- See behind the scenes of a Bonneville Land Speed run at 278 MPH, 80 year old Pete Aardema automotive engineer/machinist from San Diego, CA designs and manufactures some of the most bizarre machines around. In this video you will see the result of one of his latest creations, a naturally Aspirated 369 CID- V12 power plant which boasts a 920 HP @9800 RPM. Pete and is crew leader/engineer: Kevin Braun constructed this fabulous machine completely from scratch in Pete's garage. See first hand from expert driver: Scott Goetz as he makes a perfect and flawless 4 mile pass on the salt at 278MPH!

Love your videos!
Pete is a genius and knows how to make serious horsepower out of Frankenstein engines he builds. Thanks for your videos!
Frankenstein indeed - Glad you like the videos. I should have some more content soon!
Wow what a cool project and that was one sweet pass thanks for sharing
amazing engine build, that baby sings
Awesome job guys, congratulations.
Thank you !
Awesome 👍 looked like a nice smooth fast run!
Thanks 👍
You guys are phenomenal! Congratulations on your successes. BTW, what transmission are you using in your lakesters? Thanks,
Was that Ronnie James dio that said he was number 1? If so why isn’t one mentioning the fact that a rock legend was in here
Great video and congrats on the run! Do you think the canopy popping open scrubbed the aero any? Maybe a couple more mph in it?
Congratulations every one of you :)
Awesome! Lets see more of this custom engine please!
theres some more info and pics of it here, very interesting build:

congratulations guys, thats awesome! thats been my dream since i was a kid is to build a car and get a record with it at Bonneville. Someday .
Never gonna happen bro stop talking and start doing.
Congrats! Smoke in the cockpit is a concern though.
Awesome job, but please tell me what engine are you running?
This is the only motor in the world to exist. Pete Aardema 80 years old made the block from scratch and used Indy Aurora heads which he cut down and welded together. It produces 920hp at 9800 rpm. If you browse my UA-cam channel you will see a couple other videos with close ups of the motor and Pete’s machine shop.
@@GregQuirin I will take a look at it. This is what is so impressive about land speed racing. The innovation is so impressive. And then to hand build an engine and run it that hard and go 278mph. Few people have no idea of what it takes to do this. Very impressive.
@@GregQuirin Made the block from scratch. Im building a land speed 1947 BSA C10 motorcycle backyard engineering got to lover Bville good work on the record.
The fixer that scoop is easy . The opening is too large . The pressure will equalize in the back with less RAM
Could do without the music. Everything else is phenomenal.
So about as fast as a Königsegg in a straight line? Not bad, but the Königsegg could have driven there and back, so there is that.
Do you have any understanding of racing classes? This is a naturally aspirated engine of less than 370 ci, running in a car with all four tires completely outside the body. Take the turbochargers & fenders off the Königsegg and see how fast you run on the salt.
Seriously fast but why is the cockpit such a piece of shit on every land speed record car I've ever seen. Seriously, zero f@#ks given to mounting instruments, switches etc. Even the steering wheel looks like it it was made from the leftover of a shitty garden chair with ratty tape wrapped around it. As a driver I'd be seriously wondering what that meant for the rest of the car in relation to my safety....ie. does anyone who helped build the car actually give a shit beyond the bare bones necessary to make it fast?
Music blows
