It's funny about the mic placement, it looks on the video that its pointed right at the wood but it is actually away from the amp a few inches and is actually pointed at the sweet spot of the speaker, just an optical illusion. Thanks for watching
Beautiful playing, Tim! The amp sounds great, but so much of the sound of a guitar and of an amp is the hands & touch of the player. In your hands... sublime!
i have one of these and i love it for slide and rockabilly or country stuff. sounds great for dirty rhythm stuff too. i like using a Y cable into the acc and mic inputs and use the bright switch. i use humbuckers and usually a blacktop strat which sounds pretty warm so maybe it wont sound as good with the tele. you get a better mid range with the acc, and not as much treble and bass as the normal input from the mic input. the great as a pre amp really makes this thing sing but has some hum.
Tim I just want to say, I watch a lot of these kind of guitar demos/videos etc. and this is a rare good one! Awesome playing, good tone, nice info... All around one of the best videos I watched on youtube for a long time :)... Keep it up man
I was comparing the new Bad Cat Cougar 5 watt'er and the Fender Excelsior. You have the finest and purest tone of all and that's helped me decide to go with my original choice, the Excelsior. It also reminded me of my old Flot-A-Tone ....thanks for sharing
Michael, there are some chapters on the DVD that will approach the topic of chords and double stops etc, if you really want some chord oriented stuff look for my Ted Greene lessons here on youtube. enjoy
Great demo Tim! Low powered amps are awesome for getting a myriad of tones just from riding your guitar volume/tone controls and adjusting pick attack. +1 on the JJ 6V6's too. Thanks mate!
A fantastic player on a fantastic combo! You really do that amp justice, Tim! I love mine - picked one up out of necessity for a tour gig I scored in '12 or '13. I recently had the opportunity to run a stereo rig using a borrowed second, backlined Excelsior about a week ago, and now I want another. Great video!
You have a soulful style of pickin', my friend. So nice to get past all those other videos with cat's rattling the world with cheap blues riffs and would-be metal shredding.
Thank you. That is an interesting website. I enjoyed your video segments and ordered your DVD straight away. And I was only looking for amp demos today ....
i waited for the local store to get them. when i saw them advertised, i went to get one. they were not yet in stock, you could only order them. while at the store i saw a used fender deluxe vm amp in the blonde finish. it was too pretty to leave at the store, so i grabbed that instead.
great demo! please PLEASE post that video of using this with some open tuning slide work. that's what i'm really looking to hear. i'm looking into the excelsior for that, but there's not much of that specifically on youtube. i've been salivating over this amp for a couple months and you just made it so much worse! thanks!
Wow, Tim. How did I miss this one? Some really great jazz-blues picking in here (no surprise from you). But woah! That amp sounds GREAT! I play 50s style tweeds (a 5F1 Champ with a 12" speaker and a 5F11 clone) which are very different beasts but I really like this and the price is right on. I'll have to grab one eventually. Thank you again for sharing your talent and knowledge with us so graciously. God bless you.
Id never heard of these amps until I saw one on Facebook marketplace today. Of course I came straight to UA-cam for some samples and voila, one of my favorite players with an Excelsior. With that little touch of reverb it has everything I want and need. Something about a 15" speaker. Anyway, excellent playing, as always, and a really cool sounding amp. I may have to grab one. Thank you sir.
The problem with your demos Tim is that you make everything sound good ;-). I gotta say that I like your clean tone better through the Blues Jr in many of the other videos and the OD sounds of the Ethos/Blues Jr. combo seemed to be more tube like (at least on the video recreation). I can understand the "real" grit you might be going for with a slide guitar could be better live at volumne with this amp.
Just bought this amp yesterday...I love it! I got a road worn 50's tele and it just seems like a match made in heaven. haha What kind of strings do you use, Tim?
Best demo i've seen on the excelsior so far... What an amazing tone! And that telecaster... I've got the same amp but play through a gibson les paul 60's tribute gold top.
I purchased one of this cool amp. since I only play this amp live. If we play a bit louder as usual, there`s a very nice feedback coming from behind (with my harley benton big tone guitar). Very fat sound, very good response to my playing, very, very easy settings. I`m happy as I can be with this amp.
Hi David, it probably really depends on the guitar/pickups you use since the tone sculpting on this amp is so limited. If you get a chance to try one, let me know how it works out for you.
that's a lovely vintage sound, I was looking at this amp for my backline, but not having played through it, and needing a clean vintage sound for my ricky double neck 12 string, I wondered if it might be asking too much of it in a gig situation...especially since it's a 13w model...I would really appreciate your opinion.....
Tim, I find your instructional videos really useful. I'm an intermediate player (playing for about 20 years now) with a working knowledge of theory and I'm looking to develop my chord work in my blues playing, like you did in this video. Is that kind of stuff covered in your DVD or do you have another video on YT which covers it?
Done correctly, a remote power section can help reduce the noise floor. Of course, done correctly, an amp with consolidated preamp/power sections can be pretty quiet. Also, the demo would be more accurate with another guitarist. You could make a Fender Frontman sound like its worth buying.
Hi Tim, would love to hear you demo the excelsior with your Airline Tuxedo. If you don't have time for that I'd be interested to know what you make of the combination!
hello friend i'm from brazil and i don't understand your language much, which brand of these pickups? can you write to me here? I found the sound of your telecaster incredible!
@@TimLerchGuitar Mini humbuckers? TodayI'll be buying a fender excelsior, you've been watching the news and I ended up subscribing to your channel. His teachings are very good to improve my style! Thank you very much
Hi Tim, I guess ANY amp will sound at least decent with your playing... with this one I get the impression that it's a bit too brilliant and rather not that warm. Which is surprising, given the 15" speaker that you mention and which should be quite noticeable in terms of bottom end. Just recently I played a Tele with a Peavey Delta Blues (1x15") and it was really different (=better) than with a Peavey Classic 30 (1x12") - although the actual amp-circuitry should be pretty much the same.
Mr T. Lerch is a really superb reviewer , got to be among the best of many great guitar related demos on here . A seriously , seriously talented musician . Think he would be great is a Steely Dan line up, or again with Vince Gill and Al Anderson and that`s heavy company , a whole bunch of people could benefit from this blokes chops, he is that good methinks.

I bought a used one. I love it. I wish I could play like you do. Working on it. Many miles to go...

The neck pickup is a Lollar Charlie Christian

The authetic vintagey trem os icing on the cake with this amp. -PK
I love this tone! great mic placement.. wouldnt do it myself, but I think I'll try it out when I purchase this amp..
great demo
Nice playing, such a great little amp. I love mine, run it stereo with a Blues JR Nos.

I really loved your variety of style playing. Yes, it did take me back to the fifties. Great work my friend. Great video demo.
Hello Timothy, I enjoy the way you teach, thanks for what you do. Just ordered the Blues Guitar Road Trip DVD off Amazon. Looking forward to it.

its inspired by Okie Dokie Stomp by Gatemouth Brown. but it only just references it .

This demo made my mind up! Yes, please!
Great sound, great playing.
really enjoy your playing with this amp and various demos with lollar pickups in teles. Influenced me to purchase an excelsior.
wow great demo!
Cool Player, nice touch. Thanks!
Like the amp, love the playing!
AND ITS BEAUTIFUL TO WATCH THE BACK OF THIS AMP IS BREATHLESS
Just ordered the DVD, thanks Tim!
Nice tone box. Very Gibson like.
Curious on your opinion of Nash guitars.
excellent guitars!
Great demo , excellent playing...Thanks for posting it...
Thanks for the demo, Tim! I've been interested in this amp for a little while, now. I just might pick one up after all. :)
Nice review, thanks.
Dig the amp, love the way you play
Just bought this amp yesterday...I love it! I got a road worn 50's tele and it just seems like a match made in heaven. haha What kind of strings do you use, Tim?
New, affordable and doesn't sound too far away from a 50's Fender amp.
I would love to hear a ES-335 through it.
Sounds great.....but let's be honest.....Tim can make anything sound great.
Omg the E! Never saw it till now!
thank you Patrick.
holy crap...great playing!
Just bought this amp. Want to put some Lollar 52t's in my tele bases on your and other demos. Thanks
Play through this with a les Paul pickup configuration on 10. Neck pickup on 3, bridge on 10, and switch. The power of this amp is unbelievable!

some damn good playing mate
Good tone, even on my I phone. Yeayyyyy I'm getting one.
hi tim,
killer tone, especially during the first 20 seconds...
do you still remember the amp settings?
Very helpful. Thanks.
Nice demo Tim. Dig your playing. Wonder if you have tried to gig with this amp?

finally its mine what an amazing amp cant buy better trust me guys BUY IT..............
Oh gee....not subjective at all, and you probably don't have it anymore...better than Achilles Princeton or Fender Princetons?? Yeah right...
@@TheStrataminor different vibe, killer in it's own right. Chinese built hence the price. A friend has one.

The Dude abides.
Thanks, have this amp and was looking for a good sounding reverb pedal with this.
Cool Demo Tim... I'm curios to try this amp!
Do you think it could be work for fingerstyle also?
It has just a volume, I dont' know...
Have to echo what everyone else has said, great touch man, you're a sick player :D
wish i could play it at 4:00 0n the dial. I feel this suits single coil better than buckers.
Hi Tim, would love to hear you demo the excelsior with your Airline Tuxedo. If you don't have time for that I'd be interested to know what you make of the combination!

This pickup combination it the Lollar CC in tHe neck and the Lollar 52 in the bridge.

Great guitar playing as usual. Just curious as to who influences your Jazzy-Blues playing?

sweet grooves for sure ! sept 2016
Is there a trailer for your Blues Guitar Road Trip DVD?
Would you recommend this amp for a beginner in blues? I don't have much money
How is the bass response on that amp ? Great playing !
I’m curious if you hung on to this amp? Sounds good but seems to be a one trick pony.
Thanks for all the great demos
