  • Hello :)
This is the requested transcription I did of the Steely Dan song "King of the World" from their 1973 album "Countdown to Ecstasy". The bass player on this track was either Walter Becker. This transcription can be found at www.muzento.com under Advanced - Songs.I found it a little difficult to clearly hear the bass part in this song. The drum part is really busy with lots of ghost notes, and I think there's percussion going on too? That made it tough to decide if Walter was playing 16ths in some spots or if it was an 8th note and the note from the drums or percussion make it sound like there's an extra note?
It's got a "Latin" feel to it, and It kind of reminds me of a Samba beat in some spots.
Keep it light and read it down. I hope you like it :)
Don't forget to like and subscribe and thanks for watching :)

Wow this is great Greg!!! I’m so glad you added another great Steely Dan Bass tab. I’ve already learned how to play maybe 4 of their songs and this is another one that’s going in my New Bass tabs folder in UA-cam. Can’t wait to play this once I get past my rotator cuff injury. 😢
I’ve been following you since I took up the bass guitar during stay at home shelter in place during pandemic and I really enjoy playing this instrument. Im very thankful for the bass tabs you added on your page and it’s easy to read and follow. My bass playing has improved tremendously since then. I’m about 30 years too late to only discover that the bass is the instrument for me. But nonetheless I always have so much joy playing it and it’s always next to me since I work at home 2 days in the week.

Awesome! I would have bet Chuck Rainey on this one.

Very cool deep cut...haven't heard it in decades. Nice stuff & chord changes during the synth solo. Whew.
The Latin/Samba feel, to me, is present (to a degree) in the opening Verses...upbeats on 2 & 4.
Some of this sounds like Chuck Rainey...I'm assuming it's all Walter Becker & the guys from the debut. PRETZEL LOGIC began their era of the studio musician. Great job, BTW. ;-)

This bass line sounds heavily influenced by Jamerson

It sounds like a latin/samba bass line to me.

    Sick! I love SteelyD.
Any possibility for "a Flowery song" by Five Iron Frenzy? It has a few sweet ska licks that i'd really enjoy to see transcribed.

"People Make The World Go Round" is another classic by The Stylistics....an era where even Pop tunes were "composed". ;-)
Others similar - "Betcha, By Golly Wow", "You Are Everything". All 3 from their debut album.

When I've seen that you've made a cover of Steely Dan, I expected something as difficult as this! Really fast!! I still remember your cover of "Kid Charlemagne" a few years ago and the hours and days I spent on it. :)
