack cups and squaring and shimming and getting this thing just right so I can make that cut and NOT FUCK IT UP after all that effort - it makes the smallest bump a mountain of intimidation.

Adam this was worth the effort.
Next one day build? A misting coolant nozzle assembly for your mill.

Please consider covering the ways of the lathe when you grind on it. Grinding dust is quite abrasive. Even more so when grinding hardened steel (such as that cutter likely was).

Haha - love your ADHD-like energy! Just be careful man! And always have subtitles/captions on your shows. Can't wait until part 2 comes out and see the finished coupler rings!

Most chuck jaws can also be reversed for those trickier chuckings.

Man, my highschools shop had a dividing head that I got to use for some projects, I wish I had one now, such an unbelievably awsome tool. But I can't even afford that let alone a mill

So when the contractor made the real pieces for NASA did they mill them like this or were they cast?

I was thinking the same thing. Or were they cast and finished?

Someone needs to setup a web site for "Tested: Machinist Bingo" cards...
Alternately we need a tested 'builders' forum for people to give feedback and discuss the things that he's doing with the machining videos. These videos are a GREAT learning opportunity, but the buried/random youtube comments on the subject don't seem to actually generate any productive criticism, since they all devolve to "here's what's wrong" vs "adam's a pro, he knows what he's doing". (despite adam himself regularly clarifying that he *doesn't*...)

I was a bit sad to see this was shot before the 6 jaw chuck for the lathe we saw recently. Ah well. Eventually! Wonder if the 6 jaw would have had the same chattering issue?

There is an old machine called a Shaper machine which would have eliminated the use of a slitting saw and would have made a true 60 degree cut all the way to full depth trivial. Abom79 has several videos on their function and use.
