Gentleman Jack is the best show BBC has ever done. We need season 3 for sure. Dear BBC and HBO team, please take our million requests into consideration and make more seasons of this masterpiece. Love it 👏
This is a difficult scene to watch because Walker unfortunately though courageous to enter the marriage, just isn't emotionally able to handle her conflicting feelings. On one hand, she loves Lister deeply, but the social pressures, the age difference, the constant barrage of Walker's deep insecurity, and emotional instability, make this very challenging for Lister who has lived her life never questioning for one moment who she is in the world. In this way, Marianna may in fact have been a choice with more equanimity in the relationship. I adore this show, and the performances! :)
I haven’t seen a show of such astounding quality in years! This show is so refreshing and makes me feel seen in ways I’ve never felt before. PLEASE RENEW FOR A SEASON 3 BBC

Researchers state that there is no evidence that Lister cheated after the marriage. It is not in the diaries. It appears that part was some creative license by the TV show, as the diary does not have anything about that.

I think they were both very committed, based on the journals. They just had their share of challenges, as many marriages do.
What a pity that all those years ago, when so many, many children were so desperately in need of homes and families,( just as they are today), that these ladies never seemed to have considered adopting. I have never in my life heard anyone state 'Forever!' in such a positive, stately, magnificent way before. How did Suranne Jones find this way to interpret this sentiment or was it a great bit of directing or both!
Great scene. I loved the meteor references, as well. Both actors are terrific. And, Suranne's was an over the top career performance, embodying Lister completely.
I don’t see how this makes Ann Walker look bad. She loves Anne but she wants children she has every right to feel how she feels. If this is how it did go down in history. But tv likes things for dramatics.

So many lives made so much sadder because of stupid prejudice. RIP Ann Walker and Anne Lister you would've loved the 21st century. How many children do you think they would've had if they could have any??
When I watched this scene and discussed it with my wife after, my thought was that this was a conversation that needed to be had, fast forward to 2022, there are plenty of gay couples out there now who are either having children or adopting them. Of course in the 19th century this would not have been an option in any way shape or form, the technology for AI didn’t exist, neither would there have been any legal basis for adoption but the desire for children wouldn’t have been any less. Anne Walker was quite a bit younger than Lister and would have been going through the feeling that her body clock is ticking away, hence the conversation we saw here.
The technology should not exist, it’s an absolute waste of resources and money which could be sued to improve the quality of lives of those already living. It’s selfish science beyond anything else, all for the parents, never for the child. And those who are able to naturally conceive are no better, they think their offspring is more important and worthy than those already suffering every day whom they could use their means to help others.

@@madcircle0461 How is it pathetic? They were clearly ahead of their time, speculating on what has actually become an option. That's actually how progress and inventions happen; speculating about something that is not yet possible and figuring out how to make it happen. Of course they knew that two women and two men could not have a baby, on their own, at that time. There is nothing in their conversation that indicates they aren't aware of that. The conversation talks about envisioning the possibility. Everyone who has ever had IVF using egg or sperm donors, whether it's heterosexual or homosexual couples, the resulting baby IS their own. It's not ever "someone else's baby".
She always changes when there is something "effect" her mind. She has metal health I think Anne is sometime tired of her about this. But Anne really loves Ann and always wants to make her happy , you know till the day Anne passed away. I appreciate their love for each other.
Even the conversation before, it's still a subject that makes her sadness. She doesn't like men, but she think about children, and it's ok have doubts, inconstance. I think if it was possible, she would love to have a children with Anne, mostly in that time, have a family was important, and I think the problem with her will, the dependency of her sister and her husband, made all the things too bad, because if she had a child it could be different, it's about legacy too, besides bond and purpose. If it was nowadays they could consider all these things, so the talk could be another.
@@leticiacardoso4022 - Also, the implication of the how they are perceived in society if they have a child. Anne Lister's flaw is that she was a snub hence she only mingles with her own class and climbs up to the social ladder of Aristocracy. A scandal like this will bring them both into ruins. Look at how she threatens her own sister, Marian if she marries Mr. Abbott.
@@mayling141 But, Lister had other relationships with people not up the social ladder, such as Mariana. When she set her sights on Walker, it was actually a safer bet. Because of Walker's wealth, she was at less risk of feeling pressure to marry a man and more likely to commit as a result. As the series notes, Mariana and Lister knew they would be penniless if they stayed together when they were young. Women, at that time, did not have paths to earn their own living in ways modern women can.
Same sex couples couldn't even adopt in the 20th century. So, definitely not in the 19th century. It's only been approved in recent decades as an option.
@@SMichaelDeHart Of course I know it's not real, but the writer could have decided "the character doesn't feel that would be the same as having a biological child". Thus, adoption ain't an option lol.
@@AnoNymous-dh2sv It's only been a decade or two since adoption agencies began to be open about same sex couples adopting So, 200 years ago, it would not have been an option.
@@kimlinden2280 pleaaaase, they had many, they could've easily bought a healthy baby, make it pass like if it was from a distant relative and make him heir or heiress.
@@kittygranollers6232 You think that would have been easy? To fake a baby and heir, with all the relatives scrutinizing every single thing? There is no way, in that time period, that they could have passed off an "heir" when there was no legal basis even for their marriage. First off, they would have to be able to legally adopt a baby as a single woman. Not likely in those times. Single people could not even adopt as recently as the 1970's and 1980's in many countries. Second, if you pass it off as Walker's relatives baby, her invasive relatives would have investigated that thoroughly. And, Anne Lister's inheritance of Shibden for her "lifetime" period was also based on her discussion with her Uncle that she would not ever marry a man and, thus, would not have children and the estate would eventually go to another Lister wing after the deaths of both Lister and Walker.
@@kittygranollers6232 They wouldn't have likely been able to buy a baby and just easily make him or her the heiress. First, Anne Lister had promised her Uncle James that the Shibden estate would eventually go to the Listers of Swansea. It was the wish of Uncle James that the property would eventually pass to that branch of the Lister family. And Anne Lister's conversations with her Uncle about the estate and the Uncle's decision to put her in "charge" of the estate, upon his death, was heavily influenced by Lister telling him that she would not be marrying in the traditional sense, to a man, and thus would not be having kids and heirs. And, Lister was very loyal to Uncle James and she would have honored his requests regarding his will and estate plans. And, this is why Anne Lister's will gave Ann Walker a "life" interest, but also stated that the estate would eventually past to the Listers of Swansea. Also, I doubt that Ann Walker's meddling relatives, including those who had suspiciously gained property, in violation of Walker's father's will intent, would have allowed an adopted baby to be an heir or heiress and gain control of Walker's estate. Considering they had Ann Walker institutionalized, for awhile, after Lister's death, I don't see that they would have allowed a non-blood relative to inherit any of Walker's estate.
Do people realize that same sex couples have only been able to adopt children in the last decade or two? And, it's still very difficult in many regions.
You think they would have been able to do that 200 years ago? Gay couples could not even get approved for adopting needy children 25 years ago. And, they still can't in many regions around the world.
@@kimlinden2280 Yeah, good point. I was thinking about them taking an orphan under their wing or maybe even become patrons of an entire orphanage and then kind of become mother figures to all the kids.
You have to watch the whole 16 episodes to get a feel for the amazing acting. One scene, out of context, tells you very little about the acting, as you don't have the background of the characters and what led to the conversation.

@@leticiacardoso4022 I completely agree with you, I which they could adopt it’s so sad
This must have a 3th season at least
Unfortunately this is true, cause Captain Sutherland and Elizabeth put her in an Asylum, and she did have to fight with her nephew to get the house.
Lovely to see Ava Shelby ❤️

Can they not adopt?
Not in those times! Come on!
Same sex couples couldn't even adopt in the 20th century. So, definitely not in the 19th century. It's only been approved in recent decades as an option.
😭😭
Adoption was available in the 18th century too!!
I suppose she doesn't feel that would be the same as having a biological child.
@@imogenlenore you do realize that the show is make believe...as in NOT real. The writer or producer could have written it into the dialog.
@@SMichaelDeHart Of course I know it's not real, but the writer could have decided "the character doesn't feel that would be the same as having a biological child". Thus, adoption ain't an option lol.
Backn then, an unmarried woman couldn't adopt, unfortunately
@@imogenlenore I was being facetious...but in today's times, there are some that actually believe it's real.
Can’t they adopt. Have a ward.
I thought of that too, but back in those days it wouldn't be legal. They wouldn't be considered a family.
@@AnoNymous-dh2sv Thanks, because they’re women.
@@AnoNymous-dh2sv It's only been a decade or two since adoption agencies began to be open about same sex couples adopting So, 200 years ago, it would not have been an option.
Thank God , no babies

Adoption anyone?
I thought of that too, but in those days it wouldn't be legal. They wouldn't be considered a family.
Same sex couples have only been able to adopt in the last few decades. It's a very recent thing for couples to get approved.
Why cant they just adopt some children plenty of orphans out in the world
Do people realize that same sex couples have only been able to adopt children in the last decade or two? And, it's still very difficult in many regions.
And what about adoption?
You think they would have been able to do that 200 years ago? Gay couples could not even get approved for adopting needy children 25 years ago. And, they still can't in many regions around the world.
@@kimlinden2280 Yeah, good point.
I was thinking about them taking an orphan under their wing or maybe even become patrons of an entire orphanage and then kind of become mother figures to all the kids.
@@claragomezb.7849 Well, Walker did start a school for kids; so, they were involved with kids, in some ways.

This is the woodenest of acting I've EVER seem. It can only be the BBC
You have to watch the whole 16 episodes to get a feel for the amazing acting. One scene, out of context, tells you very little about the acting, as you don't have the background of the characters and what led to the conversation.
