I'm currently on Ares Island (2nd Island) I'm only 12hrs deep into ONLY because I'm taking my time, having fun doing the challenges, the exploring, side stories, and 100% the islands. I'm having so much fun with this game! I've played all the Sonic games and this has been the best Sonic game in years!
That’s how I was with the first Sonic Adventure. I see a lot of people comparing Sonic Frontiers to Sonic Unleashed but it feels more like Sonic Adventure 1. Sure I like to go fast during action stages but there are so many secrets and fun world-building when exploring and it actively rewards you for it with upgrades, Chao eggs and even additional Sonic games. Sonic Frontiers seems like that to me on a larger scale making you want to explore the world and solve its mysteries with so much room to make your own choices.

First Sonic game I’ve spent full price on since Sonic Heroes when I was 12. It’s the best he’s controlled since Sonic Adventure 2 and my biggest hope is that Sonic Team can take this format and push it further next time. I’m so glad they finally got a win.

Haven't played it yet, but plan to sometime in the near future. To me this looks to be a near ideal entry level game to introduce new fans to the modern Sonic gameplay style. It's experimental, but not to the point where it's a detriment to the experience. The moveset looks to be condensed nicely so every mechanic has a chance to be utilized as much as it can with the open-ness of the world and its challenges. Then it ties in the traditional levels with boost style and all to show how movement translates in that style. Again, I haven't played it yet, but looking forward to it.
This is the best Sonic Frontiers review by FAR! Everything you said hit the nail on the head, this game is amazing and I think a lot of people are going to not buy this listening to nit picks by other reviewers. You truly have to get your hands on it and experience it first hand to know how amazing it is, I never have fun exploring in any game but I do in Frontiers, it’s so calming and there’s no urgency pushed upon you, you can do whatever you want at your own pace, and the way the mood switches from peaceful to hardcore heavy metal anime style boss battles is so soul shocking it almost makes you emotional lol this is a glorious Sonic game!
Finished the game at 100% at around 20-21 hours. This is my favorite Sonic game, and everytime I think about the story I start crying. Dear god I hope Sega never lets Ian Flynn go!

I agree with you Matty. I am a MASIVE fan of Sonic, and THIS game right here, is awesome. The ONLY thing that's off to me, is the constant pop in but then again there isn't any new game that comes out that doesn't have glitches like this, so I'm sure that will be fixed pretty quickly in an upcoming patch. Don't know about you but the open world sections of this game kind of give me Death Stranding vibes. Hope you're feeling better soon too, man.
I think the issue people have with the floating rails (even if they don't realize it) is that the art style of the overworld is pretty realistic and the rails break that immersion. If the art style was more stylized like some of the previous games it's much easier to suspend your disbelief. It doesn't really bother me personally, but I would say the art style they chose for the hubs work against it in this regard.
That is actually a fair point I didn't acknowledge myself. I had no issue with floating platforms because its traditional in a sonic game. I just came off demon turf which has tonnes of floating platforms but that is a very cartoony game. It being realistic in the hub world does I suppose make it look a lot cheaper, like its babies 1st little big planet level or something.
Sonic Adventure had rails floating above the street while cars were driving past I strongly disagree. People are complaining about a game with a blue hedgehog with super speed running around collecting rings to get faster is insane
Central City must've been some wacky city having a road that literally loops around into an apartment (City Escape) and highways that leads to pits and corkscrews (Radical Highway and Mission Street) + all those floating cylinders for whatever reason. It's probably gonna be better if they made some of the platforms look actually supported though, but oh well
One thing I loved about SA2 is the fact that you went faster on the rails if you actually followed the curvature of the rail (balancing via the control stick).
Great video bro, hope you get better. And yeah I think this is a pretty good game, but also needed a lil bit more time in the oven. Story for a Sonic game is never really a main focus, but I feel the characters are sorta back to how they were before, which I miss. And I love Sage and how she adds a bit of depth to Eggman. Music is great, duh. The combat took me by surprise. In the beginning it looked stiff and robotic. While it still shows some of that, it's nice that it can be creative, and some of the animations fit well. The movement for Sonic seems to be the best it's been for a while, but I think the complaint from how he moves through the world. Like when you're running on some rock or bosses, there's a lot of clipping. Speaking of the world, them rails. Now, I love me some rails and springs in a Sonic game, but it doesn't complement the world itself. Taking some grassy Plains, and slapping some Sonic assets on it doesn't add up to a Sonic level, for me at least. It's fun to bounce every which way on them, but the world itself isn't memorable or have character. The camera is only really a problem when you try to control it, but then it takes control too. And the pop. I'm sure that'll get patched up, still looks bad tho. The enemies are fun and varied, so you'll have plenty of way to deal with them. And Cyberspace. Definitely not as linear as I thought, but could be more branched out. Seems to me they focused hard on how Sonic plays, and less on the world he played in. While the cyberspaces were colorful, you'll spend more of your time on the islands themselves. Branches as grind rails would be nice, jokes aside. It just need a theme and more ways to interact with the world other than bounce, zoom, grind. Definitely a step in the right direction, but for as much praise as this game gets, there are flaws. Sega should listen to the criticism, both good and bad, and move forward with it. Take what works and build from it. This was just me looking from the outside tho. I haven't played it and can only give a base critic. But I am pleased to see the direction it's going in. 6/10. Lemme know what ya think

Also those robot bosses are pretty fun. In my opinion the best modern sonic games is unleashed and frontier. honestly I hope that we get a sonic game with the Mobius freedom fighter story line one day. In my opinion that’s the best version of sonic.

sonic on the genesis one of the first games I remember, it's been really fun watching my son learn this game and enjoy it.. after all video games are for kids! happy to see the optimism!
As for the floating rails. I feel as though they could have taken a page out of final rush from sa2. Just put some floating rings around the floating rails to imply some sort of hover tech.
The tone of the story was like adventure 1&2. I hope this stays and we're past the campy sonic era! Having the world be vast with long stretches of miles would be a bad thing but since Sonic moves so fast its way more bearable. The random obstacles in the air look terrible so I hope in the future they can implement more organic looking obstacles to the world that fit the worlds different themes. The sonic boom song animation from long ago was so cool and made Sonic going fast in an open world a dream to play. They just need to do some different things to nail it better. Also cyberspace is very fun but theyre very short. Make less cyberspace levels and make them over 2x longer like the unleashed and generations stages and also make the S rank time more akin to 1-2 than the usual steamroll it is. Unleashed still has the best polish and boost stages imo but this game is a very good step in the right direction!
Dude Matty you gotta get in on the comics! I fell off but the first print series was absolutely amazing! They introduced Turbo Tails and Hyper Knuckles. They get so dark and deep and focus on other characters. Plots are amazing. The specials were great and this is all not even mentioning the absolutely beautiful artwork used. I used to buy 2 copies so I could make Pogs out of one of them they were so well drawn.... lol
I'm glad this game is getting some love and with all the big titles coming out along with God of war ragnarok. I'm having a good time playing both at the same time.
I really like the game too. It's fun just running around as sonic and the boss fight kinda feels like a shadow of the colossus type of way to beat them. It's a great game, and I hope more of this foundation is built upon. Best sonic game and its fun to see my daughter play it on her switch as well. But judging from the handheld mode, cause she only has the switch lite. It doesn't look that good with low fps and just doesn't look great, so I let her borrow my steam deck to play it and she seems to be really enjoying it more.
Only have a couple hours in so far but I’m really enjoying it. From the get go I’ve thought that the whole floating rails and springs thing is perfect in an open Sonic game. It doesn’t stop the flow of the game when you’re running around which I think is really important for any Sonic game
This game was really fun, as a massive platformer fan they really executed this game well and im not a big sonic fan but now i am. Definitely a great improvement over the last main sonic game from 2017
I was just as surprised as you! I kind of overlooked the last few 3d sonic games. But gave Frontiers a shot and I am really enjoying playing it and it's fun to explore the openworld section then mastering the more traditionally style levels. It's great! I do feel some critics are so jaded by Sega and the sonic franchise you won't be able to ever persuade them to like it though haha
I understand why there is so much pop in. Because of the way Sonic works (he's pretty fast), they need special engine tech for streaming textures fast enough for the game to keep up especially on Switch. Game engines like Unreal or Unity don't have this feature set and would quickly break down with this fast movement. So while yes, the pop in does suck, they had to use the same engine from Sonic Forces to make this because of those features and it's honestly very impressive that they were able to make these open world zones with what they had. I am fully expecting the modding community to pop off with this game, there are already some large scale projects in the works that I won't talk about in this comment due to heavy spoilers. But once you beat the game, check them out on Twitter, they're doing some impressive stuff.
I guess the floating Rails looks off putting from an open world perspective as opposed to the linear of other games. Like from a different angle or perspective, which may be why it seemed weird. i got over it, was too busy using them and the other challenges to care that much in the long run.
It’s 39.99 on Amazon now. Let’s just say I’m glad I waited. But I can wait some more. I’ve never been a fan of Sonic, but I hear it’s a lot better than their past releases. I’ve been burned before by them so I was super wary. Open Zone is what they call it.
Great game! As a sonic adventure area fan this was such a great step in the right direction. My fa oriented thing is the story and the writing and the voice acting. A more serous story and acting is so good in sonic! Like adventure 2 story is peak cause it was serous. Still some work but over all great. The only huge thing I do hate about this game is the 2d sections. They aren't fun and in the cyber space 2d sonic doesn't feel good to play at all. They have messed him up largely so other than the 2d stuff it's fantastic
SkillUp damn near killed my anticipation for this game, he wasn't too impressed with it. But a fair number of other reviewers had positive things to say about the game. In the end I'm glad I picked it up. I'm having fun with it. Especially the cyber levels. Getting those S ranks are equally stressful and fun, and they're very well designed. Can't say it's the best game ever or anything, but it has definitely gripped me. It's a fun Sonic game you can play casually and relax to.
My problem with the Sonic Frontiers situation is the critic reviews on Metacritic. It's like these professional critics don't give high scores unless it is God of war or souls like game. The critics gave Frontiers an average of 72 right now on Meta Critic. The Users have it at a 9! The critics game GT 7 an 87 and the users gave it a 2.1 because of the massive amount of issues at launch and gameplay issues. So I can't stand the critic reviews anymore and Sonic Frontiers should be an average of 80 on Metacritic at the least!

60fps is so so much better. If you have a decent tv, it'll upscale to 4K anyways and I can't tell the difference in this game, resolution wise between both modes, usually I can easily tell. The camera movement is so much smoother at 60fps, so when you move the camera everything isn't a blurry mess. It will also make the controls feel noticeably more responsive which is great for a Sonic game. Seriously, switch now.
They really need to fix the pop in and make quality of life improvements, Im not sure if it’s limitations of the engine but maybe they just didn’t have enough time. Hopefully their is a future patch that fixes a lot of the pop in problems. The pc version does have some issues and the menu screen is a pain im the ass to navigate on pc.

The 1st Sonic on Sega Genesis had random loops and springs scattered in a world and coins in mid air; that of course isn’t realistic in real life. WHOOOO CARES!! The rails kind of reminds me of Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart which is pretty cool to me, I always liked playing around on them
Dude Matty you gotta get in on the comics! I fell off but the first print series was absolutely amazing! They introduced Turbo Tails and Hyper Knuckles. They get so dark and deep and focus on other characters. Plots are amazing. The specials were great and this is all not even mentioning the absolutely beautiful artwork used. I used to buy 2 copies so I could make Pogs out of one of them they were so well drawn.... lol

I'm glad this game is getting some love and with all the big titles coming out along with God of war ragnarok. I'm having a good time playing both at the same time.
All i know is that with this game coming out im excited to see what a more funded and polished game, maybe even sonic adventure 3

I really like the game too. It's fun just running around as sonic and the boss fight kinda feels like a shadow of the colossus type of way to beat them. It's a great game, and I hope more of this foundation is built upon. Best sonic game and its fun to see my daughter play it on her switch as well. But judging from the handheld mode, cause she only has the switch lite. It doesn't look that good with low fps and just doesn't look great, so I let her borrow my steam deck to play it and she seems to be really enjoying it more.
Only have a couple hours in so far but I’m really enjoying it. From the get go I’ve thought that the whole floating rails and springs thing is perfect in an open Sonic game. It doesn’t stop the flow of the game when you’re running around which I think is really important for any Sonic game

This game was really fun, as a massive platformer fan they really executed this game well and im not a big sonic fan but now i am. Definitely a great improvement over the last main sonic game from 2017

I was just as surprised as you! I kind of overlooked the last few 3d sonic games. But gave Frontiers a shot and I am really enjoying playing it and it's fun to explore the openworld section then mastering the more traditionally style levels. It's great! I do feel some critics are so jaded by Sega and the sonic franchise you won't be able to ever persuade them to like it though haha
I understand why there is so much pop in. Because of the way Sonic works (he's pretty fast), they need special engine tech for streaming textures fast enough for the game to keep up especially on Switch. Game engines like Unreal or Unity don't have this feature set and would quickly break down with this fast movement. So while yes, the pop in does suck, they had to use the same engine from Sonic Forces to make this because of those features and it's honestly very impressive that they were able to make these open world zones with what they had. I am fully expecting the modding community to pop off with this game, there are already some large scale projects in the works that I won't talk about in this comment due to heavy spoilers. But once you beat the game, check them out on Twitter, they're doing some impressive stuff.
I just like that Sonic CONTROLS well again. That for me, makes it a hit.
Sonic Frontiers is getting a dlc roadmap for 2023, including a juke box, playable characters and a new story mode.

I guess the floating Rails looks off putting from an open world perspective as opposed to the linear of other games. Like from a different angle or perspective, which may be why it seemed weird. i got over it, was too busy using them and the other challenges to care that much in the long run.

It’s 39.99 on Amazon now. Let’s just say I’m glad I waited. But I can wait some more. I’ve never been a fan of Sonic, but I hear it’s a lot better than their past releases. I’ve been burned before by them so I was super wary. Open Zone is what they call it.
Great game! As a sonic adventure area fan this was such a great step in the right direction. My fa oriented thing is the story and the writing and the voice acting. A more serous story and acting is so good in sonic! Like adventure 2 story is peak cause it was serous. Still some work but over all great. The only huge thing I do hate about this game is the 2d sections. They aren't fun and in the cyber space 2d sonic doesn't feel good to play at all. They have messed him up largely so other than the 2d stuff it's fantastic

SkillUp damn near killed my anticipation for this game, he wasn't too impressed with it. But a fair number of other reviewers had positive things to say about the game. In the end I'm glad I picked it up. I'm having fun with it. Especially the cyber levels. Getting those S ranks are equally stressful and fun, and they're very well designed. Can't say it's the best game ever or anything, but it has definitely gripped me. It's a fun Sonic game you can play casually and relax to.

My problem with the Sonic Frontiers situation is the critic reviews on Metacritic. It's like these professional critics don't give high scores unless it is God of war or souls like game. The critics gave Frontiers an average of 72 right now on Meta Critic. The Users have it at a 9! The critics game GT 7 an 87 and the users gave it a 2.1 because of the massive amount of issues at launch and gameplay issues. So I can't stand the critic reviews anymore and Sonic Frontiers should be an average of 80 on Metacritic at the least!

I'm loving the 4K mode on Series X. I'll try 60fps, but I doubt I'll stick to it.
Stick to 60, the game feels a lot less sluggish this way.
60fps is so so much better. If you have a decent tv, it'll upscale to 4K anyways and I can't tell the difference in this game, resolution wise between both modes, usually I can easily tell. The camera movement is so much smoother at 60fps, so when you move the camera everything isn't a blurry mess. It will also make the controls feel noticeably more responsive which is great for a Sonic game.

Sonic Frontiers was fantastic!
They really need to fix the pop in and make quality of life improvements, Im not sure if it’s limitations of the engine but maybe they just didn’t have enough time. Hopefully their is a future patch that fixes a lot of the pop in problems. The pc version does have some issues and the menu screen is a pain im the ass to navigate on pc.

Because it looks so thrown together, like devs just placed a bunch of assets everywhere, it doesn’t flow into the environments naturally

The 1st Sonic on Sega Genesis had random loops and springs scattered in a world and coins in mid air; that of course isn’t realistic in real life. WHOOOO CARES!! If it’s fun that’s all I need. “Rails in mid-air…” 😒Let’s get back to just being gamers and have fun.
I’m currently playing so many games I can’t fit this into my schedule maybe soon I’ll buy it but it does look pretty decent
