As a Belgian, I also want to recommend "vol au vent" aka "koninginnehapje", which is available in every restaurant (in most restaurants, you find it next to the "stoofvlees" stew you mentioned). Chicken, meatballs and mushrooms in a white gravy with a puff pastry biscuit, preferably served with Belgian fries.
Agree with your choices! Another excellent Belgian dish is waterzooi, a creamy stew with vegetables and either chicken or fish. Especially welcome if you are there in cooler months. Yummy.
little secret when it comes to the belgian beef stew, to get the sauce to bind, we usually take one piece of bread, spread some mustard on it and put it in the stew to thicken the sauce.
OMG, I just booked a 2 week trip to Europe in December to explore Christmas markets in Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. We start out in Brussels/Bruges so this video is perfect!
In Brussels, you should take your frites on the other side of the bourse building in patatak, beter than the other side. And they have homemade fikadel and saus ( like mango basilic or apple curry)
You missed quite a few dishes, one of my favorite Belgian dishes is vol au vent, so delicious and easy to make at home yourself, I make it all the time
Very nice highlight of what I've always been told about food and drink in Belgium. As you said i"tems and place are popular because they are good," and there's a line out the door for a reason.
I’m with you. The Liege waffles plain are the best. We did a Noweigian Fjords cruise then 5 days in Belgium. We went because my father in law helped liberate Belgium in WWII. I wish we had more time. We stayed in Brussels and took the train to Bruges and Ghent. I dragged my friend, who is a big Bruce Springsteen fan, with us. Not only was she amazed with Belgium, but we sat down at a cafe’ in Grand Place and three members of the E Street Band were at the next table. Bonus!
Nik & Allie, My lady and I are retired from our careers, and are now amateur epicurean travelers, and would like to check out those restaurants recommendations. I follow your adventures, and will buy the merino wool. Frankly, I'd heard of marino wool, but wasn't aware of its travel advantages. Thanks, and, yes, i will buy through your channel. 👍👍
Was just in Belgium this January and had everything on your list (including over 25 different Belgian beers) except for the Bitterballen. For whatever reason I did not come across these. But did you not try Waterzooi?
The city of Liège, Lüttich in German or Luik in Flemish, is in my opinion THE waffle 🧇 city par excellence! According to what I've been able to gather, the French speaking Belgians invented what Anglosaxons now call "French fries", albeit potatoes come originally from the Highlands of Peru and Bolivia! A classic fast food dish in Belgium is "moules frites", that's in white wine and herbs slightly boiled mussels with delicious fries. Cheers from Rioja in Spain 🙋🏽🍾🥂!
4:20 That is NOT the way mussels are served ! As you said it they are served in a big pot. "Natuur" with herbs and vegetables only, or with white wine and a few other choices. Beer is less common.
Not anymore Ghent is a paradise for veggie lovers. Since, proportionally, our city has more vegan and vegetarian restaurants than say Paris or London, we can call ourselves the veggie capital of Europe.
You did a decent job but for the audience that wants a bit more authentic besides the stereotypes: Go to Ghent or Antwerp. The Antwerp train station is something else and in its present state a huge combination of modern engineering (The 5 floors of train tracks ) and historical elements dating back to the beginnings of Belgium. They call it the Train Cathedral for a reason! There is the old zoo just next to the station and you can explore the Keizerslei and Meir walking up to the river Scheldt. Try to find the old narrow Vlaeykensgang at the Suikerrui or see the old Voetgangerstunnel crossing the Scheldt on foot or bike. 30ties engineering escalators.. worth the walk to see it! About food: Try something different! Stewed rabbit in brown beer or eel in a herby green sauce! Or Belgian white endives rolled in ham and covered in a cheesy sauce in the oven. For dessert I always recommend an icecream coupe Dame Blanche. In Belgium this will be made with real melted Belgian chocolate. (If you do not eat it in an Italian or chinese or any foreign restaurant 😜
We loved Ghent so much. Based ourselves there for just under a week. On our way from Ghent to Leiden in the Netherlands had a short stop in Antwerp and you are so right. The train station was GORGEOUS and our daughter loved the zoo. Though small, we enjoyed it more than many zoos we've been to. Thanks for your feedback!
Japan is #1 on my wish list - but have yet to make it there (other than layover). So I can't advise well on the 'versus' question. However, Thailand holds a special place in my heart and know both are worth a visit!
I like your channel, but not all your subscribers are from “America”. I live in Costa Rica, hence in America, Central America, so listening to you guys saying America it’s very odd. I get you guys from “America” think your country is the world, but you Nik know that isn’t true. So, please start referring to the USA as the United States.

We must have just missed you in Bruges!!!

We had the Flemish stew (and a waffle) at that same restaurant in Brugge last month. It didn’t disappoint! We had Bitterballen in Amsterdam. Loved it!
Fries in Belgium are best in the world!
I found your channel looking for tips to prepair for a vacation in the US next year, but now you are reviewing my home country. 😂

try and make your own mayonnaise,it's really easy
Please add the time of year you travel in the video description.
👍Flanders NATION!
I appreciate that you included more than just the usual 4 (waffles, beer, chocolate and frites). It looks scarce for vegetarians in Belgium. : /
Not anymore

Agree. Ghent was our favorite. Would easily go there again!
Nick, ever been to Tokyo or Bangkok? Where would you go first? JP Porto

@@awaytogether maybe we will split time between portugal and bangkok
@@awaytogether thanks Nick!
I’ll definitely recommend Japan first. Bangkok is for temples and nightlife, not much else to do. But Japan you can find endless fun things to do
Stop it, don't tell everyone all my hidden gems 😜
There is plenty for everyone, too much even.
As an American, your diet is mainly junk food, so travelling must be like discovering a new world.
Don't assume you know how I eat at home. I'm pretty much a grilled chicken and rice guy. haha But you're not wrong - it's easy to eat like crap here.
Holafly worked fantastic food is in Spain, Andorra, France, Croatia & Amsterdam. Thanks for the recommendation!!
Your daughter is very cute 😊.

Please don' t call to South/ Central América, Latin América but Ameríndia! Latins are WHITE people from Southern Europe! !!
Try Lyon, France for food
Lyon is seriously amazing!!
What's so amazing about Belgium??
Hmmm I can think of at least 9 things. 😅

Imagine how amazed you would be if you knew the world 😉
Wow I can't wait to be as wise and well traveled as you! 🙌🏻
@@awaytogether
You bet😉
Stupid question
Go to France
Food in France is 🤤🤤🤤
Average and most usually overpriced....
A typical French restaurant :

Food was very good, the beer outstanding and Ghent alone is worth the visit. Lyon and Bologna are the best for food that I've visited
Ghent is wildly underrated. Very glad we based ourselves there rather than Bruges. And can't agree more about Lyon or Bologna. Both incredible
