- Shohei Ohtani gave a Porsche to the wife of his new teammate Joe Kelly, who gave up his jersey number for the Dodgers superstar. Ashley Kelly led a social media campaign to recruit Ohtani to the team. abc7.com/shohe...
Cool for Joe and Kelly to do that for the Dodgers, and Shohei appreciated it with a gift.
Agreed. That was really cool giving the number and what a gift!!
Joe and Kelly is the same person.
I've heard that S. O. is a nice guy and prefers to do things like this without the press knowing about it. That would explain him not showing his face during this act of kindness.
Yes, he has been covered a chased by the media since he was 16 year old wunderkind.
Ohtani is a brand ambassador for Porsche. Go look it up. This was a marketing stunt by Porsche. Ohtani didn't pay a dime for that car.
@@kinggremlin4574 that’s a reflection of your own petty imagination. Being a brand ambassador doesn’t give you the right to get a Porche for mom, dad and your buddies for free. Even Ohtani him self doesn’t get gifted a car. They give him a Porche to drive around for free and after a year they give him another new Porche to drive around for free while they take back the previous car.
If porche wanted to do a marketing ploy, they would have their own camera crew to film the delivery. Instead this was a private transaction which was video filmed and uploaded by the Kelly’s privately
@@mirikaku5811 What's it like working for the Porsche marketing team and trying to pretend this is real? I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt that you aren't naive enough to think Ohtani actually paid for this car and then sent some other people to deliver it for him.
It was a gesture of respect, because even before Ohtani signed she convinced Joe to give up his number and played a role in recruiting him as well. So please leave those crude comments for your moms. In Japanese culture respect is important, unlike some of you all
Doesn't mean they ain't banging
SHOUHEI has always said that it doesn't care about uniform numbers.
Japan has an outstanding su*c*de rate and a declining population...
@@ginxgin8056thats why he gifted her a porsche because he didnt ask them to give up the number.
@@eyebeebak facts.
Leave it to the internet to be creepy when all you're doing is returning a favor to show gratitude. This is why you aren't Shohei, and you will never be one :)
Exactly. No one can be a generational baseball talent if they don't return a favor. That's one of the key points made in the Tom Emanski videos. What are you talking about?
People saying giving a Porsche is too much, or saying a billionaire paying for a millionaire’s car isn’t right, etc. don’t seem to understand the underlying human situation.
A jersey number means everything to a player. Besides it functioning like a lucky charm, it symbolizes the fact that he has earned a spot on a ML team, something he has worked so hard and so long for to achieve. It means more than having your own parking space, even more than having your own office, and people don’t just give it up. Having to give your number up to a new coming somebody means that everyone around you including yourself has acknowledged that the newcomer is the bigger dog. It’s at the least a bit humiliating and sure takes a bite off one’s ego. In short, it hurts. That’s why no new coming superstar should take it lightly or for granted.
What Ashley Kelly did was to make the process easier for both her husband and Shohei Ohtani. By cheerfully making a lot of fun out of the situation and by offering the number even before Shohei signed, she showed that it was not a display of losing face or backing down but that it was an exciting gesture of good will and that they were excited about it and enjoying it. It must’ve eased the pain out of Joe for sure.
On the other hand, it made it easier for Ohtani to take the number as well. After all, he didn't even have to ask for it. She avoided making Shohei into this arrogant ego of a monster that took away Joe Kelly’s hard earned rights. And when you consider the fact that seniority means a whole lot more to Japanese athletes than Americans, this gesture of hers took a giant burden off of Shohei’s shoulders. And that’s probably why Shohei responded in the way that he did.
Apparently, just saying thanks wasn’t good enough for Shohei, after all, the Kelly’s did not only give him Joe’s jersey number but they even eased the guilt or awkwardness Shohei would’ve had to go through. Like, if you gave someone your office and if that person responded with just a box of chocolates, would that be satisfying enough at heart? So, I guess Shohei not only wanted to show his gratitude but also the magnitude of it as well. A Porsche symbolizes the owners prestige, so it was an ingeniously fitting thank you back gift to compensate for Joe Kelly’s generous sacrifice of ego.
In any case, it was a beautiful exchange of graceful gesture on both sides, and it would be a whole lot better for us to just appreciate the moment than to find faults in something when there really aren’t any.
well then he should've gifted Joe Kelly a Hummer too. Just gifting the wife is a slight of hand
@@AJ-iu6nw It's reported in Japan that he gave Joe an exquisite watch as well, but I'm still to confirm it from US reports.
Sorry to go Grinch all over your romance novel, but Ohtani is a brand ambassador for Porsche. He didn't pay anything for that car. Porsche came up with the idea as a marketing stunt. This wasn't nearly the deep heartfelt gesture you're trying to make it out to be.
@@kinggremlin4574 I fully regret not being able to entertain you with what you say is a romance novel. I will take at least some comfort in that I entertained you enough to force you to mock me for possibly nothing. I genuinely hope I made you feel really good about yourself and made your day.
BTW, it is speculated by reporters in Japan that the Porsche was actually bought by Ohtani, but at a discount price. I guess he was granted much privilege seeing that he didn't have to wait for his purchase to arrive. What an entitled SOB this guy is to get a gift at a discount price and even skip the line, isn't he?
@@clubeyxander5132 I feel great, thank you. Regardless of whether he paid an irrelevant amount of money, to him, or not for the car, the whole idea was a marketing pitch by Porsche. There was no deeper meaning to this. You got suckered in by a viral marketing tactic.
Guys, Ohtani is really sending a message to women everywhere - "Ladies, this is a sample of what's waiting for you. Think it over"
It's a story full of holiday spirits. Thank you!
I've heard Joe voluntarily gave his # to S. O., he asked Joe what he could buy him in return. Joe said something like, I don't need anything, but my wife wants a Porsche. And, there you have it.
He never said that. He joked my wife is writing a wish list to the media, but in reality he never told Ohtani hi wanted anything in return for the number 17, Kelly said it was an honor to give it to him.
she deserves a CRUISE boat with her name on it...17 will go down in history@@mirikaku5811
Joe is making $8 million with the Dodgers this season and has made over $52 million in his career so far. He can afford a Porsche for his wife.
that's wrong. ohtani has a endorsement deal with porsche, this guy's wife has a decent social media following, and porsche came up with the idea of gifting a porsche b/c it's free marketing for them. ohtani didn't even have to pay a cent.
@@joneandi37 how pathetic imagination you have. Just because you’re brand ambassador you don’t get to gift mom, dad and all your buddies a Porche for free! Even Ohtani dosent get a Porche but is a Porche to drive around for free for a year, then the company will bring a new next year and take back the previous.
If Porche would be marketing they would have brought their own camera crew and filmed it when delivering the car.. Instead it was a private transaction video filmed by Kelly’s privately and uploaded.
Shohei Ohtani, Welcome to the Dodgers! Class act. You will make it easy to root for you! Go Dodgers
I really hope that our youngsters will look up to this good dude and pay less attention to the many "look at me, me" athletes.
Also being cocky, cursing, flipping the birds when they are on the spot lights.
Ohtani: I don't know how to spend my money, I only need to buy dog food...
Yikes.. is this the type of “man” you wanted to become? Your dad must be ashamed.
My son ask santa for dog foods for his dog
After all the campaigning this woman did to bring shohei to the dodgers, I love this lol
That's a smart woman right there. She knew if Ohtani came to the Dodgers, her husband's jersey #17 would be worth a lot more, and she's right.
Great story!
Class!
Very nice of him
It's crazy!! I know it's a kind of habitual deeds for those who have been handed over jersey number, but ALL-NEW PORSCHE!!😵💫
$700 million
@@kinggremlin4574 yeah😗
@@luismiguelmayo Ohtani deferred it. He receives 2 millions per year for next 10 years.
@@knifejail yeah! It's enough for living after paying high CA tax and some donations. And he gains much more from sponcers!
Ohtani… seriously…Can you be more unprecedented?😂
Awesome 👍 👍 👍
Nice. Good guy
I wonder what Miguel Vargas, who wore number 17 on Kelly's jersey until he was traded to the Dodgers midway through the season, thinks
Joe Kelly would get the #99 lmao
👍👍👍❤️
大谷は、やっぱり凄い。こんな事出来ますか?
It's so heartwarming to watch millionaires giving each other incredibly expensive gifts. Really makes you remember what the holidays are about.
GREAT CHRISTMAS GIFT FROM SHOHEI
That looks like Taycan 4S wheels.
That’s Japanese culture shinning thru
Any tax accountants here? Will she have to pay a hefty gift tax (and end up selling it as a result)? Can he write it off somehow?
The Dodgers' moves this offseason are so dramatic that they should be able to win three WS rings in a row. On the other hand, if they couldn't do that, they would be laughed at.
正に神。他のアスリートとは格が違う。
Classy of Joe to do that. But why 99?
He's an Aaron Judge fan.
WILD THANG!
Joe Kelly's new number is #99.
The WILD THANG. 😂
He's trying to hit. 💯
No
I think he did.
Part of the recruitment of Ohtani. Mrs Kelly is really good!
At the end of the day it’s coming out of the pockets of Dodger fans.
No husbands getting mad if their teammates buy them their wives an expensive car,
Pure class on both parties! This is what baseball needs to get more young fans🤓🤓🤓
Now go win a WS or lose to our Yankees in the finals!
Aaron Judge only knows how to carry the Yanks to get swept in the playoffs.
Yankees have one one World Series in 23 years. Not sure how you're so cocky.
@@meltednostrilsbornwithoutn781 Rooting for your team is considered cocky?
Porsche is extreme expensive insane incredible unbelievable.
Payment was deferred
It's not even pocket change for anyone making an estimated $50 million a year from endorsements which doesn't include the $700 million contract he just signed.
He had an amazing career... it's about to crash and burn now. I'm watching his stats closely now.
Marc Brown is behind this suspicious story. : )
Cam Newton was asked to pay $1 million if he wanted his number by his teammate, he just changed his number😂
17 will be retired in history like jackies #....GOAT
Now you know what you're buying Sports Fans!
That's how much it cost to get #17. Out of respect I'll deliver the car.
Must be nice throwing all that money around
Sick. Children starving in the streets. And oh I’m special
she's still wearing number 17 that's not the deal
She wants his baby too🤷♂️🤣
Im Just kidding….
No, im not😆
Great PR MOVE BUT IM STILL PUZZLED OTHANI RECEIVED THAT RECORD BREAKING CONTRACT BUT HE'S RECEIVING POCKET MONEY UNTIL THE END OF HIS CONTRACT. !
You must be new. The dude got 50m+ just from endorsements last year. That’s about to skyrocket even more. He’ll basically get paid the same or more than he would have if he hadn’t deferred
@beckmanchilds756 I don't matter how much he made or makes endorsements I personally would want my yearly salary unless he agreed to save on the Tax.
@@imagine9265small mindset vs strategic mindset. He is investing in winning, deferring the $ will give the Dodger the ability to build a team around him to win. And winning will make him even more popular and long term that will bring way more $ such as endorsement, product and companies that he wants to start, etc...
And it took Fransisco Lindor over a whole season to honor his bet and get Jeff McNeil a bs car.
That’s Fucked Up He Never Bought Troutt Wife a Porsche 🤣💯
She doesn't need it. Trout is rich himself 😀
lol cmon now trout only a few years ago was the highest paid player in all of mlb.
trout never gave him the number shohei wanted either!
Ohtani buying Trout's wife a Porsche would be both insulting and weird.
Joe Kelly previously said he would trade jersey numbers for cars. Unlike Japanese people, there are no Americans who don't ask for something in return.
Joking.
Gangster move
"I don't know if I like you buying my wife a Porsche "
Friends with benefits 😝
he asked the husband for permission first. you can tell the husband knows when he opens the door.
🏎️
Please tell us why we should care?
Shoei making over 1 billion in salary and endorsements and gifting a $100K Porsche is equivalent to a regular person gifting a $1,000 IPhone 14 . Nothing surprising here
Shohei has enough money to buy them a $10M home but that means $100,000 a year in property taxes for something they don't need.
Typical a**hole comment. Find a way to criticize a nice gesture. And by the way, when is the last time you gave somebody a gift worth anywhere near $1000? Yeah, I thought so.
Giving an iPhone is still a pretty damn nice gift lol
He would never notice if a $100,000 was missing from his accounts. This is not an iPhone, most people cannot afford to give $1000 gifts as a thank you. This is the equivalent of a $5 lottery scratch off ticket as a gift.
I would never gift someone $1,000 lol
EAT THE RICH
Oh WoW! So that's his Xmas giving list!? What charaties did he give to???
Does he have to give to a charity???
Why would you want to know which charity he donated too? What would be the purpose? He donated a gloves to every school in Japan.
彼からしてみればクリスマスにスニーカーをプレゼントしたくらいの感覚ではないでしょうか 😇
👀👀
What ?
if that's not a little weird! 🤔
How I can’t buy your wife. BMW?
Why
If I were her, I would sell the car, , and I would buy him back a new updated brain less ridiculed, and more adapted to the new world.
That's awkward
for broke, yes.
