This actually worked. My space bar had been giving me fits for the past month and I was to the point where I was considering taking it to an Apple store to get it fixed. Thankfully I looked on UA-cam and found this video. It’s a pretty easy fix and I appreciate you taking the time to make this video. Awesome stuff.

Hi Dave - i have a similar issue with my left Shift key, BUT when I go into System Report - Hardware - Controller menu there is no hardware version listed at all! just the words "This computer doesn’t contain any Controller devices." so now what do i do? [you can see how intermittent my shift key is behaving by lack of capitals etc].
Worked like a charm for me! I have a 2017 MacBook Pro, and when I went into hardware - controllers it said "This computer doesn’t contain any Controller devices." I tried it pressing option, control, and shift while holding power key for 10 seconds and it worked. My "I" key was sticking like crazy!! Feels like a brand new keyboard now! I will have to get some compressed air to maintain the cleanliness under the keys but this was a god send! Thank you!
Hey can you share your long term personal review of MBP 2017, I am gonna buy a used one for $360 it's in still nice condition and battery health above 85. I am worried about the butterfly keys in it, are they faulty and really inconsistent?

Yup. Perfect! Thank you. The space bar was driving me bonkers. Now is perfect.
This is not the fix. It will get worse. Its a hardware problem and at some point you will need service. Look at my sentence. It double spaced again and I just did the SMC reset...

I have exactly the same problem with my MacbookPro, the space bar shift hardly ever works its very frustrating. I have followed your video instructions and just want to make sure that my understanding is correct.
Its a Macbook Pro that I bought about 3 years ago with an Apple M1 Pro chip, so must I use the second option for that then - Control, Option, Shift, then power, hold all for 10 seconds, then release, then power again, is that correct? Regards

I've always wondered if there's any kind of software to fix this, it doesnt seem very hard to create a program, which detects when the key failed, and correct it. This method is even easier
Absolutely. I just don’t know why the operating system doesn’t detect it needs this reset and do it on its own 🤷♂️

Woke up this morning to this problem on my mac book pro. Just wanted to say THANKS! This tip saved me alot of time and probably money for such a simple fix.

My system would not restart at all by pressing the button. I had to do exactly his way so it depends.

I took out my E key the other day and tried to clean it. Worked for a day, then it started sticking again. This worked! Thank you!
Thank you so much!!! I had been dealing with this for about an hour until I stumbled upon you video. I had to do the buttons and power my Mac off and was soooooo thankful that this worked as I was working on an assignment that needed to be turned in before midnight. I have an older MacBook Pro, without the T2 thing you mentioned. When I held the other keys you mentioned with the power button, the screen did not show the Apple logo like your screen did. Did it still reset the SMC?

I never had the chip for my 2019 MacBook Pro. But when I tried to reset, it didn’t work for me.
I found you in a google search and I'M SO HAPPY I DID!!! I have the same T2 controller and it worked perfectly, even without cleaning out with canned air. I've always been worried that that would push dust even further into the works. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I had security chip T1. Big problem with the "h's" and the "b"s being stuck badly. Fix definitely improved things. Not perfect, but much improved. Thanks much.

Wow, this definitely worked! However, I still think there's something 'stuck' under the right side of my spacebar. I can feel that it doesn't depress like it used to. Still, it's SO MUCH BETTER than it was before. Thank you!!!

I started to do what you said to do, but I didn't have a "Controller" in my hardware column. I have a MacBook Air that is probably 2zero15. I received it in December of 2zero16. Please help. Thanks.

@@lanceabaja2735 I brought it to an Apple authorized repair shop. They said don’t try to fix it yourself, you can’t, use the left side of the space bar because it’s going to cost $386 to fix and it’s not worth it.

Hey Dave, I've macbook air, and the keyboard of mine is working crazy. My delete key is working like microsoft delete key. It is not backspacing. My arrow keys are not working properly too. When I press up and down key, it scrolls my page like page up and page down. Need your help as I have already formatted my mac several times but no luck.

My lady friend and I drank alcohol about it, and she gave me the same advice I gave her when she was in that position and I became okay with the breakup immediately. But we were really drunk, so she spent the night in my apartment. I only have one bed, so you know what that means: She took the bed and I slept on the couch. But on the couch, I really can't sleep. Something was bothering me. So I tossed and turned for about three hours, then I finally can't take it anymore, I stood up and went straight to my room where she's sleeping. I approached the bed, gently sat on it and I reached for her shoulder to pull her closer to me. She stirred and woke up. She asked what's up. I told her, you know, the first time I saw you, I was watching a video and left it playing to get my self a sandwich then went to the store to get some mayo then I got distracted by life that I forgot to finish the video. She said, you know what, I've been wondering about a weird noise in your night drawer. So we opened that drawer, and lo and behold, there's my phone and this video still has two minutes of play time on it.!

Wait hol up...I thought SMCs are reset using the control, option, shift and the power keys. Not just using the power button. So are they like different types of SMCs for the t2 chip model?

I am facing the same problem as you described. In my case its left shift key. Tried resetting smc but not solved. When use bluetooth or other external keyboard its working fine. Any suggestions?
I tried both of these. I took out my 2 key but it’s still not going through! My 2 key never works and my password uses 2 so I can’t even log in. What do you suggest for me to do?

Hey Dave , my situation is a bit different. I had my MacBook Air on for maybe two days without any activity and left my school app on where I needed to type in stuff for exercise . Now when I’m coming back to it , I can’t seem to close that app nor Ty anything on it . I restarted my computer first .. same issue . I shut down the Air and still same issue I just can’t seem to close it or type anything in it . Help 🙏🏻
15" 2017 MacBook w/ *T1* security chip. Not T2.
Holding Ctrl-Opt-Shift will not allow apple to appear OR disappear when you hold Power.
Apple appears only when keys are released and boot begins.
Holding Power alone gives same result.
In both cases spacebar issue persists.
Any ideas? Rest of keys work fine.
Oddly enough the spacebar is working lots better after a week's use!

Thissss did not work for me with a different version of MacBook Pro. My S key still skipss and iss unreponsive or writes additional "s" letters. I have to press hard to get the s to work or it makes extra letters. But glad it worked for some people. I have an external wireless keyboard and the letter S works fine, so maybe I do need compressed air? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you. :)

The late 2019 model does not have the Butterfly mechanism and is not covered by this program. Any advice? Why is my keyboard still so bad?

is there a way to fix F3 not the fn + f3 because the f3 only works when i long press it.

When is turn it on it on the keypad doest not works. It means I cannot type the password even I did turn it off and back on but every time the keyp bad is not working and as u know I have to type the password once I turn on the laptop because the sensor won't work.. Can u help.

can you close the laptop with the keybord cover on? or you have to remove it everytime??
No it closes with the keyboard cover. It’s a very thin flexible cover. I have noticed that oils from my fingers that stay on the cover transfer to the screen and you see a slight impression on the glass screen. It’s more pronounced than what you might see without the cover..., but it wipes away with water and a paper towel.
Great video, but one question.. it is normal that my MacBook Pro says that has no control? On minute @ it says no control in my MacBook. (MacBook Pro 2017)

It works!!!! My ESC key was not working at all, I thought nothing could be done to fix it but all I had to do was shut down and restart my laptop and the key is back to functioning! Thank you!
