The very first shot of the movie is a POV of the killer walking to a house while breathing heavily. Reminiscent of the original Halloween's opening.

Yes! This! It also made me think of the opening to Black Christmas (1974) as well. It also featured the killer’s POV walking to a house.
Is it a coincidence that all three films are holiday themed? 🤔❤️

There's another throwback to the original Halloween in a scene earlier in the movie when the main character girl is staring out a window, sees the killer staring at her from outside, she then looks away, looks again and he's gone.

As you mentioned, there were many homages in this movie:
    My Bloody Valentine (1981) -
    - The love triangle
    - The water dunk scene of the first victim
    Halloween (1978) -
    - The opening POV shot
    - Look and John Carver is there. Look again and he’s gone.
    Happy Birthday to Me -
    - Setting up the table.
I’m sure there were more that I’m forgetting.

I definitely noticed nods to The Prowler with the pitchfork stalk and kill, and that the villain was the sheriff on a vengeful massacre.
I also wouldn't mind a sequel if the right story was made, but the final dream sequence jump to me cheapened an otherwise cool finale.
Lastly, can't remember if feeding the cat after a kill is something I've seen done in a slasher before, but it's something I've always wanted to see.

Scream 3 fans get their Kincaid was the killer justice.
I do wish there'd been more gore, and we got the original trampoline kill. But it was fun, and to be honest, I never suspected Dempsey thought it was Bobby the whole time.
Hopefully, we get a directors cut or extended version with Eli Roth gore we're accustomed to.
A Thanksgiving staple for sure, and hopefully Roth directs the sequels. Also loved that his voice was the John Carver modulated voice. This movie was fun and delivered!
So many love letters to the slasher genre, especially the end with the My Bloody Valentine remake ending.

Saw this last night, and I loved it! I’m not really a fan of Eli Roth but the type of gore he does lends itself perfectly for a slasher. The movie wasn’t groundbreaking as far as contributing to slasher tropes and rules; it was pretty formulaic. But Roth’s gore and humor elevated every set piece. Every set-up for each kill was done well. Formed like a well made joke.
One of my favorite references in the film is the scene of the parade. It was a reference to the Croaker Queen parade in I know What you Did Last Summer, where they’re looking for the killer in the crowd. I feel the whole movie had more of an I Know What You Did Last Summer feel than Scream or Halloween.

This movie exceeded my expectations because Roths projects are very hit or miss but I really enjoyed it. Though the story and most of the characters especially the final girl along with dempsey were interesting and well acted also the kills wow. Although I feel like the killer did die and maybe if there's a sequel based in the final scene which was one of the few cons with the film it could be supernatural or not maybe have a different killer or I could be completely wrong on this theory.Anyway this is in my top of the year 9/10.

Definitely one of the best slashers I've seen in years! Eli Roth absolutely nailed the tone from start to finish. The movie always felt like one big giant wink to the audience. I love that you mentioned several films with similarities to Thanksgiving...my favorite moment in this was the scene with the girl alive in the refrigerator, and her shock when she was forced to stay in it. This got a huge laugh from the audience and felt like a nod to Roth's "Cabin Fever" when the infected girl was left in the tool shed by her friends. LOL

I had the front of the store to the mall with the huge glass doors. The people would storm in and tackle me down, grabbing coupons, taking over fragrance and cosmetic tables. I know the irony of that scene too well. Well done film - will get it on DVD.

Less so about the kill, but I loved the sequence with the girl stabbed in the ears with the corn holders. There’s a moment following that when it changes from “movie sounds” to her ears ringing. It’s fantastic sound work.

The ending scene where the firemen are walking out of the warehouse was just like the Guest. Nice Homage, were she is sitting in the ambulance with her boyfriend and sees the firefigher walking out like it was him just like in the Guest where David walks out in the Firefighter outfit and Anna (I believe is her name) is watching from the Ambulance with her brother.

I thought the movie was awesome. I saw it today for the second time. I love the Halloween beginning, the Scream feeling and the kills were amazing. Also, love the Scream Alumni as the killer. Two in one year.

It was a lot of fun. I’m gonna go see it a second time because I went to a late show and fell asleep in the second act. That has zero to do with the movie, I was just really tired after a long day. It’s a good, fun movie.

Just saw it earlier tonight. It’s definitely a different feeling type of slasher. Mood wise, it was similar to My Bloody Valentine 3D and Freddy vs. Jason at parts. The acting was reminiscent of those two movies. The kills were pretty over the top. The car and dumpster kill was just ridiculous. There is just no way someone would die that way. There have been a lot of unrealistic kills in horror movies. One that stands out, was in the 2005’ French horror film, “High Tension”, involving a guy’s head pinned between the rungs of a stair banister and the killer comes along with a chest of drawers and pushes it into his head; lopping it off in chunks. He only other horror movie I know of where the sheriff was the killer was… SPOILER ALERT, “The Prowler.” It’s a daring reveal, and is not often done. Anyway, “Thanksgiving” has a fair number of jump scares, but they are effective. The scene with the guy approaching the kitchen with the bat, and sees his, in the kitchen cat looking at him, and that had us all thinking the cat was going to die, just so the killer could make en entrance, but no. He gets it in the gut with a running, electric carving knife out of nowhere. I had fun with this movie, but the end had some issues, such as the cutscene to where Jess is running, then it fades out only to come back to where she is still running away. Otherwise, it’s worth a watch.

This was a fun watch although there are certain themes having to do with Thanksgiving that I wish this movie could've explored more, such as greed, the sins of America's past, etc. I love how tongue-in-cheek the overall vibe of the movie was. Also love all the Boston accents, which I guess is prevalent in other parts of Massachusetts.

Thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Very entertaining and well done. Best slasher since “Scream”? Not by a long shot. I have to say, I wish the supporting characters had more discernible personality. I couldn’t get a gauge on who they were, so when they got chopped, it didn’t hold much weight.

My friend and I had a blast with this. Think they perhaps could've developed the Jess character a bit more and used Gina Gershon's to be more of a red herring, but I ain't complaining. Hope they do a sequel. Ps. Lee - any plans on doing a Wrong Turn 2 review? It's a fun watch.

One of the things that I really loved about this movie is that it felt like it was created by a person who truly loves and appreciates the slasher sub genre, and happens to be a very good filmmaker. I love the fact that Eli Roth showed that he was influenced by other great slasher movies by paying homage in some of the scenes and partly in the overall story. At the same time, this movie felt fresh and original. I think we’ll look at this movie a few years down the road as one that reinvigorated the slasher sub genre.

I had so much fun with this one (minus the few loud girls sitting behind me, but they were into the movie as well 😆)
I’m pretty happy to see a new Roth film that focuses on his strengths more than the weaknesses, and I was honestly still guessing on who the killer was throughout until near the end, where it started making sense

I think this time he’s “restrained” by studio mandates…. You can see that with all the sleaze in the 2007 trailer being gone….. this is not the 2000s when he was fresh off the success of Cabin Fever and Hostel….

Hey Lee I guessed the killer right away as well and for me it was the biggest negative for me. I’m surprised more people haven’t picked up on this by now but in a horror/mystery like this, if there is one very recognizable and well known actor amongst a bunch of unknowns in the cast he’s probably the killer and if a character ever says “trust no one”, he’s probably the killer and if a character checks both these boxes he’s DEFINITELY the killer. Stop being so lazy Hollywood writers. You’re NOT as clever as you think you are.

WOW I just watched Thanksgiving!!!!! One of the biggest surprises of the year !!!!! GREAT Eli Roth’s movie !!!!! The kills were FREAKING AMAZING!!! So brutal, really hard to say what my fav was, the one involving the trampoline was very creative despite quite simple. Honestly the scene at the parade with the tip of the ship going through the car driver was kinda predictable I just didn’t know what would cause it, I honestly didn’t see the revelation of the killer coming, so I think the twist was nice, maybe the thanksgiving dinner was a bit too much but still very shocking, I hope we get a sequel otherwise I wasn’t a huge fan of the very ending but it’s fine. I actually liked the characters and the black Comedy is very good, I shouldn’t say this but I found the Black Friday scene HILARIOUS 😂😂 obviously Eli Roth was gonna do something with that (kinda reminded me that Black Friday episode of South Park😂) I actually enjoyed the motivation of the killer. This movie was fucking good !!! 9,5/10 !
