Well, to be honest, growing up in that era, remembering seeing Master of Puppets coming out, seeing a record at a friend's house that I now know it was Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, also the cover of King Crimson's Epitaph, we could not know then what kind of diamonds we had on our hands. Of course now it's so easy to tell, cause you're not trying to compare real diamonds with fake ones, rather than diamonds with shit.

Yes... this song if essentially a suicide note set to music. However, this song helped me a great deal when I was younger. Despite the pain and confusion I felt, I let me know I was not alone and someone understood. It expressed for me thoughts and feelings that I myself could not put into words. It did not make me want to kill myself. It, in fact, made me feel better.

I couldn't agree more Brother! I experienced pretty damn horrible physical and sexual abuse by my classmates back when I was a kid, and 'cause of that, became awkward, anti-social and depressed as a teen. Honestly, I really considered killing myself at times, but then, I discovered Metallica and in particular, Fade To Black. For some weird reason, it uplifted me and always made me wanna live a little more. This song is an absolute gem!

There are two types of people who listen to Fade to Black.
One hears a beautiful but dark and depressing song.
The other has *been there*. This song is not depressing for them.
The first third connects and resonates with the pain in their soul, The middle drags that pain out, and the instrumental/solo at the end uplifts and heals.
This song saved my life as a teenager when I was considering suicide. The sheer feeling of hopelessness in the song reflected my own level of despair and that actually gave me hope. Knowing that I wasn't alone and that others have felt the same feelings and survived and gone on to bigger things.
This is their best song. There's not a single part I would change.

A song that was written expressing the feeling when they got their gear stolen.
"I was me but now he's gone" is a great line. Metallica took some flack for "glorifying" suicide here, but were able to defend themselves by sharing letters from folks that wrote "I feel better knowing I'm not alone with these thoughts".
This song was a release for me in my darkest days. Music like this got me thinking I wasn't alone and there were others who went through something similar to the pain I felt.

There was some pretty serious backlash thrown at the band over this song. Parents tried to blame Metallica for the suicides of their children. They couldn't wrap their heads around the notion that this song was, in the vast majority of cases, catharsis for people who were in that dark place. The song isn't a call for suicide, it's a description of the allure of death.
@@chrisd7047 I know. You have to break stigmas around mental problems. The silence and shame connected with mental illness only makes it worse. I've been active in the union for mental health here in Sweden.

A modern band that puts as much feels in their music is avenged sevenfold... They are huge Metallica fans as well.
I’ve said this many times, but the great thing about the message in this song is that it makes you realise that you’re not the only one that has these dark feelings.
A depressed listener would likely take comfort in the fact that they’re not the only person in that position, and ultimately nobody in Metallica killed themselves, they moved on and have lived great lives.
In my opinion this song gives hope and comfort to a lot of people, and we haven’t even gotten into how brilliant it is musically.

@@seelenwinter6662 This is the second album and all albums up to Black album are great (live with it, it might not be thrash but it's damn good)
And yes they where young when they wrote it, alot of alcohol and drugs involved, they where depressed at the time because a lot of stuff got stolen and for James i think a amplifier that his mom gave him (not sure but she died young) so there was alot of thought about killing themself because they had to start all over again.

Dude, this song actually saved me. I was so suicidal for so long and I couldn't communicate it to anyone and I had no reference (there was not that much internet at the time ;P) and this song, it gave me something to hold on. The feeling that I wasn't alone with this. People go through the same thing and actually express it. And every single word of this song hit a 100% home. But, and that's the kicker I guess, it stopped me from suicide. I listen to it and I don't go 'oh yeah, I do the same as him (in the song)', I sit there and can't do it anymore because someone knows. There is someone out there who truly understands. And that brought me back every single time. And I'm not exaggerating or anything, this song literally saved my life!
And now I'm sitting here crying, lol. It's really cutting deep. Oh well, thanks for your reaction and trying to understand what's happening there, really appreciate it 💜

I used to be new to metal, listened to SOAD then Metallica and some bands now I'm turning into metalhead, but this song man this song,, this solo is like someone who's praying or looking for help. I once drove my car and played this, tears up when I listened to the solo. IT'S THRILLING AND SAD AT THE SAME TIME!

Can you please react to Metallica “The Unforgiven”?
Yeah momentum can be strained but you could also argue that focus is lost if you comment while the track continues. You lose your footing in the song and moments fly right over your head. Also - pausing prevents copyright issues. So just pause when you got more than a few words to say or need to articulate something. Then dial the track back 10 seconds so you can hop back on that momentum right where you left off.
I agree with you. Pausing kills the momentum and most reactors pause it at the wrong time. I don't pause my videos. I don't care about blocking copyright. The money should go to the artist anyway.
I thought they had to pause the song if they did t want it to get blocked.. at least the more prominent reactors. He may be flying under the radar and can play without pause.
I don't like that either, it takes you out of the moment.

This song is an absolute masterpiece, and arguably one of the top 5 metal songs of all time. I still feel the same emotions and pain when I hear the song as I did when I first heard it over 30 years ago.

1984,Metallica were still an underground band but huge with people that liked real metal not pop metal crap like Poison,Motley Crue or Twisted Sister, I did like some Motley Crue and Twisted Sister though but when I discovered Metallica it was all over never heard anything that heavy and good before or since, 80s Metallica is the greatest heavy metal ever created.
It was pure thrash, after black album though it became heavy, im a diehard metallica fan aaah 😂

Forbidden Yasuo I feel you. However whilst I agree their earlier work is their best. You can’t fault a band expressing their change and musicianship for playing what they want over time. Yes Load and ReLoad are quite different in sound to the first 5 albums, but the songs on Load and ReLoad albums were still A one A musically just more bluesy. When they released the Death Magnetic album getting more back to their thrash roots. It was an amazing album. They are true artists and have to give them credit for not having one single album that sounds the same. That’s why they are who they are and not Slayer. They are the finest musicians that have ever blessed metal and more so seen by the SF symphony orchestra concerts they did 20 years ago.

Fade to Black is an amazing song and when depressed it helps lift me somehow. I think I first heard it in about 1985 when I was 11!

No, see, people who have depression on this level often can't connect it with the outside world... it doesn't have a voice. The mind has no concept of how to get it into words, to purge it.
This song is a voice. It's a conduit, and wait to see how many commenter tell you this song *saved their lives* because it opens the valve that drains all that mental pressure for someone who's bottled up and ready to explode in the most dire, self-damaging ways.
EDIT: VERY IMPORTANT: James was never a drug user, his demon is alcohol.... of the 'vodka with breakfast' variety.

Even though this song is about suicide, it saved a lot of lives including mine. Because it allowed me to almost experience suicide without actually doing it. Also the music is almost the opposite of the lyrics, it is very upbeat and helped me get it out of my system. But that's just me.

This particular song "carried me thru" some very troubled, and very dark times in my life.
Personally, I believe it to be the best song that's ever been written. Thank you, Metallica.. for letting so many of us know, we weren't alone. And thanks to TNT for recognising a masterpiece.
Discovered Ride the Lightning at 14. It changed the way I thought about, listened to and consumed music. It remains a masterpiece of the genre and Fade to Black still moves me in my late thirties.
The Band had all their Equipment stolen including James's favorite Marshall amp head. They were not rich at the time and instruments are super expensive. James wrote the song basically because he was so depressed from loosing their livelihood at the time. It has definitely helped me through some tough times. Metallica has their faults but I will always be indebted to them for getting my through the worst parts of my life. I always use those first five albums for therapy when things go south.

It's like a Metal lullaby... You have no idea just how accurate that statement was.
If you’re really suicidal, listening to a well-written suicidally-themed song will rescue you. It will help you rescue you. Many times when you’re depressed enough to want to self-destruct, it’s due to feeling extremely lonely, when you feel there’s no one to identify or link yourself with. But when you hear someone else’s song that illustrates so well what you’re feeling but can’t seem to express to others...suddenly the singer is someone you can identify with and now you’re a bit less lonely. Plus this song is emphatic so you can sing along or move along to the music and blow off your depression steam.

As a teen listening to this feeling down and not getting why ( cause of the teen angst or whatnot) i felt down this song was something to relate to and was a way to let out some of the emotions i felt safely without violence or whatnot. This song was probably step 1 in realizing music was great for letting out overwhelming emotions . I feel i didn't explain myself well but this song helped me in a dark time as i can tell by reading other comments it helped many others as well. Now as i am older i have many songs that help but this one was the very first. Truly in my opinion a timeless masterpiece.

This was one of those songs where Kirk Hammet(Lead guitarist) randomly came up with a part(the acoustic intro) and it snowballed from there. It came about when a bunch of their equipment got stolen, this was during the time when they were basically dirt poor.

Suicidal Tendencies - How Will I Laugh Tomorrow If I Can't Even Smile Today?
I spent 6 months in a psychiatric hospital after a failed suicide attempt in the 90s and I listened to a lot of Suicidal Tendencies.

It has to be the album version though, not the official video, because the official video cuts about 3 minutes of important lyrics.

This song was written when they were in their late-teens to early twenties and they were on the road and had all of their equipment stolen. It’s crazy to think they were that young and writing/playing such masterpieces. I play guitar because of Metallica and I must admit, I was so focused on the guitar and heavy riffs that I glossed over the lyrics of many of their songs. I mean, I knew enough to know the chorus or pick out most words here and there and half-ass sing along, but when you actually read the words, reflect on them and understand them in their totality...it made me appreciate James and his writing ability that much more.
At the time this came out I totally identified. Still such a fan at 65.
Most people think music is made to be heard. It's not made to be heard, it's made to be felt.
There is a lot of old school hard rock and heavy metal that (especially in comparison to today's music) are, or should be, considered pieces of art.
I mean, I know this is the music I grew up on, so, one has to logically and objectively assume that I would have a biased perspective.....
But, as we are now seeing....30 and 40 plus years later.....how people in reaction videos much like your own are expressing similar thoughts, ideas and emotions when it comes to this music....
This music truly is one of a kind and should most definitely be considered art.....

i always felt that the ending instrumental was the representation of the final anxieties you might feel as you are taking your life, the build-up, the execution, then as you start to drift, your are finally escaping as you fade to black, the unconsciousness of death....
I see it just the way you do. But the feeling of desparation towards the end always makes me think: Fuck you, despair! NOT with me! So this song has a positive influence on my dark moods ...
That's the way most look at it but i don't...I think of the anxiety building but it fades, as everything does. I mean, we, and Metallica, are still alive by the end of the song, so i take it as a positive that the bad emotions fade. Just as the highs do...
As a teen I was very depressed and suicidal. this song and a few others actually gave me something to have of my own and allowed me to feel something.

This song represents hope to me. It gives you pause... a moment to reflect and a moment to realize that you're not alone and that there's more out there. There is an end and that end isn't the end, but a new beginning. This is a song of transition and realization.

This song spoke to me as a depressed teenager because I was having those exact feelings. Just hearing someone express that they have felt the same way and knowing they understood plus the fact they were older than me and kicking ass all over the world as a band gave me hope that I could come out the other side. I’m now in my forties and Metallica helped me get there. They made me feel like I wasn’t alone.
One of my top 5 favorites by them. When Kirk's solo comes in at the end...blissful! It reminds me of David Gilmore coming in with his sweet guitar in Comfortably Numb. Orgasmic 😁

I like this. Alot of white people love R&B and rap. Its good to see it go the other way. Culturally music can make people understand each other better. In these crazy days we all need to realize that while we have cultural differences, we are more alike than we might realize. That is something music can do.
This is one of my favorite songs. Not a fav metal song, no a fav Metallica song, no. This is one of my fav songs of all time.
About the suicide, like you said, the song fades away (to black, to nothing, to silence, "there is nothing more for me") and almost wouldn't need lyrics to transmit all those sad depressing feelings, thats true. But I think they didn't want this piece of music to have enough space to play around with vague words like "sad feeling, loneliness, depression, emotional, etc"... in fact the lyrics are so "in your face" that it's even hard to avoid speaking the words of what it's going on here. This is IMHO, one of the best songs describing the last 5 minutes of someone that already took the decision to commit suicide, there is no turning back.
For me this isn't about poetry, melody or "the beauty of death" in some romantic perspective. It's about the lost of everything that you could hang on to to go on living... there is nothing left. The chords, the melody, everything is meant to send you down while absorbing the "explanation" of what's happening (lyrics) and the chords just follow to the point of agony and fades to black. It's a small masterpiece of my favorite Metallica album "Ride The Lightening"

One of my favorite songs 1983-84 .
Many people have said this song has helped them out of a bad place. People disregard this song and other songs in this vain as depressing. But this can give the people who have the feelings of depression or suicidal thoughts, something to relate to knowing others have been through and are going through. Moreover fade to black was wrote in 1984 a time when mental health problems were heavily scorned upon.

These are the kinds of songs that makes Metallica so great and why they still draw massive crowds in concerts. The thing about them they are not afraid to try different things. Sometimes it fails in quality (St Anger Album) But Hardwired there last album was back more the style most fans love. It is a sad song but the music play is just so good.
