CYC Gen 4 - Come on CYC! Show us the High Power!

  • This is a look at the CYC Gen 4 release video. I am disappointed that its just a puff piece and contains no real information in it. I would like to see how the motor sounds in comparison to previous generations. Some hard data on temperatures as well as distances it was ridden for. A CYC demo bike that is built to handle 6 KW of power. What is shown is something that could be done on any Bosch or Shimano Powered bike. Love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Are you considering getting a Gen 4 motor? What frame? Will you be running it at 6kw.

    I'm really glad you're calling out cyc on these issues. I came close to buying an x1 pro several times. But i read through the forums and FB groups and see tons of issues people have with them. I'll stick with my 72v BBSHD for now. It's been bulletproof pushing 72v for well over a year and I'm not gentle with it at all.

    I agree, 100% with your comments on this video. CYC has a tendency to infrequently release these highly polished Hollywood blockbuster videos, which is not what we are looking for. Release basic videos, frequentlyaddressing questions from their customers. I left a comment on their Photon promo video telling them that we want to know about the repairability of the motor. I got over a dozen thumbs up, and CYC has never addressed that question.

    I guess I am going to be the crash test dummy for the the cyc pro gen 4. I am a london bike courier riding the central london circuit on a highly customised omnium v3 electric cargo bike. Currently it has a photon which has done almost 6000 miles and has had two major breakdowns. My omnium with a heavy cargo can weigh as much as 75 kg fully loaded. The photon has done well but it is underpowered for the kind of courier machine I ride. Therefore the shop will upgrade the motor to a cyc pro gen4 to solve the power problems. I will keep you posted.

    When I upgrade I'm probably going with TQ HPR50 since you can buy them as components now instead of spending 15k USD to get one on a bike - they're still about a kbuck so if I need another motor the Tongshen has been working fine for me and the torque sensor is really good on it so for about 270 just for the motor/display it's hard not to go with another TSDZ2B. I pulled it out the box, installed it, and it just worked. Nothing to write home about but there is also something to be said for zero issues (so far).

    I think the new bafang torque sensor motors will finally bridge the gap against the cyc photon, tongsheng tsdz2 and the new dm motors. I have a tsdz2 and a bbs02b. The tsdz2 is a good motor but they're too flimsy.
    The whole thing is secured with crappy circlips. The bbs02b is just rock solid. A couple of weeks back we had floods in the uk, I had no choice but to ride with the motor submerged in water for a good 10 minutes, I had no choice as every possible route home was flooded. When I arrived home I took the motor apart and was surprised at the small amount of water that had penterated. I love these motors theirs no comparison in terms of reliability atm.

    The Ristretto 512 will be the first mass retail ebike to use the gen 4. Will keep you posted on how things are going once I get it, expected in March. I don't think there is going to be any meaningful amount of reduced noise from gen 4, only some arbitrary % they may assign to it hence they don't use it as a selling point.

      @HighVoltageKits  7 місяців тому

      The Ristretto is interesting. A guy on the channel got one of the previous ones. They put a special version of the controller on it restricting the power, so it likely to be 3500 watts maximum. My national agency, which sells fourth-generation motors, says the noise has decreased a lot compared to the third generation, but the manufacturer says there is not much difference in comments somewhere on the UA-cam video. If it had actually decreased, the manufacturer would have made a comparative video, but I'm more confident to see that it's not.

    • @HighVoltageKits
      @HighVoltageKits  5 місяців тому

      Not shocked at all. The fact they won't make this video along with the motor being the same construction and parts with a few minor tweaks suggests it will be just as loud. Its more the pitch that people find annoying. They know it hurts sales so making claims its now quieter is a good thing for them.

    In the end I do not trust CYC anymore. I run a X1 Pro Gen 2 here (with the option to upgrade to a Gen3 controller). When I met Cathy at Eurobike 2022 she promised that the software issues with the Android app for the Gen 2 will be fixed sometimes till the end of 2022. Then the new Gen 3 controller with new display and new app came out and surprise: No updates for the Gen 2 Android app anymore which programs the ASI 855. From what I have heared the Photon has similar software issues with the app. It´s not that the CYC X1 is a bad motor if you run it in decent power levels (e.g. 1-1.2 kW average with some peaks up to 1.4 kW) in PAS / torque mode but in high power throttle mode you will quickly waste either the X1 and / or your drive train. I have a Fat bike with stock BBS HD plus Eggrider. Also I build various BBS 02 fully MTBs with EggRider as well. I guess if the X1 dies on my fully I will either got the BBS 02 or BBS HD route. No money for CYC anymore. Especially getting spare parts in Germany is a true PITA and can get pretty expensive.

      I’m not so much concerned about their variety of frames but the length of running and conditions they test in. So like run it full bore up hills for 10km etc over and over and over. Because in the previous generations that’s what has resulted in failures. Hopefully this 4th generation will have greater reliability at the levels of power they are saying it can handle. It’s not a big motor and they are rating it above some really big and chunky QS motors.

      No. I just think that people deserve to see what the motor and sprockets look and sound like after way way more than 350km. It's not enough IMO. Their video is not enough. After four generations of this I have a right to expect more. This is just common sense and is nothing personal about you or your riding. It's not like they are paying you. You do the best you can. But how do you know whether after 2000kms it will not have an issue. The only way this makes sense is if they are saying that the motor is 3kw so you tested it at extremes beyond any normal person would. So look at the overhead. I am looking this from a very cold what's gone before perspective. This is not some scheme to push something else. Not Mike's stuff or our stuff. Nothing. I will be doing a comparison with the Photon and the DM02 but it won't mince words. There are lots of areas where the Photon wipes the floor with it.
