They're probably looking because you guys speak english, brazilians are really curious, if there is police that closely nobody's gonna try anything. The thing about getting mugged or robbed in these types of places is, you have to pay close attention to your stuff, they won't take it from your hand, but they might take it if you place it somewhere and look away. São Paulo is not that dangerous, is just that people, mostly tourists, tend to pay little attention to their stuff, and that opens a lot of gaps to opportunists. There will rarely ever be a guy with a gun in a place full of people. There will rarely ever be a guy with a gun in a place with police.
São Paulo crime rate is actually lower than Los Angeles and on par with New York, but downtown is probably not the best place to take an expensive camera. On the inside of the church you should be fine tho. Even pickpocketers (?) respect the wrath of god (it's a joke, but also the truth). Some other things. Drinking is legal everywhere and at any time. Go crazy. Our pizza is better than our sushi by quite a large margin. You should try the many lebanese and arab food places. We have more lebanese people than lebanese in the actual country. Ibirapuera Park is a very safe and very large park, and if you are lucky, there are free concerts. Still, you should try the Planetarium
Really nice video, guys! I would just add to the other coments: - You can drink alcohool anywhere in Brazil (maybe not inside churches), whenever you want. BUT you should not drink while you drive or if you are going to drive later. We have a very strict law about the alcohool levels on drivers blood so, do not drink and drive is the best advice I can give you. - You should always be cautious in São Paulo's Downtown. Low profile always... In general, you should always be cautious in all major cities' Downtown in Brazil. Because usually they are not the safest places. - I don't think that the brazilian pizza is better than the italian. They are very different in my opinion. Even so we have very good pizzas. So it's worth to try. Including the sweet ones. - The guided tour to the Cathedral's crypt is very nice. You should try It next time. That's it. I hope you enjoyed your time in Brazil! 😀
I would never carry my camera to Sé Cathedral. You guys were indeed at risk. Unfortunately a lot of homeless people and drug addicts in that area. I'm glad you followed your intuition and quickly went inside.
@@chicagomike that central area of the cathedral is a little dodgy ... there is a crackland nearby .. so on that area you will find a lot of homeless and drug adicts.. you should be fine during daytime ... but truly avoid it at night ... the other places shown on the video are normal and safe
you guys are the type of guests that Us Brazilians will always wait to come back. So great your videos. Guys I wish you come back one day and enjoy once more Brazil. all the best.
Oh my goodness... did you really felt watched walking around Sé's Square? That place is always crowded and everyone feels like that, what makes even us residents unconfortable about that place is the considered number of homeless people who are always walking around there. I never saw any of them acting dangerously but we never know so it's good to pay attention. Considering as you were dressed, as long as you didn't show your camera around, I'd say that you would easily melt with the locals. São Paulo is a huge melting pot and any foreigner pass easily as a local. Still, it's always advised to be aware of your surrondings anywhere in Brazil ... after all, this is a developing country and street crime is a reality here. The key is to dress casually, don't carry cameras and jewelry when walking on the street and avoid run-down neighbourhoods located far from downtown. Downtown and neighbourhoods around are generally ok. As for the beer... in Brazil you can drink anywhere. It's not forbidden to drink on the streets, but you cannot drink while driving.
Rogerio Andrade we always try to blend in but in course in order to film these videos we do have to take the camera out from time to time. We just always try to be careful - Anna
Where you are staying, in the Jardins area, is overall very safe. Of course there are areas in the city where you wouldn`t feel comfortable but most visitors wouldn`t stay there. The centre of the city is much better than it was only around 5 years ago but still not the place you would want to walk around at night. If you`re from any large city in the U.S. you won`t find the safety issue much different, if anything possibly a bit better. Something most outsiders don`t know about S.P. is that it`s the food capital of South America and the good restaurants are the equal of anywhere else in the World.
My God is the best channel I've found in recent times. thank you UA-cam for recommending me. You guys are amazing. I live in São Paulo, I wanted to meet you when you were here ❤
I loved your video, generally Brazil is relatively safe, we just need to use common sense in the big cities but São Paulo is safe but the city Downton should be more careful, Welcome to Brazil whenever you want, we love Canada🇧🇷🇨🇦
Menor sempre bebeu e fumou no Brasil.
Effie thank you. It's about what we thought but in general we felt safe other than the one spot in the intro of this video. Brazil is something else! - Trevor
Eu sequer me senti com medo lá.
Actually, you where at bigger risk flashing your iPhone than your camera. We have a big problem with robbery in São Paulo Downtown, specially with cellphones. It's definitely NOT a good idea to expose your phones like that. It's sad, but it's true.
If you're still in São Paulo you should definitely visit hotel unique. It's a hotel that looks like a boat/ship. There is a bar/restaurant at the top where you have a stunning view at the city skyline during the evening. Enjoy!
I just loved the way you guys pronounced "Liberdade" (Japanese neighborhood) . Sounds funny to brazilians. The pronunciations is actually "li-ber-dah-di". I would like the opportunity to say that your video (and channel) is very nice and leaves all the silly stereotypes of Brazil (caipirinha, football, carnaval and Favelas) behind. Brazil is much more than that. Keep up the good job!!!
bro, thank you so much, as a social activist its wooooooonderful to see people not afraid of us, that always bothered me, even living in the us for 2 years, mexico couple months, and been to portugal and nortj africa in my work once a year or so, thank u sooo much bro... keep exploring.. i live in the south santa catarina, i live in the capital city florianopolis, which is an island, the magic island we call it.. best surf.. best beach.. and there are many many favelas of course, just like every state... its quebrada we call it, but favela too.. .. but not necessarily in the hills in mini-cities.. we have those bairros, ''morro'' its called. which is ''the hills'' in english but less than half only, most are in a straight street level neihbourhood or even in the beach they sell.. but completely peaceful, maybe 1 or 2 guys from the 15, 20, around the beaach, selling. only 1 or 2 of them has a pistol hidden somewhere maybe even ay his home hundred meters away.. you know.. its different.. thats it.. thats the most common tho.. we do really have some hellholes even I DONT, GO..unless i have to.. s, hills or areas around the neighboorhoods in the bridges... and im someone that lived, was raised, in a quebrada you know....but you see, drug flow is and the guys are so low profile that even my mom didnt know it was that much...i think even today if i ask she will probably deny it.. its a matter of respect and a little toughness, maybe a mental issue, haha, not sure how to say it.. mental tloughness... i think.. the way i see we are a country that could become one of the top 10 around the globe someday who knows.... the problem is enaquiality.. gaps.. giant ones... but as people we brazilians not many people need alot of things to live.. u know.. most brazilians really survive and enjoy life even in thoise situations.. so im proud of that.. we need little to survive.. the masses, not greedy, the opposite, but the high class has been getting bigger and controlling certain aspects for the last 40 years.. and beforre that almost 30 years of military dictaatorship.. which locked up politicians and traffickers.. robbers.. all together... and they formed a protest movement named falange vermelha.. that became the red command.. comando vermelho...and... in my city... fishermen here are a social group with almost political influence at the beach and the trading in the sea, the economy... fish and other stuff that type, represents 20 maybe 30 % of the city's PIB, we call it.. in english i forgot.. tourishm beeing 55 if i recall... and the third, guess what? dont say drug business, its not just like that...the answer should be something else... its different, peaceful, good vibes, there is of course crimes and violence, but it is stricly controlled both by the crime and the police, living in the south of the island in '''morro das pedras'', it means the stone hills, or the hills of stone , idk.. shipments are critical... so highways and bridges are veeeery good man... this being the 6th biggest tour point in brazil, 1st in the south.. i live in the neighboorhood, or bairro, canasvieiras, in a single apartment, small, but ok, clean, we dont need much, of course im young in a way.. im 28, this apartment, about 80-100 meters from the beach, the water, and i pay 360 a month, that would be 80 dollars , of course im still evolving, daily, in my work and life... haha, and my nation.. im very proud like tht, haha, americans would probably see me as a patriot... and i also consider myself that, but strangely, that was rare here, still is in some places.. depends.. i like to compare it with U.S like this, Rio, would be LA, other neighboorhoods around LA. Sao Paulo, would be like New York.. And my city Florianopolis or maybe some other turism goldmine in my state would be like Miami... hehe
Thank you for visiting my country and showing it to the world with really fair eyes!! Yeah, it is legal to drink outdoors and in the streets in Brazil, but that is not always a good thing, unfortunately. I'm happy you enjoyed your trip, and hope you can come back more times!!
Brazilian here. You can drink anywhere, don't worry. It's pretty common to have those sellers on the streets. Skol is one of the most common beers we have. Brahma has a better taste for me. The best Brazilian beer you can have, however, is Baden Baden (in my opinion, at least). You did right not showing your camera. We have one of the biggest crime rate in the world, so precaution is needed.
I'm glad we didn't take the camera out yes! You never know right? We really liked that beer but we'll keep an eye out for Brahma. Thanks for watching 😃- Trevor
Brazil has one of the biggest crime rates in the world, true. But Sao Paulo has the lowest inside Brazil, and is even safer than a lot of American cities like Chicago, DC, Miami, etc. It is quite terrible how Brazilians tend to have such a pessimistic view about all that has to do with the country. Vira lata syndrom for sure.
what a pride to say i'm brazilian 🇧🇷 always welcome you spoke very well about our country i was born in the state of são paulo i live in the great Campinas wonderful city i will wait for a visit I dream of going to other countries but only after meeting this magnificent country, beloved country🇧🇷✌👋🙌🏖🏜🏝🏕
Nice video and good content guys! Just one advice, I strongly recommend to keep your camera inside the bag during your visit in Sao Paulo's downtown, specifically nearby Catedral da Sé, it is not a safe place there.
HAHAHA guys you are crazy, I'm from São Paulo but for the last few years I'm leaving abroad. I need to say, even me when I was going to the old city I wasn't showing my Phone hahaha In that place you just gonna find the worst kind of people from my city. I'm glad that nothing happened to you guys. If you need some tips about nice places to go, restaurants, etc just let me know. Thanks for the video.
I live in California and every time I go to São Paulo I use my iPhone making videos and taking pictures of this beautiful city and I never had any problem ! In any big city like São Paulo of course you need to be careful ! I feel safe in São Paulo and love that vibrant megalopolis ❤️😊🇧🇷👌🏼
My heart almost stopped seeing you filming the beginning of this video in the middle of the square! Downtown can be pretty unsafe, unfortunaterly :/ I’m glad nothing happend though! I’m glad you did enjoy your experience in São Paulo!
The square of the cathedral itself is not dangerous, but it is very crowded. there are all kinds of people there because it is a cheaper shopping center, including many homeless people
You made a good point, the square is a bit neglected i would say but damm! There is shit loads of Brazilians trying hard to get that English reached out by saying the same old thing "ohhhhh its too dangerous, ohhhhh you got luck" Man that pisses me off. They try to look good samaritans to foreigners with the same annoying comments, these people never been our of the country so they dont know what big cities out there look like.
This church at the beginning of this video is beautiful (and that's coming from an atheist) the square outside the church is not exactly safe - not even for us from São Paulo - lots of pickpockets muggers and beggars hanging about
1. Not exactly safe to be hanging around anywhere downtown with big cameras or fancy electronics, especially the area you were at Sé Cathedral (our city's ground zero) - I'd advise tourists to be aware of suspicious looks and odd activities nearby. 2. I feel like São Paulo might have the largest community of every nation inside of it, there's too many people! The asian - mostly japanese - neighborhood is a nice place to visit and find things you don't usually find elsewhere here. 3. Please don't stop to film, chat, take pictures on narrow sidewalks. Just don't. LOL 4. Stick to tourists known spots, they're usually safer and have more people willing and able to help foreigners. If you wanna be more adventurous and meet some gems off the radar, go with trusworthy locals, preferably. 5. It's legal to drink alcohol in public spaces, but you might have to explain yourself to authorities passing by if you are doing it somewhat suspiciously - yeah, a bit controverse. Drinking alcohol is forbidden in public concessions, such as subways and bus stations - although some folks do it. 6. Paulista Av. is closed to trafic in Sundays, and it's awesome! Some people want to see this gone, but hopefully this is going to become tradition. 7. Food here is great, diverse and relatively cheap. Enjoy it wisely, and be careful because some places don't store it accordingly and you might get food poisoning.
You guys did the right call not showing off the camera in that part of the city. I'm from SP, and I can say that tourists can be very safe there. Just go with your guts and don't go to places that might see a little danger to you. It's a big city with big city problems. Besides that, I was so happy with your video. I'm living in the US and it filled my heart with love just to watch it. =)
Glad you both like my city Sao Paulo!!Currently I am live in London but once or twice a year I have a little break in Sao Paulo.Thank you for your nice videos and thougts about SP.Warm wishes for both.xxx
I believe you guys got the spirit of Brazil’s safety quite on point, which is a bit rare I might say. It’s not ~~unsafe~~ to walk around Praça da Sé, but it surely becomes so when you show off a nice phone and speak English so everyone can tell you’re not from here. Great video
I'm Brazilian and when I go to Sao Paulo I don't even get my cellphone when I'm walking on the street. I live in the interior of the country a city called Londrina, is in the state of Paraná and here I've been robbed and stolen 3 times, the city is much smaller than Sao Paulo so you think Sao Paulo must be much worse, but nothing ever happened when I visited the city. Probably when I'm in my city I walk less cautiously kkkk but nowhere is very safe around here.
Surtou demais 😒
I’m Brazilian and when I visited the cathedral I also felt a little unsafe, even having my phone out. People really do stare at you , so I don’t blame you guys.
I almost got robbed right outside the cathedral from the begging of the video because I had my phone out. Two guys followed us down into the subway after. Only place I didn’t feel safe in São Paulo though.
Hi guys! You're very courageous when you have filmed in the praça da Sé. It's one of most dangerous places in SP. you had luck nobody has tried steal your camera. I loved your videos and I have just followed you! Good luck and keep safe!
You did great not pulling out the camera in that region...I feel really uncomfortable when i have to go to that area!! Everywhere else I feel safe of course we all should be aware of our surroundings always but I think SP is a really nice place!!
Yes: nice move to keep a low profile in places like downtown São Paulo. And yes: is totally fine to drink in public in Brazil (actually I don't understand why it shouldn't be). São Paulo is so big I think it's a good idea to join the city tour tourist ride (I guess you might schedule it using the city website). It's a little bit corky but it covers all the 'must see' places for someone is not being advised by a local. Welcome to the wildest city in South America! :-)
Brazilians does look at people who is using camera or any electronics to warn yourselves about the danger to be stoled, mostly in downtown. Then take care next time, and yeah, it’s allowed to drink in public places and smoke as well.
Brazilian hotels are really nice to be honest. The staff are always great and polite and you always get lots of perks and free booze. The best part is that you can drink anywhere! São Paulo is ok ish safe, but I would recommend you to go to balneário Camboriú. Best place in Brazil and definitely similar to big cities like Vancouver, but with beaches haha
Brazilians are really comfortable with eye contact so, in the crowd, on the streets if you keep eye contact, people feel you are aware of your surroundings, and thieves prefer distracted victims.
Wow your editing skills is on point 😎 I felt like I was traveling there lmao. I also posted a Brazil’s beach travel vlog in my channel, and seeing your video just makes me want to continue and practice more my edition!! Whereas you go is better to follow your instinct, many places there are a lot to offer and have new experience after all. Gonna see your next videos
About japanese garden I will recommend two places: Ibirapuera Japanese garden it is beautiful and it is close to Avenida Paulista. The other option is Parque do Carmo because it has an amazing Cherry Blossom festival(but there is a specific date for you to get the whole festival and it is approximate 35 minutes using Uber from Paulista Avenue to Parque do Carmo).
Welcome to São Paulo. Unfortunately downtown has been forgotten. Beggars and little criminais are around. So you have to be careful with tour equipment. The rest of the city is much better and safer.
Do not worry, the Brazilian likes to see tourists, not being bad guys in general the Brazilian is very receptive and likes to see tourists in the city. In Brazil it is not forbidden to drink alcohol on the street, only driving.
It is perfectly legal to drink on the streets in São Paulo and in any other part of Brazil. You don't have to hide the can or whatever. But it is illegal to drink and drive (of course), so take care out there. São Paulo is not suuuuuper safe, don't low your guard especially at night, but you don't need to be over paranoic. Have a safe trip!
You litterally visited the worst possible sopt in the city center, tha Cathedral square (Praça da Sé). You should have gone to the historical skyscraper area such as Martinelli and Altino Arantes (Banespa) buildings, Municipal Theater, Republic Square and Italia building, and the historical train stations such as Luz and Julio Prestes station.
São Paulo Cathedral area is becoming a bit more dangerous due to the unfortunate growing number of homeless and drug addicts "living" there, however never heard of attacks or robbery over there. Regardless of where you are in the world just have common sense* as you guys had: always look around and check how locals behave. If you don't see a local dressing fancy, showing off expensive stuff, walking around alone, act the same and you should be fine. Also brazilians are very warm and welcoming so you can always ask for tips and directions that we'll be more than happy to help!
Sao Paulo is relatively safe during the day, when there's a lot of people around, otherwise you really shouldn't wander around too much. If you ever get robbed the police really won't do anything to help you, I've never seen anyone recover their goods after being robbed here, you might have a small chance to recover your car, but most likely it'll get dismantled before the cops even get your call. You can't really trust the cops during an emergency either, it'll take at least 5 min to get through their automated assistant, then from 1 to 15 minutes to find human help (if you're lucky, sometimes no one answers). If you're in a central area it'll take around 10~20 min for them to get there, but otherwise you're really better off running for your life buddy, might take from 20 up to 90 min for them to get there. Also, many police posts unofficially close at night and almost all of them close during holidays.
It's normal have a beer on the street or side walk. Can't drink beer, liquor, or any other kind alcohol inside public place like school, restorant, supermarket, building, store, goverment build, subway, bus, trens smoke cigarret. Mary joana only. I am playng.
Amazing videos... it's very good to see a foreigner sight over the place you always lived and see how amazing this city can be. (Already watched the pizza video... not doing in chronological order...)
Careful, don’t get your câmara in sight, lots of homeless downtown ,but most wont rob you, but there are robbers also ,so take care ,wise decision not to use câmara.
Liberdade it is no longer an exclusively Japanese neighborhood. Despite the name of the subway station today being Japão/Liberdade. It has many Korean, Chinese, Cambodian, Thai shops and restaurants. The correct name is "Bairro Oriental". Or "Oriental Neighborhood". The best Ramen house is The ASKA Restaurant. On Galvão Bueno Street, 466. But to enter you needed to waits on the line out side.
Sao Paulo state has first world homicide rates, lower than some states in the US> The main risk is to be mugged, especially in places like this one. I would say that square (and old downtown around it) is the worst public place in terms of safety you can find in the city, perhaps with exception of some favelas in the outskirts, where you won't go anyway. Any other place in the city is ten times safer.
You can drink anything, anywhere in the country, which is cool for drinkers and not so cool for people trying to avoid trouble. But unless you are at a cheap bar, at a bad neighborhood, after midnight, you won't find any problems.

It has been a long time since São Paulo's downtown area has deteriorated and kinda dangerous, mostly because of the junkies.
Só cool your vídeos, i am adicted, what is the Violet sunglass model,is It the Oakley frogskins?
No Brasil e permitido beber bebidas alcoólicas em tô país
Delightful Travellers you are being very crazy. It’s not safe, not safe not safe. This is Brazil.

I would just add to the other coments:
- You can drink alcohool anywhere in Brazil (maybe not inside churches), whenever you want.

@@DelightfulTravellers Wonderful music as usual.

Something most outsiders don`t know about S.P. is that it`s the food capital of South America and the good restaurants are the equal of anywhere else in the World.

santa catarina, i live in the capital city florianopolis, which is an island, the magic island we call it.. best surf.. best beach.. and there are many many favelas of course, just like every state... its quebrada we call it, but favela too.. .. but not necessarily in the hills in mini-cities.. we have those bairros, ''morro'' its called. which is ''the hills'' in english but less than half only, most are in a straight street level neihbourhood or even in the beach they sell.. but completely peaceful, maybe 1 or 2 guys from the 15, 20, around the beaach, selling. only 1 or 2 of them has a pistol hidden somewhere maybe even ay his home hundred meters away.. you know.. its different.. thats it.. thats the most common tho.. we do really have some hellholes even I DONT, GO..unless i have to.. s, hills or areas around the neighboorhoods in the bridges... and im someone that lived, was raised, in a quebrada you know....but you see, drug flow is and the guys are so low profile that even my mom didnt know it was that much...i think even today if i ask she will probably deny it.. its a matter of respect and a little toughness, maybe a mental issue, haha, not sure how to say it.. mental tloughness... i think.. the way i see we are a country that could become one of the top 10 around the globe someday who knows.... the problem is enaquiality.. gaps.. giant ones... but as people we brazilians not many people need alot of things to live.. u know.. most brazilians really survive and enjoy life even in thoise situations.. so im proud of that.. we need little to survive.. the masses, not greedy, the opposite, but the high class has been getting bigger and controlling certain aspects for the last 40 years.. and beforre that almost 30 years of military dictaatorship.. which locked up politicians and traffickers.. robbers.. all together... and they formed a protest movement named falange vermelha.. that became the red command.. comando vermelho...and... in my city... fishermen here are a social group with almost political influence at the beach and the trading in the sea, the economy... fish and other stuff that type, represents 20 maybe 30 % of the city's PIB, we call it.. in english i forgot.. tourishm beeing 55 if i recall... and the third, guess what? dont say drug business, its not just like that...the answer should be something else... its different, peaceful, good vibes, there is of course crimes and violence, but it is stricly controlled both by the crime and the police, living in the south of the island in '''morro das pedras'', it means the stone hills, or the hills of stone , idk.. shipments are critical... so highways and bridges are veeeery good man... this being the 6th biggest tour point in brazil, 1st in the south.. i live in the neighboorhood, or bairro, canasvieiras, in a single apartment, small, but ok, clean, we dont need much, of course im young in a way.. im 28, this apartment, about 80-100 meters from the beach, the water, and i pay 360 a month, that would be 80 dollars , of course im still evolving, daily, in my work and life... haha, and my nation.. im very proud like tht, haha, americans would probably see me as a patriot... and i also consider myself that, but strangely, that was rare here, still is in some places.. depends.. i like to compare it with U.S like this, Rio, would be LA, other neighboorhoods around LA. Sao Paulo, would be like New York.. And my city Florianopolis or maybe some other turism goldmine in my state would be like Miami... hehe

Brazil has one of the biggest crime rates in the world, true. Mineta is coming to Brazil?
*BOI*
Just don't. LOL

Scaremongering at it's best.
You did great not pulling out the camera in that region...I feel really uncomfortable when i have to go to that area!! Everywhere else I feel safe of course we all should be aware of our surroundings always but I think SP is a really nice place!!
Eu duvido kkkkk
Não é segura
Yes: nice move to keep a low profile in places like downtown São Paulo. And yes: is totally fine to drink in public in Brazil (actually I don't understand why it shouldn't be). São Paulo is so big I think it's a good idea to join the city tour tourist ride (I guess you might schedule it using the city website). It's a little bit corky but it covers all the 'must see' places for someone is not being advised by a local. Welcome to the wildest city in South America! :-)
Moacyr da Cruz Jr thanks for watching and for the great tips. We may just have a local helping us out soon in an upcoming video 😀 - Trevor
You guys are a lovely and positive couple, I loved!
Brazilians are really comfortable with eye contact so, in the crowd, on the streets if you keep eye contact, people feel you are aware of your surroundings, and thieves prefer distracted victims.
I would recommend to visit Ibirapuera Park. Beautiful, safe place, well organized, now its possible to get there by the Metro (line 5).
Love your videos guys, you are so cool and spontaneous, nice to know yours view about São Paulo, very certain as well.
Thank you! :)
Welcome to São Paulo. Unfortunately downtown has been forgotten. Beggars and little criminais are around. So you have to be careful with tour equipment. The rest of the city is much better and safer.
I ❤️ SP!!! 😎😍💪🇧🇷
Can't drink beer, liquor, or any other kind alcohol inside public
place like school, restorant, supermarket, building, store, goverment build, subway, bus, trens smoke cigarret. Mary joana only. I am playng.
Amazing videos... it's very good to see a foreigner sight over the place you always lived and see how amazing this city can be. (Already watched the pizza video... not doing in chronological order...)
Hope you're enjoy the entire series :) - Trevor
NO! Its not safe!
And no. you shouldn't take out your caemra at centro of São Paulo kkk.
Loving your videos!
Careful, don’t get your câmara in sight, lots of homeless downtown ,but most wont rob you, but there are robbers also ,so take care ,wise decision not to use câmara.
Sao Paulo's percentage of crime makes it safer than Los Angeles or Chicago, and equating to New York
Ah, they're don't accepts credit cards only money or checks. I've recommends the guiza dumplings are super special. See ya!
Sao Paulo state has first world homicide rates, lower than some states in the US>
The main risk is to be mugged, especially in places like this one. I would say that square (and old downtown around it) is the worst public place in terms of safety you can find in the city, perhaps with exception of some favelas in the outskirts, where you won't go anyway. Any other place in the city is ten times safer.
I was in Sao paolo a month ago... Beautiful city and beautiful country.
You can drink anything, anywhere in the country, which is cool for drinkers and not so cool for people trying to avoid trouble. But unless you are at a cheap bar, at a bad neighborhood, after midnight, you won't find any problems.
I hope you enjoyed Brazil and always come back.
