Yeah, I think they got the mix just right. You can't rely on tower defense alone and you can't take them out using only ship combat. A couple of times i've had to rip up my defenses and have a swap around after a wave crushed me. Upgrades are good and balanced due to the different enemy types. Not too impressed with the voice work but that's a minor criticism for what is overall a good game.
Lower difficulty and reset mission (this will give you more resources to work with) Try to collect as much resources from destroyed enemies (ghost mode) as you can during combat on the early waves. Focus on the tanks main gun (bomber is good for damage) and get quick at placing, changing & moving towers in between it's heavy shots (mortars do good damage) as the tank will take them out and move out of range. Swapping the defenses around your core to anti air will take care of the missiles the tank fires at your core leaving you to focus on the tank. You won't have access to your full power until you have finished the campaign and collected all upgrades / technology points but you can play around with your loadout and swap what you use with the points you already have.
