This was the series that ultimately got Tony Grieg into so much trouble. The Windies won a test but otherwise capitulated, amid rumours of clashes in the changing room. Greig made his famous comment of "The West Indies are down, and when they are down they grovel - with the help of Closey and one or two others, we will make them grovel." In an instant, Grieg managed to fire up this West Indies side and they showed exactly what they were capable of when motivated, in the English summer that followed this.
The Windies actually lost the first test match by eight wickets after another controversial pitch at the Gabba. They came back strongly with an innings win at Perth but were never in contention after that losing the last four. Greenidge averaged 4.75 and Holding took only 10 wickets at 61 apiece. Greg Chappell had his best ever series scoring over 700 runs at an average of 110 and Ian Redpath a dour opening batsman who made Boycott look exciting hit two sixes in his penultimate test at Adelaide, they were the only sixes he hit in his entire first class career.
@@fruitopia6798 No, I was correct - you misinterpreted what I meant. Greig new what happened in this series and, when he spoke to the press before the series in England, he said "the West Indies are down and when they're down they grovel..." hence he was referring to this series. My point is, what happened in this series precipitated his comments that got him into trouble. If the West Indies had won in Australia he wouldn't have said what he did and the storm wouldn't have happened.
@@Wally-H Possibly but The West Indies had just played India prior to that England series. The Indian captain never said a word to antagonize the West Indians, but the Indians still ended up with over half their side hospitalised with numerous broken bones. Bedhi even declared at one point to save his tail enders from the onslaught.
Fire in Babylon ( the movie) describes this series... apparently all the stock footage got destroyed in a flood in a basement of the ABC...what a shame...
At 27:00 I saw signs of the future. In the name of I. V. A. Richards. It would have been interesting to see him 4 years on against this attack. ...But wait, it happened. And the West Indies got their first series win down under.
@@stephenmcloughlin7718 But you are not checking his presence when he was placed in the opening slot are you? Go and look again. I often wondered what the outcome of the series would have been if he had opened since Brisbane. Maybe you don't realize he actually was seeing the ball..and he had the reflexes to blast it!!
I remember listening to this series as a cricket mad teenager on my dad's shortwave radio in New Zealand. Commentators Alan McGilvray, Jim Maxwell, Dennis Cometti. Curiously Lillee and Thommo got dealt to most savagely on the (fastest) WACA track, Windies scored 600 at better than 6 rpo which was really romping along back in those days. Then Andy Roberts destroyed the Aussie 2nd innings as the Windies recorded their only win in the 5-1 series defeat.
Fond memories of the MCG during the 70's. The birds chirping at the cricket , as the bowler ran in to bowl and Clive Lloyd's batting in the second innings.
@@vish3161 Its quite shocking, no footage any where! No news footage, no radio audio, absolutely nothing, just talk of this innings! Viv Richards 153 versus Australia in the World Series Cup on December 09, 1979, no footage! It seems when Australia got destroyed by West Indians whether they are batting and bowling in the 70s, they deliberately did not show this footage! Absolutely disgraceful!

Grovel with what? Everyone knows when you're going to war you gotta have some artillery.
No that was the series in England 6 months later

There was a period of time there that the australians were easily number 1 team in the world

The days of good wi. Cricket, today's players hogwash, not worth paying $1 to see.

Not exactly the same attack in that Thomson had a shoulder injury after this series and was never the same bowler again.

Such a shame there's next to no video of the first and second tests of this series.
Nevertheless,it is what it is.
Thanks for the upload 😁👍
Cosier scores a ton in his first test and just raises his bat. Compare that with for example the ridiculous celebrations from the likes of Warner
Warner is a knob.
At 16 yrs old . . . remember listening 2 this match
Shaking hands for Cozier’s century - good to see.
Only about another 15min worth of footage off the top of my head. Mostly from news reels.
Guess those are some news reports. Have seen some on ABC library way back in 2012 when they had some amazing content on web page.
@@SymooDavid shame they haven't kept their content on iView.
I was just 10 years old and listening on am radio, I am very thankful for this, was my debut series as a cricket fan.
I think it was this series that birthed the WIndies pace attack.
Next series - when Holding appeared...

I was in School when this series was played. I am a great fan of West Indies team. Enjoyed watching this video.
Show the highlights of the SECOND TEST AT PERTH, IN WHICH FREDDO BLASTED THE AUSSIES FOR 169 IN 145..
you show those highlights
I believe, for some reason no one was covering that test on that day and so no footage of that knock exists ..
@@vish3161 Damn. I was looking for that footage too since it was when they measured the bowling speeds of Thommo and Co.
@@vish3161 Of course the ABC televised that Test on all days. I watched it.

Interesting to see Doug Walters standing in as on-field reporter, he was injured early in the season and didnt play at all.
The ball that sent Holdings off stump for a dance would have been over a hundred miles an hour.
Based on what evidence?
Thanks.
Absolutely
Thanks for the upload. Enjoyed well.good old memories
Good rare video!!! Thanks for sharing...Would you have the Perth test by any chance?
No majority of the footage was lost from the series.
What does the FBI have to do with the showing of the highlights of test matches played in Australia????
Its a copyright warning
thank for uplod
