    I won a Microprose competition in Your Sinclair to go there, fly the real Gunship simulator and get a goody bag full of their games. I picked up the brand new Spectrum Renegade there too, and Soft & Cuddly in the sick bag. Brilliant to hear about it again. Thanks!

    Seeing the ocean bag, I worked in an office a couple of years ago that had the original Ocean sign in the corner that was nicked by an ex-worker when the office closed!

    Nice video as always 😀. I'm a fan of Football Manager and I still play it a bit nowadays so it would be my choice for 1982. Also, it has been great to see Speccy Soccer in the show, thanks!

    It's a melancholy experience to see that long list of software houses and realise most of them have long since faded away.
    (Amstrad using those sodding 3" discs for the Spectrum was par for the course, the sort of reasoning that would late bring us the GX4000 and the E-Mailer.)

      In the end, i bought the Plus D interface and that was awesome.

    • @LuciferStarr

      I'm sure it was a format they had some kind of controlling interest in, thus forcing, or at least heavily encouraging, the user to keep buying their Amsoft branded discs.

      Veronica Megler for example, co-developer of "The Hobbit" in 1982, is "principal data scientist at Amazon Web Services" today. I think, many developers of back then probably have had good jobs lateron. We probably don't have to worry too much about them.

      1983 is going to be tough! So many iconic games. Yep, type in was good to get working. Big effort but worth it.

    I vividly remember the tape cover of Penetrator. We dreamt of playing such a "Battlestar Galactica"-style 3D space shooter as was depicted on it. The real game Penetrator couldn't quite live up to our expectations. I remember being a bit disappointed about that, although I considered it a good game.
    Only 12 years later, there was "Wing Commander 3". And today, well ... But although we have such dream games today, I'd prefer living in 1982 again to our times now.

      Sure do! I went to 4 of the shows and basically just kept everything together in 4 bags, which are like time capsules of each event.

    • @LuciferStarr
      @LuciferStarr Рік тому +1

      Forced onto a +3 after the in warranty, but after Amstrad buy-out, demise of our toastrack. The disc drive was a boon, but a shame so few multiloads were released to make use of the format. Also always hated seeing "©1982 Amstrad" upon switching to 48K mode.

    I played Penetrator for hours on end until I finally got to the end. Then you could play it again, only mirrored, and I completed that too. That was a great game, and I'm amazed that it actually came out the same year as the Spectrum itself!

    • @andrewdunbar828
      @andrewdunbar828 Рік тому

      I already knew Penetrator from the TRS-80 model 1/model 3, the computer I used most before getting my own Speccy. The Wikipedia article has long said it was ported to the TRS-80 but that's gotta be wrong. I'm sure Philip Mitchell must've written it first on the TRS-80 before moving onto Speccy programming at Melbourne House where he went on to write The Hobbit with Veronika Megler.

    Bigger playing areas on the Spectrum +2? That makes it sound like higher res graphics modes but thinking about it it must be referring to more RAM for more levels.

    The main reason I would have visited one of these shows which is talked about at the beginning is so I would have the opportunity to march up to the U.S.Gold section and ask,...nay DEMAND why their arcade conversions are so terrible,...and ask who the hell are Tiertex!

    Time-Gate is my all time favorite number one game. I've always wanted to build an enclosed sit down arcade cabinet for it. With a rumble seat, flight joystick and light up displays and buttons for the warp speed and shields. I managed to re-program the code to give outputs to a 16 channel I/O port, so I've had success with all the electronics, but my wood working and mechanical skills are non existant. (plus I have'nt got the room for it).

    The Hobbit: Its parser allowed commands to be strung together with comma separation. Open Door, E, E, N, Wait, Wait, Wait, S, get key, N, Unlock Door, Open Door, N, get sword...... It was possible to go from Bag-End back to Bag-End with the treasure with one press of Enter. And I did. Goblin and Elf random movements could through a spanner in the works, though.

      Planatoids and Space Raiders were the first games we got for our ZX Spectrum (just after Spectrums first went on sale in WH Smith’s), Timegate was a great game. Best type in game from magazine I ever did was called the Worm game, it was multi level and superb, but did require a fair bit of debugging.

    I did like the new game of the year feature you included but I thought you was going to pick the very best one out the lot ! Which to me was penetrator hands down , never really a fan of football manager sorry Geff🤓 The Hobbit I never got into however it did look amazing watching the screen being drawn down in that timeless adventure game, so has the business gone bankrupt😂😂😂 as we didn't have the using Spectrum for business feature😢 , that's what you get for z80 processing power in business😅 , nevertheless great video thanks again for your hard work, Retro Robbins.
