I've never been more called out in my life, I had the idea 8 years ago to start a channel brining the audience along on the journey to becoming a working internationally touring musician. explaining each step of the process. opening the closed door meetings. breaking down the contracts, demystifying the music industry that confuses and gatekeeps EVERYONE.

I spent years niching down (genealogy niche) at first to gain the core audience and get a feel for the niche. Then once I felt I hit that cap, I started to niche up by gearing that content towards a broader audience. So I started with genealogy tutorials and lots of videos on specific genealogy subjects which would only interest the core genealogy audience, but once I built up that core I began to gear my videos towards more narrative stories that used genealogy to find the story. Even more, I started doing collabs with non genealogy youtubers (although similar education channels) to make videos about their ancestry which then opened up their audience to finding me. So I still get a lot of the core genealogy audience but the narrative style has allowed me to start sizing up and reach a much wider audience than before. It has also allowed me to create something a bit more unique within the genealogy niche.

I'm someone that is vegan, loves to run using Heart Rate (Running in zone2 and Maf Method), I'm also in the progress of losing 80 lbs by running and cutting out the junk food and sugar. My goal over the next few years is to train to run a 100 mile race. Oh , and I have a food addiction just to make it a bit harder to achieve my running goals..lol. So, I guess I have a Journey Channel. Yes, it's growing slowly , however I have a great audience that's come along for my journey. Thanks for your videos Nate. Keep doing what you do, they really do help. Happy New Year!

Thanks Nate, I saw a video recently that said 'you are your niche' and for me I think that works as I'm a new UA-camr covering photography from my specialisms over 23 years: photo books, documentary photography, being weird. The problem is that niche is, well... niche! ha! I guess I could appeal to more people covering basic photography stuff but there's so much of that already on UA-cam. For me, my success is that maybe I reach out to a smaller more focused group who dig what I do and that I help them on their photo adventures! Again, thanks Nate. Its like having a friend whose into youtube!

I have been criticized by Tubers in the past for not wishing down! I refuse to do so! I am an outdoorsman at hart and the outdoors with all that involves it IS my niche. Canoeing, camping, exploring, fishing, back country cooking, the list goes on. I love what I'm doing and my growth is slow. Slower than I like it to be but I am pushing on.

I’m right with you!!! Niching down physically pains me! I have a podcast about my experiences with mental health and the things that keep me going and make me happy - it all falls under mental health! Creating and selling art, playing video games, going to concerts, hiking and being in nature…it all falls under how I manage my mental health. I know I’ll grow much slower but I have to be true to me.

After 2 years of working on an episodic format for my gaming channel, I'm slowly starting to see the results of my work and people are starting to recognize me. I'm doing something then I always wanted to do on UA-cam and that was create my own niche so that I don't have to worry about being locked down into one area. It's definitely not easy, but as long as I keep putting in the practice and work I know it's going to work out in the long run.

Reviewed this a while back and I want to say that this basic concept has really been top of mind ever since. I watch a lot more UA-cam now that I am a UA-camr and I look at everything now thinking about who the target audience is and how a successful channel has risen to the top. For storytelling channels, it’s not always production value, which is something we have identified as important for our channel. So far we’re not tempted to loosen our standards.

Another great topic that resonates with me. I finally got my channel to grow by hitting on a very specific niche almost by accident. I started consistently making videos on a specific robot. The channel was growing, but very slowly. I was told there just aren't that many people interested in that specific robot. So I tried to expand by making my channel more general "maker", but all other videos flopped. However, when I started making a consistent video series on a retro computer, again they did well and the channel started to grow again. But growth is too slow and again I'm told that there is a very small audience for that specific computer. So if I niche down, i get growth but it's very slow. If I niche up the growth slows even more, and I think I'm confusing/annoying my current audience.

I started off watching this thinking, I can’t “pick” a niche because I’m already doing videos about what I enjoy! So, why would a I pick anything different? By the end of the video I’m feeling like I’ve got it right (for now at least). In a broad sense my channel is about art and crafts but watching this made me think that actually it’s more about my journey with various arty things. Sometimes I’m just sharing what I’ve done and sometimes showing in detail how to do it. My channel is growing at a slow and steady pace, but I’m getting some amazing comments and that makes me so happy!

Thank you so much for mentioning artists! I try to look for specific tips for growing / starting art channels, but its been surprisingly hard to find any.
I think what you’re saying is very true! I’ve noticed that the artistic videos I love the most are the ones that take you through the journey of creating something. It’s interesting to hear from the artist at every stage of the process. It really does help you connect to them. But I haven’t really found too many channels that do this.
I’ve been trying to think of ways to take people through the process of creating artwork in an engaging way, but with an element of story-telling. As if every artwork was a story. But I think i’ll just have to experiment to see what works.
Thanks for the work you do, Nate! It’s so incredibly helpful.

Your video was spot on. I chose to niche down when I started the channel because I thought I could do a better job than what was out there. That said, because I decided to niche down, I'll get wild swings of viewership. My channel is focused on cryptocurrencies and so when the topic is hot I'll get a lot of views and comments/questions. However, when the topic is boring pretty much it's like pulling teeth to get views. The channel's pretty much feast or famine.

I have watched this video twice and thanks to you, Nate that it has responded to my niching down concern and just encouraged me to instead identify my target audience. The problem with this, I don't know my target audience yet. At least for now. I mostly share my life experiences plus tips and I need an audience that can relate and also see the world through my eyes. How do I find such an audience because I honestly do not want to niche up nor niche down. I want to stay in between.

There's something to be said for striking a balance on the niche up/down slider. Once you've establised a niche audience, they'll naturally expect you to make more videos in that specific area. But assuming you'll want to try new things and reach new people over time, it's a good idea to consider how to include your existing audience on that journey.

But I realize no matter how good the video would be, the audience have no idea what this Genre is and I then could imagine even they clicked in to watch, they wouldn't know "what to expect". My niche (Game Development) and the way I'm handling my channel fits in all you suggest here, which makes me way more confident in what I'm doing.
As for niching up, my strategy is this:
For the moment I make videos about an specific Game Engine, and I hit a subject which is kinda the automation you mentioned, and I'm already doing it better than others in the space. It has brought me huge success already. Fortunately Game Dev is a broad topic, so I can easily expand the channel as I go on, and put my hands on different topics too, like 3d Modeling, sound design, etc.
I did make one of these videos and it did terribly. Because the space already has a lot of massive players. But when I become a known UA-camr, then I already have an audience for anything else I make, and that will make those other videos stand out too.
This strategy is based on what you shared with us in ChannelMakers and in your new Channel.

Fantastic! The final minute really made me sit up and say YES! I know I like what I do on UA-cam, but I know it's not quite right and there is another way I want to do it! (Which BTW I think I've already identified.) You're right, I need to get on and do it, a lot sooner! Thank you as always, and here ends my mothers day (UK) binge watch of Nate Black videos:)

I've been developing my content since 2020 and I'm launching my channel in 2024. I can confidently say that I check all five of the niche boxes and sit comfortably in the middle. This is my hour! (This isn't the account it's launching on)

I used to niche down and didn't grow at all.... even worse, the channel nearly died... despite the niche being popular and the content being rather unique. The algorithm just didn't get it, presented the content to the wrong audience who didn't click, end of story.
Now I niche up with some videos AND niche down with others... works quite well! As a small channel, it's all about the algorithm, not (just) the audience... Since I started focusing more on the algorithm (blaming the algorithm) I started growing. Fast....

I think that a lot of niches are about an audience that were not there before. People want to learn new things so when you have a channel that is e.g. about learning how to start up a successful YT channel than those people might not even have a YT channel. They might even just see your banner and title saying "How to build a successful YT channel" and after that they become curious.

Nice one Nate 🙂 I would have been in serious trouble throwing all those papers... Hope you survived after the video. Really good video and deep dive in different niches and ideas for all of us. Take Care everyone and have a lovely 2024 🙂

I am definitely trying to broaden my appeal. Had a really great original idea, no one has ever done on UA-cam and it flopped. So growing pains I guess.

That business niche suggestion is the way to go. One needs to earn the trust of prospective clients before they can comfortably convert into paying clients. Showcase your expertise and know how about the products and services you offer.
Offer tutorials and business advise too beginners too.

I niched down into oblivion and never grew FOR 3 YEARS. As soon as I started niching up I started blowing up- I've had more growth than I ever have and was able to join the YPP this year.

I think another thing to consider when choosing your niche is how you can serve others(the viewers).

    To answer your question:
I am in a niche I want to do. However my limits are:
Lack of energy (Thank Long-COVID for that 😢😤)
Lack of funds (I want to do it full time, and with lots better equipment, but with a low-income job and bills to be paid it's.... hard)
I'm in the middle of that circle that you drew, so that's a good thing.
Now, if only I could get my energy back from pre-Long-COVID and have lots more funds, I could bring my channel (and my business!) to where I want it to be 😀
I wish everyone a wonderful and creative 2024! May all your dreams come true and may your channel grow the way you want it to grow!
Thank you, Nate, for a very interesting video! I always learn from your videos 😀

I just had an idea while driving to work last year. Didn't know if it's a niche or not, but felt compelled to build my video making skills from scratch and try to make a channel. Recently, I'm actually starting to see some traction and want to keep sharing my ideas more and more now (while improving skills as much as possible😉)

I've been learning that a huge part of making successful videos is having fun and being yourself. I think now people want more raw and authentic content and UA-cam is the only place for that kind of long form content.
