Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Electronics Tool Cart!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 гру 2020
- It's finally time for Adam to rebuild his workshop's electronics tool cart--a project he's put off all year. But starting with his soldering station he built earlier this year, Adam reassembles the cart to carry only the essential electronics gear and materials he knows he'll use most in his projects. It's tool reorganization as both therapy and a step toward efficiency--and highly satisfying on both counts!

When it comes to shop organization I always seem to fall into a trap of favorite tool bias vs most used tools. All to often I have a tool I really like that ends up being put front and center even though it's a tool that rarely gets used.
You got to see this - Boston dynamics ua-cam.com/video/fn3KWM1kuAw/v-deo.html
And the Stanley shop evolves!
I still think my favorite video was when you dumped the bin of machine screws and your mom helped you fix it
its a shame youtube doesnt provide image support id suggest more alien spaceship airlock looking wall panels just bang out about 20 frames of random sci fi walkway 20x 40 scene panels everywhere they might be just grey with strikes of green or red just to inspire extra madness like notepads that ye just pickup and respray if you sold those holy crap anywho ye need something of rick and mortys possibly a ship wreck desk oh and some beat up space junk chairs a shop can never have enough units to hold temporary delicate junk and artifacts
I know its been reiterated multiple times in the comments of other videos but I love this '1 man band' type filming. Moving the camera around himself, making adjustments, saying "ah you can't see that" then moving the camera. It all feels so much more personal, like we are hanging out in the shop for little projects with Adam. I dig it.
I was about to make the same comment. Even when things return to 'normal' I would love to see this type of video occasionally!
Agreed! I firmly believe that content like this, along with my other favorite UA-camrs, is the "reality TV" we were promised some 40 years ago. The first stab at it (Survivor, Big Brother, etc.) missed the point... very little "real" in these shows. Watching real people doing their "thing" is so much more interesting. Adam's enthusiasm is fantastic and infectious, in the best way.
@@grottyboots you should check out "Alone" -- it is Survivor done properly. (aka "Survivorman" times 10)
You are hanging out with him ,he loves this stuff and showing people things .
I feel like whoever edited this got a brand new effects package and was just playing around with all the new features.
And I am ALL about it. I loved it :) had me smiling like a kid infront of their birthday cake.
I got the sense that it was someone else editing it other than the normal crew. The style was totally different as well.
@@ToddTevlin description says editted by Joey!
Or has been watching a whole lot of horror movies lately :p
I was thinking "I hope they're okay. Seems maybe they're letting off some stress."
I've just realized that Adam's entire shop is built on wheels and can be almost completely rearranged at a moments notice
Been moving toward that in my own shop...
I'm waiting for the complete shop rebuild using a garment conveyor he got on e-bay to hang everything from the ceiling and rotate what he needs around to the workbench on demand :-).
I was just wondering if the electronics cart was an airline service trolley.
@@ReverendTed it's either a airplane service cart or a hospital cart they use I'm saying it's from a hospital by the drawers
I don't understand why my favorite videos are Adam organizing his stuff, but it's just so satisfying to watch
The lego sorting was probably my favorite sorting video. That was a big task.
Because Adam.
End.
I don't know either they have been my go to videos
Adam's impromptu "Dad" lesson at the end 🥰
I really prefer this way of the one day builds. Rather than Adam talking with one of the tested guys at the beginning. And all the professional cameras and stuff.
I really like the homemade aspect of these videos now. Please keep them like this!
two minutes in and I'm like Dude! keep the Fluke and put the rest of them away! LOL
Bruh, if this man ever had a garage sale...
I'd get a plane ticket just to go to his garage and spend hundreds of dollars xD
He should have a garage sale. Why in the hell do you need 4 fluke multimeters? I mean no disrespect to Adam, he is a childhood hero of mine, but sometimes I get the impression he's a bit of a hoarder.
I remember the drill press video he did specifically where he replaced the broken chuck on his drill press and could not bring himself to throw it away, and instead, put it on a shelf in the shop.
I get that Adam use to do metal sculptures, and that sort of thing is useful for art as its a beautiful piece of machining, but when you've got literal walls and ceilings and aloft and every nook in cranny contain 5x copies of the same thing, and you haven't made a metal sculpture in awhile, maybe its best to let it go.
In the case of the multimeter, Adam talked about going to a swap and finding a fluke multimeter for like $100 and it being way above the caliber he could afford normally while getting into the hobby. Let some of those go to people who would cherish them the same way, Adam.
@@honkhonk165 You may have a point but considering that he has worked for ILM and it could be that many of these tools could be associated with building something ex: Millennium Falcon, I also would be extremely hesitant to get of anything there.
Dude imagine the estate sale for his workshop
@@josherickson6706 I dont see him like that, rare and valuable give it to the "appropriate" venue but sell no not because he's fabulously rich but I think that's his nature and if he found out about a struggling "builder" I can see him rallying the troops to him that person out.
Up to this point, even with as many of these as I've watched, I had never noted the irony of a drawer with the label "LABELERS" written in silver Sharpie.
Dang, that “torch” is fully torqued!
I need to begin every day just like this.
sitting here with my coffee reading my email in split screen I completely agree!
@@gloriouslyimperfect multitasking damn
Yea I sometimes wonder where he gets the energy from
Love the shop infrastructure builds. Seeing things get organized is soothing.
Isn't it amazing that when our tools are unorganized, we want to use them less? I find it interesting psychology. It's so fun to optimize workflow!
Throw a magnet in the torch holder shelf
@Stefan Work
With a piece of double sided tape and washer. The magnet trick would work.
I feel like everytime you reach for a multi-meter you're gonna knock over the torch.
Its in there pretty sturdy.. thats why he built it to the exact size of the base so theres not a lot of room for it to move
@@gloriouslyimperfect Yeah but what bothers me about that is, that the holder for the torch is directional. you have to put the torch in one specific way and that would drive crazy.
@@EtwasMartin Yeah he should have just used a hole saw to cut a large hole in a piece of plywood. Screw that piece to the cart then the torch just gets dropped in. The bottom of the torch has a lip so it won't fall through.
I was thinking the same torch death per multimeter cords 😆
I'm more curious as to how long it'll be before he burns himself on the freshly put away torch while reaching for something else... This is Adam after all
I love watching One Day Builds, it's relaxing. As a software developer, I can't help notice the parallels between some of the builds (this one in particular) with refactoring a legacy codebase. Much of the feelings and experience is the same.
For example, As time passes by, you observe that the code (in this case the cart) becomes harder and harder to use and to integrate with the work that you need to accomplish until you finally go ahead and refactor the codebase.
Loved that "Dad" analogy, let it be for what it is
This is 5S from lean manufacturing what you're doing. I love that concept and use it all the time. You can see here that Adam is the kind of people who could well have invented such concept.
Joey seems to be having a lot of fun adding creative touches to his edits. I like it and has half expecting the Psycho stabby sounds at one point.
I like that you finished the video with the greatest tool an artist/maker can have, the broom.
It looks like Adam is constantly waging battle with 'Mission Creep'.. 🤣
Adam , Thank you for taking us through all of processes in how you make things and why. Not just I made X and here are the steps to make it. but the insight in how and why you are doing the things and what your thought process is that gets you to the point of finished thing. I feel I have gain a whole new perspective into making
An idea for that back location is a portable bench power supply, like the solder station, that uses standard battery (again like the solder station) that gives easy access to 3v, 5v, 12v on terminals plus USB. So when you need to prototype or validate a portable bench supply in arms reach.
Dog's breakfast/dinner (UK) = bad…
Dog's bollocks (UK) = good…
The English language is a very strange (but wonderful) thing.
Thanks Adam, for all your great content in this peculiar year. Let's hope for a much better 2021, or at least the post-20th January bit.
Lady Liberty carries her Torch, Adam's cart carries his. Not sure what that symbolises, but I like it.
Ah jeeze, thats an odd shaped torch.
I'd be afraid I'd confuse it with my Reddi Whip.
see 17:14 in the video
The torch would be used for heat scrink tubing to seal wires after soldering. Also they have bits that allow you to use it for the actual soldering as well. Most of the torches for electronic/hobby work look like his as does mine.
The electronics cabinet looked vaguely like an airline beverage cart. Empty real estate can offer parking space for a spare Snapple bottle or spools of wire.
Wishing you and your family a blessed new year filled with peace, prosperity, good health and happiness. Thanks Adam.
I had to pause the video to google "mission creep" and now I've learned a new expression! And now it's back to the video 😅
Thank you, Happy New Year 🍾🥳🥂🌎 💥
"I watch my process." I love this perspective. When you're doing something and that process no longer serves you, change it so it does.
Thanks for sharing your personal shop time and organization with us. I find that it helps to inspire me to keep things organized.
Adam, I recently got a job making custom high end cabinets, and am absolutely in love with the 23g pin nailer! I saw your love for it and never thought the use of it over a brad nailer, but it’s is my go to for tight spots and discrete nailing. Thanks for the tool tip!
"I'm going to shape it"
**sparks** that's one finishing nail... **sparks** two finishing nails... 😆
"Wait, why is the wood... sparking? Ohhhhhh"
I want Adam's labeling handwriting as a font. ☺️
I love Joey's editing
Amazing editing job, Joey! My wife loved the psycho chords on the cuts. The music was perfect too!
Adam's charm is his pure joy in letting his idiosyncrasies fly.
thanks for the vids!! happynew year to you sir!
He put the biggest fluke multi meter off to the side and said I dont need this one on the cart... and then half hour later its back on top of the cart with its very own spot.. Ha.. I do that too.. Too funny!.. Great content... love this!
Happy New year to you and your family. Hope the new year brings prosperity and inspiration to you.
That is a thing of beauty. It’s amazing how a personalized work apparatus can enhance the quality and joy of building.
I love watching the evolution of this cart.
Merry Holidays! The gift of knowledge from a wonderful guy. Thanks for all you do!
Merry Holidays to you, Nick P!
I've never heard of the term "Mission Creep".
Interesting when you put a word to something you can recall multiple instances of being plagued with. xD
Adam, you certainly know how to make use of space, and how to make those of us that don't have the means for those things enjoy watching you use them. Thank you for keeping us mostly sane during this trying time
As an australian, i can comfirm, "that cart is a dog's breakfast mate." However we would use at least 2 F bombs, and 1 "bloody"
"bloody hell, that f'n cart is a dog's breakfast mate"... I could only find one reasonable spot for the f bomb... But I am also an American so I don't speak crikey very well... At all.
"bloody hell, that f'n cart is a f'n dog's breakfast mate" - coming from rural NSW Australia
It’s also a British term, with just 1 f*bomb.
@@emilyhunter666 We use it in Canada too. Must be a commonwealth thing. I'd throw in an f bomb and then apologize for the foul language. ;)
We use that, and "dog's dinner" in the UK too. :)
The wire hanging off the side of your soldering station is definitely going to get snagged when you're rolling it around at some point
This bothers me EVERY time I see the soldering station
I've been enjoying your workshop fix its been helping me sort mine out
This new editing that has been going on is awesome thank you crew
Sooo satisfying !!
I feel like this video is a glimpse of an alternate reality where adam made his youtube channel solo. His constant finicking with the camera is precious.
As a young builder today I appreciate the biome you've created with your channel for me to escape to on this day of days.
My workshop needs a thing like that. Great video Adam 👍
I reckon this bloke could organise a chook raffle in a pub. Nice build Adam
I find it key , when decluttering, is the end frame of mind
Once it's complete, take a moment and release the need to fill that spot
It's like you clear a spot but don't eliminate the mental vacuum(we), that is working subconsciously to suck something into that spot.
Thought was, Adam needed to tape off the top section with tape....KEEP SPACE CLEAR😃
It was a great decision to zoom in on that end shot. He looked so proud. I love it 💙
Keep it savage. We love you.
What a wonderfull man you are Adam. What i like the most in all your project it's your personality. What a good model you are, creative, joyfull, intelligent, funny, generous... I vote for Adam! Long life to you!-)
I just spent 20 mins watching Adam tidy up a mess and tbh I'm not really sure what else I was expecting.
It pained me when I saw he was gonna shelve the 87 and keep the 115 on the cart, I was so happy to see the 87 on the cart at the end. Not that you really need more than 1 DMM, unless you don’t trust it, in which case get it serviced because a Fluke 87 will last more than a lifetime if you treat it right.
Both descriptions of the chaos would actually work well here
I wish I could be half that organized. Great work as always Adam.
its so reassuring to know I can be a slob because there are people like you in the world. I love seeing how the other half lives. Good video thanks and happy new year
Still waiting in that one day build in which Adam builds a machine to catch that doorbell poltergeist.
I need a modular system to my workspace as well. The terms "I might need that" or "that could be useful" have led to a mess or lost time trying to find something. Thanks for the inspiration Adam!
Congrats, Adam, on allowing the real-estate to remain available to speak to you at a later date. You have inspired me to edit my screwdrivers.
Amazing Job! I want to see your shop. Thumb up! Cheer!
I like that you started the table saw and then walked away to answer the door 😂😂
My favourite addition to my workshop, labels, I now label every single thing
I've been looking for ideas for something like this!!!
These video edits keep getting better each time. You guys are a well oiled machine. Also love the shop infrastructure stuff.
What do you give the man who literally has every tool in existence.......Warehouse 13.
Nice Radio Shack sticker on your original cart! Ha blast from the past.
This just might have actually been a real One Day Build! The elusive Holy Grail of ODB videos!
i like the use of the aircraft galley cart. i need to get one to go with the smart cart i made into a welding cart.
this is me every week trying to find the perfect place for my modeling tools so everything will be convenient and easy to reach when I'm working on a project haha
Adam the tool cart savage. Back at it again
I was confused until that last label went on. 😂
Infrastructure 1 day builds are the best.
We definitely need more tool cart one day builds
When Adam started sorting the box of transformers and cords I just thought of that Marc Maron Joke about saving the world with a box full of wires. haha
At 10:42 I started humming Mr. Rogers’ “This is my Home”. Adam has an odd intersection of fans; I wonder if anyone else had the same thought 😁
I need to build myself one of these man. All I have is a electronics toolbox and damn. This looks awesome
I haven't yet finished the video and i'm already loving the editing !!
Love these videos
That space at the rear is perfect for a bench power supply unit....now I need to empty out my 'electronics box' and sort through it all
I seem to recall Adam making the original cart in a much earlier One Day Build.
Yes. Yes he did.
My wife has one of them torches in her bottom drawer 😳🤣. Is it me or does it look like something else.
What brand is it? Can't find it anywhere.
I love it when u talk about your tools:( u always have tools I’ve never seen n there I go ordering them
Thats strange, My Girlfriend has a torch that looks exactly like that one. She stores it in much the same way also, Very cool!
where did she get it? I like the aesthetic of it, it's very retro futurism
Sometimes just clearing the clutter is all u need. Great job 👏
Adam: "What all do I need?"
Hoarder: "You are asking some stupid questions!"
Adam: "Improvise, adapt, overcome"
sitting here watching you organize your shop when i should be organizing my own shop!
I’ve been wondering about the electrical stuff in your shop, as we always get in depth looks at the mechanical side.
Love the use of an airline service trolley! Intrigued as to where you got it? Lots of options for shelves 👍
I can't watch this while organising my shop/garage...I will have to come back to this later.
Adam’s architectural model of a modernistic house that also happens to hold tools :-)
I've been paying attention, just 3D printed a pen holder to stop my pens falling off the desk and to make them easier to get at. Also stops other junk falling off.
Did you design it yourself?
@@IneptOrange Yeah I just made it up in Fusion, nothing fancy and it could be done with a block of wood and some drills but it works! 3D printing was just easier for me.
Thanks for the Dad advice! I don't have children but i do have an attic maker shop that's perpetually under construction... "not what I want it to be, but see it for what it is"
An Australian's 2 cents on "a dog's breakfast"; my brother got ridiculously drunk at a friend's house many years ago and while attempting to sleep on the couch he had to run to the back door (he only just made it by the way) and projectile vomited all over the back veranda. He thought "I'll hose it down in the morning" and went to sleep. When he went out to clean up the mess, the veranda was spotless thanks to the mate's Labrador.
So yeah, dog's breakfast.
