Ever want more room to put all the stuff you own? How about a lean to style shed! In todays video I'll show you one way to go about building one yourself.
I love how Dave is one of the only UA-cam DIY video producers that does not turn a 15 min video into 12 parts! He also like the Great Andrew Camatata does not spend the first 5 min on the video jumping around like a mad man doing self promotion. Thanks Dave and Happy New Year!
That and i like how he doesnt spend 2 hours explaining every little thing like how he drove a nail and why he did it that way just smooth building sequences and great commentary
Great video Dave! As a retired engineer, it's refreshing to see your approach and execution to such a project. Well done, and very inspiring! Your background music goes perfectly with the whole presentation. Thanks!
Good job on the safety tips. As someone who has fallen through a roof, 12 feet to a concrete floor (not recommended), you were spot on. I am glad I did that when I was 18. Us old guys don't bounce nearly as well!
Would you make a video on wood stoves? Burning, temperature control, but mostly installing and everything about the care and maintenance - specifically, how to change the rope wrap surrounding the stove opening , as well as the ribbon cording that goes around a wood-stove glass window and how often to replace them. What to do if the stove glass breaks while hot and stove is a blaze, where to purchase new glass & it’s install. Maybe about safe distance from walls, wall liners, wood-stove install in an existing brick fire place and chimney liners as well as safety preps for flooring to set a woodstove on. Great if you can provide above information and “how to” for cabins or existing house. Love this lean-to video, I sent to my brothers.
I'm getting prepped to build my own greenhouse this Spring, so I am watching every video I can find that deals with shed construction. I like that you take your time and explain things clearly while also showing us what you mean. There are WAY too many time lapse building videos on here. I don't get anything except frustration from them.
Being out of the "do it yourself" life for the foreseeable future I pretty much live vicariously through your videos until I can get back in it. Always enjoy it when you drop a new one. The only problem with this one was.... it was too short! Just kidding. I know it's not easy to make these things but I wanted you to know how appreciated it is when you do. Thanks again for taking us along for the ride.
I really enjoy when I see a video of yours, or Brookes, or your brothers, or your son's. Some projects are simple and some are complicated and others are in the middle. Thanks so much for making a day for an old gal .
I was telling my wife how much I enjoy watching you, how your presentation is so much better than many out there. She said, "Have you told him? He might appreciate it given all the negative comments he receives." So I'm doing just that. Love ya, brother!
I did something very similar this past summer that I am proud of. Great firewood storage as well as stuff I don’t want in the garage (splitter, oil pans, etc). Great video. Stay warm!!!
Dave. Thanks again for inspiration. I want to go out in the cold and build something now. Also learned something in this video! I’m in the 12x10 cabin ya taught me to build in 2020. 18 degrees outside nice and warm inside. Thank you again for the inspiration and memories.
I enjoy your videos. Tip... I was in construction since early 80s and posts went to pressure treated but they were lasting too long. So construction crews started selling the concrete pitch. Now the posts last about 10 years in concrete. I've still got posts after 25 yrs.
I love watching the videos to learn something, (and be entertained but mostly to learn) though I will never personally build something like Dave has. I will however, be available for advice to others...😊
Great job Dave. I've one to build on a 60' barndo this spring. It's always nice to learn from another's mistakes. I'll keep my cordless drill on my tool belt 😂
I'm a retired professional carpenter and I have to say, Love your work and your Keep it simple I diot aditutte ❤ and your concept of Big Government. You're a great person LOVE YOU MAN.
I watch Dave everyday..Love hearing his voice to , Kind of calming ..He is family in my heart Thank you Dave for filling a void in my life you mean a whole to me and my family you just didn't know it
This is great awesome Lil project I truly miss this great stuff I lived in Gladwin county for many year's this helps to bring back so many wonderful memories of building the same kind of good ole country living!!!!!
Always take the time to work safely on a ladder or while working aloft. I once rushed to finish a job because it was so freaking hot , 104 degrees in August. Needless to say I’d ended up falling 18 feet. Broke my left wrist in 3 places, broke 2 ribs, and completely tore my left rotator cuff and left bicep. Took me over a year to recover and heal up. Lucky I was wearing a hard hat at the time, otherwise I think I would have stove my head in. Don’t compromise on safety.
You have to do what you can when you can . I remember laying in a muddy yard as a teenager to swap out a transmission , because I had to be at work the next day.
I loved this video. Actually, I have really loved every video you have put out good sir. Stay safe and I can not wait to see what other little side project you have coming.
Dave- you are the best teacher ! I want to build a storage shed and I don’t even have anything that needs covering! You are extremely entertaining and informative! Thank you! Happy New Year! 💕🇺🇸💕
Here is the difference between your videos vs others building the same lean to. I watched your video twice and couldn't take even 5 minutes of some other guys' videos. Great job all around. ❤😊👍
IV been stuck at home with a shattered ankle. You n your wife have kept me sane and distracted while I'm stuck inside. Thank you! Sending love from the Adirondack mountains of NY
Great video! We put large gravel rocks in the holes before the wooden 4x4's so the wood can drain off any water it absorbs. Ours is 35 yrs old now and no rotten 4x4's. Thanks to Bob Villa's recommendation. years ago.
You're a good guy Dave Whipple. I live in a big city apartment and can't really build much here, but I don't miss any of your relaxing and educational videos.
I feel like I'm working alongside my father. Your talent of simplicity. Simplicity is dad saying folks complicated life that's is so easy by just getting started and do it. Knuckle busters, plumline, chaulk lines. String and Amish lumber till we he got a mill to cut his logs. This looks like the garage pole barn slash chicken coop and where we changed motors transmission and being my fathers 1st born son that just happened to be a daughter. I'm blessed to have these skills and simply know how to. Tytyty for waking up old memories of dad and I and even my brothers as they did come along with try try method he always said was how it gets a job done 😊☕️💛 Hello to your family and we loved the music in last video was something I put on again while I was getting things done. Appreciation do I have for you and wife , family and pups, and I'm glad you all started a UA-cam channel.
Love the videos Dave, it’s therapeutic being able to build and take your mind off of other things. Stay warm and Go home and sleep well. God bless you and the family. Until next time.
Good descriptions on the building for someone who’s never taken on a project like that! All made more possible because you’re wearing pnw handmade boots. Fine work all around.
love your "how-to" videos....no long, drawn out unnecessary dialogue like many videos ....just clear and understandable, to the point instruction for the project at hand. I have been building houses and structures since my teens ( am now 62) and worked alongside several carpenters to learn what I have so far. I will stress I am NOT a carpenter, just a "builder"... LOL !...I have always learned something new from your videos. Your presentation of the material is very well done !! Thank You !
Hi Dave, Thank you for all your videos and simple to follow instructions. I enjoy your outdoor projects because they always give me ideas and I enjoy the scenery. All the best to you, Brooke and your family.
Hi Dave! Yep, lower peninsula got almost two feet in last 3-4 days! Winter is here! Great vid too! Love watching you build, your young knowledge is a pleasure to behold! God’s blessings!!!❤❤❤❤
Great job. (Almost) perfect timing. Nice & practical (e.g. can add the joist hangers later - without getting snow in your face. It’s always well worth watching your channel for refreshing skills & inspiration for everyday projects that make farm life a bit easier.
Thanks for all the motivation with your videos. last month my dad and I built a 12x16 cabin with no experience. We had a similar issue putting on the metal roof too, started sleeting when I was up top.
Looks familiar. I'm here in Vt. adding a 6'x16' glassed-in porch to my old farmhouse. At 69 I'm getting ready to sell this 40-year project this summer. Time to hang up the tool belt before I hurt myself.
Good one, Dave! Last summer a friend and I built a 25’x12’ lean to on my barn and it turned out great. I’ve also built a 12x12 woodshed and a garden shed by myself and boy do those clamps come in handy to hold boards in place when you’re working alone. I actually prefer to do things by myself so I can take my time (I’m 68) and figure things out, because I have no professional carpentry experience. I make a lot of mistakes pros might laugh at, but I also find it rewarding when I finally get things to work out. I’m the only one who sees and uses the things I build. They work fine for me, and that’s good enough. Thanks for your videos, I always enjoy them and learn a lot. ✌️🍎👍
Always enjoy your videos Dave. This one shows how uncomplicated building is, and is so matter of fact and unpretentious, it shows people that they can do it, too. I built my own shed years ago, and have toyed with the idea of expanding it, or doing another. Now I just have to get off my duff and do it!
So I says, let's see if Dave uses those rafter bracelet thingys. Then I says, silly Dave's keeping it old school and toe nailing. I'm sure you have some scraps to make brackets to tuck those kayaks high up on the wall out of the way. Thanks for the great video and making things look simple
Video was nice, good job. Construction wise, here's some info for everyone or maybe you too Dave. Stake and brace your posts, compact in 4-6" lifts with a 2x2, don't add water... you should have cut the top of your posts and put a proper beam on them and then land your rafters, that skimpy 2x6 should never be face nailed and 2ply 2x6 is too small, nailing blocks aren't needed, the purlins for steel should be 18" centers min for 28G sheets, NEVER put your screws on the flat, they go on the ridge (because no water runs there the manufacturer agrees), the wall should have been angle flashed and the steel overhang the last purlin 2", if you're parking things in there angle brace your posts for the day you hit them. Please everyone either learn construction or hire someone who does. Best of luck,
Dave, I would watch you build anything for alot of reasons. You are great at telling a storey with so much humour, fun and your facial expessions are priceless. Love the can o beans. 😁 I like how you left the drill on the roof. No mistakes. 😂 How did you tie the car tow rope up there in the first place? 😅 If I ever need to build a leanto, now I know I should hang up a tow rope first. Then once the roof sheets are on, the rope is already in place. But truth be told, I have never built anything. Maybe one day, with your brilliant instructions at least I can watch your videos and can build anything. Seriously, I love watching your videos. They are relaxing, fun, educational, practical, easy to follow, you are a great person, great humour no matter what the circumstances are like a snow storm, plus you play some cool music too. 👍 Great job, look forward to whatever you are building or doing next! Take care Dave. Waving from Germany 👋👋😎🎶🏡 stay radical ay😉
That build technique has come at just the perfect timing! I'm attempting a almost identical build on approximately half the size next week, thank you for the great tips on getting the angle cut from the building outwards. I wouldn't mind having some snow aswell 😂.. great video Dave & Happy New year 🎉
Love the sliding off the roof and feeling for the ladder trick 😅. I like that your content includes those real life situations most of us have been in. Your channel is my favorite Dave because you are so relatable.
I'm a beginner woodworker after retiring a few short years ago. I've watched many, many DIY videos on how to put up a lean-to, so when I am ready to put one on the side of my barn, on my own, I'll be more prepared. This video is, hands down, the BEST one . The relaxed, easy going narration is so nice to listen to. After watching this video just once, I feel more confident that I will be able to successfully put up my own lean to. Thank you for your expertise and really nicely done video. Looking forward to watching more of them!
I really appreciate your low-key, methodical approach to your videos. They've really helped my "light bulb" come on for a lot of the projects I have in mind at my off-grid cabin in the U.P.
Sure wish I had just half of your knowledge. I love to see something like this coming together. Enjoy watching you and all of your family, great folks all. Stay safe and GOD bless
Great video as always.. Love this channel. Dave, we are worried about your Son. In his recent video he seemed.very very depressed. We pray he is doing ok. God Bless
Dave when digging post holes you should try a manual ice auger. The kind you would use for ice fishing. You would be surprised how fast and easy it is to dig a hole versus a traditional post hole digger you used in this video.
But that razor edge I put on it! Oh, well, it can be reworked. The three point powered auger on the tractor for setting a zillion posts worked great, sold it when we didn’t keep stock any more. Never would have occurred to use the ice auger.
@@mred8002 a manual ice auger is about $60 and makes just a big enough hole for a 4x4 then instead of using cement I use pea gravel to fill the hole. Because I hate the dust associated with powdered cement.
I love this guy❗ He's a walking miracle after his health challenges and he is so down to earth....nice guy, smart guy, Lucky Woman to have him as her husband‼💙 P.S. His wife is just as 'ditto' nice, smart...works hard.....💖 Happy New Year 2024👌💯💥
Excellent video!! I always had my Dad to help me with my projects but lost him a few years ago. Even tho Ive done so much I just don't have the confidence to do it myself. I've been looking for a YT channel that explains all the steps to a project thoroughly but after watching various channels I couldn't find any, until now! I love the total breakdown but still short and sweet. I appreciate all the work you put into your videos and will be watching many more! Thanks so much!!
Watching Bush radical is like sitting comfortably by a wood fire! Love this channel!
I love how Dave is one of the only UA-cam DIY video producers that does not turn a 15 min video into 12 parts! He also like the Great Andrew Camatata does not spend the first 5 min on the video jumping around like a mad man doing self promotion. Thanks Dave and Happy New Year!

Great job Dave, enjoyed your video.
Yes!

I love how straight-forward and uncomplicated you made this. You hit all the basic points of any frame structure. well done
Absolutely...WELL DONE!!
Thanks 🙏🏼 Dave
Angels be with you always my man
Thank you for all you do
Great video Dave! As a retired engineer, it's refreshing to see your approach and execution to such a project. Well done, and very inspiring! Your background music goes perfectly with the whole presentation. Thanks!

Right? That looks awesome! I've never seen one built from rock like that.
I was eyeing that too, it’s bloody awesome.
Nice silo! I have a concrete one but it needs a roof.trying to get some ideas for it.
It’s beautiful!
It is lovely.

I wouldn't mind having some snow aswell 😂.. great video Dave & Happy New year 🎉
You and your wife have the best structure tutorials.
Thanks for sharing just what I wanted for a firewood store
And just like that…..another episode of Dave Whipple building something mildly interesting while providing an entertaining monologue.😊
Thanks
@@FireflyHill24 Ice auger, hope I remember. 😉
Missed watching you build things.
Love your videos been watching for 4 years.
