From "Works Volume One- 1977" (at the Olympic Stadium Montreal)
Keith Emerson: Yamaha GX1 polyphonic synthesizer
Greg Lake: 8-string bass
Carl Palmer: percussion, drums
"Fanfare for the Common Man" is a 20th-century American classical music work by American composer Aaron Copland. The piece was written in 1942 for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra under conductor Eugene Goossens. It was inspired in part by a famous speech made earlier in the same year where vice president Henry A. Wallace proclaimed the dawning of the "Century of the Common Man". Several cover versions have been made and fragments of work has appeared in many subsequent US and British cultural productions, such as in the musical scores of movies.
Copland's fanfare was used in 1977 by British rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer on the album Works Volume 1. The track became one of the band's biggest hits when an edited version was released as a single that year. It peaked at No. 2 in the UK. Keith Emerson had long been an admirer of Copland's American style, previously using Copland's Hoedown on the band's Trilogy album in 1972.
In a BBC Radio interview, Copland relayed his reaction to the piece:
"Interviewer: Just before I left London, I heard a piece of music of yours, Fanfare for the Common Man, which had been taken by a rock group Emerson, Lake & Palmer. How do you feel about that?
Copland: Well, (laughs) of course it's very flattering to have one's music adopted by so popular a group, and so good a group as Emerson, Lake & Palmer. A lot depends on what they do with what they take, and naturally since I have a copyright on such material, they're not able to take it without my permission; so that in each case, where I have given my permission, there was something that attracted me about the version that they perform, which made me think I'd like to allow them to release it. Of course, I always prefer my own version best, but (laughs) what they do is really around the piece, you might say, rather than a literal transposition of the piece, and they're a gifted group. In that particular case, I allowed it to go by because when they first play it, they play it fairly straight and when they end the piece, they play it very straight. What they do in the middle, I'm not sure exactly how they connect that with my music but (laughs) they do it someway, I suppose. But the fact that at the beginning and the end it really is the Fanfare for the Common Man gave me the feeling I ought to allow them to do it as they pleased.
Interviewer: I know your original work is just over three minutes and Emerson, Lake & Palmer have managed to turn it into a nine minute work.
Copland: (Laughs) Exactly, well, it's those six minutes in the middle...(laughs)"

One of my dad's funeral songs, he was taken away 28th December. ELP were his favourite band and now they are mine. RIP Dad and Keith. ❤️
My dad passed away around the same time. Miss him so very much. Sorry for your loss.
So sorry Lauren, I loved my father and miss him badly too. He died suddenly, 3 days after his June 21'st birthday in 2015. I still dream about fishing with and just talking to him. You'll see yours again.
did they headbang to this song? Seems quite heavy for a funeral.
Noone cares about your loss's! Get over it softie!...I appreciate that yours had great taste in music.. Quit crying Wimps and move on!
An greg
sometimes you forget how great it was in the 70's & 80's. When things were new. Fresh. Raw. I miss it
You can still find fresh and raw music today if you search past the top ten musicians. Trust me on this. Look up King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. They are among the most unique bands I have listened to. They released 5 albums last year(all of them were surprisingly excellent and very distinct from each other, which shows how good they areusing nothing but microtonal instruments called Flying Microtonal Banana, just last year. It is one of my favorite bands, right up there with ELP themselves(of course, ELP obviously wins as my favorite based on my profile pic :D). A more popular band that you've probably heard of that is definitely worth checking out is called Gorillaz. Like ELP, they diversified their musical abilities so that they could be versatile. If it weren't for Damon Albarn's voice(he was also in a band called Blur, which is awesome as well), you would have no clue that some Gorillaz songs were written by the same band, especially with how they combine hiphop and rap with alternative rock, folk music, techno music, and the way they utilize a featured artist on a track(okay, Humanz was kind of a let down, but it doesn't tarnish how talented this band is). Also, A Perfect Circle is releasing a new album soon(hopefully the music is better than that album cover). I could name many more. I love music from the 70s and 80s, but abandoning hope for modern music and future music is not worth it. I promise that you will always find new classics if you look enough, and you may even stumble across something that might become a favorite of yours. Cheers, friend.
Now this is what a music video should look like. Just performing the music!
I wonder if this was basically a sound check for concert in that huge Canadian stadium. Great song, one of my favorites.
Sad, so sad. Nothing to say, just sadness!
RIP MR. Emerson!
His music lives on. Thanks Keith RIP🎹
+tarkus041960 KEITH IS LIFE ETERNAL SOUL TANKS
+virgorouge Where can I find your song?
I agree. I saw him a few times in concert. Even in a little place in Bay Shore on Long Island in the early 80's. Just sad. :(
Carl Palmer, with Guests guitarist Steve Hackett (Genesis) and Mark Stein (Vanilla Fudge) on keyboards and vocals performed a tribute to Keith Emerson this past Friday in Miami. Jo Hackett told me that it went very well. She said it was emotional remembering Keith, of course.
OMG, RIP Keith Emerson. You were THE best piano player ever. He played it all - classical, jazz, blues, rock, pop, etc. and he played every kind of keys. He made the MOOG as the new sound for rock and roll. RIP to the very best. And the stupid hall didn't vote them in yet? They aren't worth getting into. They're the Hall of Shame.
An also rip greg lake
RIP, Keith Emerson. No man, common or no, hath a greater fanfare.
+Chris Brisson Good one buddy !!
And greg lake
I start to play piano on 1977 to copy him.
Thanks , Master.
These guys were so talented. I could never get over each of their individual skills. Innovators who brought so much more than quick little 3 minute jingles for a quick little buck. Thank goodness for their recordings. They will surely live on forever. And long live Carl Palmer who continues to rock on.
This is the music that helped shape my character, inspire my dreams, forge my spirit. I remember lying on my bed in my room with this and other ELP albums on my stereo, all playing "on eleven," being completely blown away by their genius and mastery of the medium and their instruments. After them, the bar had been raised, and all others faded in comparison. They pretty much ruined me for any other kind of music, well into my 20's, lol! I once met Keith's manager at a party in Hollywood, and the first thing I said to him is, "If I met Keith Emerson today, I would ask him to marry me." His response: "He would probably say yes!" Oh, if only!!! Goodbye, Keith, I am so sad that you felt there was no other way. I am in tears watching this. How devastating it must have been that you so loved and adored and lived and breathed and existed and encompassed music that you just could not bear losing your ability to create and perform it. Prayers for your soul.
Jo said they filmed it and Carl has said there will be a DVD. I loved ELP and especially visionary composer and remarkable keyboard player, moog master Keith Emerson.
+veronica cougar Well said.
Veronica Cougar. Love your comment on ELP FANFARE . . . ! You managed to put into words what I feel! Thank you and many happy listening moments to you !
Sherry Grimm Now, Greg Lake is gone. "The world of music bows its head to acknowledge the passing of one of the greats." Steve Hackett Dec 9, 2016
Cara Veronica Cougar. Você é uma pessoa de bom gosto musical !! ELP é excelente parabéns para você!!! "ars longa vita breve" !!! mais uma vez parabéns para você Verônica !!! "RIP KEITH EMERSON AND GREG LAKE".
A friend of mine designed the covers of Pictures and Tarkus. I was in his house and he popped to the shops and I answered the phone. Explained Will was out and asked who was calling, "Keith," Keith who? says me, "Keith Emerson," AHHHHHH an all time hero and all I could manage was, "I'll tell Will you called." Exceptional talent and will live on through his music.
To say we were blessed to hear their music, some of us moreso, to have seen them perform live, is putting it mildly. Keith's talent was a gift from the gods. Brilliance. Genius. The consummate performer. These aren't exaggerations. These are simple facts. Barely scratching the surface of how great he was. Never again will we see or hear such genius on the keyboards. This news absolutely sucks.
I'm afraid to report the sad passing of Keith Emerson. One of progressive rock's brightest lights, which sadly has left us in a darker world without him.
I wish you well...
RIP Keith Emerson :'( Thank you for sharing your music with us, you were in a class by yourself. You will never be forgotten.
Was at that incredible show, 37 years ago tomorrow :-) A great experience...
We miss you already, Keith. R.I.P.
So many mixed emotions... So many memories... ELP was a huge part of the soundtrack of my teenage years. Remembering Keith Emerson and the joy he brought.

That 8 sting bass is very cool, indeed. Greg Lake you are the man.

Carl Palmer, with Guests guitarist Steve Hackett (Genesis) and Mark Stein of Vanilla Fudge on keyboards and vocals performed a tribute to Keith Emerson this past Friday in Miami. I am told by an attendee that it went very well. She said of it was emotional remembering Keith, of course. She and her husband knew him personally. I'm grateful to all who participated to remember Keith so joyously through music, dance and visual media. I loved Keith and his music with ELP. They performed Pictures for and Exhibition and Fanfare for the Common Man along with other selections.
We'll miss him so much... RIP Keith.
9.48 minutes of magic, and history rolled into a classic.
Was too young when this song was released by ELP......have not listened to this in my childhood......but these days, I just can't stop listening to this......Listened to this umpteen number of times only wanting to play it again & again.!!
Incredible power and majesty! Thank you Keith!!!
Because these fellows are so talented they transitioned out of and back into Copland rather seamlessly while taking the original excitement to a new and interesting place.
Rest in Peace Greg. Thanks for the music in my life.
I miss Keith so much. I can't stand thinking that I'll never get to see one of my favorite bands all together. Rest in peace, Keith. 💚

I absolutely adore this Music, this Video.....I saw and heard ELP live a Long time ago, when I was Young in Switzerland......Absolutely outstanding british Broadsword
Rock!
I'm no music guru but the harmony in this soundtrack is epic. We will probably never hear the this kind of music written again in our life time & for generations to come for that matter. With the passing of two great musicians of this band they cross over into the threshold to eternity and the other great musicians over the years, the music they left behind are echos of the life they once had here in this world. All I can do in the last few weeks of this crap 2016 is tip my hat, raise my glass and say thanks.
Thank you Keith R.I.P.
What a sad year. First Keith Emerson then Greg Lake. My best friend loved this album when it came out. By 79 I had to have my own copy. RIP both of you.
yes! every sad. new today, ELP made1977 great year, and thanks for the up load RIP Keith...great times
J'ai assisté à ce spectacle à l'été 1977. Mon premier à vie. Mémorable! ELP était exclusivement accompagné par un orchestre symphonique.
A good chunk of the old childhood gone christ I have to hang on to some of it! R.I.P. MR. Emerson ,thanks .
I was fortunate enough to see them place this live, 23 rows back center stage 1977 Boston Garden
The Mad Genius on keys, the Perfectionist on percussion and the Musicians- Musician holding down the fort on bass…

Seriously the feeling inside your body as this builds up is sensational, they should play this and the theme to Top Gun to patients in hospitals to help them heal.
This really takes me back - what an amazing group. Vale Keith Emerson - Superstar.
BIG Analogue Synthesizers, Alembic 8-string bass guitar and the stainless steel drums of Mr Carl Palmer. No wonder they sounded so bloody huge...
Los Angeles DE la Luz Y Amor Te Cúran en la DIVINA Exencia de tu ALMA ETERNA .......LA VIDA ÉS Y Siempre Será de por SIEMPRE ....Que Te CUres Pronto Y Sigas Tocando desde el CIELO
Love the music..love the video. It doesn't get much better than this folks... I would have loved to have been there when this took place.
This piece of sensational music came out when I was 20, 38 years later it is still sensational and never fail to listen to it every coupe of weeks to think of the good days of music.
*RIP Keith*, moog wizard, founder of legendary ELP Emerson, Lake & Palmer. We'll miss you.
Rest In Peace Keith Emerson 😭
Your musical genius, Keith, has already dug a furrow in the legend of rock music, that many will struggle hard not to recognize him.
R.I.P. and thanks for your music
One of their best pieces. Freaking fantastic!!
greatness we will never see again in our lifetime
Requiescat in pace, Keith Emerson
in the US, it was used as the theme to "CBS Sports Spectacular" in 1979-1980, replacing what was previously used which was "Fire on High" by the Electric Light Orchestra.
Fantastic from 00.00 to 03.30 and from then on, well, it gets even better.
this song was blasted through the speakers while I was camping at the Rock and bike show in Yorkshire I wasn't even mad that it was early in the morning because it was such an amazing song
This is a monumental piece of music transformed into a contemporty format
What a sad year for ELP! We lost E and L in 2016. RIP Greg Lake, you have gone but never be forgotten......
This song, music, musicians completely takes my breath away. It's like music like this can only exist in Heaven and we get to hear it!!! THANK YOU, A THOUSAND THANKS ! 😍😍😍
I remember the seventies, I was a little kid, this music changed my life!!!.......
Choked with tears. Keith was a major influence on my musical taste. RIP, Mr E.
And messer L
For you students of music out there- Greg Lake's bass line here, like most of his stuff, is deceptively complex. Lots of mini-licks and embellishments on the end of each phrase, all musically brilliant, and well thought out, as are the one-note sections. That stuff really makes a piece pleasing to the ear, or not. Also his sense of timing is very rare.
I attended the concert for this rehearsal from which Works was recorded it was an epic concert and this was one of the many highlights
I was at this show. This was played on their lightbulb array in a 1970s version of a giant TV during intermission. Notice the white bars behind Carl. I think those were standing room spots - no seats. This was recorded as the show was late August and you can see them wearing hats and breathing steam. Possibly recorder early morning? It was during this intermission that we moved from our seats in the far reaches and got within 50 feet of the stage.
First saw it when I was sixteen in seventy seven, forty years
ago. Covered my mouth with the palm of my hand and didn’t blink for four
minutes; watched again with the same response.
This remembers me of a great friend who introduced me to the music of ELP, Supertramp, Genesis and so much more bands.
Keith Emerson is listening to this song in heaven....
Rest in Peace keyboard god.
RIP KEITH.
Rest in peace Keith... in our memory your keyboards lines... Great job, great man, a lucky man!!!
Ditto for greg
RIP to a true giant of the 20th century music landscape
Keith made some of the most memorable music and was a player of immense talent, skill and a showman supreme
Unbelievably sad he's gone
Wonderful instrumental
Looks bloody cold there too - I've been there and saluted ELP when there 😀
Fantastic indeed
I saw ELP multiple times in the 1970's and again when they reformed in the 1990's If they ever play again go see them. If not the LP's have some great moments especially the 1970's 3 LP live album "Welcome Back My Friends to the that Never Ends.. ELP Live. .
Though this is searingly incredible, there is one thing missing.
The COMPLETE recording of this performance.
I have seen it only once, and it is superb, it shows Carl walking off, after the performance is done, and in the background, a stadium(?) worker walking around in the background, behind Carls left shoulder, a couple of levels above him.
Though it's not ímportant' to the performance, that vision does add to the overall feeling, it was, and still is, of those times.
you gotta give these guys credit for doing a sound check in that kind of weather!
Never quite got ELP but a fantastic keyboard player, such a sad end RIP
What a tune. how would anyone ever forget hearing this! moves me to my soul!
oh my look how young they were!! What am i saying-how young was i?!! Love them all forever!✌💔👯
I had a Yamaha keyboard, but was smaller than Keith Emerson's Yamaha. When I saw this video for the first time I got shocked by this enormous synth!!!
Agustín León ".... then the largest and most elaborate stage, sound, and lighting system to date in rock - all 36 tons of it!"... from the liner notes in the Brain Salad Surgery CD.
Agustín León This was a predecessor of the CS-80. Yamaha only made a few and it was ridiculously expensive--more than a house. I think Emerson was one of the few who used one.
geoffk777 I'm pretty sure that John Paul Jones was another owner of that Yamaha. You can see playing Kashmir with it.
Agustín León Stevie has one too :-)
+geoffk777 Yamaha GX1. I believe they were £25.000 at the time or $60.000. in 1973, the price of a very nice house.
A man, a legend. Thank you for your music mister Emerson! RIP!
Still get chills every time I hear this.
Another sad day in the music world. RIP Keith.
DAAAAAAMMMMM!!!!! ok heres what you need to do. put in your headfones... turn up volume to 100...and just imagine yourself walking onstage with this playing.... and the crowd goes wiiiilld. wwoww
R.I.P. Keith Emerson and Greg Lake
Lost both in the same year. Emerson, suicide. Lake, cancer. All 3 brought up with training in classical music. Even Palmer took classical percussion growing up.
Cara Perpétua, nós como americanos: você no México e eu no Brasil gostamos do Emerson Lake and Palmer!!! Música europeia de altíssimo valor!! Parabéns pelo seu excelente bom gosto musical. Deus fique com você e sua família. "RIP KEITH EMERSON AND GREG LAKE". Acredito que algum maestro/arranjador poderá fazer um bom trabalho para orquestra. Um abraço!!!
Importante falar que o álbum "WELCOME BACK MY FRIENDS TO THE SHOW THE NEVER ENDS" foi produzido por Greg Lake! Outro abraço.
Desculpe Carolita! Pensei que seu nome era Perpétua.
Keith Emerson and ELP met with Copeland to perform and record his music. I have a rare ELP with remixes where you can hear Copland say " play it". Keith emerson pushed the musical boundaries and was a mentor also for myself . Thanks Keith
RIP Keith. We never forget your great support for Japan.
1st record i ever bought, still love it Rip Greg
Your brilliant music and playing lives on. Vale Keith.
Yehh ... RIP ... by the way he left for us such a great pearl ... his wonderfful musical work
Thank you Keith Emerson for great music such as this.
Deeply deeply sad. Not prepared for that. RIP Keith
Just came across this video ELP in 1977 Olympic stadium Montreal played in sub zero. This is just Brilliant
Performance unequalled by anyone
One of the greatest pieces of music, performed by one of the greatest bands ever, with the (for me!) greatest keyboarder of all times! I wish I had the possibility to watch this live!
