- PGA Tour 2K23 reviewed on PlayStation 4 by Matt Paprocki. Also available on PlayStation 4, Xbox, and PC.
Even after a year off, PGA Tour 2K23 returns offering minimal progress from its preceding, prior-generation edition. A new three-click swing is an unforgiving mess, it’s somehow worse at emulating the look and feel of televised golf, and the few spurts of personality that’ve been layered on can’t counter developer HB Studios’ penchant for preserving pro golf’s elitism above all, or the apparent terror of breaking from that form. At least PGA Tour 2K23 can define itself through the properly challenging golf sim at its heart and the barebones career mode that stands all but alone in its menus.

This might be one of the worst reviews of a game I’ve ever heard… it’s basically his opinion that golf is for the elite and he doesn’t like the menu music 😂
Golf is for the elite (more than any other sport in america), and the menu music is pretty bad.
But these should not be high priorities for the review, and they definitely seem to be.

Have you played the game? Even the tutorial is nearly identical to the tutorial from TK21. The game really is maddening.
Well the Tiger woods series from over 15 years ago were more fun to play. Yeah there were some superhuman swings possible but it was fun.

So the game achieves what it wanted to, but not what the reviewer was expecting... You cannot go watch Saving Private Ryan and complain that it was nothing like a romantic comedy and totally missed an opportunity. C'mon man.

This game is terrible. The $100 edition is barely worth $30. There is literally nothing to keep you playing.
Except maybe the thousands of courses that will be created over its lifetime for you to play with your friends over some beers

Utterly ridiculous review: the very worst of IGN. The reviewer criticises a golf sim for being a golf sim and for using an appropriate soundtrack and challenging mechanics. Presumably he wanted an arcade game with pop music, gimmicky mini games and some fps gunplay inbetween holes. The fact that the putt preview is on throughout the clips says everything. This guy doesn't like golf. As a golf game for golf fans, it's brilliant.

Because he (along with many) is a dude who has a preconceived notion about golf and simply can't let it go. If people actually think Golf is this super elitist sport, they've clearly never even remotely step foot on a golf course. Maybe private ones are but 99.9% of people aren't going to play on those courses anyway. Long story short, golf isn't what people want it to be just so they can complain about politics

Not sure what he expected but this is a solid game just like in the past. The courses are gorgeous, it's difficult and there's an awesome course creator. 8/10
Btw, if you actually did some research you'd see they're adding Pebble Beach, Torrey Pines and Spyglass Hill as free DLC. So much for those "second tier courses". 🙄

Not really. Real golf is walk, explore the course, manage it along with golfhouse, find the ball. They're still keeping teleportation between a shot and another with static crowd around. Lame.

You can tell that this was written by someone who wouldn't bother to play this for more than a day, not to mention his complaint about course diversity and quality when there is literally thousand's of top quality custom user made courses you can access, which includes incredibly accurate replicas of all the courses he said you could not play, (of which he only mentioned briefly). Plus his mention of this being an elitist and pompous game is quite silly, when most of the cult following these games have are just gamer's who like a decent golf sim, not middle class Englishmen with their clubs permanently placed in the back of their BMW M5's

well by default it gets a leg up on 2k21 since you can actually PLAY as a PRO tour golfer. maybe a 7 out of 10 is a bit more fair
Well.. guess my dream about seeing a game like the old "Tiger Woods PGA tour" game for the PS2 wont ever happen..
Where when you unlock clubs and stuff like a glove gave you stats!
And most important of all.. a campaign that played out over several years! And if you didn't qualify you'd have to get better untill the next year!

Please explain why you consider golf to be elitist? Let’s be honest 2K23 is just a missed opportunity. It should have been so much better then the last iteration but they’ve failed on almost every level. My hope was for a much improved course designer but even that is basically the same.

I'm leaning towards waiting for EA to come out in spring because I'm more familiar with there product. Also, there are three quick sling is a whole lot better than what I've seen on this game which looks like a complete cluster $#-&
EA lost the licensing rights to 2k a few years ago

IGN are not interested unless it has EA in front of it.
Forgive me for being blunt but you're clearly not a golf fan. There's a reason why The Golf Club and it's iterations have been overwhelmingly successful. The reason is that golf fans like to ...... shocker incoming .... play golf. We want the sim to be as accurate as possible and don't what some ridiculous arcade action forced upon us. There are plenty of other faux "golf" games that can fulfill that need.
Golf fans don't need and have never needed the manufactured excitement, action and hype that have taken over every other sport (both online and real life). We enjoy the game itself.
My criticism of this game is that it's too amateurish and yet this reviewer seems angry that it's not Mario Golf. Bizarre.
