Great video Sander, thank you. Quick question... On a Macbook Pro, how do I locate the local IP address of the computer - as I can't seem to see it in your video (only how to find the local router) Thank you :)
Hi Ian, you can find this under System Preferences > Network>Advanced>TCP/IP. The local IP address is called the IPv4 address, and should look something like 192.168.x.xx
This is pretty great, thank you! I am curious if you would know, is it safe to give out your public IP address? To friends is one thing. But I teach a jazz improvisation class and would love to see if I could try this, I just don't know how safe it is to give students I don't know so well that information.
That’s a pretty good question. I think I found you a well formulated answer: IP addresses are not really a secret and can change any time. A website needs to know your IP address to work properly and there’s no reason to not share your op address (source: security.stackexchange.com/questions/112696/while-working-from-home-is-it-a-bad-idea-to-give-the-company-you-work-for-your) However, do consider that opening a port could potentially be a security threat in some cases. You are giving explicit access to these people through the appointed port. I’d suggest to try and see if it works first as that can be a challenge in its own.
Sander Visser Hi again- sorry to trouble you but I was wondering if I might get some advice: I’m looking at which audio interface might be best for me and my wife - we’re going to both want to be playing at the same time - 2x guitar and vocals - would this work fit us do you think? vi.raptor.ebaydesc.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemDescV4&item=124024966368&category=123445&pm=1&ds=0&t=1578308485000&ver=0
When I run the client it starts up fine, and then I click on my copied shortcut (server), and nothing happens. You get that Server Controls window, and nothing happens for me. Any suggestions? The port forwarding seems easy enough, I'm on a Fios router if that brings any light to the situation.
Is suggest maybe removing the shortcut and making a new one. Other than that, I believe the newest Jamulus install has a “Jamulus server” program. Just fire that one up. Also, you don’t need to run a private server. Check here the latest details: jamulus.io/wiki/Server-Win-Mac If all this doesn’t work, there’s an easy way as well: go to koord.live and follow their simple steps. Someone suggested this. I think they give you a server to work with for free. It looks really cool, but haven’t been testing it extensively
@@SanderVisserSanderVisser Thanks! I actually have been using Koord for those who can't access their routers. I train faculty with technology in the classroom, so that's easier for them to use. As for me I was actually able to figure it out. A recent update for Jamulus includes the server exe, but I didn't see it in the file location with everything else. I had to search for the program "Jamulus Server" on my Windows PC and that did it. I could see the red thumbnail they included for the app in the file location, but not the .exe... strange. Idk if you covered this, but since I was accessing my server on the same machine I had to use 127.0.0.1 instead of my PC's public IP. Someone on the far end couldn't connect to my private server. I will have to troubleshoot.
Thank you Great help! 1 question, what do you need to put in the command-line when you want more users? When I add an option (after the -s) the server don't start. I saw I need to add -n, but it won't work, I do something wrong :-)
This is just for the private server: /Applications/Jamulus.app/Contents/MacOS/Jamulus -s -p 22124 -w "Welcome to my cool server" -s means start server -p is port -w is welcome message If this doesn’t work, you can also try to use koord.live/ . It’s not a private server, but I think it is an easy way to het together in the same server for free. They set up a server for you, I believe. You don’t need to put anything in the command line to add users. Users need to add themselves within Jamulus on their computer. Otherwise, I’d suggest checking out the manual/wiki as that contains a lot more info I don’t exactly know
I have the same size of mouse pointer at work. It annoyed my boss so much every time he would use my computer. He finally stopped using my computer. This was pre-covid.
Beste Sander, domme vraag natuurlijk.
Kijk anders vooral even naar koord.live.
Depends on the system you use. Haven’t tried it with Jamulus, but for Mac you can use iShowU audio capture to have the local audio recorded. Windows should be easier. Also, you can use -R to record in a reaper format. If you convert these stems to a different format, you can put it together with the OBS video in video editing software
Great tutorial! If I want to use this with a group of choral singers, can they get by with just their internal microphones? It's not ideal, of course, but would it work? Thank you!
My experience is that this doesn’t work. Our singer tried using her internal mic, but it was popping, hissing and cracking. Audio cards inside laptops aren’t really good for this. You could always try it though, YMMV!
That is because the audio card of most laptops is slower and has a lower quality than audio interfaces. If you sing directly into the input of the computer it’s slower than using a usb interface. You can still use a headset, it mostly has to do with minimising latency and getting the audio as fast as possible to the receivers
Thanks So much Sander. I have several ladies of the older generation so I don’t think this is quite for them just yet. But definitely good to know that it isn’t always the internet’s fault that my audio lags behind my lips when I’m singing at them. I’ll be sure to keep using my snowball mic.
Great instructions, thanks for all your work. Do the other band members connecting to the server also need a wired connection? Or will theirs work over wi-fi?
@@SanderVisserSanderVisser thanks for your response. I was just going through the video again and I notice you do say "make sure they have a wired connection". Missed that the first time, my apologies. Thanks again for all your work.
No worries, Dave. Hope it works! I see someone commented about Koord.live which looks like an easy way to use Jamulus once installed. Haven’t had the time to test it with others, but might be interesting for you!
Hi there I followed all your steps, I am using windows and successfully created a server, but the problem is my friend can connect to my server but myself cant 😰
You should connect to 127.0.0.1 I believe. It’s because you have to connect within your network, while your friend has to connect from outside your network
@@SanderVisserSanderVisser Hi Sanders, very helpful video. But this is where I'm confused. When someone wants to connect with me, they need to input my public IP address:22124, or their own ip address? In order for me to connect, I merely input the 127.0.0.1 address. Is this correct? Thanks!
Sorry for the late reply. You are correct! Other people (from the outside world) should connect to IP address:22124 and you should connect to 127.0.0.1
Really depends on any situation. Make sure you have the soundcard selected and drivers installed and wired internet. You could increase the buffer delay in case of a very slow computer or connections. Also, you can try to change the Jitter Buffer in the settings. Take it off of auto and change the settings: sourceforge.net/p/llcon/discussion/software/thread/0b61c18752/ Also you can try to change the settings of the interface: sourceforge.net/p/llcon/discussion/hardware/thread/b6c7e17a5b/
Sander, great video but you go through the [private server bit too quickly. I am having trouble setting up a private server. I have a ASUS RT-AC68U router. I believe that I have setup the port forwarding correctly, but I cannot connect to my own server. Also, when I try to run the Jamulus Server, I get an error message: "Network error: Cannot bind the socket (maybe the software is already running)." Frustrated.
Rich, as you set up everything on your own machine and try to connect from devices in the same network make sure you use the local IP-address of the server to connect too... If people outside your local network want to connect to your private server they have to use the external IP address..
@@dlettani Thanks, David, but my issues are even more basic. I decided to try connecting to a public server and Jamulus will start the connection but then simply abort and shut down. Since I am using Windows 10, I suspect that there is some conflict between Jamulus and Windows. And a new problem just developed: I had two Centrance products connected to my system and now Jamulus says that I don't have a ASIO driver that supports it; Jamulus was using the driver from the Centrance product. Very frustrated with Jamulus as I sing in a quartet and would really like to set up a private server so the quartet could rehearse together in real time. Thanks for listening to my frustrations! Merry Christmas. Be well. Be safe.
@@RichOwenVO Thanks and best wishes to you too! I use win10 as well, had no major issues. Is your Windows up to date? I got an error message about ASIO driver but I got it from www.asio4all.org/ ,installed it and this works fine.
@@dlettani I am going to do a clean reinstall of Jamulus after removing everything already installed. I will add the ASIO4ALL driver and then reinstall. Once that is done, I will try to connect with a closer public server and see if I can connect. So far, I have never been able to get that far. I have been using a MicPort Pro from Centrance as a pre-amp to my mic and headphones, but I will leave that disconnected so I can see of I can get the software to work with just my laptop's equipment; it's a 2020 HP Pavilion with a Intel Core i7, 10th generation quad-core plus plenty of RAM and dual storage, so I don't believe that I have any issues with the basic hardware. I'll post a new reply once I have all that done. This isn't high on my priority list so it may be a week or so. Thanks for the help and feedback.

But I teach a jazz improvisation class and would love to see if I could try this, I just don't know how safe it is to give students I don't know so well that information.
That’s a pretty good question. I think I found you a well formulated answer:
IP addresses are not really a secret and can change any time. A website needs to know your IP address to work properly and there’s no reason to not share your op address (source: security.stackexchange.com/questions/112696/while-working-from-home-is-it-a-bad-idea-to-give-the-company-you-work-for-your)
However, do consider that opening a port could potentially be a security threat in some cases. You are giving explicit access to these people through the appointed port.
I’d suggest to try and see if it works first as that can be a challenge in its own.
@@SanderVisserSanderVisser awesome, thanks so much for the quick response! In this case it seems that software like Jamkazam may be slightly safer.
That was so well explained. Thank you. Unfortunately, my router does not allow me to do Port Forwarding ...
That’s unfortunate. Maybe try koord.live to set up a server? It’s really straightforward
Brilliant! Exactly what I was looking for - cheers Sander!
You’re welcome, Ian!
Check here the latest details: jamulus.io/wiki/Server-Win-Mac
If all this doesn’t work, there’s an easy way as well: go to koord.live and follow their simple steps.
I will have to troubleshoot.
very nice explanation
Thank you!
Thank you Great help! 1 question, what do you need to put in the command-line when you want more users? When I add an option (after the -s) the server don't start. I saw I need to add -n, but it won't work, I do something wrong :-)
This is just for the private server:
/Applications/Jamulus.app/Contents/MacOS/Jamulus -s -p 22124 -w "Welcome to my cool server"
-s means start server
-p is port
-w is welcome message
If this doesn’t work, you can also try to use koord.live/ . It’s not a private server, but I think it is an easy way to het together in the same server for free. They set up a server for you, I believe.
You don’t need to put anything in the command line to add users. Users need to add themselves within Jamulus on their computer. Otherwise, I’d suggest checking out the manual/wiki as that contains a lot more info I don’t exactly know
@@SanderVisserSanderVisser Thanks, I will try
GREAT!! Thanks a lot :)!
6:02 ....lol ...that mouse pointer is HUGE!!
I keep on losing the pointer
I have the same size of mouse pointer at work. It annoyed my boss so much every time he would use my computer. He finally stopped using my computer. This was pre-covid.
Beste Sander, domme vraag natuurlijk.
Kijk anders vooral even naar koord.live.
@@SanderVisserSanderVisser Geweldig. Ik ga het proberen.
THANK YOU!!!
Hi, how do you record Jamulus in OBS?
You could always try it though, YMMV!
you explainig pictures a to fast and could not long enough show
No worries! You can watch it again. I believe in you!
Why can the headsets that the iPhone provides not be sufficient for a microphone or as most of my singers use is their laptop mics? Thanks in advance
Very well done and instructive. Big thanks!
You’re welcome!
Great instructions, thanks for all your work. Do the other band members connecting to the server also need a wired connection? Or will theirs work over wi-fi?
They also need a wired connection. It’s because data still goes fastest through a cable and you need the fastest way to transfer data
Other people (from the outside world) should connect to IP address:22124 and you should connect to 127.0.0.1
Hi Sander...how do I fix a distorted audio sound?
Really depends on any situation. Make sure you have the soundcard selected and drivers installed and wired internet.
You could increase the buffer delay in case of a very slow computer or connections.
Also, you can try to change the Jitter Buffer in the settings. Take it off of auto and change the settings: sourceforge.net/p/llcon/discussion/software/thread/0b61c18752/
Also you can try to change the settings of the interface: sourceforge.net/p/llcon/discussion/hardware/thread/b6c7e17a5b/
@@dlettani Can we take this conversation off public view? I did a fresh install of both Jamulus and ASIO4ALL but am getting error messages I don't know how to fix. I'd like to send you a screen shot. What is your e-mail? you can send it to my gmail: getrichvo@gmail.com.
Can a Jamhub be used for the audio interface?
I don’t know the Jamhub, but it looks like it has a usb out so it could work. I’d suggest to research it before buying, or, if you have it already, just to try it
youre really funny
great work mate!
Thank you!
Argh, the background music kills the focus as it's too loud in the mix! I also can't turn the speed up to x1.5 because of the background "noise".
