I'm glad someone finally has talked about this, I scored this MOS a few months ago and I'm leaving for basic in 5 days, wish me luck
Looking at reclassing to this. I see your comment is from 11 months ago. How do you like it?
How is it going?
How do you like it two years later?
@@kiddied1426 it's not bad but largely depends on what unit you get put in, it is a very small field so everyone knows everyone, it's still the army so it is what you make of it.
@@CooldBloodedGaming 88N here lol. Went to BCT in 2007 sheeesh this has been long
I was an 88L and nobody bothered me for being in the watercraft field. Besides all the training I received in that MOS crossed over to the civilian sector. Remember what Chris said you have to have a high score on the ASVAB. And yes you do receive sea pay. Missions are good and bad but over all I'm not unemployed and I make more money now outside the army. Pick away at these soldiers the success rate outside the army is very high.
What do you do in the civilian sector now?
I believe he founded a very successful shrimping business in Greenbow Alabama
So would you recommend it?
@@kiddied1426 He says sure but its very difficult to get a 88 Lima Or 88 Kilo contract, Especially since the Army is downsizing the fleet.
@@Cydia942 yeah I had read that, figured it'd be my pipe dream to ask a recruiter about if open though. I'd be considering 88L because I'm into mechanics, was looking at 91B but they seem to hate their lives most of the time. So I've just been looking around at different branches and MOS's, and these seemed cool. Thanks!
Thank you for posting this..I just picked this as my MOS yesterday it was the only position..my sargeants said it is one of the best jobs in the Army
I'm interested in this MOS and may pick it as well! If you can let us know in the future how everything goes!
@@DevoWevo27 it’s funny cause the boat field in the army is so small I would most likely see both of you
@nudel6750 Dude what is it like in this MOS? Like how is AIT, the day to day, and how often are you deployed or out on the water? Where are the duty stations I know there isn't many..
@@DevoWevo27 while I’m not an 88K, I am and 88L which is a watercraft engineer. 88K AIT is 6 weeks and what I’ve heard it’s pretty easy, you’ll be at Fort Eustis Virginia for the entirety of your training. There are only 3 duty stations, being fort Eustis, Joint base Hickam and Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, and the brand new one in Yokohama Japan based off of camp Zama. Deployments are living on a boat for 9 months and typically you’d be sailing around the Japan, Korea, Philippines area although those deployments may be phased out in the next month, being replaced by the new Japan station, although we did just get sent to Gaza a few months ago for humanitarian work. Besides deployment youll probably be sailing ever once in a while for like a week or two at most. And the day to day is coming to the boats for work and keeping them maintained and going home at the end of the day. Pretty relaxed tbh.
@nudel6750 What is the difference between 88K and 88L? Does this MOS transfer well over to civilian life? I have a family and unsure if I want to make the military a career but also don't want to be out on a boat for long periods of time either away from them.. This MOS definitely interests me though because I love being out on the water and I love the duty station areas!
Sea pay does apply
331st tc Fort Eustis. Will never forget damage control training and ship board firefighting (Norfolk naval station). served 2000-2003
Thanks Chris for the information as we commemorate Memorial Day. I have known a couple of these troops.
I wonder if they work with the Navy and Coast Guard a lot
Not at all, we have duty stations at Fort Eustis VA, Hawaii and Japan! Good luck. Also check 88L watercraft engineer even better job then 88K.
Thanks for this bro, I’m looking to reclassify to this
Hey Chris talk about hats I remember wearing a baseball hat. Then I went 2 a cowboy hat been wearing it ever since. Just want to talk about it. Harry Nice Memorial Day take it easy🤙🤠
Yes, you do get sea-pay, you do not have to be out to sea for it. You can go from coast to coast and country to country, they do it all the time. As for after the Army, you can receive a US Coast Guard credentials, depending on what schools you go to while in.
Is there a sea duty shore duty rotation or is it just scheduled off deployments?
You do Not get sea pay on all U.S. Army vessel's. There are some vessel's in a different class that do not get Sea pay. It depends on the class of vessel. And you do have to be assigned to that vessel. Which means you will sail at a moment a notice. Be prepared to be away from your family. I have sailed 300 day's out of the year. So if you're not ready to be separated for that long, you may want to choose a different field like infantry. Haha. JK. But seriously, you will travel so get ready for some interesting places. the boat field is the only place that you can become a "Shellback" in the Army. If interested, I can add comment's on this. It's not an easy choice of MOS. be prepared to study. Good luck Mariner
PS. I've got 3.5 year's of Sea Service
I was stationed as Ft. Eustis in 66/67 612th heavy boat on lived on board an LCU then to Vietnam on an LCM 8 in 544th QuiNhon hauling 60 - 80 tons of ammo. 61b20 mos .
I want to do this. Just have to wait for my papers to be approved then I'm off to MEPS for my physical 😀
Another good Vid. Never knew they had that MOS. If you haven’t done it yet helicopter pilot would be good or maybe crew chief. After all the Army has the best chopper pilots in the world, just my opinion.
I just got this M.O.S I leave for basic late July early August.
I'm looking into reclassing to 88k, have you made it to your unit yet? If so how do you like it?
I assume this is like Navy Seabees in the way that their work better encompasses that of another branch (Seabees are Navy Soldiers and 88K are Army Sailors)
Being an 88L/K has awesome civilian job opportunities.
What can it translate into? I’m just curious
@@alexeivoncarstein8286 well paying maritime jobs such as sea farers.
Like what
@@noelperalta4975 high paying civilian maritime jobs.
Hey Chris I'm leaving for Ait on Wednesday to ft Jackson so wish me luck
Make a video about personal days in the army
WOW Sounds Funn
Have a good Memorial Day! 🇺🇸
I have a feeling soldiers in this MOS get picked on a lot. Both by fellow soldiers and probably Navy sailors as well.
The ones i met were hillbillies. They were like “this right here is a daaawg” but really it was chains and ratchet binders
What world do you live in LMAO.
Some of the largest ships in the U.S. military are Army ships
Which ones would you consider the largest in comparison? thx
@@lisalalita I saw one at Norfolk Naval Station almost as big as an aircraft carrier.
@@slingo30 I doubt that. The largest army ship is 273 ft long Besson Class LSV. That's smaller than the medium sized Coast Guard ships which range from 110 ft, 210 ft, 270 ft, 378 ft, and all the way up to the 418 ft CGC Wasche, Navy carriers are over 1000 ft up to 1123 ft long USS enterprise. I've been a US military mariner for 7 years and i've never seen an army vessel that would be considered large. The army had aircraft repair ships in the early 1910's that were 350 ft but the coast guard manned them.
The biggest boats, not ships. The army doesn't have ships (USS hull number) they only have boats (USAV hull number) most US ships are bigger than boats and the ones that aren't are referred to as boats anyway
Hey I’m entering the army can you do one for 36b financial technician
Can you do 68C?
Please do 92A
Hey Chris! What was your MOS?
g00sE I think he was an 88M motor transport operator.
Maybe you could do a 25L?
Agreed
not to mention ait sucks if you’re a 88k, 88H, 88L. Not to mention the class is challenging, if you are thinking to be a kilo or Lima, no just pick 88H easiest mos ever. Also as a 88H, 90% of 88K’s get stationed at Fort Eustis where their ait is.
Do you have a higher chance of getting deployed as an 88H ? If so where at (location wise)
I was a 88H while i was in, 297th ICTC 180th Trans BN Ft Hood. I did my AIT cycle back in 2007, we still had Drill Sergeants there back then. Most ICTC's have an Active role while state side pretty much same mission tempo time round Peace/War. So if your a good operator most likely your going to be on mission. While i was with the 297th ICTC i was a one of the many primary RT-240 operators.
@@miguell3016 it really depends on your unit, if you were to get deployed it'd be korea, germany, and maybe kuwait
What is the security clearance for this mos
None, I am a foreigner with no citizenship and I qualified for this mos
This is the MOS I want. Is it hard to get into? What about promotion? Any advice?
This job rarely becomes available, so yes, hard to get. Easy AIT. Most likely will be stationed at Ft Eustis.
@@sdksniper I got lucky by landing this MOS, I was about to sign an airborne ranger contract but this caught my eye, I'm glad it did!
How do you like this mos? I went the airborne route and I'm trying to reclass to 88k
I've been waiting for a couple years now. Still no openings
Damn, well it's open for reclass right now
Do people in this MOS do duty in war zones (at sea)?
Lalita the closest we get is Kuwait
@@El-Chingon666 thx!
Yes they do. Also cross train extensively in other MOS's in the Army such as signal corp. 88M ,92A, 25U gun truck missions to name a few.
Can you do 88n
As of June 15th 2020 both 88k and 88l aren’t even an option. I scored 128 mm. I wanted to join the army specifically for 88l. Even willing to wait for an opening. After going through a bunch of the processing mumbo jumbo turned out the army has removed the MOS options for new recruits. I ended up enlisting with 91b. I ship in August. I’m not mad, just disappointed. They haven’t even removed the MOS from go army website.
This is not true. I just signed this MOS and am shipping in May 2021
@@saratrilla6421 THAT far away???
@@marlonmoncrieffe0728 I don't know how I got so lucky getting this MOS that far out, but needed the later date so I could finish school!
@@saratrilla6421 Ah, gotcha!
I'm hoping to ship out to boot camp in late May too, after my own semester end.
P.S. By the way, my #1 M.O.S. choice is CBRN Specialist (74D).
@@marlonmoncrieffe0728 Nice! Good luck :)
30 seconds!
Hey Chris would you do one on 18 medic. Soldier on.
Can you do 35F and the 18 series?
88q?
Will this qualify for merchant marine documents?
You may want to do Merchant Marines first since they have an age cap of 25.
To get merchant marine documents, your qualified for AB, OF JUNIOR ENGINEER. You still will have to test out with coast guard. There is no age cap. If you get you mms you can sail. Now every union has different rules, I work for NOAA and we have lots of older people on board
just join the navy
When can you do a video on PSYOPS/ 37F?
Dont do it😅 best advice I can give you. Be a linguist or combat camera.....way better....
@@LeaveMeArone ...Why?
I was looking into Psy Ops.
@@marlonmoncrieffe0728 only active duty is worth it. Peace times are not good times for psyop. Its a bureaucratic nighfmare right now. Cival Affairs gets more money and better missions by comparison. Save yourself from joining our depressed job of lifeless sacks barely making it by trying to promote. Go CA or go PAO
@@LeaveMeArone
PAO?
And what are some examples of bureaucratic nightmares?
@@marlonmoncrieffe0728 its just not good when it comes to having a purpose. If you wanna do work and get something fone then i would look elsewhere. Theres just nothing happening right now.
There's the 88 series MOS 1 week late
