    I did that to all my Mopars. The Chev and Ford guys couldn't figure out how I was able to get such good traction off the line. They'd look my suspension and scratch their heads. It was priceless.

    Back in the day, folks would try all sorts of stuff to get leaf spring cars to work. With modest HP cars, we would buy boxes of hose clamps and add them every couple of inches to the front of the spring packs. And then wrap the springs with electrical tape on the front half. Six or seven HD hose clamps and three layers of electrical tape and they'd hook just fine. As soon as you got over about 400 HP and sticky tires you needed something more on Fords. Usually we'd add parallel traction bars (like all semi's come with), but below the axle. Usually made from water pipe and welded on at the muffler shop 😀
    You wanna see destroyed rear ends, look at a semi that wheel hopped bad on mixed pavements with say 50K on the back - shrapnel ... 🙃

    My 74 Camaro with a hot 406 small block and old Doug Nash 4+1 runs consistent 10.50s on 9.5" tires with leaf springs. An extra clamp or 2, a pair of air shocks and a set of Competition Engineering slapper bars are the only modifications to the rear suspension and, I built this car back in the early 1990s.

    Waaaay back in like 78/79 a guy I knew drag raced a 67 Coronet and as I watched I’d see the leafs do exactly what Uncle Tony said it’d do! At the time I thought something was breaking and I told Keith about it, he just looked at me like I was a 17 year old knot head! Then told me that’s what they’re supposed to do!! 🤷🏻‍♂️.

    I'm amazed at the people who seem to be forced to watch videos they don't like, so they complain about them.
    I know one video maker who got criticized for having his kid in a video. The guy said "I had to watch the kid. It was either no video, or the video with the kid." People said "well, I'd rather you didn't make a video." They seem to be completely oblivious to the fact that they can NOT watch a video they don't like. I usually respond with something like "Instead of complaining, you need to call the police to report the person with the gun forcing you to watch videos."

    Another key factor with Leaf Springs.... they are forgiving. They kind of act like a shock absorber on launch. 4-Link with Poly Bushings coupled with Solid motor & tranny mounts are very un-forgiving. That's why 4-link set ups have the reputation of "breaking things" where the leaf's don't.

    Here in Australia the dragers used a bar bolted to the bottom of the leaf, when diff twists, the end would hit the end of the spring where it mount's, and stop any further twisting, (I think they called them traction bar's) thanks for sharing, all the best to you and your loved ones

    Guys are running 4s with leaf springs. Seems like it's more about the setup than the type of suspension. To a certain extent that is. Removing that accumulator spring made my stock 73 318 904 chirp second with 2.93 gears. It's worth doing.

  • @alvinb1959

    Yeah, I skipped it 'cause I don't do "Unboxing" vids. Figured I'd see the Parts when you install them.
    As for torque converters, I've always held them in place using a strong twine. Tie to a top hole, then do a quick cross twice to 2 other holes and tie it to a 3rd hole. Two strands holding it in place, then when ready, a quick cut with pocket knife to get it out of the way.
    Good to know about the front clamps on the springs. I don't Race but figure it might help out on my old truck pulling heavy loads.

    A buddy with a Duster Stocker ran SS springs for decades, then he added CalTracs bars a few years ago. He said it did improve consistency in 60' and 1/4 mile, but didn't improve ET much. The advantage with CalTracs is adjustability.

    I am a HUGE fan of leaf springs. In fact, for 40+ years, I have avoided cars that didn't have rear leaf springs if they were performance cars or I planned to hot rod them or make any kind of performance modifications. Coil springs are fine for a soft cushy ride. But I would never want them on a muscle car, race car, or hot rod. Leaf springs are THE way to go. On my very first car, which was actually my dads car, a 1963 Nova, I actually put longer rear shackles on the rear to raise it up so I could put Mickey Thompson L60-14s on it. That was the way you did it back then when you were too poor to afford air shocks.

    • @GLF426
      @GLF426 Рік тому

      There comes a point at which the spring can no longer control the rearend. You have to remember that the spring is also transferring weight. It’s driving the car forward. Evidence for this can be witnessed by moving the front spring mounting points up or down in the car. Ladder bars remove that responsibility from the leaf spring and allow it to simply be a carrier for the vehicle. Yes leaf springs work very well up to a point, but at a certain point, they just simply can not transfer the weight well enough. You may not wheel hop but you’re not going to get the tire plant and traction you’re looking for. There is a reason dedicated race cars go to ladder bars or 4-link setups. They need more capability to change the pick-up point in relation to the instant center of the car. This is something a leaf spring simply can not do

    • @geraldscott4302
      @geraldscott4302 Рік тому

      @@GLF426 "There is a reason dedicated race cars go to ladder bars or 4-link setups" I have built several race cars, all with leaf springs. Yes, leaf springs do have their limits, I just never had a car with enough power to surpass those limits. And I doubt Tony has either. Top fuel funny cars and dragsters have no rear suspension. I have used simple clamp on "traction bars" to help prevent wheel hop.

    Bow, when talking about springs, is not pronounced bow as in the pointy end of a ship, but bow as in bow and arrow. The word bow is used because the object being talked about is taking on the shape of a bow that is used to launch arrows.
    When you accelerate a leaf spring car the same force that is turning the wheels forward is also trying to twist the rear end backwards. That is why pinion snubbers are use to keep the nose of the differential from twisting too far backwards. This affects the leaf spring on both ends putting an upwards bow in the front and a downward bow in the rear of the spring. This puts the spring in an ess shape and is called spring wrap.
    The Chrysler setup with the diff mounted farther forward than most Fords or Chevys resists this better and a couple of extra clamps can be used to counteract this tendency.
    Ford and Chevy guys might get more mileage with a "slapper" type traction bar which attaches under the spring and extends toward the front of the spring with a rubber snubber which limits the twist in the spring. For best results the snubber should contact right below the forward spring eye as the bow in the spring under hard acceleration would mean that the bar would have to twist further to contact the spring, unlike the fixed end of the spring.

Knowing he wasn’t a Mopar guy I commented Mopar geometry doesn’t need them, just clamps and a snubber setup. I was just trying to save him some $ on his “budget” roadrunner. He responded saying the roadkill guys would argue with that. I came back with, ok it’s your build do what you want but google roadrunner drag car and see how many set up for street/strip have traction bars. I learned real quick he was a roadkill wannabe and stopped following. I don’t know if he got it up and running or not…

    Those people didn't even have to read. You stated at the beginning of the video that it was an unboxing video. You even said "Let the unboxing begin. Woohoo!" Or something like that. LoL

    3:00 I prefer my shifts butter smooth, thank you. I've been known to add shims or a stiffer spring to further smooth out shifts.

    My '66 Charger had fuel starvation problems, too. Ended up with a sump on the bottom of the tank. It works, but I think I'll end up with baffles and pumps in a stock appearing tank. Maybe.....

    Regarding the haters on the unboxing video, remember some people are not happy unless they are not happy.

    Thanks for your video you made about being burned out.. Not wanting to touch your vehicle anymore.. just sitting there kinda thing. I thought i was the only one.. but it seems youre like that too with this car and so forth.. It makes me feel like you and I are the same when we work on cars.
    I finally after months of procrastinating.. tackled.. my rear main seal and exhaust manifold gaskets on my amc 360... thabk god the manifold bolts all came out very easy.
    I think me waiting so long was me dreading all thr bolts being broken in the head.. in
    Its all done now and runs great
