I'm amazed at their ability to hold my attention with some of the premises they commit to. So many times I ask myself, "why?" but keep watching the entire skit. It's a fascinating phenomenon. "This *gesturing to include self* is my piece" is something I consistently reference in my life.
I tell my kids it's more of a commentary on value and commodity than anything else.. like what/who gives something value, and who determines the value of the currency used as exchange. Yes, I am an artist, and yes, my children are tired of hearing about it.
this is especially funny as an art major. contemporary art has become a joke in modern times. i see so many graduating seniors vain attempt to be philosophical and deep, but when you see their actual skill level its astonishing that they even payed the tuition. modern art as it is came about to mock reality and the establishment, and now rich middle class people pay thousands to just restate whats already been said by those who came decades before.... its fun to watch.
+Treading down Primrose path only if you have no talent or drive to succeed in the field. its something someone has to be very smart to succeed in... or very, very stupid and probably a little narcissistic (not to be an ass, i just notice all the "trendy" people tend to have the lowest skill level). i just happen to get super cheap tuition.

yeah, i thank every day that i chose computer engineering. making a really good salary, i still get to pursue art and do whatever the fuck i want with it, and i can even go further and incorporate computers/electroics into whatever i want to do because i have the know how
I went to Dennys and when the waitress brought my oatmeal, she "dropped" it. On my hands. Then a guy in the next booth licked the table. A women across the aisle stood up, (where did she get that glass of wine? It's freaking Dennys, I mean--oh, they do? Okay.) Anyway, she bought me, and the booth, and the remaining oatmeal. For ten thousand dollars. The guy who ate some of the oatmeal said art was meaningless, and he had to go home because his band was rehearsing. The weird thing is, I didn't even order oatmeal. I wanted a bran muffin.
Why did that lady give that weird, creepy laugh in the end, when her son was told not take photos? That's been bothering me for years. Could someone please explain that?
Art imitating the shit that passes for art these day's. I live in Edinburgh, lots of galleries but to be honest you see more interesting things in scrap yards, rubbish dumps etc...
As someone in the SF/Bay Area in the outer circles of the contemporary arts scene, I must say this video is spot on. You must be careful, however, in how you define this 'scene'. I'm sure even my feeble attempt at an explanation will be met by some more 'learned' or 'hoity-toity' art types with disdain or derision, but hey, as the saying goes 'fuck 'em if they can't take a joke'. There was a specific 'Modern Art' era which started, depending upon who you trust the most, somewhere around WW2 (possibly a few years before this) and lasted up until around the 1970's when 'Post-Modernism' came into vogue (or 'vague' :-) !! ). Many art people pronounce it 'MO-dern' but most of the public says 'MOD-ern' (go figure!) The term 'Contemporary' actually means whatever is in style at the time or moment (or whims & fancies of the art gallery dealers, collectors and museum buyers). 'Contemporary' doesn't give a name to a specific era, just what people want and buy at that time. Much like the words 'vintage', which actually means 'of the time or moment', and 'antique', which technically, I believe, means anything over 100 years old. A lot of people will use these terms interchangeably. Now, I'm no art history/major/expert by a long stretch and there are bound to be those out there who might have their own ideas about this. This is just some random minutiae I've picked up from people 'more in the know' than I. Check out some art timelines in different art history books at a bookstore or online to make up your own mind. (Sorry if this sounded like some sort of long winded lecture but I tend to go on and on and become sort of a 'Chatty-Cathy' sometimes when I get on a roll. Thanx for indulging me!)
Thanks for the post, very interesting observations, always good to learn something from a UA-cam comment. I had no prior knowledge of art history, now I do, so, thanks again
What the fuck was that at 2:58? Was mom's giddy laugh an inside joke? A blooper? (Don't say "Art Project" please). Seriously, though, that me "errhh?" aloud. I like it, though.
Congratulations, you`re smarter than the comedians on comedy central and the random person on UA-cam that you`ll never meet. Your mother must be so proud. Now, if you`ll excuse me, I think I`m going to go watch some other funny videos, and not make disparaging remarks about them on the comments section in order to compensate for my intellectual insecurities. Oh yeah, and Portlandia is fucking hilarious!
Lol @ " the juxtaposition of motion and stillness.
Isn't that dangerous?
That's what I'm trying to say with this art piece"
I go to art school.
This is accurate.

I think this represents the duality of man.
The Jungian thing?
You're thinking of Dicknanigans
Once your mind goes to art school you never leave.
Yeah. I wouldn’t suggest going to art school, unless you want to be a department manager at Dillards.
@@LemurJackson what about photographying? Or should I just stick to doing landscape and nature macros on my own and learn from books?
@@kishascape Photography is the worst of all arts to go to school for, hands down.

SO RIGHT ON!
as an artist, I see this by the side lines all the time.
Thank you Portlandia for doing this video.
my feeling after doing a BA in history of art, film and design. Thank you Porlandia, such a relieve !
… it’s relief, not relieve … but I am an art project, so it’s okay. 🍇🥃🦉
If you want an entire movie of this, I highly recommend Art School Confidential.
I lost it at the Treadmill part.

Wonderful.

“How do we see ‘theft?’”
“Well, I mean, *I* don’t like it.”
The 120k "banana held up by masking tape" piece of art is befitting to this skit.
I tell my kids it's more of a commentary on value and commodity than anything else.. like what/who gives something value, and who determines the value of the currency used as exchange.
Yes, I am an artist, and yes, my children are tired of hearing about it.
I like the satire of contemporary art here.
Lmao omg the Dadaism reference is so hilarious. That's literally what contemporary modern art is today.
Sugar Daddyism.

This always makes me think of the Sedaris essay, about his brief voyage into performance art and methamphetamine! Good stuff.
What is it called?
Performance art is basically just terrible/half-assed thespianism with extra pretentious sprinkles on top.
@@kishascape that's the essays name 🤣 lol thanks I'll read it. Love David sedaris!

The oatmeal represents the immediacy of today's society.
I took a polaroid of this art piece and will display it at my gallery tomorrow.
Human trafficking isn’t a joke, I think. That day when my passport was taken and returned in exchange for my signatures on blank sheets :(
What a brilliant show
I'm more of a classical, renaissance and Dutch genre type of person.

Shes laughing at the irony of being in an art studio/museum where there are photos, but taking photos isnt allowed.
I was going to ask that too! Lol
You're supposed to decide for yourself why she laughed. There is no "right" answer. It's like English literature classes in school.
she broke character. it was supposed to be on the blooper reel.
This is why postmodernism doesn’t work. Art, like morality, consists in drawing the line somewhere (as Chesterton said).
dat laugh at the end...
Why is this satisfying to watch?
