@17:35 Guess you'll be taking your hat off.... :) Always an amazing cause to support and to keep supporting. Have fun in Scotland. Maybe travel round Wales next?

Hello sir, a wonderful film that my dad would have loved. He died a few years ago after a sudden decline into dementia from being a physicist and educator and the finest man I’ll ever meet. His loss doesn’t seem to subside. Wave when you pass on your way north and take care. It’s 2am so I’ll sort out my donation tomorrow. Thank you for filming and helping, both mean a great deal to me.
I’m buzzing off your excitement for the trip Simon, as you may well have gathered I’m a very excitable person most, no sorry, all of the time 😂 but it’s seriously great to hear the excitement in your voice mate I can tell you can not wait! Any nerves? Me, I’m slightly nervous, I can’t picture the vast open water we are going to encounter, I’m nervous about Charlie coming but yet so very glad he is to experience this massive event and challenge. All those nerves but (again I’ll use that word) so bloody excited!! Anyway mate, what a top video, some scary moments in this one Simon, at one point I thought you were going in, the way the canoe tips when in strong gusts wow! Those ships were scary big! Makes you wonder where they are going, how far. Very enjoyable video and a superb shoutout for our trip and the charity pal! Just £90 left and that hat of yours is off 😱 haha excellent mate! Thank you so much. 👍
Haha - I should have said 10k!! Super excited about the trip and glad you are too! You and Charlie will be absolutely right as rain, you’ve been getting in the practice and you’re in safe hands with Rick on the team - it’s going to be EPIC! 😀🛶👊
Simon, you would like the area surrounding Balboa Island at Newport Beach, California, lots of challenges to navigate and beautiful views, esp. close to sunset. Put it on your bucket list!
My neighborhood could use a trolley like that for her canoe. Do you have a video on making one? I'm beginning to think that I must have missed a bunch from You! Safe journeys to all And please stay healthy too! Thank you for supporting this special cause by the way as I have watched friends disappear slowly. I hope they find a cure AND a preventative SOON! Lovely trip!

Oh my Lord, whenever you launch or beach your canoe it brings back strong memories of a stripper canoe that I built in the 1980’s. The sound of Gravel scraping along the bottom really sends shivers up the spine. All of the little scratches that can eventually compromise the skin of fiberglass . Those things need tender, loving care when on dry land. I couldn’t take the stress anymore and sold mine to someone else who could carry on with the TLC that it requires. Lovely trip and sail across the estuary, thanks.
Yes, it takes a bit of care and maintenance - just completed some re-fibreglassing repairs, but I built it to use it - I’ll deal with scratches and holes as they appear 👍🛶
Swans again Simon without Maggie to protect you! You are living on the edge my friend 🤣🤣🤣. Can't wait for the Scottish trip, really looking forward to it. All the best Gus 👍
We love Pin Mill and have walked our dogs there on many occasions. The Pin Mill pub is lovely to eat at. The only trouble is parking, as the road is very narrow and the pay and display carpark is miniscule! It is also very popular when the weather is nice. It was nice to see it all from an unfamiliar angle - that being the vantage point of Arthur Ransome's 'Swallows' in 'We didn't mean to go to sea' shortly before they leave the estuary, get caught up on sea tides and find themselves in Holland! Great video Simon!
More great content. Thanks so much for sharing your adventure today. It was excellent that you kept naming landmarks and locations, which enabled me to follow along on google maps: Pin Mill, Shotley Sailing Club, Felixstowe Port, etc. Thanks again!
I’d say you have balls of Steel sailing through one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Pin mill is a beautiful part of the world although I haven’t been there in a while. Looking forward to your Scotland trip. I did donate a few quid towards a very worthy cause. I lost my Grandmother to Alzheimer’s and it’s heartbreaking to say the least. I must say after a couple of kayaking trips I’m getting rather addicted to being out on the open water. Great video Simon. 👍👍👍
Pinmill is where Arthur Ransomes book "We didn't mean to go to sea" starts. It was always a favourite of mine when I was a kid its nice to see what it looks like.
Arthur Ransome’s own boat (named ‘Goblin’ in the book) was Nancy Blackett. She has been restored and now regularly sails the Orwell and beyond. Look up Nancy Blackett Trust. Come sailing with us?
Took me a day longer but I am not disappointed. Ate so many noodles as a penniless student, I had consigned them to history. Noodles and tinned mackerel is an absolute barnstormer of a lunch. Thanks Simon.
Great Job "Simon, a bloke on the Orwell Estuary." Nice easy winds, for the most part. Glad you missed inclement weather. Looking forward to seeing your next submissions concerning the Scotland Adventure fighting Alzheimer's Disease. Hope to see you without your hat :) Believe me, I'll do my part to reach that goal. Smooth Sailing in the future!!
Nice mention for Craig there. He's a top lad, i always enjoy his videos and like yours, they've gone on my regulars list. I'm loving the sail idea. what a great way to get around. you can really see why our ancestors used the waters as roads back in the day. I was trying to work out how the rudder at the mid section of the canoe works, (I'm not that hot on these things). Look at all those containers full of Amazon and e-Bay goods most likely. Those ships are monsters aren't they. I spent some years in Southampton and Bristol so I've seen a fair few monsters ships. Good interesting stuff Simon, thanks for making and posting.

Lovely video Simon, I’ve paddled the Shotley to Orwell bridge route a couple of times in a sea kayak, with a stop at the pub at Pinmill on the way. The canoe sailing rig looks like it’s working well. I reached 5.5 knots downwind on Loch Oich when I did the Glen a couple of years ago. I also paddled it with the guy that wrote the guide book. So if you have any questions about the route I might be able to help. You now doubt hane done your homework, but 3 things that could be handy. No open fires allowed at the sites on the canal itself, get ready for the 70lm portage at Fort Augustus, and be open to doing the trip starting at Imverness if the wind is wrong. Have a great trip, I’m super envious!
Good luck and good man on the fundraiser. Love your adventures. In that the sail did not decapitate you, looking forward to the hat coming off! 👍😎🇨🇦🌲🛶👍👍👍
Simon: Thanks for another great video! But you don't need to apologize for the color of your jacket. I'm a beginner bushcrafter (learning from you) but a seasoned sailor. And although a gamut of olive greens and browns are much favored in clothing for bushcraft activities for the purpose of blending in with the environment, bright yellow and red are the preferred colours for open water sailing. Contrary to bushcraft, you want to be as noticeable as possible when you are sailing in open waters. There is a reason why that huge buoy (called "butt"?!?) you past sail on your starboard side at 3:12 is red and most open water life jackets are orange. Horses for courses.
I’ve done the Caledonian canal twice, it’s a fantastic trip. You will love it and I can’t wait to see the video. PS don’t forget a midge head net they can be horrendous
