Absolutely agree. That boxset is mindblowing and unlike anything else on the market. For $150 it's less than $4 per film. And you get a 250 page book included. What's not to like.

As much as I love Criterion I really wish they would put more animated films in the collection. As of right now, they only have Fantastic Mr. Fox, Fantastic Planet, and Watership Down. Wouldn't it be neat to see Allegro non Troppo, It's Such a Beautiful Day, Angel's Egg, The Tale of the Fox (1938), Son of the White Mare, or any other foreign/independent animated feature in the collection?
I COMPLETELY agree! I would also love to see the 2014 film Song of the Sea to get a Criterion release! I am all in favor to see more animated films join the collection. 3 is not nearly enough.
@@maplestreetmovies Well if nothing else that's why there's GKIDS. They are very much like Criterion except for foreign/independent animated films like Song of the Sea, Boy and the World, April and the Extraordinary World, and many others.

CKprimeval07 - Although I would too for a more diverse & convenient catalogue on older animated movies that aren’t overrated Disney/Anime. We got to understand that live action films are the majority of the medium shot as films so as a consequence that many more live action films are forgotten more and or are deteriorating every day. I am reminded of what happened to the seemingly last surviving film reel to the uncut 1960 Alamo film which was a personal dream of John Wayne to make. It was only remastered up to the release of the laserdisc & VHS while even in the archives of MGM deteriorated to where it seems like it can’t be recorded from anymore. I would indeed want Felidae covered however I would need to prioritize that Murder by Contract be done first. Watership Down was a win however Mr Fox seemed to have been done more out of the collaboration with Wes Anderson and the subsequent new releases of his filmography in the collection.
One film I can recommend is “Paris, Texas”. It was a movie my dad saw when it first released back in 1984, and by saw I mean he saw it in a tent someone was showing art house films in Moscow, ID (yeah I’m Idahoan also!) He only saw it once but it changed his perspective on his own life. At the time he was an alcoholic and struggling to overcome his addiction. He told me this was the movie that gave him that final push to attend an AA meeting and come back from it for his children and his own life. About a year ago I wanted to surprise him with this movie to watch and by the end he was crying which I’d never seen him do before. I was born by the time my dad was well and sober so I never got to see him in that state. I saw so much of him in the main character of the film and just how the story was so parallel to his life with his first marriage. He suddenly passed away a few months back and was surrounded by all his children. His life motto was “I’m learning to love” and that’s exactly what I felt from that movie and exactly how I’ll continue to live my life. Although this film was for obvious reasons very personal for me, I can’t help but recommend “Paris, Texas” to you Nathan. It’s what got me into Criterion, and plus, it’s a rad film. Hoping your collection is going as strong as your passion for films! Thanks, Bill

Definitely recommend The Seventh Seal by Ingmar Bergman, one of his most essential films. Wild Strawberries, as he mentioned, is also very good and I recommend both heavily
Haha funny enough those are the only 2 Bergman films I've seen! I liked Wild Strawberries much more personally. I loved the iconic chess scene but I thought the movie was otherwise okay. I went in with high expectations and so while I didn't dislike the movie, I think I was just underwhelmed by it.

I saw The Sevemth Seal for the first time about a year ago. I love a lot of different kinds of movies from mainstream normie fare (when I think it's actually good) to classic cinema (though I'm not so pretentious that I'm afraid to admit disliking something in spite of being held in high regard), and this is probably one of my new favorites. I literally just started collecting Criterion films today on sale, and the 4K version of The Seventh Seal was one I absolutely had to get, no negotiations. As both a lover of the movies and as a believer who has done my fair share of existential questioning, it's one of the most powerful and moving films I have ever seen.

The first Criterion I ever got was 12 Angry Men and I’d also highly recommend everyone own it like you said! Some others I recommend are On the Waterfront and The Silence of the Lambs, two classics and best picture winners! Awesome video as always 👍 - Chris

Thanks for the wonderful video, Nathan! You mentioned a lot of wonderful titles. I wanted to discuss 12 Angry Men specifically. It was both the first Criterion title I ever purchased, as well as my favorite film currently in the collection. It is absolutely essential. For those that are not particularly versed in classic film, and want an entry point, I always point to Sidney Lumet's masterpiece. It is such a wonderful dialogue and character driven piece that really strips everything else away, and allows you to see giants of the industry interact. Taking place in essentially one room (minus the establishing shots, and the bathroom), it is cool enough that Lumet is able to pull off as engaging a production as he is. But, the camerawork is also absolutely stellar. He holds a lot of close-ups on the characters, creating both a sense of claustrophobia, and beautiful framing, alllowing us to engage with each of the jurors on a more intimate level. The overhead shots are great too. And of course, as mentioned before, the dialogue is what really drives everything forward. Henry Fonda's mild mannered performance contrasted against the force of nature that is Lee J. Cobb, and everything in between is something that deserves examination again and again.
Now, back to Criterion as a whole. "12 Angry Men" is just one example of the amazing content that is available. We are incredibly spoiled with the transfers, and the supplements, not to mention the amazing covers and commissioned art made specifically for these releases. So, that being said, the price tag associated with these titles should not be a hindrance. Between the Barnes & Noble sale and regular prices on Amazon, they are accessible. With my B&N membership in companionship with the 50% off, I get standard titles for $18.00! The anxiety that might accompany viewing international films (with dreaded subtitles for first timers) for the first time will quickly fade away as you allow yourself to explore the work of greats like Kurosawa, Ozu, Godard, Wenders and so many others. It is a bit of an acquired taste. But my goodness is it worth it.
It is my honest opinion that if anyone wants to be a serious student of film, this should be home base. There are other wonderful labels out there, but Criterion is where you earn your Masters Degree in film studies.

My Criterion criteria: If you're a cinephile or aspiring filmmaker, only buy iconic 'must have' films that you think you'll revisit/study through the years. As for 'blind buys,' a lot of these films are available to stream on Amazon. Rent first and only buy if you _love_ the film and think you'll revisit it again. I've wasted too much money on Criterion blind buys, so streaming is a great way to keep your collection lean. It dulls the urge to impulse buy. As for silent films, you can't go wrong with Chaplin, but I'd start with "The Passion Of Joan Of Arc" and go from there. It transcends cinema. And if you're a guy, it's a great 'date' flick. A bottle of wine, Joan and the Voices of Light soundtrack... sublime.

@@maplestreetmovies It's probably the film I have the most fun turning others on to - just to see their reaction. And chicks who dig films love it. Most recently I watched it with my girlfriend and a friend. We smoked a little weed and halfway through I looked over at them and their eyes were wide and their mouths were hanging open. Seriously, you will never experience another film like it, and Pauline Kael and Roger Ebert both said it's the greatest performance ever captured on film.

Good recommendations! I've been collecting Criterion for 20 years now, and my first buy was the 3 disc set of Brazil. As nutty as the movie and Terry Gilliam is, I'd say this is a must have for film fans, fans of Monty Python, sci-fi, Robert De Niro, art deco, and the politics of Hollywood. Giving such a disparate outlay of Terry's original cut, the reduced version to fit 'contracted length', and the infamous "Love Conquers All" version which Sid Shineberg at Universal thought would make audiences understand and feel better at the end. Plus all the supplements as to the pains of making the movie, special effects, actor interviews, and the intriguing "Battle For Brazil" which chronicles the arduous fight Terry had with Sid and others at Universal over length, cut and release of the movie. Personally, I think it's Terry's masterpiece to this day. Like it or not - it shows how a simple idea can germinate into a lavish production meeting the right people. And how that production can be chipped away and retooled by all the wrong people.

I believe it was integrated into the film courses at UCLA, and may still be? Amazing even the vastness Terry gave it, only to find out it was models and reverse angles he pulled off. But still looks better than most $100 million dollar movies today!

12 Angry Men is my all-time favorite film and I recently got the Criterion blu-ray. Sidney Lumet is such an under appreciated director and I hope more of his films (Network, Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico, The Verdict, etc...) get Criterion releases. I’m very glad Fail-Safe just got added as well.

I just bought my first two Criterions during their flash sale last week. I got Ace in the Hole and Two Days, One Night. Two of my favorite movies of all time. I wanted to grab something that isn't on the Criterion Channel, and I would highly recommend both of those films.

1) Hidden fortress.
2) A federico fellini film (or the whole box set).
3) Speaking of box sets, the Bruce Lee collection.
4) pan's labyrinth.
5) The others.
6) Samurai movie(s) from a director other than kurosawa.
7) A Martin scorcerse film.
8) a western: 3/10 to Yuma, red river, the gunslinger, 40 guns, stagecoach.
9) etc, etc
Honestly, I feel like the best place to start is your favorite genre. I'm a horror fan, so that's where I started. First I discovered "Repulsion." That lead to "Les Yeux Sans Visage," which lead to "House", which lead to discovering David Lynch's material, which has deepened my obsession as I branched out from there. Then I found some great releases of movies I was already familiar with, like "Night Of The Living Dead," and "Carnival Of Souls."
If you have HBO Max, they carry a lot of films from the collection. Great way to have a little sampler platter of what they have to offer.

I would say for those who are new to collecting Criterions, to pick up a Powell and Pressburger title. Some of the best technicolor work, as well as restorations with The Red Shoes, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, Black Narcissus, and A Matter of Life and Death.
My must-see Criterion film would be Come and See. In my opinion, it is the greatest war film of all time.
I love Criterion Collection. The problem is that I am in Europe and their range on Region 2 is so far very limited. It is growing slowly three titles each month, but still. From you list I do own "Diabolique" (blind buy, but I've heard about it before) and "12 Angry Men" (love the movie and wanted to own it, and the fact that it was CC release was the cherry on top). From the Bergman movies I own "Sawdust and Tinsel" cause it's the only Bergman movie in Criterion UK, but I hope one day they will release "Wild Strawberries" and "Seventh Seal", cause I'd love to own them too. The same thing with Akira Kurosawa. If they ever release "Seven Samurai" or "Yojimbo" in the Criterion UK I will not hesitate one second before clicking the "buy" button.
Robert Sienicki that’s so unfortunate! Sometimes I complain because of what movies they haven’t released on Criterion but you have a whole different reason to complain for movies that HAVE been released, but not made available!
@@maplestreetmovies All those movies are available on blu-rays here, but not on Criterion edition, and well, that's not good enough! ;) Each month I am just checking what movies are they releasing now, hoping that there will be some classic movies to get.

Thought I should mention that if you need a criterion edition of a film and you can't wait for the barnes and noble 50% sale, might I suggest checking out Amazon, while I can't say this for sure, many of the releases I've been interested in are usually less than 3 dollars more than buying them during the sale (or at least that is currently the case as of the publication date of this comment) , buy I'd recommend double checking the films you intend to buy yourself just to make sure this applies to you

My favourite based on movie, overall packing and features has to be Dazed and Confused.
Great choices, Nathan, especially 12 Angry Men (Vertigo must be in their collection, I'm thinking)! I, too, have recently enjoyed some amazingly beautiful and innovative films through Criterion. I highly recommend these mostly foreign films: Bicycle Thieves, Sullivan's Travels, 8 1/2, Rules of the Game, Loves of a Blonde, Green for Danger, Les Diaboliques, 400 Blows, Breathless, Tokyo Story... Also it so happens that the versions of Loves of a Blonde and Green for Danger are free on UA-cam and excellent!
Crazy enough, Vertigo is not in the collection! And thanks for that pointer! I have a personal playlist of full-length movies on UA-cam so I'll have to add those 2 to it! Thanks for watching Ian!

I love that you brought up silent films. They’re easy to overlook, but I agree they are a necessity to anyone interested in learning about film. My favorite silent film I own is the Passion of Joan of Arc from 1928. In my opinion, it’s an absolute masterpiece!

Some criterion collection recommendations I think are good to own and for silent films is "the passion of Joan of Arc" for horror films is " night of the living dead" cheap criterions that u can find cheap and is good to start a collection with is "chasing amy , the rock , Armageddon" modern films like the breakfast club, dazed and confused, personal shopper, there are so many great films. Some of my favorites are two lane blacktop, this is spinal tap, seventh seal, silence of the lambs, there is films for everybody in the criterion collection. Then there are films that are hard to swallow. Like salo but it's still a good movie if u can handle it.

Honestly I could name so many but I'm limiting myself to just these five.
You can also buy Criterions on Amazon and Criterion's website. Even their website has them listed for a cheaper price- blu-rays at $32 and DVDs at $24 or $32. And you get loyalty points if you have an account. It's every dollar spent is one point; once you have 500 points you get a $50 gift certificate. And they have 24 hour flash sales on their site where the movies are 50% off- one is usually around February/March and then the second is usually in October.

yea getting Criterion in the UK has its pros and cons. We don’t get all the movies but they are far cheaper. HMV choose around 3 films that they sell for £10 for a couple weeks
In my collection of Criterion Collection movies I have: Seven Samurai, The Silence of the Lambs, Robocop (DVD) #23, Time Bandits, Lord of the Flies, The Blob, Rebecca, Godzilla, Dazed and Confused, Stagecoach, It Happened One Night, The Game, 12 Angry Men, Solaris, On the Waterfront, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, The Thin Red Line, Gilda, The New World, Boyhood, Night of the Living Dead, The Princess Bride, In the Heat of the Night, THe Graduate, Dr. Strangelove: ..., Watership Down, Rosemary's Baby, The Breakfast Club, and Some Like it Hot. I would recommend all these titles, they are all excellent movies and most are very rewatchable.

Own a few Criterion, but I don't buy them often because of how expensive they are. I've enjoyed all the movies I've brought from them, so I should probably deeper into the discount sales more often.

Only saw it once, it's one of Charlie Chaplin's later films where he talks and he reflects upon his past fame. A little more serious than his other films but I still enjoyed it.
You could always tell people how you make enough money to afford to build a collection from Criterion. How much do you spend per year? It's amazing that people make recommendations and leave money out of the discussion.
I recommend “The Vanishing” (1988). It’s an amazing thriller with a deeply unsettling ending. Great direction and acting as well.

As far as foreign/silent/german expressionist films go, certainly a Fritz Lang film should be in the collection. "Metropolis", "M", "Ministry of Fear" are all good ones to own, especially if you like film noir and Hitchcock.
I bought Ministry of Fear after filming this video! And then I've started M, but never finished it, really want to though! Didn't care for Metropolis but it's been YEARS since I've seen it, so I should give it another try!
@@maplestreetmovies M was one of the first movies I watched when learning German. It's a bit of a slow burn, but with patience and sucessive viewings, it does grow, least for me it did. Haunting film.
Another style of film I would suggest, especially if you enjoy Japanese samurai films, are Chinese/Hong Kong/Taiwanese wuxia films. Wuxia is a genre of Chinese literature. Wuxia are simmilar to samurai in that they have a code. Typical wuxia (武侠, or knight-errant, wandering knight) stories have a swordsman who doesn't belong to any particular group but fights to protect those in need for the greater good. Aspects of samurai films made their way into wuxia films too which you will notice. The two notable ones on the Criterion Collection are Dragon Inn (龙门客栈） and A Touch of Zen (侠女）。Both are excellent. Dragon Inn is almost like a western with the lone warrior coming into an inn taken over by corrupt officials to protect framed innocents. A Touch of Zen really takes wuxia films in a wholey different direction, and the cinnemetography is more akin to Kubrick or Tarkovsky with it's wide slow panning shots. It's a 3 hour masterpiece that was clearly an influence for films like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

@@maplestreetmovies yeah, wuxia has actually played a big influence on a lot of western fiction as well, such as the matrix, as well as characters like batman and doctor strange. dragon ball is also heavily based on wuxia, and the famous chinese novel journey to the west, where many elements of wuxia stem from.

I'm not, a little too pricey for me! I've seen the original Godzilla and against popular opinion I actually wasn't a big fan of it
I emailed Criterion to ask if they could restore “Last Exit to Brooklyn.” Based on the book by Hubert Selby, Jr. that was banned in Italy, and in an obscenity trial in the U.K. Criterion responded and told me they would speak to other staff members at a meeting. Hopefully it happens!

The Emigrants (1971) / The New Land (1972) A realistic look at the pursuit of the American dream. Real movie lovers MUST see this!

Sofo Tsikoridze this is a great question! I treat Criterions as treasures. They’re the only physical media I still buy. I personally love the booklets they come with. Each booklet has a film essay and behind the scenes info in it. Ultimately it’s up to you. For anything else I’d recommend digital, but for Criterions, I love the physical media.
Battle of Algiers is a thrilling political film that can be a good introduction into late 60s political films and Italian Neorealism
I got The Piano last year. Didn’t like it much. It was beautiful but wasn’t interested in the story or characters. Oh well, probably won’t watch it for a long time.

Can any movie become a criterion so long as it’s a masterpiece of a film? Also is “It’s a Wonderful Life” a criterion?
Not any movie, they're pretty strict on what gets the transfer and what doesn't. It's usually an obscure film that hasn't been released on DVD or Blu-Ray before. It's a Wonderful Life is not in the collection, but nearly everyone wants it in the collection!

LowFrequency I’m just recommending any Hitchcock film. I just didn’t own any at the time of filming this other than the boxed set and The Lodger. For what it’s worth, I’ve since seen those movies!
