We made a online auction program that automatically calculates all the different buyers premiums and also all the fees on each site we want to sell those items on. We know the maximum we are willing to bid on any item or lots, with profits. It's easy to enter lot # of various auctions and items, to keep track of everything. Many buyers in the heat of an auction online or at local brick and mortar weekly auctions are caught up in the moment and don't stop and think about buyers premium and if selling online those fees too. Had 3 brick and mortar auction houses and heard it over and over from customers saying I shouldn't have bid that much, they didn't consider all the auction and online fees. Bid smart everyone :)

It’s the Handling Fee and Shipping that can get out of hand if you buy at an online auction. I bought a 6” metal candy mold for $6.00 and the UPS store charged me $30 to pack and ship!
Also, some auction companies are not honest. I bought a quilt top online that they said was from the late 1800’s and sewn by hand, but only about 4 postage stamp size squares were sewn by hand and the rest was sewn by machine. Of course, the pics they showed were the hand sewn ones.
    Buyer Beware!

thank you so much, Kat, for this video... I have been using HIBID for months, but never noticed the tab in the upper left showing items I'm watching and items that I'm currently bidding on... so helpful to see without actually calling up the whole auction...

Thank-you for all the great info. I only had 1 hi-bid auction near me (150 miles) but one just opened 20 min from me so I'm going Sunday to view it all in person and bidding is on Monday, pickup on Tuesday. I'm excited to see if I get anything good. Dalton looks likes he's having fun swimming!!!

Another in-person benefit with many auction houses is you can get usually 3-5% off the buyer's premium if you pay with cash. (Around here it usually drops from 15% to 10%.)
We have an online local place that does this as well. They hold your credit card info, but don't charge you until you show up to pick up. Cash is king.

Kat, because of your videos I tried out Hibid this week for the first time and found out I actually have an auction house in my town! Online only to boot, which is great. I just picked up my first items that I won; 4 backpacks, a car window and a badminton set for $20! Next time I won't get the backpacks but I'll try selling them on Facebook. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

One thing I do to save on shipping is if allowed, I supply the shipping label. One thing that bothers me is almost none of them send an invoice for the shipping. Makes it a pain for record keeping. I did have an issue with one auction house that never sent an invoice and I tried calling for a week. When I finely got ahold of someone they sounded like they were on drug and told me they couldn’t use the card on file and had restrictions for PayPal it was super sketchy. They were supposed to send me something so I could pay and never did. But out of the maybe hand full of bad sellers I’ve interacted with most were just an annoyance and extra cost. 98% good sellers. Some auctions houses take over a month for shipping. But I make money every time. I spend 3-4 hours a day most weeks searching hibid.

I recently drove an hour and a half to preview an online auction. It was in Red Wing Minnesota and the perk was it was a lovely day and for 45 minutes I drove right along the Mississippi River on the Minnesota side and on the way home I stopped at a wonderful Bar and Grill called Bucknuckles, in Cream, on Wisconsin Hwy 88, that has amazing buffalo and elk burgers and decorates with antiques and antique advertising!!!! I swear you could stop there 20 times and not see everything. They hang pitch forks to display their wine glasses, they have a table made from welded together wrenches. They lower Harley Davidson side saddle bags filled with condiments from the ceiling when your food order is delivered !!! Plus, I was able to review some amazing things, and 3 days later I bid on the auction. The only downside was that my pick up day was stormy and rainy so it was not the most pleasant drive. Bit still, the stuff I bought was awesome and I will make an excellent profit !!! This was a hoarder/collector house...no garbage, but packed from floor to ceiling with wonderful antiques. There will be 8 more auctions from this estate and I can hardly wait !!!

We do have a local auction house in Lynnwood that is starting to do live auctions again as Covid-19 is getting better but also online auctions.

I’ve been using hibid for a year for sourcing. There are definitely bad sellers on the platform or I should say “ bad shippers”. I have had a couple items that were photographed on there good sides that were garbage. The learning curve was pretty steep. I made a lot of mistakes at first. Of course if I make $10 profit I consider that a mistake. I buy from hibid pretty much every week.

Great video, lots and lots of great information. Kat I started going to live sections about 5 years ago, (as you know), boy it's addicting. But now, I go to two to three live sections a week. Two places do them weekly, one place twice a month, and another once a month. Plus pur on-line auctions are crazy nuts. If I also decided to go to estate sales, we usually have any where from 30-85 daily within 100 miles from my home. Sourcing is definitely a blessing up here. Sorry so long.

Do you think some of the higher shipping costs may be auction houses that have already made agreements for the leftovers?
I’ve experienced that with some in home estate sales. The coordinator already has other plans for the some of the stuff and has put astronomical prices on it.

Liveauctioneers is a complete scam, fake items but the worst is the scam the auction houses run with the local UPS stores to 5x even up to 10x the shipping cost. You might win an item for say $60 but they will get you on the shipping. Shipping will cost you $400 on that $60 item. The local UPS store then splits the overage with the auction house. You have been warned.

    • @TheNurseFlipper
      @TheNurseFlipper  Рік тому

I have used them before and didn't have this issue. It depends on the size and difficulty of item. I typically only buy small items if I'm getting them shipped because of this. There are hundreds of auction houses and hundreds of ups stores not all over charge just FYI

They can send more pictures and tell you the condition and the size and confirm authenticity and then you give them the amount you're willing to bid and they become the floor bidder on your behalf. They can make arrangements for shipping. My husband and myself provide that service in Kansas City so I assume there's something similar in other cities

For like 30 years I wanted to sell on Ebay, but never did. I've worked since I was about 14. I had 3 wonderful children worked normally about 50 to 60 hours a week in a auto plant. Worked on my college degree to prove to myself I could do it and get good grades. I graduated with my Bachelors degree in associate of arts when I was 55. I would've at 54 but had to drop out 1 semester to care for my Dad with Alzhemers. He lived with us for 4 years before he passed. Sorry to ramble.
We rent a small house with 5 of us. We look to move because of the damage to the house from the roof and mold.
Meanwhile we have storage unit with things packed. We did have a brick and mortar store and loved it but health issues and it had mold we had to close. We had over 2000 followers on Facebook. I just don't know what to do next. We're trying to get 1 large place to work out of at about a sixth of the cost. I take notes and pics from your videos and hope to join in August. You name it we probably have it. I love all vintage and antique everything... lol. If you could give any pointers or encouragement it would be greatly appreciated. I suspect success on hibid is niche dependent. My niche isn't collectible, and I stopped using hibid and only attend live auctions. Any single hibid auction rarely had enough items to make it worth the drive. I'd find myself obligated to pick up the "filler" items I bid on before being outbid on the "big hit" items that would have made the trip worth it. In contrast, at a live auction, I just bought something I made a 3900 percent profit on, something else for a 2566 percent profit and third thing I made a 1000 percent profit on. I could go on, but I won't bore you. These are not the type of experiences I had on hibid. In my opinion, at least for my niche, hibid is too easy: too easy to attend, research prices etc. There's no way to get an advantage from being willing to do what other people aren't willing to do, go where they're not willing to go or flex your bargaining skills at a live estate sale.

Not sure about that as I've bought in tons of niche areas and done very well. It does take a ton of time to find the good deals though. However, if you have a good in person auction with good stuff that's a great option for sure unfortunately I don't

@@TheNurseFlipper You do have an impressive amount of knowledge about the value of a wide range of things! I watch your videos and feel like I'm leaving money on the table! The things I buy are heavy "guy stuff" that typically needs to be crated or shipped LTL. Your videos are interesting to me because they're not what I'm used to. In terms of experience, I can relate better with something like auto parts ebayers shipping an engine or door. You may spend more time on research, where I spend more time on logistics. Location probably plays a role in terms of what's available.

Are you most likely to bid on a lot auction rather than a single item? It has been my experience I can hedge my bets better with a lot. There is always a chance if I bid on a single item there is damage not seen, with a lot I can sell the other items as well.

Do you have a video on pricing? And Auction versus Buy Now offer? My biggest challenge is that after checking Worthpoint and Sold prices on ebay, figuring out whether to list as an auction or as buy now. And when listing as auction, what the starting bid will be. I listed, what I thought would be a high dollar item, that went for much lower than expected. How do you figure out how to get the Best price for high dollar items? Thank you so much for your videos! I'm learning a LOT!

    • @TheNurseFlipper

I suggest 99% of the time buy it now I rarely use auctions. If you do auctions your starting bid should be the lowest amount you're willing to take. For pricing look at what other of your exact item have been selling for.

@@TheNurseFlipper do you have any thoughts on whether signing up for Worthpoint is "worth" it for new resellers who are not necessarily looking at getting into this as a long-term business, but who may, for example, already possess a large amount of items that they wish to sell and may look into doing this just as more of a part-time side income - ? Or would just checking the sold prices on eBay be good enough for this type of reseller? (I don't know how much Worthpoint costs, to be fair).

I too live in Florida. I'm in Pasco County. A question - do you know where I can bring my items to sell at auction? I have lots of vintage & antique items that I inherited & need to, & want to sell. Any advice is welcomed. PS your eye glass frames are fabulous.

I live in Levy. If you're wanting to do a downsizing or estate auction you could search for an auction company. My mother in law lives there and might be interested in buying some. You can email me kat@thenurseflipper.com
