Cars and Coffee And Chaos - Our 2023 Season Gets Off To A Rip Roarin' Start!

  • The mission seemed simple enough. Load up one of our cars, and take a leisurely ride 20 minutes down the road to hang out at the season opening Cars and Coffee at the Nashville Super Speedway.
And that's where we met Mr. Murphy who decided to enforce every one of his laws on us all at once.
On the bright side, we did get a snazzy new trailer out of the deal.

Linseed Oil for the deck planks, never slick, soaks in & never flakes or peels. Just add a coat every few years, darkens nicely over time.

Yeah, someone suggested Thompson's Water Seal in chat earlier tonight and as far as my experience goes, that's garbage. Maybe a deck stain with some pigment to reflect UV at least, but not polyurethane either.

I could not relate to a "car show story" more than this one. Like you, Tony, I prefer my garage to those gatherings. I'm sure your first thought was "screw it, I'l have coffee in my shop and tinker" but pure stubborness (like me) made you plow through the day to get to an event you didn't even want to go to. Makes for a lousy day but a good story.

suggestion Tony: Pull wheels and go get balanced- last three trailers we have bought, tires weren't balanced. I learned on the first one which wore out all 4 tires in less than 700 miles, yet trailer seemed to pull fine. Took to tire shop and was told- we sell a ton of trailer tires to people who just bought trailers and , just like you, tires went away really fast. So now, we go straight from trailer sales to tire shop and have never had the issue again.
    fwiw bud.

Well, my son’s friend was looking for a bike for the air cooled class in our club. He’d saved up the past year and half, we found a nice 79 Yz250 for him. He and his dad pick it up. Nice build- raced twice after rebuild. Well it revved to the moon when starting. So I knew crank seals - I send links for parts they come in Friday. Everything went bad-had to buy sockets, lost woodruff key in crank, hardware store one won’t work- my friend has correct one but an hour drive there abd back. Bike runs nice - but I didn’t assemble clutch right. Ok I tell them leave it I’ll figure it out Sat am- I see that pressure plate has to be clocked in an exact position- back together clutch slips. Do again and figure out manual not specific enough about clocking plate - wrap it up it seems to be gripping. Drop it off. They call from track say it’s slipping. Ugh. Well , racer parked by them is old Yz guy- he makes adjustment on pressure plate ( oh not as the manual says just by habit)- the kid wins first time out. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣

Not as Grand as Tony's story but i got one for ya.
Some background: I drive a 64 Dodge custom 880 (Chrysler C body) As my daily, go to college, go to the local shopping center, go to car shows/events. all the things the that you would use a car for.
So it was recently valentines day, i just needed to drop off some "Stuff" at a friends place. I go to crank the car, nothing happens, I check the battery 12.5V, ok good, has enough voltage to at least crank. my hand has just brushed up against the battery post slightly and it was HOT to the touch, turns out the battery terminal/clamp was making an intermittent connection causing huge resistance due to the battery cable/clamp not gripping tightly on the terminal.
Replaced the terminal clamp with a new one, car cranks now, ok good. (Still in the driveway) So as i was about to leave for my friends place, the motor started running rough like as if it was running low on gas, few fuely smells later the fuel filter has developed a crack and started profusely leaking fuel, borrowed my relative's car to get me to the parts store to acquire a fuel filter.
Few minutes later, replaced the fuel filter and started the engine, ran smooth enough but lo and behold the rear passenger side tire blew in the driveway,
(I've been driving with a gash on the sidewall for a few months but i still drove it as there was some good tread left, but drove slow in case the tire did blow)
Thankfully it blew when i was parked in the driveway. Got my full size spare out, it will work for now just to get me to finish today's errands.
And nearly at the same time the tire blew, the engine started running rough again, later figured out the carburetor needles & seats were being held open with some junk lodged in between the seats.
Now clearly, time is flying by and i need to have left for my friends place like 30 minutes ago, after giving the carb a quick clean through the nooks and crannies, i was off to my friends place.
Sometimes, feels like the devil himself has chose me for the worst luck possible in the day i need to be somewhere in a timely fashion.
But in some sense, i have stupid crazy luck for the tire to blow when i had the car parked.
As Tony has said, it's one thing after another.
I now have a "startup" sequence i follow in case some parts on the car has not received the preventative maintenance that is needed, like the tires in this case.

ST trailer tires are expensive for the "special" rubber that's supposed to last longer when sitting for extended periods, but they are made as cheaply as possible and utter crap, unless you have 16" wheels and can run 14 ply tires.

Tony... yeah, even though I have piles of snow and a tractor that won't run right blocking my driveway, you are making me feel great about what my life is like right now. I have to get two more pallets of wood pellets because thats the only heat I have and I need two more months worth before it will be warm enough to not run the heat. I rebuilt my trailer last year, it actually looks pretty good now with new 5200lb torsion axles tires and fenders. Getting it around my yard with the snow is so much fun, and the tractor is in the way. I think the points are giving up, so it might be getting a bearkerless conversion.

When I'm having a day like that, I stop the days plan and go back to bed. Which usually pisses my wife off cause she wants me to push through and finish the plan.

I've had a bad week but finally outrank the bad luck 3 days before the first cruise night of the year. Started when I needed to get tires for my 74 charger spring special, ive had no luck adjusting the camber so I go through tires like hotpockets. On the way I started hearing a terrible noise that I've never heard before, long story short it was the dustshield rubbing on the flexplate. When I got that straightened out and went to start the car, nothing. Starter is kicking out but now rotating, even when out on the ground, I did arc it to a trans line so I figured I fried the brushes, so almost 200 dollars later, I keep my cores haha, and same problem, I clean up the connections to the battery and it fires right up, starter was fine, so okay cool I have an extra starter now. So I haul ass to my house 40 miles up the highway everything was great I even narrowly escaped a pretty hefty speeding ticket. I get into the car and start driving the 40 miles back to get the work truck, half way the motor kills out and I coasted to the shoulder, I try starting it, the motor turns over but never starts, must not be getting fuel. So my girlfriend saves me, we get the truck and we drag it to my dad's where I work on everything. I tell him it's probably the fuel pump it's not getting gas, without diagnosing a damn thing, and nearly 300 dollars later I have a brand new fuel pump for a 99 interprid and so I have to yank the fuel level and screw on a fuel level from an 80s ramcharger so it will talk to the 74 fuel gauge, looks like I'm building a bomb haha, but I install it into the tank and we get it back under the car, still nothing, that's when I shove a screwdriver in a spark plug wire and get nothing. Now is a good time to add when I was looking for that noise I noticed what little exhaust pipe I have left was dangling, the weld to the Y pipe finally gave up, so for the time being I wired it up the best I could, the only reason I didn't take it out is that piece of pipe has the o2 sensor on it. Well what happened was it fell a little going down the road and melted the wires which short circuited on the pipe frying the fuse... and if all that sounded off, it's because it is haha 74 charger with 91 318 and od727 with a 68 dodge pickup driveshaft with a 99 interpret gas tank that has an 87 ramcharger fuel level. I got it one piece at a time, and it didn't cost me a dime, you'll know it's me when I come through your town

BUT it had Chinese tires on it which only lasted about 15, 000 miles before they started disintegrating. Still had great tread and everything. I replaced them all with American GoodYear top of the line trailer tires. Check speed/rating on the tires of your trailer. Congratulations on your new trailer. Definitely helps relieve mental stress.

That's a pretty amazing story, that ended with a very nice trailer. Seal that wood well, take care of that trailer- it improves the image. Respect.

I'm doing this wrong... Identical trailers on my local craigslist are $1000 more.
Also... Pretty much _all_ modern trailer tires are junk, even if new, and I would absolutely not trust the wheel bearings in any of them either. At minimum, bring a spare setup of each with you whenever you can. At the first moment possible, switch it over to heavy truck tires and USA manufactured bearings/races.

Used motor oil on the wood keeps it from dry rotting and protects it

You certainly had the luck of them that day.
Funny I have been thinking I'm not going anywhere 2023 and staying in the shop myself and get long awaited projects done. Sort of a Introvert anyway.
    Very nice trailer, congrats 👍

(As for the gas woes, I dunno about TN, but here in Georgia you can get ethanol-free gas with a bit of looking, we use it for yard equipment but it may also be gentler on vintage seals. If you're scavenging gas out of your own tanks anyway, maybe drain the usual pump gas out, insert some E0 and run it through engines about to be put up for the season or however long. )

Those o-rings have got me before after vehicle sat for a few months. Now we throw a can of Berrymans with some gas before parking and it seems to keep rubber parts from drying out or going hard.

Berrymans is strong stuff, I've always heard it's bad for anything rubber. I left some in a one of those thick plastic measuring cups mixed 50/50 with berrymans and marvel mystery, it just about melted the cup over night. I'd be scared to leave it in the tank, I usually use seafoam in the tank in my car that I dont drive much. I'm not saying your wrong for doing it just saying I'd be scared to do it.

Keep deck sealer on it, maybe it will last. The first wood deck on my trailer lasted 8 years even soaking it in diesel and oil a few times. This last deck is 8 years old and I have put nothing and only have one rotted board. The treatment has developed a little so nice the last one. That first deck was some of the first treatments since they banned CCA for consumer wood. I looked at sealer but as expensive as it is and figuring I'd have to do it a few times over its life I just figured it would be cheaper to replace the boards individually when they rot.

Very rare that I have a day as bad as that, but I do embrace the sanctity of my own home dearly. As many runs, meet & greets and full on car shows as we get here, I rarely front up to any. When I do, I usually have one or two issues of some kind, but yet to have a string of them like that.
Have a day off at the shop Tony 🤣
