So I was having a constant problem with my spacebar sticking. I tried blowing in it, pushing it hard, etc. I went through all the suggestions I read about and nothing worked. But then...I put my lips on the spacebar and inhaled for a couple of seconds. It worked!!!! I guess I managed to suck out the dust/wtv else was jamming the spacebar. :DDDD Just a suggestion for anyone else having the same problem :) P.S. I posted this comment on another video and it has helped a few people already, so give this a shot :)
Hello, (FIX STEP BY STEP) For whoever is still struggling to reattach their MacBook Pro space bar after removal, I have been successful in removing my spacebar to clear out any dust/crumbs that were causing it to "stick" and successfully reattaching it to my keyboard with just manageable dullness/condition. Although this video doesn't show how to completely put it back together or fix it, it does put you on the right track. Follow along the video and proceed to remove the spacebar from the keyboard, after removing the spacebar, proceed to remove the white butterfly mechanism from the spacebar (pretty easy just detach the metal bars from the notches using a pin or thumb tack). Instead of throwing away the white butterfly mechanism after removing it from the spacebar (as shown in the video), try to force each white nozzle of the butterfly mechanism back into the clear sections using your pin or thumb tack. Don't worry if you notice little pieces of the clear sections have fractured as long as you don't completely shatter/break off the entire thing. I used a push/press method of "stretching"/moving the plastic using a thumb tack with a considerable amount of pressure just enough to shove the nozzles back into the clear sections After reattaching the white butterfly part of the spacebar to the keyboard, just snap the remaining part of the spacebar back onto the white butterfly mechanism by reattaching the metal bar into the fitting notches. Honestly, just take your time and don't stress out too much and if anybody has any questions or concerns lmk.
You're a saint. 50% of the white nozzles on my spacebar were busted off. Put the rest of em where they were supposed to go & it's holding up ok for now. Got me through writing this sentence, anyway. Works better than my former tape-based solution, that's for sure.
I just fixed my spacebar, and I'd like to add that you should definitely lift up the transparent clips from the butterfly mechanism rather than the other way around (just be careful not to damage the glue strips holding the clips in place, they kind of make sure that the whole key sticks). This way you won't risk breaking the "nozzles" at all. After cleaning out crumbs or whatever, put the butterfly mechanism back first and THEN the transparent clips! No risk of damaging "nozzles" this way :) hope this will help someone
ACTUAL FIX - DON'T THROW AWAY the white piece. Around the 1:25-1:30 mark he's pointing to little 1mm white pins which are what keep the butterfly mechanism attached to the computer. There are 8 in total, but some likely snapped off when you removed the keyboard. See ua-cam.com/video/nhMyJwhCJ0M/v-deo.html around 1:55/1:56 to get a clear picture of white piece and all its little pins. There are actually 16 you can see but only 8 connect the key. These pins plug into the illuminated clear plate (in this video they look almost blueish) but in order to do that you'll have to either remove those clear plates or at least lift them in order to get the pins in place. Once the white pins are in place, you're ready to put the black spacebar on. Look at the under side of the space bar to see the little clips and it will be obvious how to put it in place on top of the white piece. I broke 6 out of the 8 white pins and my space bar still works great. Someone else mentioned the human vacuum technique, I'd recommend that first before all of this.
you're a god send dude, i followed all the step but I'm having trouble clipping the top part in. I'm using as little force as i can but I don't wanna break it
I added one more thing. Get a bandaid, cut the sticky sides and stick them to both sides of the space bar (will cover half of the command keys on each side). Dispose the middle piece of the bandaid
Me too! I just bought some high tack, low profile, electronics repair tape and fastened it to the two clear brackets. I had to first peel off the preexisting tape and clean it up a bit, but it holds it down to the housing and it’s good as new!
I fixed my keyboard for free in 2 mins. Just took a shop vacuum to the thing. Vacuumed the whole keyboard and then closed the laptop and vacuumed all the ports and the vents in the back. Works fine now.
Thank you for this video! I spent the last hour trying to figure out how to get the damn inset thing in there. Watched this and now at least my laptop is functional until I can get it repaired!
Thanks! People think it's stupid, but I've been using my laptop this way for a while and I haven't had time to take it in so it's saved me a lot of time and money. Hopefully some day I can take it in for repairs.
Lol i did the exact same thing as you, ended up taking the clear parts off, put it back together, and now i have to press very hard to get the spacebar to work at all. Lots of ppl on the internet were saying to not try to clean your keyboard yourself - just pay Apple $700 to do it. relieved to see someone else who thinks it's bs.
I actually found bending it a tiny bit, just like having a curve in it downward seemed to help a little bit then I could tap it really fast and get a space. Check my description though, apple actually finally did a recall and now will replace it for free if it's most modern models. Good luck!!
@@nickjunes Question: Do you think they'll still replace it for free even though I messed with it and broke part of the white butterfly piece & part of the black facade?
What's clickbait, the part where I show you how to still use your macbook, the part where I tell people how to get it repaired or the part where I make millions of dollars?
I managed to fix it myself. If the small 'teeth' in that middle layer is not broken off there is a way to hook it back on by starting on the left or the right side and sliding it over to get the little hooks in on the other side and done. I was lucky I guess.
Thank you for this tip!! It does work without the butterfly wings. How did you end up merging the key to the keyboard afterall? I am looking for some type of adhesive or cushion to keep the space bar key from moving around everywhere.
A few months later and mine is still sitting loosely. I'm afraid any glue will just make it harder for apple to repair eventually. I don't want to fork over $400 and my laptop for 2 weeks so I'm just hoping they come out with a recall. It sucks when if floats off to the left or right. You have to get used to hitting it pretty much in the exact center. If you figure something out please let me know.
I just added a tiny piece of double sided tape on both sides (in the middle of the two sort of rectangle looking white pieces on the key) so it's not permanent and can be removed, but at least it stays on and I don't have to worry about losing it. That way it allows me to use I'd say the middle third of the key instead of only the very center. You still have to get used to it but it works well for me. Hope that helps..
If I could put up a picture of my spacebar. I am facing the exact issue. I took it to Apple Care too but nothing positive. I have adjusted to press it with index finger and not with my thumbs. Apple cheated!
You have to remove the clear pieces along with the butterfly clip. You have to be careful though cause it's fragile. Use a box cutter to gently pry them up and try to keep the sticky tape on them it came with. You insert the white butterfly clip then you replace the clear parts where they were before. It's actually easy to explain it, but a little harder to actually do it.
@@fe4rlessakabossbaby121 it just helps hold everything in somewhat. I recommend being gentle doing it. The spacebars are the easiest to break and probably the hardest to fix.
@@JordanScanlon well I took it off, and I put back the space key and it just sticks to the keyboard and it won’t go up everytime I press it, I took off the entire thing and now I’m using just the space key
@@fe4rlessakabossbaby121 need to insert the actual butterfly clip then the clear pieces. The tape holds everything. You need to lookup how to clip the actual key.
My spacebar was not working on the right side only. I tried compressed air but the keys fit so tightly that the air didn't get underneath. I was able to fix it by taking a utility knife (razor blade) to lift the spacebar slightly on the right side, just enough to create a tiny gap for the compressed air to do its thing.
I'm saying it's an apple defect and you have to take it into the apple store otherwise if you already broke it like me then you can remove the clips and just lay it inside to get it working again until you have time to give apple your computer.
You can check to see if your model is on the list. Yes they did take it and repair it for free so thanks Apple for that: support.apple.com/keyboard-service-program-for-mac-notebooks
