Dear Michael, just back from 3 days in the Pilanesburg National Park in South Africa. We visit around twice a year and I previously used my 70D. I Purchased the 90D in advance of this trip and spent some quality time on both your 90D Introduction and Wildlife Tutorials. Time well spent. I made all the menu adjustments you suggested. Thanks for all the great tips! :) Short version is results on the 90D are absolutely fantastic when used with the Canon 100-400 4.5-5.6 L Mk 2 lens. Images are sharp as a pin; colour and contrast are exceptional. When shooting birds at quite some distance, fully zoomed, I am able to crop the images substantially and still have a most acceptable result. The 70D was pretty good with this setup but the 90D is excellent. Great lens/body combination! When in the bush, I now leave my 18-135 kit lens on the 70D so the two rigs give me total coverage. I bought the EFS 10-22 back in 2011with my 550D and it has been one of my favourites. The only problem is the chromatic aberration but 90D can fix this. I upgraded to 90D and it is amazing!
Just for people who like to know.... I personally am very satisfied with my canon 70-300L, tamron 15-30 G2, tamron 10-24 hdl, and especially very sharp the tamron 70-200 G2..... I own the canon 100-400 II with extender and they are great...... just as great is my tamron 100-400....but I read mixed reviews.... thanks for all the afford you put into it!
I have a 28-135mm USM 3.5-5.6. I’ve had this lens since 2009 and have used it on my 40D and T7. So far pleased with it on my 90D. I will post some shots in the group.

I travel with the 10-18 WA Canon and the lens that lives on the 90D body is the F2.8 17-55 Canon, wow, what a perfect lens, shoot it at F 5.6 or less, float the ISO, the results are awesome. Oh, for video, the pancake 24 is the best I have found. Running the RAWS through DXO-3 after the trip is like going full frame when you post process.
I brought that lens 3 months ago and it’s insanely great and sharp. People are definitely sleeping on it. If your staying in the crop sensor lane then that lens is a must have
I’m in the process of starting an online clothing store, and I want to have amazing fashion photography in it. I recently got a 90D with an EF-S 18-135mm lens (it arrives today💃🏽). I, for sure, lack knowledge and experience when it comes to photography. However, I am determined to learn and love it. Just wondering if the lens that came with the camera are great for fashion photography. Help!
You'd have to go with the Tamron 24 -70 over the Canon: it's a no-brainer for price and image stabilization. Plus, the Tamron lenses are really well put together - not saying that the Canon ones aren't, but Tamron build quality is outstanding.
This is great, very helpful, Michael! And it confirms my experience with these Canon lenses: 18-135 STM, 55-250 STM, 18-55 f/4-5.6 STM, 70-300 IS USM II, and one you didn't mention, the wonderful 40mm f2.8 STM (fantastic lens!). I have the 15-85 also and it's a very nice lens, but I don't use it as much since getting the 18-135 STM. A little off the subject, but this is just an observation that really surprised me from doing many side by side comparisons. I have the 80d and SL2 and find the images from the SL2 to be so much better -- cleaner, smoother jpegs, more natural colors, less noise, more natural skin tones. I have the 6dII also, and the SL2 images come very close in overall quality and color. Side by side images from the SL2 and 80d, the SL2 is the clear winner. So I'm selling my 80d. I'll miss the 45 af points, but image quality is more important to me. Thanks again for this video!

I really don't see a point in getting a lot of expensive glass like the 2.8 canon zooms just to put them on a 90d, just get a 5d iv, they're on sale for 2k
Wonderful video! I'm so glad you put this together since some of the lenses that under performed are lenses I was thinking about buying for my m6 ii (presuming you would recommend the same lenses for both 90D and M6 ii)! One lens I'd be curious to get your opinion on is the Sigma 100-400mm. I've had mixed results on mine, getting nice images, but I find that the auto focus and continuous shot mode struggle a bit with this lens. Very nice image quality, however. In regard to the 18-35, the more I use it on my M6 ii, on occasion, it seems the auto focus can get a little off. Otherwise, still a great lens and is becoming my standard video lens. In regard to manual primes, I've had wonderful results with the Rokinon 85mm ef and the 10mm 2.8mm Rokinon designed for the m mount. Thanks for all the tips!

I own, besides the Canon 90D, the 10-18mm for vlogging, the 24mm pancake, the 50mm 1.8 and the 55-250mm for b-rolls and time lapses; I didn't want to get the 18-55mm because I was under the impression that it wasn't good enough. Do you think, with the lenses I already have, I'll be ok or shall I get the 18-55mm? Also I tested the 10-18mm in low light while vlogging (I travelled to Rome and I am currently editing the footage and I'll post it in a couple of days) and in spite of its F4.5 aperture the result is not so bad...do you think the Sigma 18-35mm F 1.8 would be a lot better?...maybe a little short when talking in front of it on a gorillapod while walking though. The 18-55mm works fine, but is not a top performer. There is a test I do I call the "extreme test" that is meant to prove two things. It proves the resolving power of the lens, which then also shows if it is better or worse than it would be on an older sensor. I found that it looked about the same on the 90D as it did on the 80D. So it works fine, it just isn't going to offer that punch you will get from a better lens. The 24mm F2.8 rocked in this test, as did the 55-250mm and the 50mm F1.8. For inexpensive lenses they did surprisingly well. If you can get it cheap, the 18-55mm will be ok (the STM version that is), but I wouldn't put more than 50 dollars into it. They are so easy to find used for almost nothing. Anything more than that I would think that it would be a better idea to get the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 DC OS HSM. Used I have seen them for less than 300 USD. The trouble with the 18-35mm is that it is not a stabilized lens, so for the "walk and talk" style vlog you will have shaky footage, plus 18mm might not be wide enough for what that. The 10-18mm would probably be the best lens for that.
HI Michael.. i am new to canon camera and got the 90D as this was rrecommended for Macro shooting, which is mainly what I shoot .,, I have been watching your videos, they have really helped me work my way around this brand new camera. My question is, when I have been practicing briefly over xmas my focus seems very limited to a minute area of a flower.. how do I bring the whole flower into focus and sharp? do I need to up the aperture to 5.6 and over as you mention? sorry, very new to this . I am trying to shoot in AV mode and avoiding dummy mode? I am using EFS 60mm Macro lens on the 90D ... is this one that is working okay?
Jo S . Your in luck with the 90d because it has focus bracketing. It takes multiple shots from one press focusing from front to back and you combine them with canon software and the result is a single image with everything in the image in focus. You would have to watch some youtube how to videos and experiment. You have an excellent lense and camera. You can also increase the aperture for a wider area in focus or move the flower further away and crop the image. Theres many macro instructional videos on UA-cam.
I recommend saving your money on the 50mm f/1.8 "nifty fifty." It's all the rage as a walk-around street photography lens, sure, but on a FULL-frame sensor, otherwise on an crop sensor (the 90D) you're actually shooting at an 80mm, and it doesn't perform as well as lenses at that portrait photography focal length, so it becomes neither a good portrait lens, nor a "50mm" "street photography" lens. Though it's a cheap $ lens and great to have for your DSLR FULL-frame camera you might also have in your bag, otherwise put that money towards another lens (if you're only shooting on an APS-C).
The Canon 85mm prime has a big problem. Canon did issue a firmware update for the 90D to compensate for it but that hasn't completely resolved it and the lens basically throws error 001 up constantly.
Hi Michael, I used my Canon M6 Markii, which have the same sensor as 90D, I use it with a Canon 70-210mm 3.5-4.5 lens(1992) combined with viltox speedbooster adapter and photos are damn sharp!! Iam trying now tih canon 24-85mm 3.5-4.5(1996) and same happens. This older lenses give me a lot of performance on my 32mp sensor I dont know if you can review it. Thanks in advance

Interesting. Sounds as though the Canon 100-400mm L IS will not really do on this camera and I'll need the Vii to be properly satisfied. Did not expect to change from RX10 iv but this has tempted me back to DSLR.
I see that both versions of the canon 24-105mm are on the not recommended list of lenses you published so I was a bit confused to see you recommend it here. Great video though 👍
Craig Carlson I have it and it’s ok. When the conditions are perfect it’s great, but it’s pretty much 50/50. Check out his Facebook group, I’ve put some of my shots on there.
When getting lenses for this camera, do you factor in the crop? So would a 24-70’s FOV be 24-70 or would It have a 1.6x crop making the field of view different ? Cheers
Now I’m nervous! I have a 50mm and the newer 70-300 which has given me good results on an M50 however I have been given the opportunity to get a barely used 90d. I wanted to get something more in proportion than my M50, particularly with a larger lens with having to use an adapter plus the bigger grip. I also got a Sigma 17-50 last year so am concerned it won’t work as well. I never realised that some lenses don’t t appear to work as well with certain cameras and my daughter is awaiting her 90d to also be able to use the sigma also. Worried that we’ve might not have made the best decision!! Is this a problem with all cameras favouring certain lenses?
Now I'm not sure it I should keep my 80D or upgrade to 90D? (Need both video and photos...) 80D better for fotos? 90D better for video? (120fps FHD and 4K)
I know the Canon 100-400 mk2 is great - or so I hear. But (and this is just my personal attitude) I would consider myself absolutely mad to buy such an expensive lens! I went with the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary instead which is less than half the price, has much more reach and plenty of sharpness. Even if I was swimming in gold I still might prefer the Sigma. I've never paid more than (the equivalent of) $1500 for any camera body or any lens, even with our higher European price level where taxes are always included. And I hope I never will. Warning! A little rant is coming up! (I'll try to be as gentle as I can). Your 16-35s, 24-70s and 24-105s are excellent choices, but in my opinion only for full frame cameras. They make very little sense on an APS-C body like the 90D. Not only because they're outside the budget of most APS-C shooters, but also because a 24-XX is supposed to be an all round zoom, going from a nice wide angle to a short or medium telephoto. But on a 90D the 24 mm is the equivalent of 38.4 mm which is awfully narrow and not wide angle at all. I used to own compact cameras where the widest angle was 38 mm, and it was incredibly frustrating! And between a 16-35 f4 and the amazing Sigma 18-35 F1.8 ... well, I don't think there's any contest.
I'm using the Canon 17-55mm 2.8 and looks good to me,but I'm not as technical and wise as Michael 😉 hopefully you have a chance to test this lens on the 90D

hi I have a 90d with 18 to 135 mm usm kit lens and find 90 % of the photos arent tac sharp they acceptable but am not impressed when looking at them at 100% the focus is rather soft, any advice to help fix
Hello Check your camera settings especially autofocus. One of the settings to turn off is the facial priority autofocus. Stop the lens down to f/8, the sweet spot for most lenses. Use the histogram to check your exposure in live view, which has better focal points. Use ND filters when outside and it’s sunny. Adjust your exposure accordingly. Keep your ISO under 6,400 for sharper photos. If shooting inside in low light, live view, external flash (bounce), keep your iso at 6,400 and under. Shoot with the prime STM lenses - sharper glass 50mm STM 24mm STM 40mm STM Just continued trial & error. Take notes on the photos that come out well. Make small adjustments from there. I’m a work in progress myself and I surely don’t know it all. I hope my experiences help. Most humbly

Hello I looking to purchasing the EF 24-70mm f/2.8 USM L II. I also have the EF 24-105 f/4 USM L. This lens has been hit & miss for me. The 90D likes f/2.8 and faster lenses. I’ve used the EF 50mm f/1.8 USM & 50mm f/1.4 in low light. Both are awesome and I actually prefer the STM 50mm. The f/2.8 should work well with you for your wedding work. If you can setup some additional non-intrusive lighting, that will help. My suggestion Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 OS (is) AF Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 AF/IS USM
@@sayaksamajdar2979 I've a friend using the Canon 100-400 v2 and loving it. OTOH, I bought the Tamron 150-600 G2 and am very pleased. I do pull it in a bit to 550 for best sharpness.
Michael I have a question. I upgraded last year when my 10 year old Rebel died. I thought I did enough research but am thinking now I’m over my head with the canon 90d. I wanted it for taking soccer & lax pics of my son & friends in high school. My lens which cost me a fortune is the 70-200mm 2.8. I noticed you didn’t mention it it your video. Is this not a good fit for the 90d?

However, I do own a 90D and I am on a budget because of saving for new lenses but I'm looking at getting into landscape and astro on a more serious level and I wondered if anyone could recommend a lens for this type of shooting. I have been saving my pennies for a Canon 24-70 2.8 ii L lens but Im also thinking of a lens that gives a 1.4 or 1.8 up to a 2.8. I watched the video for the lens for the 90 D what are your thoughts on the EF 2X Extender paired with the EF 100-400 mm f/4.5-5.6L II? Or would the 1.4 Extender be better?
To have spent thousands on lenses over the years and to see that they are no longer any good with the new cameras is a tremendous bummer. I have the 10-22 28-300 and 100-400 which were not cheap, now they are has beens. Makes me want to blow them all up.
that's annoying, i have the 10-18, the 18-135, the50 1.8 and its great but the lense i use the most is my tamron 90mm macro and its having trouble with the autofokus in live view so i can't use focus bracketing.

Just bought a Canon 90D and you said the lens 10-18mm is better than 10-22mm. However i read the review for 10-18mm is much worst than 10-22mm for the real estate photos. I got confuse. I have a few lenses I use on the 90D but by far the best pair for me is the 90D with Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art DG. Stunning results.

Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 lens was awesome back in the day, had it on my Canon 80D and worked pretty good.

24 mm f/2.8 STM is a good lens and it is cheap. It is sharper than the kit lens.
Mike, you are spot on about the Tamron 18-270. Even other Canon bodies do not fair well with this lens. Good review!

The 15-85 is a great option ...or was. Is not yet in production? My couple has one and is excelent in versatillity.

Buy a Pentax K3 iii it has IBIS which 90D doesn't have. Overall K3 iii is better. Also weather sealed.

I own, besides the Canon 90D, the 10-18mm for vlogging, the 24mm pancake, the 50mm 1.8 and the 55-250mm for b-rolls and time lapses; I didn't want to get the 18-55mm because I was under the impression that it wasn't good enough. Do you think, with the lenses I already have, I'll be ok or shall I get the 18-55mm? Also I tested the 10-18mm in low light while vlogging (I travelled to Rome and I am currently editing the footage and I'll post it in a couple of days) and in spite of its F4.5 aperture the result is not so bad...do you think the Sigma 18-35mm F 1.8 would be a lot better?...maybe a little short when talking in front of it on a gorillapod while walking though. Thanks for your videos, always very useful and informative.
The newest 18-55 seems ok. The sigma is sharper, and wider aperture, but doesn’t auto focus as well as the 10-18 and is more expensive
The 18-55mm works fine, but is not a top performer. There is a test I do I call the "extreme test" that is meant to prove two things. It proves the resolving power of the lens, which then also shows if it is better or worse than it would be on an older sensor. I found that it looked about the same on the 90D as it did on the 80D. So it works fine, it just isn't going to offer that punch you will get from a better lens. The 24mm F2.8 rocked in this test, as did the 55-250mm and the 50mm F1.8. For inexpensive lenses they did surprisingly well.
If you can get it cheap, the 18-55mm will be ok (the STM version that is), but I wouldn't put more than 50 dollars into it. They are so easy to find used for almost nothing. Anything more than that I would think that it would be a better idea to get the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 DC OS HSM. Used I have seen them for less than 300 USD. The trouble with the 18-35mm is that it is not a stabilized lens, so for the "walk and talk" style vlog you will have shaky footage, plus 18mm might not be wide enough for what that. The 10-18mm would probably be the best lens for that.

HI Michael.. i am new to canon camera and got the 90D as this was rrecommended for Macro shooting, which is mainly what I shoot .,, I have been watching your videos, they have really helped me work my way around this brand new camera. My question is, when I have been practicing briefly over xmas my focus seems very limited to a minute area of a flower.. how do I bring the whole flower into focus and sharp? do I need to up the aperture to 5.6 and over as you mention? sorry, very new to this . I am trying to shoot in AV mode and avoiding dummy mode? I am using EFS 60mm Macro lens on the 90D ... is this one that is working okay?
Jo S . Your in luck with the 90d because it has focus bracketing. It takes multiple shots from one press focusing from front to back and you combine them with canon software and the result is a single image with everything in the image in focus. You would have to watch some youtube how to videos and experiment. You have an excellent lense and camera. You can also increase the aperture for a wider area in focus or move the flower further away and crop the image. Theres many macro instructional videos on UA-cam.

I recommend saving your money on the 50mm f/1.8 "nifty fifty." It's all the rage as a walk-around street photography lens, sure, but on a FULL-frame sensor, otherwise on an crop sensor (the 90D) you're actually shooting at an 80mm, and it doesn't perform as well as lenses at that portrait photography focal length, so it becomes neither a good portrait lens, nor a "50mm" "street photography" lens. Though it's a cheap $ lens and great to have for your DSLR FULL-frame camera you might also have in your bag, otherwise put that money towards another lens (if you're only shooting on an APS-C).
Looking for sharp details shooting car photography, what would you recommend out of that group? Maybe the 18-135mm?
18-135 is a good all round zoom, but it's not the sharpest.

My editor put the wrong f stop in and I didn’t catch it, my mistake. It’s f4. Same with the macro lenses but we can edit that out
Correct, but the Canon EF-S 35 mm F2.8 Macro STM works fine. Unfortunately it was discontinued only 4 years after its release.
The Canon 85mm prime has a big problem. Canon did issue a firmware update for the 90D to compensate for it but that hasn't completely resolved it and the lens basically throws error 001 up constantly.

I used my Canon M6 Markii, which have the same sensor as 90D, I use it with a Canon 70-210mm 3.5-4.5 lens(1992) combined with viltox speedbooster adapter and photos are damn sharp!! Iam trying now tih canon 24-85mm 3.5-4.5(1996) and same happens. This older lenses give me a lot of performance on my 32mp sensor

Interesting. Sounds as though the Canon 100-400mm L IS will not really do on this camera and I'll need the Vii to be properly satisfied. Did not expect to change from RX10 iv but this has tempted me back to DSLR.
I see that both versions of the canon 24-105mm are on the not recommended list of lenses you published so I was a bit confused to see you recommend it here. Great video though 👍

When getting lenses for this camera, do you factor in the crop? So would a 24-70’s FOV be 24-70 or would It have a 1.6x crop making the field of view different ?

You apply the 1.6 crop which gives you 38.4-112mm.
Why doesn't diffraction show up in my menu. Have tried with both Manual and Program mode selected with a Canon Lens that is recognized.
Now I’m nervous! I have a 50mm and the newer 70-300 which has given me good results on an M50 however I have been given the opportunity to get a barely used 90d. I wanted to get something more in proportion than my M50, particularly with a larger lens with having to use an adapter plus the bigger grip. I also got a Sigma 17-50 last year so am concerned it won’t work as well. I never realised that some lenses don’t t appear to work as well with certain cameras and my daughter is awaiting her 90d to also be able to use the sigma also. Worried that we’ve might not have made the best decision!! Is this a problem with all cameras favouring certain lenses?
Now I'm not sure it I should keep my 80D or upgrade to 90D? (Need both video and photos...) 80D better for fotos? 90D better for video? (120fps FHD and 4K)
I know the Canon 100-400 mk2 is great - or so I hear. But (and this is just my personal attitude) I would consider myself absolutely mad to buy such an expensive lens! I went with the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary instead which is less than half the price, has much more reach and plenty of sharpness. Even if I was swimming in gold I still might prefer the Sigma. I've never paid more than (the equivalent of) $1500 for any camera body or any lens, even with our higher European price level where taxes are always included. And I hope I never will.
Warning! A little rant is coming up! (I'll try to be as gentle as I can).
Your 16-35s, 24-70s and 24-105s are excellent choices, but in my opinion only for full frame cameras. They make very little sense on an APS-C body like the 90D. Not only because they're outside the budget of most APS-C shooters, but also because a 24-XX is supposed to be an all round zoom, going from a nice wide angle to a short or medium telephoto. But on a 90D the 24 mm is the equivalent of 38.4 mm which is awfully narrow and not wide angle at all. I used to own compact cameras where the widest angle was 38 mm, and it was incredibly frustrating!
And between a 16-35 f4 and the amazing Sigma 18-35 F1.8 ... well, I don't think there's any contest.
I'm using the Canon 17-55mm 2.8 and looks good to me,but I'm not as technical and wise as Michael 😉 hopefully you have a chance to test this lens on the 90D
i have the 17-55 too, but have the feeling that some shots are a bit soft. Still testing it out though

hi I have a 90d with 18 to 135 mm usm kit lens and find 90 % of the photos arent tac sharp they acceptable but am not impressed when looking at them at 100% the focus is rather soft, any advice to help fix

Check your camera settings especially autofocus. One of the settings to turn off is the facial priority autofocus.
Stop the lens down to f/8, the sweet spot for most lenses.
Use the histogram to check your exposure in live view, which has better focal points.
Use ND filters when outside and it’s sunny. Adjust your exposure accordingly.
Keep your ISO under 6,400 for sharper photos.
If shooting inside in low light, live view, external flash (bounce), keep your iso at 6,400 and under.
Shoot with the prime STM lenses - sharper glass
50mm STM
24mm STM
40mm STM
Just continued trial & error. Take notes on the photos that come out well. Make small adjustments from there. I’m a work in progress myself and I surely don’t know it all. I hope my experiences help.

I looking to purchasing the EF 24-70mm f/2.8 USM L II. I also have the EF 24-105 f/4 USM L. This lens has been hit & miss for me. The 90D likes f/2.8 and faster lenses. I’ve used the EF 50mm f/1.8 USM & 50mm f/1.4 in low light. Both are awesome and I actually prefer the STM 50mm. The f/2.8 should work well with you for your wedding work. If you can setup some additional non-intrusive lighting, that will help.

I wanted it for taking soccer & lax pics of my son & friends in high school. My lens which cost me a fortune is the 70-200mm 2.8. I noticed you didn’t mention it it your video. However, I do own a 90D and I am on a budget because of saving for new lenses but I'm looking at getting into landscape and astro on a more serious level and I wondered if anyone could recommend a lens for this type of shooting. I have been saving my pennies for a Canon 24-70 2.8 ii L lens but Im also thinking of a lens that gives a 1.4 or 1.8 up to a 2.8. I have been looking at the Rokinon but always good to gather the opinion of others who may have tried or are doing this genre of shoot. In advance thanks for your help.

1.4x is always better.
To have spent thousands on lenses over the years and to see that they are no longer any good with the new cameras is a tremendous bummer. I have the 10-22 28-300 and 100-400 which were not cheap, now they are has beens. Makes me want to blow them all up.
that's annoying, i have the 10-18, the 18-135, the50 1.8 and its great but the lense i use the most is my tamron 90mm macro and its having trouble with the autofokus in live view so i can't use focus bracketing.

However i read the review for 10-18mm is much worst than 10-22mm for the real estate photos. I got confuse. What is the best lens for my 90D, this is my first full frame camera and I’m expecting the best result for my photos.
