  • Whether you put your camera in auto or painstakingly set the white balance from a reference card, getting the white balance right is one of the fundamental aspects of making a good quality image. In this video, the first in a series, we’ll start looking at the white balancing capabilities and options found in Canon’s EOS R5 and it’s siblings (such as the #R3, #R6, #R6-2, #R8, #R7, #R50, & #EOSR).
Additionally, I’ll look into the auto white balance options and how it performs on the R5, to see how it handles situations inside and outside it’s designed range.

I am really appreciative of your deep dive into white balance!! Excellent!

Oh man another great one, Jason. Super helpful comparisons between modes. Can I suggest putting your B camera just a *little* closer to your A cam? It would make for a slightly less jarring shift (keeping it like 10 degrees rotation or less between the two). Love these deep dives on the R5, though. Keep it up!

Thanks. And yea, the b-camera angle is definitely an ongoing process.

I'm interested in your setup that you have going on here! That might be a cool little video to throw in the mix. You seem to do everything top notch.

Some info on the R5: is it possible to enable the highlight warning function during the exposure? Because the function is there but if enabled it shows the warning only once the shot has been taken.

Unfortunately, no. The best you can do for a clipping warning is either take a test shot and look at the review, or turn on the histogram and watch for it to show clipping.

@@PointsInFocus Yes! I use the histogram mainly for all my exposures, but a real-time alert wouldn't be bad to have, other brands have this feature! Thanks for the reply

I would suggest letting Canon know you'd like to have the feature. If you're in the US, Canon USA has a feedback form on the top of their site. The problem, in my experience is that lots of people will get angry and complain about missing features and what not in the comments of videos, but won't actually send Canon any feedback directly.
I mean when push comes to shove, there's no technical reason they can't do this. In some ways, they already do with zebras in video mode.

@@PointsInFocus You are right! I am in Italy and I will inform Canon Italia as soon as possible of the possibility of increasing this functionality via firmware, because in my experience I find it very useful, but above all it speeds up and improves the method of shooting in the field!
